One of the most gloriously unhinged, and in my opinion, wildly entertaining performances of the year belongs to Jake Gyllenhaal‘s turn in “Okja.” Playing a wildly unhinged animal lover and television celebrity, Gyllenhaal’s Johnny Wilcox is like watching Steve Irwin after he’s consumed a couple of six-packs of Red Bull. Squeaky voiced and bug eyed, there is nothing small about the performance, and it has proven somewhat divisive. However, Gyllenhaal couldn’t be more pleased that audiences can’t make heads or tails of what he’s doing in Bong Joon-Ho‘s film.

And that was the point of the character. From the very beginning, Bong said to me, ‘We have to hate you and you have to be bad.’ That was the goal and, well, I’d say we reached it. And so some people really love that and some people just think it’s genuinely bad. That’s fine.”
“That’s the reason why I do my job, for reactions like that,” he added.
Well, if the goal was to get people talking about his work in “Okja,” mission accomplished. Whether you think it’s his best or worst turn, it’s certainly the most performance Gyllenhaal has done in his career.

Doing a little research for Narnia's next post and stumbled upon this little nuggito that I don't even remember seeing before. Back in the day before Just Jared did a Bissell sweep of all comments on old posts, one could take up their magnifying glass and search for gold in them there hills. ;-)
And indeed, back on August 25, 2013, there was this seemingly innocent post on the John From Cincinnati premiere held on May 31, 2007.
Some great vintage photos in what looks about like any other current Just Jared post (with the exception of the "Jake Gyllenhaal's BFF" mention) and....well, wait a minute. Where are the comments? Well, I think the New and Unimproved Just Jared entry is missing at least one. You don't say?
Oh, I say.

Hugo's is a healthy eating establishment located on Santa Monica Blvd in West Hollywood. Perhaps on those occasions Austin allowed Jake to choose where to chow down. LOL! Thank you, WeHoGuy. By the way, did you know that 40% of the male population in West Hollywood is gay? Just a little tidbit to go along with our original nuggito.
That Comment #26 is a real keeper. How surprising that there are no additional remarks/replies on this thread now. Just Jared eliminated the public comments on this and many of Jake and/or Austin's past write ups; most likely for other celebrities as well, I just haven't looked that extensively. But, I wouldn't be shocked if Jake's people were front and center in the complaint line.

And she said Stronger has been offering screenings for LA reporters this week, here's what she thought of Gyllenhaal's performance:

1. Gyllenhaal's shown strong performance, convincing and touching, as does the wife actress. Plot overall similar to Theory of Everting. Very hopeful Best Actor candidate.

3. Same distributor as Patriot's Day but Lionsgates managed to avoid anything overlapping between them, or anything related to the terrorists.
4. This might be more impactful than Garfield's Breathe due to its social relevance. Screening a month before its TIFF premiere shows confidence from the studio.

It's hard to say when the actual lowering of the curtain occurred for the Jake Gyllenhaal fansite, Wet, Dark and Wild. By at least early November of 2013, the administrator (who was active on Twitter) was openly trying to find someone to take over the blog. I say "openly" because literally, an offering for the website was extended to another Jake Gyllenhaal fan via a tweet conversation.

On January 2, 2015, administrator Kate published a goodbye to her readers. No longer visible online, the following is an excerpt from the post entitled, "Happy New Year and all best wishes as WDW closes its bar doors"

Well, look at that. "I wouldn't dream of deleting the blog". Looks like the administrator was acknowledging and appreciating the obvious fact that her site was indeed an archive of valuable information.

Hmmm. "I'm simply glad that WDW is there." Well, something seems to have happened since that day in January because when you click on his link to see the administrator's goodbye, you are met with a salmon colored web page which tells you the domain is for sale .
Wet, Dark and Wild was a big dog, along with the Dave Cullen Forum website, the original Waiting for Toothy, Gyllenbabble and later on, Oh My Godot. DC Forum imploded due to a dwindling supply of Fan Fic writers, but also stifling intimidation and censorship. DCF is now a ghost town, although still breathing. The original Waiting for Toothy is long gone, now replaced by its kindred spawn, Waiting for Toothy 2, a website whose proclaimed purpose was all about hanging out, with other like-minded posters, waiting for Jake Gyllenhaal to come out of the closet. Much later the site curiously changed to a Jake and Austin blog, but really only to hyper focus on selling the notion that Austin Nichols-Is-Straight, which was completely contrary to everything Ted Casablanca ever wrote about Gray Goose.
Gyllenbabble is still active as well, a good resource for Jake's professional activities, but like the DC Forum, thumbs its nose down at talk of Jake's "personal" life, unless, of course, it pertains to a "new woman".
Oh My Godot? OMG is an extensive archive of Jake AND Austin Nichols history dating back to 2007. Jake's social media team ensured that Oh My Godot would not survive online activity by using a troll(s) to spam discussions 24/7 by 2016 so much so until moderation was a necessity everytime bloggers tried to discuss any topic. Eventually, cyberbullying the blog into silence. Special K, very much still a Jake-Austin and Family Tile believer, has thankfully kept the blog available in its original form and did recently post, so never say never with Oh My Godot.
This aggressive, silencing attack on free and open discussion however, created the birth of Narnia Dispatches, a closed community where Jake's Team has tried in so many ways to infiltrate, but has continued to be unsuccessful. Interesting, isn't it, that none of these other Jake Gyllenhaal blogs experienced the foul, relentless trolling that Oh My Godot did?
It will probably remain a mystery about the total disappearance of WDW, but the picture remains clear that Jake's team are drawing shutters, closing windows, and sealing doors. The first sign was the firing of Ted Casablanca within six months of Jake signing with WME in 2012, and the expunging has only continued since then. Articles being deleted from the Internet, links removed, dates altered, twitter accounts suddenly inactive or privated, etc.

ReplyDeleteIt was no mystery PG, the owner of the blog who lives in Great Britain told her followers years ago that the blog was closing because she did not have time to keep the blog up. She did go to a lot of things all Jake but her real life was becoming to busy and she was not ape shit crazy and lived in reality. The reality being it too much of her time and not a lot of posters/visitors. WDW did not dabble in crazy Toothy Tile rumors like PG, it actually focused on Jakes career so if Jake's management team had any interest in WDW then it would be to keep it going. WDW was not a crazy stalker blog like Narnia, in order words the owner was not insane.
Just proves how desperate PG is to put WDW up as some sort of victim of Jakes team. PG should that many people still keep in touch with the owner and maybe someone (me) will tell her that you are using her old blog to defame Jake.

Is it an exchange of money or an exchange of favors? I tend to think it is both, $$ and certainly favors. That's how this shit works, non? ;) Think about it. With producing credits on "The Deuce" and "The Kindergarten Teacher," the actress has found a new approach to an old challenge.
ReplyDeleteWhen Jessica Chastain condemned cinematic portrayals of women after spending 10 days as a Cannes Film Festival juror, Maggie Gyllenhaal had deja vu: She had a similar experience as a member of the Berlin International Film Festival’s jury in February. After watching 25 movies in two weeks, the actress grew frustrated.
“There were some amazing performances by women, but one of them was about this woman obsessed with her lover, and in two others, the women were mentally ill,” she said. “So I really related to what Jessica Chastain said. In my life, I think there have been very few representations of women that feel like something I can actually recognize as relating to my experience.”
Now, as a producer on both of her upcoming projects, she’s finding a new way to address that challenge.
Gyllenhaal was speaking from the set of “The Kindergarten Teacher,” the second film from writer-director Sara Colangelo, whose feature debut “Little Accidents” premiered at Sundance in 2014. Adapted from Israeli filmmaker Nadav Lapid’s drama, Gyllenhaal plays Lisa Spinelli, a restless Staten Island teacher who takes special interest a five-year-old student’s poetry.
The project was developed almost entirely by women, including Pie Films’ Talia Kleinhendler and Osnat Keren (who produced the original) and Maven Pictures co-founders Trudie Styler and Celine Rattray, who financed the project. Gyllenhaal said she took on producer responsibilities as she became more invested in the project’s success. “I want to be a part of making all the decisions that make this movie sing, not just the acting,” she said. “The film is really centered on a woman’s mind. It really is a very feminine kind of experience.”
She also has a producing credit on HBO’s “The Deuce,” the new series from “The Wire” creator David Simon about the ’70s-era legalization of the porn industry, in which she plays prostitute Eileen “Candy ” Merrell, who eventually became a porn actress and director. When HBO first offered the role to Gyllenhaal, Simon had written only three of the first season’s eight episodes. While his reputation spoke for itself, she was concerned about jumping what could be a simplistic role. “Often, women have to take what we can get and say, ‘That looks sort of what I can recognize,'” she said.
She came up with a proposal to combat that fear. “I felt like, I can’t actually take on playing a prostitute without knowing the story we’re telling,” she said. “I wanted to have some guarantee that I would be a part of the storytelling process, so I asked for a producing credit.”
Her management team was skeptical. “Everybody said, ‘You’re never gonna get that in this case, with this huge, developed project at HBO,'” she said. “But they did give it to me, and I think they did it to say that they wanted me to be a part of the storytelling process, that they respect my mind as well as my body.
