Q: When Deadline ran that first picture of you in the boxing ring in Southpaw, it almost crashed our site. As an actor, you have to use everything as a tool—and your body as a tool also—but I feel like people underestimated what a character you played there.
ReplyDeleteJake: My idea of acting, and what to do—that changes too. A lot of that’s experimental, trying to figure out what the craft is, what you need to do, what you believe in, what can create a character. It’s hard to play a boxer without knowing how to box, or getting in shape, but there are other things where maybe it’s not as necessary—I think that’s an evolution.
It’s an argument my sister and I have all the time about how much you need to change your body to play a role, and I do believe in the physical aspects of the character. I have great fun creating that. Not necessarily gaining or losing weight, getting in shape, those things, but I think the physical attributes of the character, how they behave, that’s why I love what I do. That’s so fun.
Mimicry and that creation is what I have loved since I was a kid, and that’s the thing I do it for. I love observing, I love human behavior. I love the oddities of it, the beauties of it. But it does at times get frustrating when you’re having to have conversations about the surface of things, without the acknowledgement of how much you care, or the story, or the conversations you’ve had with the filmmaker. But I don’t expect everyone to care or understand why I do what I do. That would be a futile effort. Most people have much more important things going on in their lives. I would say everybody does. And I understand that the perspective is fleeting. You see something on the street, you see a picture of someone, and it’s fun for a moment. Why is that picture interesting? Because essentially you can go, “Is that real?” And that gets passed along for a few days, and then everyone forgets and moves on.

Your move to NYC, has it impacted your relationship with your family and your work? Is that where things started to change for you?
ReplyDeleteGyllenhaal: I couldn’t really pinpoint where that happened but there were a number of things that happened in my life, my parents got divorced when I was 30, after many many years and I think my whole family sort of started to shift and change as things do when those things happen — when people express their truth it allows other people to do that. I think it has those reverberations.
My parents after many years made that decision and I think that changed the dynamic and truth spilled in, in a different way than it had. They went off and did things in their own lives and established the lives that maybe they had always wanted in an interesting way, which allowed, I think, me to do the same thing. It’s a wonderful argument, I think, to parenting in that way, when parents are doing what they love in particular. And also loving their children but that’s a part of it, doing what you love and it allows your children at whatever age to express that truth.
It is something that Bong’s movie says too, we are all yearning for a connection, and someone to show us how to do that and I think I would say, one of the politically — one of the issues in the world, nowadays, is how connected are we? To the environment, to other creatures around us, as Tilda [Swinton] would say, the “human animals around us”. And Bong would say that growing up is brutal, it’s a brutal process, that’s what this movie says. It’s as disturbing as it is extraordinary, but the only thing that we have is our connection with the things that we love.
And we should fight for those things as hard as we can.

ReplyDeleteSince Daniel Day-Lewis announced he was quitting the big screen, a power vacuum has been created, leaving many wondering who could step up as the best actor working in Hollywood today. For me, the answer is as simple as it is difficult to spell.
Since his (proper) debut in October Sky, he has managed to stand out as the most versatile, dedicated, prolific, courageous and straight-out brilliant actor of his generation. So where's the recognition?

Gyllenhaal, however, was nominated only once in nearly 40 films, for best supporting actor in Ang Lee's Brokeback Mountain. And even that was bittersweet, with the film picking up best director and screenplay while losing in all acting categories.
The reasoning behind the selection process at the awards is seldom straight forward, and I will lose no more time trying to understand it. But if there is one thing that can win over the nearly 6,000 sceptics at the Academy, is a true story about an American hero.
Stronger, directed by David Gordon Green and adapted from a book by Jeff Bauman, tells the story of how Bauman lost both his legs in the terror attack at the Boston Marathon.
A first look at the trailer is enough bang your hand on the table and yell: "Give this man an Oscar!".

ReplyDeleteNetflix has won an auction for the movie rights to an upcoming untitled feature film drama set in the art world and starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Rene Russo. Dan Gilroy will direct from his own script. The project re-teams Gilroy with “Nightcrawler” stars Gyllenhaal and Russo in which the former played an ambitious cameraman and the latter a local news producer.
Gilroy has been directing a legal thriller with Denzel Washington for Sony, which recently changed the title from “Inner City” to “Roman Israel.”
Gyllenhaal stars Netflix’s “Okja,” directed by Bong Joon-Ho, which competed at the Cannes Film Festival last month. The movie also starred Korean child actress Ahn Seo-hyun alongside Tilda Swinton and Paul Dano. Netflix will make “Okja” available to stream on June 28.

Russo, Gilroy’s wife, is starring in the action comedy “Villa Capri” with Morgan Freeman and Tommy Lee Jones. Broad Green is releasing the movie on Nov. 22.

When you see an old winter stage door fan pic get retweeted "out of the blue", you realize that they aren't even using file photos to place him in NYC during this summer hiatus.
Instead his team uses trailer releases and a real estate story to Botox his social media timelines, hoping his stans don't notice that he's hiding how he's really spending his summer break which is with his kids while Austin has been getting his own "me" time.

Again, it's not believable. And he's not the only one. Maggie and Peter are the same way. The whole Gyllenhaalgaard group went into the closet right along with Jake, Austin and their kids. Big Sis, bro in law are only seen when a charity or fashion society event or premiere calls for an appearance. That way it looks like they all still live in NYC.
