ReplyDeleteThere's no shortage, of course, of leading men on Broadway, either. Two new candidates have arrived this season to join their ranks. Ben Platt, the young star of Dear Evan Hansen (who is the son of film and theatre producer Marc Platt), is astonishing in the title role; but the even more stunning breakthrough is Jake Gyllenhaal, already a global movie star, who proved that he's a startlingly brilliant singer as he reprises the demanding title role of Stephen Sondheim's Sunday in the Park With George at Broadway's Hudson Theatre. He first did it for a handful of performances last autumn at City Center, one of which I saw and was knocked out by; but now he's got an even bigger job on his hands, singing it eight times a week on Broadway.
The performance is just thrilling. Who knew he could sing with such intensity, focus and pitch? Sunday in the Park With George was the first Sondheim musical I saw in its original New York production back in 1985, and I thought nothing could ever match the spellbinding memory of that show or its two vibrant, radiant stars, Mandy Patinkin and Bernadette Peters.
But Gyllenhaal, joined here by the lovely Broadway actor Annaleigh Ashford, definitely competes. It is running for a limited season to April 23 only; and a result, the producers have decided not to enter it for consideration for this year's Tony Awards (for which they'd have to make around 1,600 tickets available to Tony voters if they did so). That leaves the performance and revival fields generously open to other shows; but I can't help feeling that the award could well have been Gyllenhaal's if they'd entered it.

While we're not positive where the "mom" is, we know that this tweeter is in....New York City. Since she says "the airport", that seems to infer a local airport for her. If it were an airport in another state, I would think she would refer to the actual name, but I'm not going to throw down the gavel on that one.

We return to the tweet sighting of Jake at the airport on Thursday morning and wonder why it could have been viable? We know he couldn't have been departing because he had performances stateside to do this weekend. And this airport tweet came at 05:33 am ET. That's pretty darn early. Could he have been giving his boo Austin a lift to the airport for his weekend trip to London? I doubt it. These two guys have parted ways due to business trips an endless amount of times. Nothing new there.
Or could it be that Austin was coming in on an arrival flight? Couldn't he have taken a cab from the airport, though? Surely - after all, how incredible of a driver could his hubs be? But wait. What if Austin and the Baby Tiles had still been in Michigan, but were coming into the Big Apple? Could that explain the very early arrival? Less chance of being seen. And it could explain why Jake would risk being spotted because he could not wait to see his children. He likely had been waiting to see them for some length of time, how long we are not sure. But waiting nonetheless.
And as has been the kind of luck that Jake has had sometimes - well, he got caught. Again. Now, let's throw one more log onto this little campfire. Who has a birthday coming up this Wednesday, March 15? Jake's mom, Naomi Foner. And who could have been disembarking on this wee-hour arrival flight to help celebrate? Possibly her grandchildren - the Baby Tiles en masse.

Weaving through the crowd of well-wishers at the New York Public Library fete, he headed straight for his mom Naomi, who was ready to toast her son’s latest run on the Great White Way.
ReplyDelete“It means a lot to have her here tonight,” Gyllenhaal told InStyle, when we caught up with him at the MoΓ«t and Chandon-hosted event, which also marked the reopening of N.Y.C.’s historic Hudson Theatre. In fact, the actor says it's the unwavering support from his mom—and all of the other strong women in his life—that has helped shape him into the man that he is today.
“Growing up, I was always surrounded by extraordinary women,” he said. “My grandmother, on my mother’s side, was one of the first female pediatricians in Brooklyn in the 1940s. And my great aunt was one of the first women to graduate from Columbia Law School. I was lucky to have them in my life. And when I think about it, I know I literally wouldn’t be here without them.”
Gyllenhaal’s sister, Maggie, who took in the evening performance of the musical alongside husband Peter Sarsgaard, has also has a big impact on her little bro’s life. In January, the two traveled to Washington D.C. together for the Women’s March, a movement that clearly affected them both.
“I was so proud to stand with the women, men, and children at the Women’s March on Washington,” the actor later said on Facebook. “After months of fear and shame, the gathering was full of joy, defiance, and hope. It was more clear than ever that women are the real stewards of our country’s soul, and I will continue to follow their lead and show up.”

The appearance was unexpected for Austin - not so much for Jake. Jake was scheduled to appear at Bangers, as part of his promotion for the movie Demolition which was showing at the SXSW Film Festival.

Three and a half years that dadgummed Jaustin / Toothy Tile & Grey Goose drought lasted, surviving on a diet of crossed paths, coincidences, gas fumes and ships passing in the night supported by social media alone, come to fruition and gloriously sated with this one single photo.
Why, I think time may have stood still for a mere second, the stars and planets aligned, sunbeams burst through the clouds, and those clouds - if you were not present at that moment, you may have missed the clouds....
It was and still is something to behold. Today, Narnia Dispatches celebrates nearly 15 years of Jake and Austin still knowing each other, still seeing each other, doing things together, sharing a meal, walking, being together, however you want to see their association. GMA host Michael Strahan pointed out that the Gossip Girl alum, 29, probably wouldn't be happy with his comments. “I’m moving out at the end of the month. I’m actually moving out right now, under this desk,” Reynolds quipped. “I’m already making plans.”
The Green Lantern star opened up about his close friendship with Gyllenhaal after they filmed the sci-fi thriller together. "I’ve probably done almost 50 movies in 24 years, and every time you work with people, you’re like, ‘I’m gonna hang out with this guy all the time.’ And you never see them again.”
With Gyllenhaal, it’s a different story. “I think he’s easily the most interesting actor working in Hollywood today. Definitely one of my favorites, and then at the same time, he’s one of the kindest guys I’ve ever met,” he said. "We’re hanging out all the time. We live near each other. I live up in the 'burbs.”

Yesterday was easily one of the best days I've had in a long time - I went to the National Theatre for the very first time, with a group of really close friends, to see two shows, Amadeus and Hedda Gabler - which we were both phenomenal! I casually saw Jake Gyllenhaal (who happened to be watching the same showing of Hedda Gabler) and Ruth Wilson, who after the show, nonchalantly walked past me, smoking a cigarette, having the time of her life. I can definitely say that I will be remembering it for a very long time.

Jake offers his directors many ideas to elaborate the characters. Unfortunately hardly any of his ideas were brought to life in 'Life'. He dedicates 'Life' to his recently deceased grandfather. His grandmother was the first female pediatrician in Brooklyn in the 1940s. Jake gets gloomy: 'The truth is: We get old, we die. And during this process we live in an ageless world.' He says that he's fallen in love only two or three times in his life.

Ryan Reynolds & Jake Gyllenhaal on the friendship they formed while filming 'Life'
ReplyDeleteThere's a bromance brewing between actors Jake Gyllenhaal and Ryan Reynolds.
ReplyDeleteThe Hollywood stars say they hit it off so well during the filming of their new sci-fi thriller called "Life" that a genuine friendship has blossomed. The movie, about a team of scientists aboard the International Space Station who find an alien life form from Mars, is premiering Saturday at the South by Southwest festival in Austin.
The "Brokeback Mountain" and "Deadpool" stars were mostly all jokes during rounds of press interviews prior to the film's premier, answering most questions with a back-and-forth comedy shtick. But they turned serious when asked about the connection formed on set.
"You do these films and get to work with really amazing people, really talented people and you think 'oh I'm going to hang out with these people afterward and see them again,'" said Reynolds. "You don't most of the time because you go on living your life. But with this guy, we've stayed friends. That's a lucky thing. It doesn't always happen."
Some of the first signs of the newly-forged bond came earlier this week when Reynolds gave high praise to Gyllenhaal on Good Morning America, calling him one of the most interesting actors currently working in Hollywood. Reynolds said Saturday that his co-star is "one the greatest actors of this generation."
"I loved working with this guy," he said. "I loved spending time with this guy. It's not often you get this experience."
Gyllenhaal was equally complimentary, saying Reynolds's role last year as a foul-mouthed superhero is exactly what he strives for — a performance so authentic that it would be nearly impossible for another actor to duplicate.
"We sort of grew up in this business together without knowing each other until very recently," Gyllenhaal said. "It's hard in a business where ... a lot of times we're pretending to get closer to the truth and to find somebody who you feel is genuine. I feel that way about him, so we're friends."
The movie plot draws some notable parallels to Ridley Scott's 1979 classic "Alien," tracking a team of scientists on a spaceship who encounter an alien life form that wreaks havoc. Their discovery — the first evidence of extraterrestrial life on Mars, turns out to be a threat not only to the crew but to all life on Earth.
But even with the backdrop of a sci-fi heart pounder, Gyllenhaal says he and Reynolds found some levity throughout the filming.
"This experience of what's happening right now was consistent to what it felt like while we were shooting," Gyllenhaal said in between puns served as answers to questions. "We had really scary situations in the movie and scenes that were really tense, but we were laughing constantly and it was so much fun."

The newest bromance everyone is obsessed with stars Ryan Reynolds and Jake Gyllenhaal. The two actors appear together in the upcoming movie Life, and according to a recent interview on The Tonight Show, their bond was almost too much for the set to handle.
ReplyDeleteLife takes place in outer space, therefore the costars spent much of filming suspended from wires to mimic zero gravity. Most of their bonding time took place while dangling in the air, which naturally lead to some joking around. Okay — a lot of joking around.
"So we're floating around on wires, and we're simulating zero gravity and we're being chased by an alien, it's terrifying," Gyllenhaal told Jimmy Fallon "But when we would cut, we couldn't stop laughing."
In fact, the duo was so goofy that they ended up getting pulled aside by the producers (y'know, like the two class clowns in elementary school).
"They brought us in the corner and they were like, 'You guys need to cut it out. We are wasting so much money,'" the actor remembers. Hey, you can't put a price tag on love.
"We're starting a bromance!" Gyllenhaal joked. "Gives us our time!"

ReplyDeleteJake Gyllenhaal is reteaming with his Life director Daniel Espinosa for an adaptation of the Rolling Stone article, "The Anarchists vs. ISIS."
Espinosa is set to direct the film adaptation and will produce under his newly formed production banner BOZI alongside Ninestories’ producers Gyllenhaal and Riva Marker. Bold Films chairman Michel Litvak will also produce, and CEO Gary Michael Walters will executive produce.
The Rolling Stone article, written by Seth Harp, tells the true story of a ragtag team of American volunteers, socialists and outcasts who are fighting alongside the Kurdish militia known as the YPG to beat ISIS in Syria and establish an anarchist collective amid the rubble of war.
“Thematically, we’re often attracted to material about the search for identity, especially in a world where it’s become easier to feel less and less connected," said Marker in a statement. "Seth’s story is about people who abandon everything that’s familiar as a means to connect in the most brutal of circumstances.”
Opening Friday, Life features Gyllenhaal in a sci-fi thriller about astronauts on a space station that discover an alien organism. Espinosa directed the movie, in which Ryan Reynolds also stars.
The collaboration went so well that Espinosa and Gyllenhaal began talking about other projects on which to work together.
Gyllenhaal’s Ninestories is in postproduction on David Gordon Green’s Boston Marathon bombing Stronger. The company has a deal with Bold, which financed and produced Gyllenhaal’s acclaimed 2014 drama Nightcrawler.

Jake Gyllenhaal and Ryan Reynolds have seemed quite chummy on the press tour for their new film “Life,” but Seth Meyers was determined to find out how close they really are.
ReplyDeleteDuring Gyllenhaal’s appearance on “Late Night With Seth Meyers” on Thursday, Meyers questioned the pair’s friendship, claiming that people are “fascinated” by the fact that the pair could “actually be friends.”
“When you’re with contemporaries, you’re weirdly kept apart,” Gyllenhaal said. “I don’t know what it’s about but I guess you just are.”
But Gyllenhaal’s explanation was simply not convincing enough for Meyers — the only way to prove their friendship would be to get Reynolds on the phone. But after failing to reach him via FaceTime, Meyers conceded that this proves their non-existent friendship.
“You don’t know Ryan Reynolds,” Meyers teased.
But during a commercial break came a turn of events: When Meyers went backstage to deal with a microphone issue, Reynolds returned Gyllenhaal’s call, and Gyllenhaal re-appeared on the stage to prove their friendship once and for all.
“Seth’s not here because he didn’t believe we were friends,” Gyllenhaal said while sitting in Meyer’s seat. “Here’s what I’m doing — pushing baby strollers,” Reynolds said, before teasing, “I’m gonna get my lips done, so I’ll see ya later.”
“Apologies to Jake Gyllenhaal,” Meyers later concurred. “You know Ryan Reynolds.”

Those who have seen Alien will have a pretty good idea what's coming, at least to a point. Once things reach that point, however, all bets are off.

Life has cool effects, real suspense and a sweet twist. It ain't rocket science, but it does what it does well -- even, one might say, with a kind of genius.
A horror movie that may have less to do with Gravity but much, much more with John Carpenter's masterpiece The Thing (USA, 1982).

I'm incredibly happy to welcome our new baby boy into the world, it's a moment that I will never forget for the rest of my life and my favourite memory I have so far.
I'm completely in awe of his incredible mother and how she has been the whole way through this, she's really made my dreams come true. We haven't named him yet but he's already capturing hearts including mine. I feel very blessed.
