Jake Gyllenhaal is joining Joaquin Phoenix and John C. Reilly in “The Sisters Brothers.”
ReplyDeleteJacques Audiard is directing the indie feature, based on Patrick deWitt’s novel of the same name. Reilly, Michael De Luca, Rosa Attrab and Alison Dickey are producing.
Reilly optioned the rights to the book and will produce through his shingle with De Luca, who recently came on board as producer. The story follows two brothers — Eli and Charlie Sisters — who are hired to kill a prospector who has stolen from their boss. The story takes place in Oregon in 1851.
Canadian-born author deWitt’s novel won the 2012 Stephen Leacock Memorial Medal for humor writing.
“Sisters Brothers” is Audiard’s follow-up to his Palme d’Or winning “Dheepan,” which premiered at the 2015 Cannes Film Festival. Production is set to start sometime this summer. The noir Western will be his first film shot completely in English.
Gyllenhaal is coming off a strong year with “Demolition” and “Nocturnal Animals” and has a busy few years ahead of him: His next movie “Life,” co-starring Ryan Reynolds, was featured in Super Bowl ads and debuts March 24. He also stars in the upcoming Boston marathon bombing drama “Stronger,” produced by his own Nine Stories banner for Lionsgate, and will appear in both the Netflix drama “Okja” and Paul Dano-directed movie “Wildlife,” also produced by Nine Stories. Finally, “The Division,” a feature adaptation of Ubisoft’s videogame that co-stars Jessica Chastain, recently announced Stephen Gaghan as its director.
The 36 year-old Gyllenhaal stars on Broadway in “Sunday in the Park With George,” which begins previews Feb. 11.
Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine's Sunday in the Park with George returns to the Broadway stage on February 11 at the newly renovated Hudson Theatre. Annaleigh Ashford and Jake Gyllenhaal are reprising their roles from the City Center concert. The Sarna Lapine-directed revival will officially open on February 23. As Broadway.com previously reported, the production will not be involved in the 2017 Tony race.

Marquee names and musical revivals made waves at the Broadway box office last week, with Glenn Close raking in a hefty tally in the opening week of “Sunset Boulevard” and Jake Gyllenhaal making a promising bow with the first preview of “Sunday in the Park With George.”
ReplyDelete“Sunset Boulevard” ($1,142,254) topped the $1 million mark in a seven-performance week that included its heavily comped press night and its opening. That sets “Sunset” up nicely just as the reviews — mostly raves — stand poised to move the needle further. With a limited run of just 16 weeks and only seven shows a week, the production will need to make as much money as it can, as quickly as possible, in order to turn a profit.
Another limited-run musical revival, “Sunday in the Park With George” ($136,384 for one preview), made a strong showing in its first performance, especially for a production in a house with less than 1,000 seats. Those initial sales might have been partially driven by fan interest, which is always high for first performances. But the last time Gyllenhaal was on Broadway (in Manhattan Theater Club’s “Constellations” in 2015) he proved a major draw, so the production seemingly stands a chance of keeping up those kinds of numbers.

The fingerprints of the film industry are all over the new Broadway revival of “Sunday in the Park With George.” There’s star Jake Gyllenhaal, for one thing. And there’s the unheard-of speed with which the show came together: The production at the newly refurbished Hudson Theatre was announced in mid-December, and previews began Feb. 11.
ReplyDelete“The film world is a little more fly by the seat of your pants,” says Riva Marker, president of Gyllenhaal’s Nine Stories Productions and a producer on “Sunday.”
The revival of Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine’s musical, which also stars Annaleigh Ashford, began life as a three-day concert staging in October for New York’s City Center. It wasn’t supposed to go beyond that. But when “Burn This,” the play in which Gyllenhaal was to have starred for the Hudson’s reopening, fell through, Broadway found itself with a movie star and a venue available at the same time. Marker, composer Jeanine Tesori, and Hudson Theatre owner Ambassador Theatre Group jumped.
“The way this thing came together, it felt almost like fate was pushing for it to happen,” Gyllenhaal says.
Although he made his Broadway debut in the 2015 play “Constellations,” “Sunday” marks the first time Gyllenhaal will be singing. But don’t hold your breath for a Tony: The show ends its run April 23, before nominations are announced, so the producers decided to withdraw it from consideration. “These awards are partially about getting attention and making sure people see shows that are still running,” Gyllenhaal notes. “There’s no reason to usurp any of that.”
Now that movie musicals are having a moment, it seems logical to ask which one he’d want to star in. “I’ve never been someone who goes, ‘I wanna do that.’ But at some point, Tevye would be really great,” he says, referring to the lead in “Fiddler on the Roof.” “I’m working on the beard, obviously.”

“Life,” directed by Daniel Espinosa, also stars Rebecca Ferguson, Hiroyuki Sanada, Ariyon Bakare, and Olga Dihovichnaya. The film, written by Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, centers on a team of scientists aboard the International Space Station whose mission of discovery turns to one of primal fear when they find a rapidly evolving life form that caused extinction on Mars, and now threatens the crew and all life on Earth.
“We are thrilled to close out the 2017 SXSW Film Festival with such a special film as ‘Life,'” said Janet Pierson, SXSW’s director of film. “Our audiences will love this taut space thriller’s twists and turns as well as its amazing cast.”
Producers are Skydance’s David Ellison, Dana Goldberg, Bonnie Curtis, and Julie Lynn. Sony will release the film on March 24.

The starring duo were praised with a standing ovation at curtain call led by avid Broadway fan Rosie O’Donnell with stars like Gayle King, Uzo Aduba, original cast member Bernadette Peters and Cobie Smulders joining in.
Maggie Gyllenhaal was also there to support her brother during his musical debut with their parents Stephen and Naomi and her husband Peter Saarsgard. The actress held court during intermission in the VIP Ambassador’s Lounge of the newly reopened Hudson Theatre, sipping their MoΓ«t & Chandon flutes while remarking on Gyllenhaal’s performance in the first act.

Rowdy Stovall's Instagram account was not only used to document the initial reason for all of the Nichols' presence in Michigan, but the posts also provided future cover for Austin by supplying a handy "post-crisis rehabilitation scenario" in case he is seen again. A 'Get Out of Jail Free' card if you will. Surprisingly, however, Austin has not been seen in any of Rowdy's Instagram photos. We see dad, Ashley, and even one of his nieces, but not one appearance by Austin. Zilch.
Within days, on February 9th, Rowdy posts again on his Instagram that he, Ashley and the family are returning home to Austin, TX.
He then adds a promotional-type Instagram post on February 9 about the Bates Motel (a show he is guest starring in), the same day that his sister, brother-in-law and their family are returning to Austin, TX and we assume, leaving the father "rehabbing" in Michigan. This is followed with the plethora of Valentine's tweets, Instagrams and Instagram Stories with his beard Chloe Bennet on the 14th.
For background purposes, let's explore why that Taco Bell tweet from Southgate, Michigan on January 14, 2017, unleashed such a tidal wave of PR activity. First off, Austin has many cousins who live in Portage MI on his mother's side of the family.

Here's a soon-to-be 22-year-old, lovestruck Jake Gyllenhaal proudly wearing a Michigan t-shirt in an early scene from The Day After Tomorrow. Considering that Jake's character, Sam Hall, lives in Washington, D.C., the wardrobe choice is an intriguing one.
Then in October, 2004, Jake is not seen campaigning for John Kerry in his backyard of California or even in New York, but rather in East Lansing, Michigan. Gee, I wonder why he chose that particular city to display his civic duty?

Now why would PR be so concerned about Austin's sister being seen with him in Jackson, Michigan on February 3 when she has a family of her own and a husband down in Texas?
1) Remember, Jake had been seen in Southgate, Michigan just two weeks before on January 14.
2) Narnia had published a post on February 4 speculating that Ashley was helping Austin with the kids since Jake was in NY preparing for his play and Maggie was about to fly over to Berlin.
If Jake and Austin were not an actual couple raising a closeted family, there would be no need for such an obviously manufactured and elaborate Instagram story to emerge about Austin's dad suddenly having a very public "health crisis". A crisis that conveniently forced him to be shipped off to Michigan, even though he practiced medicine in Austin, Texas for over three decades and no doubt has an enormously supportive network of professional providers down there. Never mind that Austin, TX is where Mr. Nichols and his immediate family actually live. If the whole scenario wasn't outlandish enough, the privating of all that explanatory "corroboration" only a few days later is truly laughable. Now why would PR be so concerned about Austin's sister being seen with him in Jackson, Michigan on February 3 when she has a family of her own and a husband down in Texas?

2) Narnia had published a post on February 4 speculating that Ashley was helping Austin with the kids since Jake was in NY preparing for his play and Maggie was about to fly over to Berlin.
If Jake and Austin were not an actual couple raising a closeted family, there would be no need for such an obviously manufactured and elaborate Instagram story to emerge about Austin's dad suddenly having a very public "health crisis".
