End of Toothy Tile Saga?

Jake Gyllenhaal - Pink Elephant In The Room

July 5, 2012

Ted Casablanca

The images are countless, breathtaking: Four editors-in-chief, 16 years online, piles of exclusives, plenty of gossip, invented languages, maddeningly fascinating celebrities (dead and alive) and most importantly — you. The reader.

We did this for two decades, folks! When The Awful Truth, which I founded at Premiere magazine 20 years ago, ends this week, it's not the deliciously decadent Blind Vices I will miss the most...

It's you barking types who always made me feel gloriously alive, with all you had to say and scream and be so real about.

That community is my life's (professional) work up until now. It has meant more to me than each of you will ever know.

But it really is time to move on.

If you don't agree, just keep in mind that when I first took this job at E!—in 1996, when the network founded E! Online—I was working at the established and respected Premiere magazine. Scores of people told me, "Online just isn't the place to go."

Everybody told me to pass on the job, and so I did. Then I called back the next day and an amazing man named Lew Harris said, yes, of course, I could change my mind. And I did.

So that's what I'd like my last words to be: Always do what you're not supposed to do.

And see you on Twitter @Ted_Casablanca.

A Private Hamptons Screening of End Of Watch

When Sun, August 19,7:00 pm - 10:00 pm
Where Private Residence, , East Hampton, NY (map)
Admission Invite Only
Description Gwyneth Paltrow, Jessica and Jerry Seinfeld, Ingrid Sischy and Sandra Brant invite you to join Jake Gyllenhaal at a private Hamptons screening of Open Road Films’ END OF WATCH. The film stars Jake Gyllenhaal, Michael Peña, Cody Horn, America Ferrera and Anna Kendrick. Written and directed by David Ayer. A powerful story of family, friendship, love, honor and courage, End Of Watch stars Academy Award® nominee Jake Gyllenhaal and Michael Peña as young Los Angeles police officers Taylor and Zavala as they patrol the city’s meanest streets of south central Los Angeles. Giving the story a gripping, first-person immediacy, the action unfolds entirely through footage from the handheld HD cameras of the police officers, gang members, surveillance cameras, and citizens caught in the line of fire to create a riveting portrait of the city’s most dangerous corners, the cops who risk their lives there every day, and the price they and their families are forced to pay.

Previews Begin: August 24, 2012

Fifteen-year-old Anna's weight makes her a target for bullies. When her mom Fiona (Michelle Gomez) transfers Anna (Annie Funke) to the school where she teaches in order to protect her daughter, it only makes things worse. If There Is I Haven't Found It Yet is an entertaining look at a regular family stuck somewhere between knowing what the problem is... and doing something about it. This insightful new play by Nick Payne features Tony Award–winning, Emmy-nominated actor Brían F. O'Byrne and Academy Award nominee Jake Gyllenhaal in his American stage debut.

Jake Gyllenhaal's Good Cop in 'End of Watch' said...

The F-word flies by fast, furious and often from cops and criminals in Jake Gyllenhaal's new movie End of Watch, now on its way to the Toronto Film Festival. At a special preview screening at Bryan Bantry's Goose Creek on Sunday night, the dreamy-eyed star prepared the audience for extreme violence, and for another F-word: friendship. With more edge than the typical police procedural, the film left viewers -- including hosts Jerry and Jessica Seinfeld, Gwyneth Paltrow, Ingrid Sischy and Sandra Brant, and many guests: Bruce Weber, Bob Balaban, Chris Martin, Donna Karan, Calvin Klein, Katie Lee, and Beth Ostrosky Stern -- getting over the movie's devastating end with champagne and dessert.

Everything is up close and personal, from scenes of what drug cartels do with their stash and those who cross them, to frantic users who want to silence their kids, to the families of these good cops both in the LAPD, and at home, to the front seat of the squad car where Gyllenhaal's Brian Taylor in shaved head, and his Mexican partner Michel Zavala (Michael Pena) muse about marriage, their lives and loves in a tight camera frame capturing every facial nuance, and signaling End of Watch as one of best buddy movies since Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, if more gruesome.

HP said...

On the job, both wear HD cameras, so their work answering calls and following their own crime-solving hunches is recorded. The result is jarringly real, the footage from surveillance cameras, gang members, and others part of the story, the camera as third-person omniscient narrator seeming to disappear. This makes for riveting filmmaking, giving the action an illusion of authenticity, and subjectivity. While much is owed to Michael Pena's fresh and biting script and direction, the actors added some bits too, said Gyllenhaal of the five months of preparation and 22 shooting days with much time spent driving around with South Central L.A.'s cops. For example, before Brian gets serious with his girlfriend Janet (an excellent Anna Kendrick), the guys adlibbed with Michael razzing him about marrying a Mexican girl like his wife, Gabby (a fine Natalie Martinez), who only wants babies. They laugh, cajole, and show bravery and loyalty, beyond what you may think necessary or prudent. Cody Horn and America Ferrera play another fierce and fragile cop team who should have a movie written around them.

The Hollywood Reporter and Samsung Galaxy SIII sponsored the Peggy Siegal Hamptons screening; each guest received a gift: an invitation for a free phone and to sample their new white glove service. To attend and promote his film, Gyllenhaal left the dress rehearsal for his American stage debut in Nick Payne's If There Is I Haven't Found It Yet, to begin previews in New York next week. Referring to his shiny full head of hair, he smiled wide, "It does grow back."

Ten years ago, when he starred in a London production of Kenneth Lonergan’s “This Is Our Youth,” Jake Gyllenhaal said: “Every actor I look up to has done theater work, so I knew I had to give it a try.”

Once was not enough. On Friday, the star of “Brokeback Mountain” and the upcoming cop movie “End of Watch” premieres in the Roundabout’s Off-Broadway production of Nick Payne’s “If There Is I Haven’t Found It Yet.”

In the dramedy, an award-winning hit in London in 2009, Gyllenhall plays the rudderless Terry, whose 15-year-old overweight niece, Anna (Annie Funke), is tormented by bullies. Headbutts, blood and a school suspension follow.

Terry tries to help the girl, notes a synopsis, but he’s a guy in need of rescuing himself. Ask Anna’s parents George (Brian F. O’Byrne) and Fiona (Michelle Gomez).

Terry sounds a lot like the sort of flawed but sensitive guys that Gyllenhaal, 31, does so well on screen — and this time with an English accent. The role marks his American theater debut.

The play fits comfortably in the ever-expanding roster of dysfunctional-family stories. But Payne, an up-and-coming British talent, also casts his gaze beyond the domestic to a wider, even global, gaze.

“I was interested in – it’s now a bit of a cliché – climate change,” Payne told Exeunt magazine, adding that beleaguered Anna “was a kind of metaphor for what is happening to the planet.”

“If There Is I Haven’t Found It Yet” begins Friday and runs through Nov. 25 at the Laura Pels Theatre, 111 W. 46th St. Tickets are $100; (212) 719-1300.

Hi stupid trolly!

A Conversation with Actor: Jake Gyllenhaal said...

TS: What drew you to If There Is I Haven’t Found It Yet?

JG: Terry is like de Tocqueville. He comes into this family and he observes and comments on what he sees. I love the character of Terry and I loved Nick Payne’s writing. It was that simple. And when I went to see Michael Longhurst’s production of Nick’s other play, Constellations, at the Royal Court in London, the deal was sealed. They are an unbeatable pair. They are the new generation of British theatre talent.

TS: What do you think the play is about?

JG: I think the play is about family. And it is about the desire we all have to be seen and heard by our family and how – for many different reasons – it can become hard to hear the people we love most and how hard it can be to be heard by them.

TS: How is the character of Terry relevant to you? Can you share some of your preliminary thoughts about Terry with us?

JG: I love the way he talks, how he moves through the world. He is desperate to pull the truth out of everyone around him, but he is unable to face his own. He is a constant contradiction and like this broken, beating heart with legs.

TS: How do you collaborate with a director?

JG: The director is the leader, and I’m not sure that I would say it’s about collaboration. It’s ultimately about trying to service his or her vision. If I have an idea, I will always share it – I’m not shy. I don’t believe in a dictatorship, but in the end it’s the director’s decision as to what will be suitable to their production. I like a director who has a clear and simple sense of what they want to say. When dealing with something as complicated as family drama, it takes great intelligence to make things clear and simple for an audience.

TS: How do you keep yourself inspired? What feeds you as an artist?

JG: Variation keeps me inspired. I always like finding roles that are different from the one I played before. And I love playing intentions in scenes differently every night on stage and in every take on a movie. I always try and challenge myself and surprise my fans. It makes it fun for everyone.

Ted Sod: Finally, on a lighter note, how do you prefer your last name to be pronounced? There is a YouTube video that says it is pronounced: “Yil-En-HOO-Li-Hay”.

Jake Gyllenhaal: I believe in variation, so naturally I love the many ways that people pronounce my last name. I wouldn’t trust YouTube videos in general. YouTube can be a dangerous method of fact checking, that usually ends hours later with videos of kittens yawning or with a ridiculous kung fu instructional video. I’ll save the readers of this article some time: my last name is pronounced ‘Jill-IN-hall’.

I don't, know was he spending the taxpayer's shillings on whores? Or was he on a private vacation? He's a young, handsome single guy whose done time in his country's military, doesn't serve in government. It's not like he's a US Congressman skinnydipping drunk in the Sea of Galilee, supposedly representing the US gov't on a business trip. A "fact-finding" mission, I believe.

A Big Party for a Not-So-Big Film
'End of Watch' Gets an East Hampton Screening

IN the new movie “End of Watch,” Jake Gyllenhaal plays a cop in South Central Los Angeles, working the neighborhood patrol and battling some seriously scary thugs from a Mexican drug cartel.

So there was something a little strange about this modest-size film having a private screening on Sunday night at a multimillion-dollar East Hampton estate called Goose Creek. Not to mention the crowd, which included Gwyneth Paltrow and her husband, Chris Martin; Jerry Seinfeld and his wife, Jessica; the magazine editors Ingrid Sischy and Sandra Brant; and the photographer Bruce Weber.

East Hampton, meet South Central.

“It’s full of irony,” Mr. Gyllenhaal acknowledged, as he made the rounds on a grassy area near the driveway while guests sipped Champagne.

“You kind of have to pinch yourself,” he said. “To think that we would be taking a nice car to the Hamptons for a screening with some of the most powerful people around.”

His voice trailed off.

NYT said...

The event even had corporate sponsorship. Inside the cream-colored 25,000-square-foot, eight-bedroom house, which is owned by Bryan Bantry (an agent to fashion photographers and hairstylists), representatives from Samsung were showing off a new touch-screen phone called the Galaxy S III, which was given to each of the attendees at the end of the evening. Issues of the Hollywood Reporter, which also paid for the event, abounded.

Around 7 p.m., guests (who also included Sandy Gallin, the former manager for Michael Jackson; Donna Karan; Beth Ostrosky Stern, Howard Stern’s wife; and Amanda Ross of Departures magazine) marched inside, descended a staircase and filed into a 110-seat auditorium with green velvet seats.

Many viewers had difficulty watching some of the film’s more violent moments. “I was really on the edge of my seat,” Ms. Ross said. “The violence was tough.”

At one point, Mr. Weber seemed to be hiding his head in his hands. “I’m just a photographer,” said Mr. Weber, who had recently visited South Central Los Angeles to photograph Mark Bradford, an artist there. “My life’s real simple compared to this.”

Ms. Karan also found it tough to watch (“It was amazing, if you could get through it”), but it also raised some fashion questions for her. She found Mr. Gyllenhaal and asked him why police officers don’t wear bulletproof turtlenecks.

“Why should you have your neck exposed?” she asked. “I’ve decided this. You’re going to have a whole new uniform."

“L.A.P.D. fashion by Donna Karan,” said a handler for Mr. Gyllenhaal standing nearby.

A bar was set up on the porch, with heaps of chips and guacamole. The actor Bob Balaban and his wife, Lynn Grossman, were milling about with the film’s producer, John Lesher.

“What’s the budget?” Ms. Grossman asked.

“Seven million dollars,” Mr. Lesher said, adding that this was the hardest movie he’d ever made.

“Well, it’s really impressive,” Ms. Grossman said. “It’s hard to cover an area like this and make it seem fresh, but it does it. I hope it gets consideration.”

Performances begin for IF THERE IS I HAVEN'T FOUND IT YET starring Jake Gyllenhaal: http://bit.ly/PMdo66

Anonymous said...

“What I loved most about working in London, in the theater, there was a real appreciation of potential,” Gyllenhaal told the New York Times. “No one comes out of the gate 100 percent perfect. No one. I have a great sense of comfort onstage because I know taking risks is appreciated.” Rather than pursue a high-profile Broadway role, the 31-year-old actor will play a heartbroken drifter who forms a surprising bond with his overweight and bullied niece (Annie Funke) in If There Is I Haven't Found It Yet.

Gyllenhaal recalls being enthralled by Patti LuPone's rendition of "I Get a Kick Out of You" during a childhood outing to the 1987 Broadway revival of Anything Goes (though he admits he eventually fell asleep). But his impetus to take the stage again became stronger after seeing his sister Maggie Gyllenhaal starring in Classic Stage Company's revivals of Uncle Vanya and Three Sisters.

"Around the time I hit 30, I asked myself if I was respecting acting as a craft,” Gyllenhaal said of his career path, “and if I was doing the right projects that deserved my attention and where I’m learning in a way that you might not feel at 15. So now it’s like I look at acting more as building little delicate cricket cages, with care and more thought.”

Well, the Jake G play felt longer than Uncle Vanya...

The Play

It's fair to say that BBMISwear/Lisa loved the play, which is an intense ride - there is no intermission. But what was a big surprise is how funny the play is! 'It is very, very funny - I don't think the audience expected to laugh that much but most all did and did so a lot!' but 'It is also very intense and sad and one particular scene is heart wrenching - I was not the only person who shed tears.'

There is a lot of swearing. A LOT. Jake swears 'every 3rd word...seriously, every 3rd word!!' His character of Terry also doesn't hold back. Jake says and does and discusses 'all sorts of things you might not expect'. He wears the 'drifter look' throughout and apparently his British accent is very good (although personally I'm interested to hear how that holds up over the run and also what kind of accent it is).

After the Play

At the end of the play 'the cast and crew filed out of the theater in dribs and drabs over the course of two hours but Jake took the longest to leave. A fair amount of fans waited to see him - some gave up after waiting an hour or more - some stayed the full 2 hours and 10 minutes (yes, I was one of them)! He was good about pictures and autographs but not real talkative and looked pretty wiped out! (And for good reason)!

I mostly hung back as people really swarmed him and I've done the picture thing with him a couple of times already!' 'He had 2 guys escorting him away and I did catch up with them for a minute as they were walking away and said "Hey Jake - I just wanted to say hi" and he looked up and said "Hey, nice to see you" which was nice of him. I then told him he did a great job tonight and he thanked me and off they went! There was one pap taking pictures as he walked away and lots of fans taking pictures with him when he came out of the theater so I'm sure there will be plenty to see online in the coming days!'

Both Gyllenhaals live in New York now — Maggie in Brooklyn, Jake downtown in Manhattan — and Ms. Gyllenhaal has had high profile turns in Chekhov plays at Classic Stage Company in recent years. Mr. Gyllenhaal saw those and said he came away envious of his sister being exhausted and enthralled by theater work.

As with “End of Watch,” Mr. Gyllenhaal aggressively pursued a role in this new play — a bit strange for a celebrity, given that many theater producers are desperate to cast one, but perhaps not so unusual for an actor determined to reorient his career. Mr. Gyllenhaal came across “If There Is I Haven’t Found It Yet” a couple of years ago, after attending a play reading of a friend and asking around for new scripts to read. He flew to London to meet with the writer, Nick Payne, and continued talking about options for staging the work in the United States.

Now, the Next Stage

They couldn't arrange photos from the first preview?!? Jake has the worst PR ever!

Anonymous said...

What kind of arranged photos are you looking for? It's not common practice to have a professional photographer there at the opening night of previews - that's usually saved for the official opening night.

Anonymous said...

It is common practice that first preview is celebrated (too) in some way and used for a bit of promotion.

Anonymous said...

There have been articles online and in print touting the play. The NYT article that's been online for several days appears in today's Sunday edition - which is a pretty good piece of promo.

Anonymous said...

It just doesn't make sense not to use first preview to promote Jake and the play. Most gossip sites would be happy to publish Jake photos and that would be very, very cheap promo.

Anonymous said...

+ Jake has new movie coming out, another reason for creating publicity.

From WDW comment:

We saw Jake again when he exited the theater - I got a nice "Oh Hi!" from him which made the guy next to me say "he obviously recognizes you now" which made me laugh! I had told the guy a few of my Jake stories earlier! :-) Jake said no photos & we had to respect that. We saw him again when he returned which was a fluke as we were planning to head right to Brooklyn from there but my friend saw someone she new outside the theater & we stayed a bit to talk & back Jake came - he walked in quickly almost with blinders on which got us talking to the security guy out front. He told us Jake has been a really nice guy (I agreed & shared how he has been the other times I've met him). He said it looked like he has been trying to stay focused & that is probably why he is not wanting to stop & talk to people while going in & out (I agreed with this also & told him I understood & made sure I said it loudly as some people around me did not feel that way). More on that below.

A side note: The guy he has been going in & out of the theater with is his assistant and has been working with him since February. Some appearance details: I forgot to mention from Friday that Jake's character has tattoos - one big one going up the right side of his neck that you can see coming out above the collar of his tee, one large one on the inside of his right forearm & one small one on the front of his left hand. I thought after seeing him outside that I can't recall if they were still there or not - some of us were discussing if they would be removed or stay on between the afternoon & evening shows. I guess when seeing him one locks on to his face & things like fake tattoos go unnoticed - ha ha! I will say when he walked away we very much enjoyed the real Jake Look of tight dark blue jeans & well fitted white tee vs. the Terry Look of very loose faded jeans & loose tee. Jake is looking real good right now!!

Now I just want to comment on the comments being made online & outside the theater re: Jake not wanting to stop for pictures & autographs. Most of us REAL fans understand him being tired, short on time & trying to stay focused & have respected him not wanting to stop (as I discussed with the security person). But there are real Theater Junkies in NYC & believe me they are a breed of their own - ha ha! These people wait at stage doors as many hours as they sit inside theaters - they do it at hundreds of shows & seriously "expect" the actors to stop & sign & pose. They go on & on about how all the big stars do it - even the film stars & they are getting pissed Jake isn't into it. Be prepared for these slighted comments to come I guess. I just hope Jake keeps doing what he feels is right for him. We'll see as time goes on I guess!

Several dozen fans waited more two hours to greet Jake Gyllenhaal after Friday’s first preview of “If There Is I Haven’t Found It Yet.” And when he finally exited the Laura Pels Theatre on W. 46th St., he stopped to sign only a handful of Playbills, leaving the rest of the crowd, like 14-year-old birthday girl Cassie O’Connor, heartbroken. “I’m sad. But he made eye contact with me ... so that was something,” she told our Nicole Lyn Pesce. Her mother, Stacy O’Connor, wasn’t so gracious: “He kept us waiting because he was probably partying with people who didn’t even have to pay to see the show. ... This is ridiculous.” Maribel de la Torre, 32, of South Slope, Brooklyn, stomped away saying, “This is f— bulls—!”

It is a little odd that after years of only hiring women PA's, Jake has a man for a PA. Maybe he's growing up and isn't so concerned about what people will say and perhaps he's inching out of the deep closet to a semi-glass closet?
