After the success of Incendies (nominated in 2011 for an Oscar for Best Foreign Film), the filmmaker will now adapt a novel, The Double by Portuguese Nobel Prize winner José Saramago, to the big screen, on a screenplay by Javier Gullón. President Obama is in town for the day, speaking at a college graduation and two campaign fundraisers, including an event hosted by Ricky Martin and a gay organization just days after he said he now supports same-sex marriage.
At Barnard College Monday afternoon, Obama told graduates that they and their generation will lead the country to better days.
"I will join you every step of the way," he said.
The president challenged the graduates to embrace and rekindle the spirit of change. He implored them to stand up be heard, not just "sit back and watch."
Later Monday evening, about 200 people are expected at the Ricky Martin event at the Rubin Museum of Art. Tickets start at $5,000, according to an Obama campaign official.

What started as a guys night out recently for Jay-Z, Jake Gyllenhaal, Pharrell Williams and some other male pals, was soon interrupted by Beyoncé Knowles's mom Tina and sister Solange.
But that didn't seem to be a problem. The gang, who partied at the D'usse Cognac Launch party at The Top of the Standard in New York City, seemed in great spirits, hanging out in a roped-off section, watching the Knicks basketball game on TV.
"They were very cheerful, laughing and enjoying the game," an onlooker tells PEOPLE. "Several partygoers tried to steal pics."

Pretty predictable about the "Time to Dance" nomination for "best" music video at the upcoming Worldwide Short Film Festival in Toronto. First, the production has an A-list actor in the lead, secondly it has Daniel Wolfe directing. Thirdly, it has senseless violence. A surefire formula for popular culture success. Who cares if the music is a pile of excrement. It has 8 and a half freaking minutes of awesome blood-soaked mayhem!
In my opinion, the production, although slick, is still a pretentiously self indulgent and unrelatable mish mash of disjointed imagery, simply meant to shock from beginning to end. The video may meet the minimum standard goal of leaving a lasting impression, but for what purpose? A parody of slasher films with a psycopathic Jake Gyllenhaal murdering hipsters for the fun of it while leading a mundane, pointless existence? Okaaaay.
I wonder if the lead character was some unattractive nobody, if folks would be squeeeeeing and gagaing over how wonderful this "artistic" performance was? Or, if Gyllenhaal had been slashing up puppies or babies with the same exact script and visual content, would that be alright too? I mean, why not? The music/lyrics had no relationship to the imagery of the video anyway so why not be completely outrageous and bash a baby otter's head in? Let's just say that a vacant, glazed stare burning throught the screen reflects upon the audience as well.
I love the over the top hype for this "performance" when we know that a crudely made video of penguins dancing on a tight rope can get a million hits in an hour. Ah, the wonders of the internet. It seems that all marketing has to do is hire an A-list actor, then write exaggerated reviews that suggest that this is a rhapsodic, hypnotic exploration of modern day society and the buzz begins. Throw in a heap of blood and guts and you got the masses wanting more.

Jake Gyllenhaal in Toronto as preparations for An Enemy heat up and a catch up with Maggie
Having spent a few days back in NYC, helping to knock the inhabitants into shape by taking over the SoulCycle spin class again, Jake Gyllenhaal is now in Toronto where An Enemy is due to begin filming on 22 May. Tweets spotted Jake at the airport and then in the city where the sets for the movie were being built. When Jake wasn't helping with that (no doubt putting those legendary carpentry skills to good use), he was outside having a smoke. He has also been meeting with other potential members of the cast.
Being in Toronto may come in handy next month for Jake when The Shoes' Time to Dance video is entered in the Scene Not Herd section of the Toronto Short Film Festival. More details here.
End of Watch is released in the US on 28 September. On the same day, Maggie's film Won't Back Down is also released (conflict of interest for relatives). The trailer has just been released.

Bad choice.
Maggie Gyllenhaal would love to work with her husband again, but avoids doing it because neither of them would be home to "put the kids to bed".
Maggie and Peter Sarsgaard have two daughters together; Ramona, five, and one-month-old Gloria Ray.
Peter is directing his first feature film, Born to Run, and Maggie says although she'd love to collaborate on the new project, their priority is always their children.
"He and I work so well together, talking about drafts, about the script, talking about casting. I'd do whatever he wanted. I really enjoy talking with him about projects and helping him think things through," she told USA Today. "Artistically we're a good combination. I love acting with him. My experience acting with him is on stage, and I love it, but I don't know how we'll do that for a long time.
"It means neither of us is home to put the kids to bed."
Maggie is embracing motherhood for the second time. The 34-year-old star has joked that having a few years gap in between her two girls has left her feeling out of practice.
"I'm curious to see how much I remember about nursing and changing diapers. About all of it. I have no idea how to do it with two," she quipped.
"Having children is the most humbling thing you can do."
Maggie lives in New York City with her family. The stunning star and Peter regularly talk about how they will juggle parenthood with their Hollywood careers.
"Peter was joking with me the other day. He said, 'How are either of us ever going to work, ever?' We've figured out pretty well how to do it with one. At first we would take her with us. Now she's in kindergarten and it's important that she's settled," she mused. "I wouldn't take her out for any old thing."
Samuel Goldwyn Films has acquired U.S. rights to Stephen Gyllenhaal’s Grassroots, starring Jason Biggs, Joel David Moore, Lauren Ambrose, Cobie Smulders, Tom Arnold, Christopher McDonald and Cedric The Entertainer.
Goldwyn is planning a June 22 release to take advantage of the fact that the movie will have its world premiere as the closing night film at the Seattle International Film Festival on June 10.
“We are thrilled to be working with Stephen and his team on this highly entertaining and engaging film about the inner workings of a political campaign. The fact that we’re in an election year with the Occupy Movement front and center, makes the film all the more relevant and timely,” Peter Goldwyn, senior vp of acquisitions, said.

Did you know that Jake Gyllenhaal is in Toronto? He’ll be here to work on Denis Villeneuve’s film An Enemy from May 22 to July 13, but he arrived earlier than his expected call time and has already been spotted across the city. Gyllenhaal was out eating at Hiro Sushi in the St. Lawrence Market area last night, and just the sight of him is sending girls into a frenzy (okay, so far we can count one girl, but still). There’s also a rumour that Gyllenhaal will be staying at Toronto’s Thompson Hotel. We’ll be sure to keep a lookout for him taking his morning run.
