I was just watching Taylor Swift on Regis and Kelly (her performance was a repeat) and good god, I know she's young but jeez she really comes off as a little girl playing grownup. While surely friends and family close to Reese Witherspoon are gushing over her engagement, it seems likely that ex-boyfriend Jake Gyllenhaal is not amongst them. Gyllenhaal and Witherspoon dated seriously, but broke it off for good because Gyllenhaal wanted to get engaged, whereas Reese wasn't wanting to tie the knot.
Or, at least, that was the story.

But the fact is he got fucked, not because he came out, but because so many of his gay actor colleagues didn't. If the majority of gay movie stars would simply come out of the closet, then Hollywood would just grow up and get the fuck over it. Therefore, he shouldn't be falling into the pit of advising other actors not to come out because he had a rough time. He should, if anything, realize that what he did took courage and advocate that a great many others show the same.
Other professions grew up because gay men and women came out of the closet. Now, nobody gives a shit if an attorney, doctor or even a teacher is gay. The great irony is that, of all professions, acting - one known for a very long time to have a great many gay people in it - remains the most closeted.

His film career failed in part because he made stupid choices. He did "Inspector Gadget" followed by that dreadful movie with Madonna. Both of which sunk his mainstream career. The simple fact that he refuses to admit that his choices played a role in this negates his argument.
It was great that he came out, but just because he was the first openly gay actor does not mean he should have been given a free pass to make utter shit for the rest of his career.
And he's not encouraging more actors to come out, he's basically saying that it was a mistake for him to and is advising others not to follow in his steps.
Mr. Everett makes the familiar error of confounding anecdote with statistical evidence. His experience was his experience, and it was what it was for specific reasons, perhaps one of which being his coming out and when and how he did it. But there is a lot more to his case than that - his individual talent - and its limits, his personality, his reputation, his period of Madonna-mingling, his appearance, his choice of support people, etc.
There are always more good actors than there are jobs available, and work drops out of the sky for very few. Look at the gay actors mentioned here and the numerous other working gay actors not noted who have kept visible after their coming out.
This isn't to say that an out leading man is going to be successful in the business today as a hetero romantic star of the first rank, but unless and until a top-notch gay actor in that position comes out, the issue cannot be tested. If (I have to say "if because I don't know him) Hugh Jackman is gay he's a perfect example of the compromise, as is Travolta, whose position seems more obvious, although his status as a leading man has passed. They convince themselves they want a family and a "normal" life and that they can "be themselves" too in private, and that in the end they are protecting the family they create by keeping closeted because their career comes first, or some other circular pattern like that.

Right now if a A-lister comes out I have a feeling the gay mafia will make sure he has jobs. It will be a great asset to the community and there will be enough respect from sympathetic producers/directors to cast him initially. Even if it means losing a few "leading men" roles, I just don't see a huge downfall or career suicide that people are led to believe. One door closes, another one may open. More opportunities on broadway and in TV.

Take it from someone who worked in the business for years. Hollywood is homophobic insofar as they think that public knowledge of one's sexuality will adversely affect believability in a role (especially romantic straight ones), mainstream acceptability and overall box office. In that sense, it's still a radically conservative industry. Ellen is successful as a gay personality. Which is not the same thing as an actor.
