Actually, Jake started having trouble getting good parts when he began exploring the possibility of coming out in 2006. I wonder, sometimes, if he isn't actually still being punished for this violation of the rules. I know many here don't think this, but I happen to be someone who thinks Jake may have decided to start a family in 2007. That's why he went into the closet that same year. At first, I found it hard to believe, but a lot would be explained about the way his career has faltered ever since. Maybe the less than successful career he's had since 2007 has nothing to do with him being lazy or unlucky. He might just be preoccupied with different priorities.

Because of Reeke, he didn't even have to do public appearances for over 2 years (11/07-12/09). Yet, when the two alledgedly broke up, he's constantly talking about family and having children, which he rarely did before.
I believe the bearding is done to help hide the obvious change in his lifestyle, to distract the public and to keep him relevant and in the news, without having to work too hard. That's why the beards have to be high profile.
With Reeke he came out for his photoshoots about every 14 days, allowing him to not have to be seen out and about town as a single bachelor. Finally, look at him this summer. He was practically a hermit. Out of sight and unconcerned about whether he had projects line up for 2011. Wouldn't be surprised if he was nesting with the family. In the past, he would have been ambitiously vying for available roles or seen out and about town, like any active, healthy bachelor. Now, he's telling us that he isn't even going to be doing the gym anymore and that he's reassessing his career. Maybe writing and directing. Maybe pursuing comedies. Actually, the last movie Jake was associated with that had no relationship to him settling down with his boyfriend, and raising a family together, was Zodiac. The film was critically acclaimed and made (combined Domestic and International box office) $84 million, with a production budget of $65 million.
The first film that was truly associated with Jake becoming domesticated was the whole Reeke/Rendition project which, in retrospect, seemed to be directly associated with providing Jake cover for his new emerging family plans. In addition, to making the Chin look like she was still desirable.

I understand your part about being serious about acting. How can you say he's not? I beleive Jake and most actors are serious about their craft. Dating other high profile stars are another thing. But it happens and sometimes work.
I guess one of your example is Christian Bale.
None of us are there going thru the scripts, the casting, the producers of these movies. Every producer thinks his movie is a winner or awards, well most. It's after the actors are picked and the movie is finished that determines if it's a hit or miss.
Posters here claiming that Jake's career is over because he is not in some cool or award winning film are living in a fantasy world. It's easy to sit at the computer and complain about something you have no inner workings of or about.
So many great stars don't get mentioned for awards their entire career. Then some get a nod or win (something) in the sunset of their acting careers. And just as Jake, there will be some misses and flopps along the way. It's a crap shoot. I read somewhere Jake passed up the lead part in Avatar. Well the movie was huge and made mega millions. But Sam didn't win any awards and I don't think JaKE Would have either.
All of this movie making stuff has become more of a crap shoot, or the studios buy or lobby for their movies awards.
Clooney has had more flops than hits. Brad Pitt has not won an award. A movie I seen recently "Traitor" was a great movie. Not promoted much and not many saw it. It had an award winning performance by Don Cheadle. No buzz at all. Plenty of movies don't get promoted well. I guess all actors should be looking for that script that can guarantee and award huh? They can, but it don't work.

Before posters begin to verbally beat the shit out of me, let me get some things straight. Even if I believed Jake was bi/straight I'd never want him to hook up with a fellow celeb, an unknown woman would be the best choice. Someone who will not overshadow his career.
The following is not me being a latent shipper, but someone who thought about certain things concerning Jake and Michelle.
So, even though I don't think Jake was dating Michelle 12 years ago, I do think they knew each other and hung out for a while before BBM. The guy at "meet the famous" who saw Jake picking up Michelle after her play regularly refered to Michelle as Jake's gf, but it's just assumption on his part, they probably just hung out. Jake's godmother, JLC, who did "Halloween" with Michelle probably introduced them. Jake was in the 2nd year of college and Michelle was on a break from DC and did the play "Killer Joe" in NYC. That said, I think Jake knew Michelle longer than Heath up until Brokeback. And even though I believe Jake and Heath became friends during BBM, I think his friendship with Michelle intensified. And I think she had a say who the godfather of her child should be. I wouldn't be surprised if she decided altogther and went for Busy and Jake and Heath agreed. And she and Heath were probably like... "you decide this time, I'll do it the next". Just a thought. I have no doubt we'll find out anyway in the near future, but I wouldn't be surprised if my theory was correct.
