This past weekend, the New Yorker held its annual festival, which -- as always -- includes a multitude of speakers and panels discussing a variety of topics. Top players in all professions were represented, including Stephen King, Malcolm Gladwell, Jake Gyllenhaal and Regina Spektor -- all chatting about themselves and their areas of expertise. Our favorite, though, would have to have been Cynthia Nixon on the panel discussion "Love and Obstacles: The Case for Gay Marriage."
Ms. Nixon, who is most known for her role has Miranda Hobbes in Sex and the City, and now is engaged to education activist Christine Marinoni, stole our hearts with her rather calm, well made argument. Not only does she make a good case, she makes an example of how to make said point.
“Gay people who want to marry have no desire to redefine marriage in any way. When women got the vote, they did not redefine voting. When African-Americans got the right to sit at a lunch counter alongside white people, they did not redefine eating out. They were simply invited to the table. And that is all we want to do. We have no desire to change marriage. We want to be entitled to not only the same privileges, but the same responsibilities as straight people.”

Anderson Cooper Calls Out Another Fully Grown Gay Bully
Horrible homophobic person Clint McCance resigned from an Arkansas school board tonight on AC360 after writing awful things on Facebook regarding last Wednesday's "Wear Purple Day," when educators and students were intended to show support for homosexuals and fight gay bullying by wearing purple. McCance had updated his status to say: "Seriously they want me to wear purple because five queers committed suicide. The only way im wearin it for them is if they all commit suicide. I cant believe the people of this world have gotten this stupid. We are honoring the fact that they sinned and killed therselves because of their sin." (Sic throughout, obviously.) In the comments of his Facebook status, McCance promised to disown his own children if they are gay and stated that he enjoys "the fact that [gay people] give each other AIDS and die." But on CNN this evening, Anderson Cooper set him straight, and the ostensibly embarrassed and regretful homophobe said, "I'm sorry I've hurt people with my comments. I'm sorry I made those ignorant comments and hurt people on a broad spectrum. I would never support suicide for any kids. I don't support bullying of any kids." And then he resigned on air. So, there are some positives from a negative here:
1. Arkansas is getting less homophobic? Sure, this whole thing began with a terrible outburst of Arkansas-based homophobia, but it really began with an Arkansas-based "Wear Purple Day," first of all. More important, McCance faced heavy criticism from the school board that forced him to publicly resign and apologize. And he lives in Arkansas. Also, he's old, and some hopeful part of us would like to think his generation is a dying breed, even in Arkansas, and maybe the students were more okay with "Wear Purple Day," and think McCance is gross.
2. You can't just write totally homophobic things on the privacy of your own Facebook anymore. Time was, you only had to publicly express tolerance if you were some sort of left-leaning politician or a celebrity. School board members are the last people who should ever be homophobic, of course, but this guy is still basically a private citizen who wrote something disgusting on Facebook and got called out for it. This is good! Tolerance need not only apply to public figures.
3. This is the second gay-bullying adult Anderson Cooper has called out this month. (The first being Michigan Assistant Attorney General Andrew Shirvel.) It's unfortunate that there are gay-bullying adults at all, but it's something that they're appearing on AC360 and subsequently losing their jobs. Is Cooper becoming a bolder gay-rights advocate?
In any case, baby steps?

The one name that faded the hardest for me recently was Anne Hathaway for Love and Other Drugs, a Jerry Maguire knock-off that doesn't come close to living up to the hype that was generated earlier this year. The film starts off all right with both Hathaway and co-star Jake Gyllenhaal charming the pants off the audience, but as it moves on it just gets worse and worse to the point you are waiting for the "You complete me" and "You had me at hello" quotes at the end. I don't see a nomination in Hathaway's future, though the film will certainly enjoy a major push as it was just announced Hathaway will follow Scarlett Johansson one week later as host of "Saturday Night Live" on November 20, four days before the film's release.
Jake is too old for those types of photoshoots anymore, talk about looking foolish ad desperate.

While her Love & Other Drugs co-star is in LA under the microscope for his recent dalliance with Taylor Swift, Anne Hathaway was spotted in New York last night at the opening of the off Broadway production of Angels in America: A Gay Fantasia on National Themes. She was accompanied by her boyfriend Adam Shulman who’s pictured in one of these shots behind her near the cab. I love what she’s wearing.
In fact, I love her everything right now. All of it. The acting, the choices, the distance we’ve had from her since her last Oscar campaign, the Vogue spread, oh damn the Vogue spread, Annie is doing so many things right. And if you’ve read One Day, of course we’re all hoping that she gets Emma right as well.
As for Love & Other Drugs, my review is coming. It’s not even November yet. The film opens November 24th.
In other Anne news, it was just announced yesterday that she will return to host SNL on November 20th. Last time she wasn’t bad, not bad at all. I still laugh at the Mary Poppins skit. Click here if you’ve never seen it.

Five already? Time flies. Happy birthday. Matilda is probably almost as tall as Michelle by now. Matilda has her dad's stature, tall with very strong bones. While I found that to be good on Heath, not sure if it's good on a girl. Better she got after her tiny, sweet mom. But in the end health is what is important, not looks.

Franco is cool and edgy. He's writing, going to college , doing exhibitions, directing, doing soap operas. He is doing all that, not pretending or just taking pictures in full drag.

I like Franco much better than boring conventional Gosling and if I weren't a die hard Jake fan I would probably even like him more than post-BBM Jake.

I have read that he and Heath were friends - both living in NY and he saw Heath as a kind of "mentor" - not sure where I have read it, could be on a Heath site.
He has cancelled some events, he needs some time but I am sure he will be back for filming "Looper" in January. If this film is a half as good as the script it will be great.

Even though I'm a fan and follower of Jake's, I'm equally or even more a fan of Anne Hathaway. That's why I'm disappointed that the buzz for her performance in LAOD lessened in the last few weeks. I also feel that some critics and many posters on different blogs don't like her. I wonder why? I think she's one of the genuinely nicest celebs out there and so underrated as an actress. Definitely overlooked for her performance in BBM, MW was not better than her. I feel many seem to be picking on her for no reason. It's annoying. NOT talking about WFT 2, mind you.
