Out In the Cold

The enduring stigma of homosexuality in Hollywood
By Matthew Hays
December 15, 2005

When Ang Lee’s latest film, Brokeback Mountain, did the festival circuit in the fall, it was greeted with warm critical and audience responses, won the top prize at Venice and was declared a cinematic breakthrough. The film — which opens Dec. 16 — involves two cowboys, played by rising stars Jake Gyllenhaal and Heath Ledger, who meet and fall in love in the 1960s. Despite their passionate romance, one that continues clandestinely over decades, they are never able to live together as a gay couple might do today. The social taboo surrounding homosexuality, the film tells us, is all that stands between them and their honest and innocent pursuit of happiness.

Brokeback Mountain is a testimony to the huge advances gays have made in terms of their representation on the big screen. It is a beautifully shot, studio-backed film featuring two bankable stars, directed by an Oscar-winning director, with a same-sex romance as its central focus. But these changes have not come easily.

In 1981, New York film critic Vito Russo penned the first edition of The Celluloid Closet, a diatribe in which he argued that the powers-that-be in Tinseltown had long supported anti-gay attitudes by infusing American movies with injurious stereotypes about the lives of gays and lesbians. Gays were too often sidekicks and the brunt of bad jokes, Russo argued, chastising closeted Hollywood gays for not pushing the issue further. Most striking was the book’s concluding section, "Necrology," in which Russo tallied a list of movies in which gay and lesbian characters met their untimely ends via suicide, mutilation, skewering or gunfire.

"Hollywood is too busy making old formulas hit the jackpot again to see the future," Russo stated in his final sentences of the book. "Hollywood is yesterday, forever catching up tomorrow with what’s happening today. This will change only when it becomes financially profitable, and reality will never be profitable until society overcomes its fear and hatred of difference and begins to see that we’re all in this together."

Many of Russo’s dreams have been realized since his death in 1990. With a general demystification of homosexuality in Western culture has come a shift in Hollywood casting calls. Now, heterosexual actors are no longer afraid to take on gay roles for fear of being identified as gay themselves. This has brought major star power to gay characters and issues that affect them. In Philadelphia (1994), Tom Hanks played a corporate banker who loses his job when his employers learn he has AIDS. He won an Oscar for his role, seen as doubly courageous given the character’s sexual orientation and illness. In 2003, Charlize Theron won the Oscar courage sweepstakes for her role in Monster, portraying a homely, serial-killing lesbian prostitute. It seems a fait accompli that Philip Seymour Hoffman will get an Oscar nomination for his portrayal of gay scribe Truman Capote. On television, meanwhile, Eric McCormack has won an Emmy for his ongoing role in the long-running sitcom Will & Grace.

These roles, considered breakthroughs in their own way, have something in common: the characters are all played by heterosexual actors. All of these portrayals have been accompanied by media fanfare and publicity. In interviews, the actors were always careful to emphasize that they are heterosexual. Indeed, it could be argued that their ability to muster widespread audience sympathy and empathy seems to be predicated on the fact that they’re only playing gay. Despite this so-called progress, when an actor plays a serial killer, they are never asked about their reluctance to take on the role. When an actor plays gay, the possible-reluctance question is obligatory.

If dramatic gay and lesbian representations have shifted radically in the past two decades, the change for gay actors is starkly unmoved by comparison. Various thespians have come out, but the idea of a leading actor — male or female — being openly gay remains out of the question. A number of British actors have come forward, notably Sir Ian McKellen and Rupert Everett, and Nathan Lane and Harvey Fierstein have given a number of supporting-role performances in Hollywood features. Ellen DeGeneres and Rosie O’Donnell have famously come out, but are now thought of primarily as talk-show hosts.

But little has shifted for the A-list acting club since Rock Hudson succumbed to AIDS 20 years ago. The damage such widespread knowledge could do to an actor was reinforced in 2001, when Tom Cruise sued a French tabloid for $10 million US over a fallacious story about the actor’s affair with a French porn star. Cruise’s lawyer, Bert Fields, pointed out in his legal brief that the mere perception that Cruise might be gay — and he is not, Fields repeated — could seriously damage Cruise’s ability to command multi-million-dollar film roles. In fact, much of the damage, Fields inferred, had already been done. “It’s something that will be there forever,” he said. The tabloid printed a full retraction and an apology.

The issue of closeted actors is something San Francisco-based author and screenwriter Armistead Maupin has dealt with in his own work. The author of the hugely popular newspaper serial-cum-book series Tales of the City, Maupin is a hero within the gay community for championing sexual honesty above all else. In 1995, when filmmakers chose to make a feature-length documentary version of Russo’s book The Celluloid Closet, they hired Maupin to write the narration. When the film was released, however, Maupin distanced himself from the project, slighting the film’s narrator, Lily Tomlin, for not being more forthcoming about her lesbianism. (Tomlin has since come out of the closet.)

"If Vito could see this now," Maupin said at the time, "he’d be very upset. Having a closeted person involved with this project runs counter to everything Vito Russo stood for: openness and honesty, and an end to the celluloid closet he wrote about so passionately."

In speeches and articles, Maupin frequently refers to the massive successes of the gay and lesbian liberation movement, a phrase that now seems almost quaint. But for all the discussion of evolving attitudes, he acknowledges little has changed for a new generation of A-list actors.

"Unfortunately, that closet hasn’t really vanished at all," Maupin told me recently. "It’s simply more sophisticated than it was in the past. Rock Hudson could rely on the fact that the local press wouldn’t run with a story about him being seen with another man. Now, gay superstars are required to get married, have children or adopt them and be very discreet about that trainer who travels with them."

At a time when black actors fought for better roles, the point was often made that Hollywood is about green, not black and white. According to Maupin, the question for gay actors boils down to the same thing: economics.

"It’s about money and the continuing perception that actors will lose money for their agents if they come out. And that may be true, but it won’t change until there’s honesty. I have more admiration than ever for people like Ian McKellan and Rupert Everett, who’ve come forward, been honest and are still pursuing their careers."

That’s two British actors who’ve come out. Where’s the American leading man?

Maupin sighs. "You’re right: there isn’t one."

Look who's calling somebody a queen: Perez Hilton officially outs Wentworth Miller

Gossip queen Perez Hilton is now in the dubious business of outing others. Today he decided to say what a lot of people knew but had the courtesy to not make official statements about: Openly gay Canadian actor Luke MacFarlane "was most recently dating Prison Break star Wentworth Miller, who is not out publicly."

    Key words: Not. Out. Publicly.

You'd think a queen like Perez might have a clue about letting people come out when they feel the time is right, but no. At least he wrote an appropriate headline: "Completely Gratuitous."

Maybe some of that old-news pink dye on his hair has gone to his brain.

  2. Governor Crist of Flordia is engaged to a woman. He's been rumored to be gay.

Gay Rumors Dog Newly Engaged Crist

Things are no doubt sticky on Charlie Crist’s end.

The Floridian Governor and suspected homosexual celebrated this Fourth of July by getting engaged to his convenient girlfriend, New York socialite Carole Rome. The engagement comes as rumors swirl John McCain may select Crist as his running mate. Thus, the impending nuptials would provide great cover for all the distasteful gay debate surrounding the well-tanned politico. But, like so many rumors, this one simply won’t quit.

Unfortunately for Crist, homo-journo Andrew Sullivan used the loving arrangement to revive an old story about Crist frequenting a gay bar called The Green Iguana.

The rumors about Florida Gov. Charlie Crist and the Green Iguana just wouldn’t go away. The story goes that the Florida governor frequented the Green Iguana, a bar in Tampa, back in the early 1990s when he was just starting his political career. He was less careful back then, people say, and during his partying at the Green Iguana, he was openly gay.

When I got Rick Calderoni, the bar’s well-known owner, on the phone, I expected him to stonewall me about it. He didn’t. Calderoni, who is gay, confirmed that Crist came into his bar quite often and that the two of them became friends.

Getting to the point, I asked him if he knew Crist to be gay.

“Yes,” he answered bluntly. “I just wish he would come out and admit it. That would be a great thing if he did.”

Crist, obviously, denies he’s a homo. Even if the Governor is a straight man, we highly doubt McCain’s going to touch this mess with a twelve-foot pole. In other words, Crist’s dreams of the White House are just that - dreams.

  3. Michelle Williams' Heath remembrance

Michelle Williams is making a movie about Heath Ledger so their two-year-old daughter can see what her dad was really like.

The actress - who was left devastated when her former fiance was found dead in his apartment after an accidental drug overdose in January - wants the actor's friends and co-stars to share their stories on him so little Matilda can see her father through their eyes.

A source said: "This is incredibly important for Michelle to do. It makes Michelle's heart ache that Matilda was so young when Heath died and she's unlikely to retain any memories of her father. She wants to keep his spirit alive with something Matilda can treasure all her life."

In her first public statement in February about Heath's tragic death, Michelle expressed her grief but said Matilda was helping her cope. She said: "I am the mother of the most tender-hearted, high-spirited, beautiful little girl who is the spitting image of her father. All that I can cling to is his presence inside her that reveals itself every day."

Heath and Michelle met on the set of 'Brokeback Mountain' in 2004 and Matilda was born in October 2005. The couple split in September 2007.

Jake Gyllenhaal and Reese Witherspoon went out drinking on one of Jake’s breaks from filming his new movie Prince of Persia. Reese looks so embarassed and she hides her face. I wonder how many drinks it takes to drink Jake under the table. He looks like a fun drinking buddy.

  9. Great post today, Jackie. If Gov. Crist is gay, I hope he does come out. Please provide a link where he has been for anti-gay legislation. If he is, people will have to work with him for change. You can't deny some of the good things he's done for other issues tho. The environment is an important one for everyone, gay and straight. We know very well how imperfect politicians can be, but a lot of it is up to us to change, not just finger point and bitch passively about a situation.

Will American voters elect the first gay vice president in November?
    ...
I began looking into the matter about 16 months ago, when a tipster in Fort Lauderdale told me that a young Republican aide had boasted to him at a dinner party that he was having an affair with Crist, who was then Florida's attorney general.

The tipster, who is gay, said he came forward because he found it terribly hypocritical that Crist opposed gay marriage and adoption by gay couples. Not to mention the whole pesky "living a lie" thing. I agreed, and before long, I had found numerous sources who said that GOP insiders Jason Wetherington and Bruce Carlton Jordan had boasted to them about romances with Crist.

Gay marriage redux: Crist chimes in, more fundies attack

Despite having signed a petition in favor of a gay marriage ban during his gubernatorial campaign, Florida governor and "confirmed bachelor" Charlie Crist (R) won't be actively supporting the anti-gay marriage amendment.

"It's not an issue that moves me," Gov. Charlie Crist told reporters Thursday after sponsors of the initiative announced they had enough signatures to get it on the ballot.

Crist is listed as an endorser of the amendment on the Web site, www.florida4marriage.org, and while running for governor, he signed a petition in support of such a ban. But in February, he asked the GOP to stop donating money to the effort and, Thursday, he said he'd rather focus on raising teacher pay, reducing property taxes and combatting climate change. "I'm just a live and let live kind of guy," the governor said.

  12. Sorry for the double post, Jackie.

I come from Massachusetts, and we are the most liberal of liberal Democrats I think (and I consider myself one). LGBT rights, the environment and animal rights are just three of the causes I support. I do realize that our government is a two-party system, and we have to work with Republicans. Believe me, a staunch, Conservative, right-wing Republican would never have voted for billions of state dollars to go toward restoring the Everglades. Gov. Crist sounds like a moderate Republican, who can be worked with, and you have to work for change. He hasn't been entirely opposed to gay marriage and child adoption, he's changed his stance. Hopefully, he can be worked with. If he's behaving in a hypocritical manner than can hurt others, then by all means, he needs to be called out for it. It just seems unfair to write him off entirely, when he could become someone that can be open to change.

  20. James Corden explains his "kiss" with Daniel Radcliffe

In February I wrote about what appeared to be an ambush-snogging of poor Daniel Radcliffe at the What's On Stage Awards in London by actor James Corden (The History Boys). Daniel was just stepping up the podium when James grabbed Daniel and gave him one heck of a kiss. At the time I wrote about how if I were Radcliffe, I would've kneed Corden in the crotch.

Well, I ran into Corden at the Television Critics Association in Los Angeles where he is promoting his new show on BBC America, Gavin & Stacey. I got a chance to ask him about the infamous kiss and why he did it. Says Corden, "If you spent enough time with Dan, you can’t help but kiss him on the mouth. It’s a fact. There’s something magical about him, which is I imagine why he got the part [of Harry Potter], where he just draws you in. There were no tongues involved in that kiss. But, we both enjoyed it very much."

Did Daniel know Corden planned on kissing him? "No," says Corden. "I’ve known Dan a while and I came up to him in the wings [of the show] and he said, 'You’re not going to make fun of me or anything, are you?' I said, 'No. I might kiss you on the mouth.' And then he had to go on, so I had given him some pre-warning, yes."

As to how good a kisser Radcliffe turned out be, Corden has nothing but praise. "A wonderful, wonderful kisser, with a beautiful penis."

It turns out the straight Corden is quite in touch with his gay side as an actor. He played Daffyd "The only gay in the village" Thomas' gay brothe on Little Britain. He guested on Rob Brydon's Annually Retentive where he had a scripted snog with out actor Russell Tovey (both actors also appeared in the gay-friendly film The History Boys).

Looks like he's not campaigning against gay marriage, but not supporting it either. Very few politicians speak directly and clearly abaout where they stand on the issue of same sex right to marry, they all waffle on it to some degree. And not all Democrats are for gay marriage either. So I don't think this puts Gov. Crist in bigot territory, at least not yet. A politician's private life is up to him, unless he is hypocrtically saying one thing publicly, and actively involved in making legislation that can deny rights to others.

    Charlie Crist Isn't Gay, Okay?

Florida's bachelor Governor Charlie Crist is getting married, and to a woman, too. That's how badly he wants to be vice president. I hope John McCain is happy now.

I hope Crist isn't making a mistake by trying too hard. Men don't want anything they can get too easy. On the other hand, men lose interest quickly.

Of course, the human heart is curved like a road through the mountains, so what do I know? Maybe it's love. And maybe it's just a joyous coincidence that Crist has found it at exactly the same time that McCain is looking for a running mate. Sometimes things just work out.

It's like that federal ban on off shore drilling. When Crist ran for governor in 2006, he supported it. Now John McCain wants it repealed and (weird!) two weeks ago, Crist realized that he did too.

Florida is a swing state -- Haha! Get it? -- and Crist has a popularity rating of something like 70%. He also gets a lot of the credit for delivering the state to McCain in the primaries. There's only one nagging thing keeping him from being the obvious choice for the vice presidency: He comes off kinda gay.

But then, suddenly last Thursday, after thirty years of the single life, Crist discovered that he couldn't live without a woman named Carole Rome, a divorced mother of two. It sounds improbable to me, but then so did the Sex and the City movie. If those nice monsters can find love, why not?

Maybe it's not all politics of the most ghastly, obvious, self-hating, the fix-is-in, trick-the-rubes kind. Maybe I'm too cynical. Maybe love is real and coincidence is an illusion. Luck -- who said that? -- is believing that you're lucky.

Maybe what we're smelling is the powerful odor of synchronicity.

    --
Here's the part that Tennessee Williams would have really liked: Gov. Crist's intended, Carole Rome, inherited - and runs -- one of America's oldest Halloween costume companies. The woman marrying the gayish governor from the sultry southern state actually makes beards.

Yes, people who run our country are held to a higher standard, but still are entitled by law to privacy and to a personal life, just like the rest of us, so I will say again, the way someone chooses to live their personal life, as long as they are not hurting anyone, is entirely up to them. You still have to prove they are liars and have bad character. If they lie to themselves, that doesn't hurt anyone but them.

London life doesn’t seem to be agreeing with Reese Witherspoon, who yesterday fled her home and checked into a hotel. The Hollywood star moved out of the rented Notting Hill pad she’s been sharing with beau Jake Gyllenhaal and into a suite at a London hotel.

“She loved the surrounding area but didn’t like feeling so exposed,” a source tells theBuzz. “She wanted to feel more secure, so she decided to take the kids to a hotel for a couple of days.
    ...
But as well as feeling unhappy in the house, Oscar-winner Witherspoon, 32, was also said to be upset by the number of paparazzi outside the property.

First of all how can a women put her kids in a situation like this. She knows exactly what she is doing. Hopefully her a$$ will head back to the safety of Brentwood and the gates. I am sure the citizens of London will be crushed. Maybe reese thought she may be the next Peoples Princess. I say dont let the door hit you in the ass on the way out.

  105. Ubisoft "Not Involved" with Prince of Persia Movie

Hope you guys haven't already bought your tickets for the Prince of Persia movie: Ubisoft says they have no involvement in the film.

Isn't that essentially why so many past game-to-movie iterations have sucked? Because no one who owns the rights steps in and says "yo, this is bull$#!%, cut it out right now"? But as it happens, all hope may not be lost...

"The new Prince of Persia film is a collaboration between [Prince of Persia creator] Jordan Mechner and Disney," said an Ubisoft spokesperson. "Ubisoft has no involvement."

Oh, well, if the creator is involved, I guess that's different. I would have thought him a part of Ubisoft, but hey, we won't split hairs, so long as he keeps the ship sailing straight and true.

In addition, Ubisoft's recently-acquired Hybride Technology, known for the special effects work in 300 and Spy Kids, won't have anything to do with it, either, as they'll be too busy helping Ubisoft try to blur the line between games and movies.

  107. Maggie Gyllenhaal Hates Fiancé's Love Scenes

Maggie Gyllenhaal is cool with onscreen nudity – so long as she's the one in the buff and not her actor-fiancé, Peter Sarsgaard.

"I hate it when Peter does a love scene," the actress, 30, admits in the August issue of Britain's Tatler. "He's very understanding – it doesn't seem to bother him [when I do one]." She'd like to keep it that way. "I'd hate it [if he was doing it]," she says. "I'd put up with it, I'd understand, but I wouldn't like it."

Gyllenhaal's breakout role was in the raunchy black comedy Secretary, in which she acted out a full frontal nude scene, something she won't necessarily be making a habit of. "After Secretary, people knew that I'd get naked, but I won't get naked for anything – only if it makes sense," she says.

Obviously happy in her own skin, the actress went on to act out steamy love scenes in Sherrybaby and even posed up for the British-based lingerie designer, Agent Provocateur, just six months after giving birth to her and Sarsgaard's daughter Ramona, born October 2006.

    Loves Role as Mom
And the actress, soon to be seen as Batman's love interest in the much-anticipated The Dark Knight, couldn't be happier in her real-life role as Ramona's mom.

"Motherhood is incredible," gushes the actress. "It's brought me to my knees in an incredible way - it's so humbling."

And are the engaged, Brooklyn-based couple, soon to be walking down the aisle? "At some point in the next 20," she responds casually.

  109. Kilmer: 'Ledger legacy is complete thanks to great roles'

Val Kilmer is happy pal Heath Ledger got to show off his acting talents in challenging roles before his untimely death - because now he'll be considered one of the greats.

The Doors star discovered a soulmate in Ledger but always worried the "interesting and successful" roles he played never showed his true talents. But, thanks to Brokeback Mountain and the new Batman movie, The Dark Knight, the late Aussie's legacy will be spot on.

Kilmer tells WENN, "I've known him for a number of years and there was a gravity to him that came up. "It's tough, but when I think about him, in terms of the tragedy of his life ending, I'm happy that he got to do a couple of roles that matched what he was capable of because he always seemed to me an actor doing interesting and successful work, but he was better than some of those roles."

Former Batman Kilmer and the new Joker Ledger met up a month before the latter died from an accidental drug overdose in January and Kilmer still has fond memories of their last meeting. He recalls, "He was very proud of having quit drinking. We were in a nasty smoke-filled club and I was drinking water and Heath's like, 'Hey, you're drinking water,' and I'm like, 'Yeah, you're drinking water too,' and he was excited about drinking water.

"He said he hadn't had a drink in about a year."

  135. Personally, I don't care who Gov. Crist sleeps with. I judge a politician, regardless of party, on their overall record, and his is very good - for the environment, increasing spending for children's education and the raising of teacher's salaries, committment to climate change, emissions controls, prescription drug tracking for assurance of safety and proper health care, less expensive homeowners insurance, among other things. Perhaps he can be persuaded to support issues such as same sex adoption and same sex right to marry; he is not actively against same sex right to marry.

Did he change his stance on offshore drilling? Yes, but don't blame your politicians, people - wake up and smell the crude oil and be realistic. To satisfy America's unceasing demand for oil, it's got to come from somewhere, and you've got to make a compromise somewhere - it either has to come from overseas, sending American $$$ overseas - or we've got to drill for it here - either bulldozing through tundras of pristine wilderness in the arctic, or offshore. None of it is desirable, but look in the mirror before blaming politicians - until Americans can decrease their usage, get more fuel efficient automobiles, or change to alternative fuel sources, it's got to come from somewhere. He's trying to make the best compromise in a bad situation. At least with Gov. Crist's plan, royalties from oil pumped from state land will go to the Florida state budget, reducing the need to raise taxes and/or increasing services to the state, and keeping American $$$ in this country. So we shouldn't throw the baby out with the bath water just because of who someone is sleeping with.

“The new Prince of Persia film is a collaboration between [Prince of Persia creator] Jordan Mechner and Disney,” it said. “Ubisoft has no involvement.”

This also means that the recent acquisition of Hybride Technology by Ubisoft is completely unrelated to the Prince of Persia movie, some of us had hoped that the effects studio behind 300 would soon be coming aboard the project - though this latest news does put down these rumors, a further comment is encouraging:

Little Levi will prolly grow up to be an accountant or some other uptight, pencil-pushing nine-to-fiver, just to piss off his hippie dad. Kids love rules, so we hear, and we doubt daddy Matty’s got it in him to be a hard-nosed father figure who can discipline at will. Maybe he can call over uncle Jake Gyllenhaal to lay down the law when sonny boy destroys all of pop’s surfboards?

It can be painful and dangerous if you are clumsy like me. lol

  161. George Clooney's ex Sarah Larson speaks about life after George

Actor George Clooney certainly knows how to stay on good terms with his exes, if a new interview with Sarah Larson is anything to go by. Clooney split with the former cocktail waitress in May after a year together. But if anyone expected her to be bitter about losing her grip on Hollywood's most eligible bachelor, think again.

"George is a great guy, a wonderful person. I don't regret spending time with him and he's a great person to get to know. "We still remain friends and have kept in touch. In fact, we spoke over the phone a couple of days ago. He's fun to be around, down to earth, laid back, funny and smart," she gushed to Hello! magazine.

And the Ocean's Eleven star is apparently a man of hidden talents. "Most people know George has a great sense of humour and is an adept storyteller, but I will always miss his extraordinary dance moves," Larson said. The 29-year-old met Clooney while waitressing in a Las Vegas cocktail bar. Thanks to their relationship, however, she is now moving on to bigger and better things.

"I have a lot of great opportunities, doors that have opened, and I have no complaints. "I make good money. I have a house. I have all the things I've always wanted. I'm in a good place," she said. "I've had some amazing offers come in, including one modelling campaign that may bring me to England soon.

"I can't talk about it yet because it's not a done deal. I hope it happens because I've never been to England and I'd love to spend some time there. "If I do end up there I could find a nice British boy. I'd be open to the idea. I hear they have a good sense of humour." The full interview is in this week's Hello! magazine.

I suspect that a very large proportion of men have some sexual attraction to men. Maybe 30%, maybe 60%.

I wonder about this too; and I think it's very natural.
It's only Western society and religions that stifles it. Lots of cultures recognized it, tolerated and/or and encouraged it in their cultures - feudal Japan (the beautiful way for samurai), Native American (two spirit people). This always sounds beautiful to me. :)

The bolded part made me laugh.
    You are so so wrong!
All patriarchal and traditional societies in Eastern Europe, Africa, Eastern Asia etc. are profound homophobes. Their churches are build on homophobia and mysogyny.

Western European society (and by extension, American and Australian)are the most tolerant regarding sexual orietation.

  164. Religion and homosexuality

Though the relationship between homosexuality and religion can vary greatly across time and place, within and between different religions and sects, and regarding different forms of homosexuality and bisexuality, current authoritative bodies and doctrines of the world's largest religions generally view homosexuality negatively. This can range from quietly discouraging homosexual activity, to explicitly forbidding same-sex sexual practices among adherents and actively opposing social acceptance of homosexuality. Some teach that homosexual orientation itself is sinful[1], while others assert that only the sexual act is a sin. Some claim that homosexuality can be overcome through religious faith and practice. On the other hand, voices exist within many of these religions that view homosexuality more positively, and liberal religious denominations may bless same-sex marriages. Some view same-sex love and sexuality as sacred, and a mythology of same-sex love can be found around the world.

Don't get it at all. I really dont see a lot that Ted says that is giving it good to Jake. What am I missing?

Truth, Lies and Ted - July 10

    ReplyDelete
  167. You are not missing anything, it was word for word what he mentioned in his column a few weeks ago about hiring a female assistant, calling him sexist.

He only adds that he has a lot that he like to keep to himself and men gossip more than women, which is BS, both gossip equally IMO.

And did i miss something, I though all of his PA's are/were women? Most of the PA's inHW are women so a man showing up for an interview would be rare. The sighting of Jake flying to the UK mentioned a female PA, bet it was the same blonde.

Ted was hoping for traction with this rumor and yes he says it's a rumor to cover, hoping it would be picked up elsewhere, but yet again it didn't, he tries though, it worked with Ben and Jennifer, he misses the attention he used to get.

Yes, it was picked up elsewhere.

  169. The sighting of Jake flying to the UK mentioned a female PA, bet it was the same blonde.

Did they actually say the woman is his PA? I remember reading someone saying that the woman is his therapist.

    ReplyDelete
  170. That UK guy from the plane isn't a die hard fan, he doesn't know Jake's people.

It could have been Jake's blonde manager.

    ReplyDelete
  171. And did i miss something, I though all of his PA's are/were women?

Matthew Katz-Frost - former Jake PA/confidante/suspected Ted source for Toothy Tile and Austin's friend.

    ReplyDelete
  172. Posted on OMG Feb 6, 2008:

btw Matt Frost was a crew member on Donnie Darko and Jake's asst in Moonlight mile.
    ---
Some people think that Matt is one of Ted's prime Toothy sources.
    ---
Matthew Katz-Frost was Jake's P.A. on at least three films...in addition to the two mentioned above, he was also listed in the credits for TDAT as P.A.

    ReplyDelete
  173. 7:36AM: Where was it picked up? I'm talking about a mainstream pick up not a blog like queerty or some obscure blog that quickly died, that's what Ted craves, like his Ben and Jennifer story, which was squashed, true or not.

7:45: Where did you here that it was his therapist since the person that described the encounter probably doesn't know what his people look like.

Frost="suspected" we haven't seen Matthew publically with Jake for over 2 years after seeing pap pics of them going back to '02 - '06 in both business and personal situations. That's a along time to start looking for replacements.

I always thought that the brunette was the replacement, started seeing her with him in early '07.

Frost looks like he severed ties with Jake, he was hanging around hoping to get involved with Jake's production Co. Nine Stories, but Jake doesn't talk about that anymore and if he does, Katz would not be a part of it.

Katz was still hanging around with Kiki, there were pics of them last year and of him and Austin early this year. They were all a part of a group of people I hear that Jake used to hang with but no longer.

If Katz was the source then he really is an asshole. He and Jake became friends during DD where Katz was a production assistant, they were even roomates in LA before he moved in with Kiki in 2002, let him sublet the palce in LA and Katz used that place in LA when he visited since he really lives in NY, Katz then subleted the place to other friends, Jake also introduced him to some people in HW, what a jerk if true.

Would explain why Ted's "sources" died and he was forced to make up shit or use "info" from fans sending him BS. I wonder what Jake did to him for him to do soemthing like that if true? I'm sure Ted wasn't paying him. How many stories were BS being fed to Ted if he was the source and if so why?

I noticed that onKatz's site, his Bio doesn't mention any Jake connection, I thought he worked as a production assistant on a few of Jake's films like DD and I thought TDAT, he even did a short film on it, and yet I don't remember seeing it on his site/resume.

No wonder Jake looks like he has kicked is HW "friends" to the curb.

Katz was born in the UK and was raised in France, nuff said.

    Trolly,

do try to keep you knickers on.
    LOL

    ReplyDelete
  175. The Good Girl and Proof were the other two I think, and again I don't expect to have him list him being a PA on his site, but he was part of the DD crew and he made that short film with TDAT actors that was shown in the IFC channel, unless I missed it I didn't see it.

Looking at his pictures he took of celebrties, I noticed Austin and Kik in the mix but no Jake, find it hard to believe he NEVER took any pictures of Jake for all the years he was with him yup, cut out completely.

    ReplyDelete
  176. ... he made that short film with TDAT actors that was shown in the IFC channel

It's somewhere on the Net, I saw it long time ago.

    ReplyDelete
  177. 6:40 - I was speaking in a historical context, and the difference view of West and East. Christianity is a major force behind intolerance, and when they brought their religions to the New World and the Middle and Far East, they actively condemned homosexuality and took steps to discourage what was in some cultures accepted and respected. I'm not talking today, or just simply tolerance.

    ReplyDelete
  178. Why, do you find it LOL?? Because it's true? Why would Katz completely ignore any association with Jake? I think that would be a plus to mention that he was a production assisitant on a cult film like DD or that the IFC Channel aired one of his short films, along with the music video credits he listed and his photographs. Is he ashamed? Was it not a big deal to him? He was with him and that group fora long time, it looks like there was a falling out.

Katz is a little piggy if speculation is true and karma is a bitch, what a nasty bunch of "friends" no wonder Jake has severed ties.

    ReplyDelete
  179. 8:35 AM

    True?
You do NOT KNOW what happened. You are just gossiping and speculating like the rest of us.

    ReplyDelete
  180. Is Matthew Katz-Frost gay?

    ReplyDelete
  181. Send Frost an e-mail and ask if he is gay, i'm sure he has one on his site the little piggy.

    ReplyDelete
  182. Good idea 8:51 AM, I'll do that.

    ReplyDelete
  183. According to Frost's imdb page he was Jake's PA o TDAT, MM, BB and was a set prodction assistant on DD and he also did that short for IFC with TDAT actors, so if it's listed there and not on his resume onhis site than that is suspicious.
