  1. Maybe Heidi Fleiss'll Hire Him

Sad ol' Pickled Fickle once made a living letting older dudes have his way with him—it's a common story in the rise of many Hollywood stars. But how weird is it, now that P.F.'s looks are waning, he's actually thinking of returning to his old profession? Uh, on crack much?

    One Rent-a-Wreck Blind Vice

Oh, this is a cruel town, and I can be an equally snitty columnist, sorry. You try growing up a fruit in Texas and get back to me. Until then, let’s dish up Pickled Fickle, shall we? See, Mr. F’s not in a great way these days. Career ain’t what it used to be, and his bedroom notches certainly aren’t what they used to tally up to, either. And take it from moi, all this mattress and life sadness has nothin’ to do with P.F.’s split with his honey recently. Ol’ P-man was certainly stepping out on his lady long before their recent bust up, I assure you. But like a lot of closeted stars in this town, P.F.got used to having it his way—meaning the gal and all the guys he wanted. Until...gravity and genes set in. And I’m not only talkin’ getting old here, hons, I’m talking the whole he-bang, as in the ever-awful three W’s: weight, wrinkles and wondering (as in what went wrong).

P.F.’s got those so big time right now—in fact, he’s very nearly delirious with the three W’s. He actually said to a pal whose shoulder he was crying on not long ago, “Maybe I should just go back to hooking.” Oh, darlin’. I dare say you’re in the category now where you have to dole out the green, babycakes. You been smokin’ somethin’ you picked up below the border? Damn, Sweets. Look in the friggin’ mirror.

  3. Maggie Gyllenhaal's Racy Ad Campaign Makes Little Brother Jake Uncomfortable

Yet another actress is sounding off on how urgently they needed to slim down after giving birth, and unlike sourpuss Jessica Alba or wine-guzzling Gwyneth Paltrow, this is a chick we actually like. Beginning the rounds of press for her role as Katie Holmes’ Replacement in the highly anticipated, potentially Oscar-adorned Dark Knight, Maggie Gyllenhaal tells USA Today how she speedily dropped all her baby weight before stripping down for some racy Agent Provocateur lingerie ads:

“’I found myself, six months after having a baby, in my underwear, getting my picture taken.’ She says she was ‘a good 20 pounds heavier’ after Ramona's birth in 2006 — and the lingerie helped her feel sexy again...’It made me feel so good.’”

Though Maggie admittedly looks hotter than she ever has in the photos (a closer look below), her manly bareback rider brother Jake didn’t “feel so good” after seeing the 12-foot version at an airport recently...

As Us says, "She didn't realize 'how scrutinized' she'd be for showing so much skin. 'My brother called me and said, "I'm in Heathrow, and there's a 12-foot picture of you upside down in a negligee." People are really rough on you when you do things like that.'" Not only is this admission understandable, it's also very media savvy. After all, can you imagine how much shit we all would've given Jake if he admitted that his big sis looked "hot" in lingerie?

  4. Gyllenhaal reveals ‘Dark Knight’ pain

Maggie Gyllenhaal has admitted that watching Heath Ledger's Dark Knight scenes will be "painful". The actress, who plays Rachel Dawes in the Batman sequel, explained that she was deeply affected by Ledger's death and believes that seeing the movie will bring it all back.

"My heart really broke when he died," Gyllenhaal told Marie Claire. "I think seeing the movie will be painful. I saw this new trailer, which I loved, but Heath was all over it, and it was very sad to see it. Hard to watch."

Maggie is engaged to actor Peter Sarsgaard, with whom she has a one-year-old daughter, Ramona. She added that her family was harassed by journalists as the news of Ledger's death broke.

"It was disgusting," she said. "I had journalists call me on my cell phone. There were these two shy girls sent from some rag magazine to camp in front of my house. I came home with Ramona and I was so shocked and angry."

  5. I think PoP is going to be a big chessy campfest. The film that Jake is using to try and get away from the gay community will probably only make him more popular in it.

  6. Oh poor Maggie, I'm sure she was heartbroken just like her brother. Does anyone believe this stuff???

  7. Why not? I was heartbroken and I never met Heath.

  10. IDK if Heath's death hit Maggie really that hard, but she generally comes off as disingenuous, I think it's partly because of her very annoying voice.

  11. Why not? I was heartbroken and I never met Heath.

Me too. :( But reading stuff like this after the complete six months silence and watching that video where Maggie talks about Heath and where she seems disingenuous, at least to me, I find it very hard to believe her. She didn’t say how she was her heartbroken when he was trashed by everyone but when he she promotes her movie and Heath is praised to heavens for his performance she opens up about her “pain”. I’m sorry but that sounds insincere imo.

  18. In all the BBM related forums it's so noticeable that Brokies still think that Jake and Heath were so close and Jake must have been too devastated to talk. I'm not gonna trash any of the boys, but J & H were so different, had different interests and friends. Heath's close friends are the guys he grew up with in Australia and in the last couple of years he hung out with the guys from his production company. Jake has his old friends, like Chris. He hung out with McBongo and Lance Armstrong and seems to be good friends with RDJ. One lived in L.A. the other in N.Y. They were close at one point that's why Heath and Michelle chose him to be the godfather, but they continued to live their seperate lifes.
Jake didn't say anything because his family and he perceived what was going on with Heath after his death as "circus" and he didn't want to take part in this. Whether he should have said something to "defend Heath's honor" is debateable. He'll talk about him, like stated many times before, when his press tour or his new movie begins.
Of course he was sad about Heath's passing, but you can't compare his sadness to Heath's family and really close friends.

Why not? Grief is grief. He should acknowledge it to honor Heath, not defend Heath's honor. Big difference. Of course it's difficult for him, but to put it in perspective, what's more important, that or honoring someone who has gone from him forever? There's no getting it back, and he may regret not having done so.

  25. "Meet Dave" continues Eddie Murphy's rocky relationship with gay audiences

A new "family comedy" from Eddie Murphy called Meet Dave opens today, and there appears to be some gay content in it. Unfortunately. In the film, an alien spaceship (in the form of Eddie) lands on Earth, controlled by tiny people inside who try to learn more about our world. According to this review:

"As the Captain attempts to familiarize himself with human culture, Meet Dave dabbles in racial and sexual stereotyping. When a headset pipes rap music into Dave, the miniature white aliens can't stand it. But a miniature black alien starts grooving to it. When Dave accidentally walks into a stage production of A Chorus Line, it turns the no-nonsense alien security officer (Pat Kilbane) into a lisping gay hairdresser."

Oh jeez, and this is supposed to be a PG rated "family comedy"? Well, I guess nothing brings a family closer together than laughing at mincing gay stereotypes, right? (and btw...A Chorus Line turned him gay? What would have happened if he had seen Xanadu?) Of course, I wasn't going to see Meet Dave anyway, because it looks just terrible. But in all honesty, I've only seen a handful of Eddie Murphy movies.

The last one I saw was the infamous Razzie favorite Norbit, because I was ... curious. This was the film that supposedly lost Eddie the Oscar for Dreamgirls (the ads came out at the same time Oscar voting was going on, and rumour has it that Academy members took one look at the ads and cast their votes elsewhere). So i watched Norbit, and was not disappointed, as it was mesmerizingly awful.

But my Eddie movie-watching experiences are few and far between, and it's not only because his films generally stink.

I remember the first (and only) time I saw any of his stand-up act. I was twelve years old, and just coming to terms with my sexuality. I was at a birthday party for a friend, and someone put a copy of Eddie Murphy: Delirious in the VCR. the first lines out Eddie's mouth were:

"I've got some rules while I'm doing stand-up. Faggots aren't allowed to look at my ass while I'm on stage. that's why i keep moving while I'm up here, because you don't know where the faggot section is"

Well, a roar went up from the audience, and from the kids at the birthday party, while I sat there growing red-faced, and as he continued talking about "faggots", I found myself becoming light-headed, and eventually I managed to excuse myself, and spent most of the next hour in the bathroom trying to tune everything out.

That was about it for me and Eddie Murphy. I've heard that he later apologized for the things he said in this concert and in the concert film Raw, but I don't recall hearing it. I remember him giving either Oprah or Barbara Walters the excuse, "Well, I was young", but that's about it.

I'm curious to hear your opinions. If an entertainer spent his early years mired in homophobia, would you be able to look past it later in his career, even if he apologized?

  27. Another theorie, maybe Jake is ashamed to be connected with Heath?
Jake is very respected in the industry, also because of his family and is currently togethr with the highest paid actress in Hollywood. Maybe he wants to distance himself from the rumors surrounding Heath? With all due respect to Heath, but he didn't play in the same league as Jake before he died. This probably would have changed after DK, but no one treated him as very important in Hollywood, whereas Jake was/is. Maybe he doesn't want his clean image destroyed by association?

    ReplyDelete
  28. I just don't see how it would destroy an image, most people would see it for what it is - paying respect to a friend and colleague. To me, it actually makes him look worse in the public eye for not doing this. I just cannot believe he'd be so shallow that he'd put Reeke above Heath for money and status. :(

  31. It would depend on the situation - in the Shia LaBoeuf incident, he could say he was young because he's what, only 21 today? In that case, if it happened a "couple of years ago", that would make Shia still a teenager, and a minor, so that might be understandable. For Eddy Murphy, being "mired" in homophobia, being young I don't think is much of an excuse.

  33. Dancing With The Stars may feature gay couple

Openly gay former boy band icon Lance Bass could Tango his way into homosexual history becoming the first celebrity to dance his way up the Dancing with the Stars' ladder—with another man.

Although the US show Dancing with the Stars' season seven line-up has yet to be revealed, rumours are circulating that Bass, the former ‘N Sync member who came out of the closet two summers ago, could join the cast.

But Bass wouldn’t be the first ‘N Sync member to lace up his dancing shoes and Cha Cha his way into America’s hearts. Bass’ former boy band co-member Joey Fatone finished in second place on Dancing with the Stars' season four.

The show pairs celebrities with dancing professionals and the word is out that Bass, if he joins the cast, would be paired with a male dance pro, reported The New York Daily News. It would be the first time a same-sex couple danced together on that stage and Bass could be the one to cross that threshold and open the door to a male couple tearing up the dance floor together.

The show’s network ABC has yet to comment on the Bass boy on boy buzz.

Luke and Wentworth met in February 2007 and broke up in late winter, not fall. They were together about a year, and lived together for a few months.
    ---
They never lived together. They kept their separate apartments and spent most of their time together at Luke's. Wentworth had a very small flat in LA. He used to live in Dallas while filming Prison Break and would come back most weekends to LA to be with Luke. Yes they stayed together for nearly a year.
    ---
Their relationship was destroyed by a stupid woman who worked with his agent and who opened her big mouth to the paps agency. Perez Hilton, who had previous info about the couple was in heaven when the pics surfaced.

  42. Heath Ledger Never Saw 'The Dark Knight'

Heath Ledger never saw his final film before he died in January. The Dark Knight director Chris Nolan had screened the first trailer for the late actor, but he was still editing the upcoming blockbuster when Ledger died.

Nolan says, "He was already on another film. It was months and months since we'd wrapped. We had really cut a lot of the film together and watched the film a couple of times and were about halfway through the edit process. Unfortunately he'd only seen the prologue, the introduction to his character shot with these IMAX cameras and put out as a short film in IMAX for Christmas.

"We screened it for him and he enjoyed it very much. It gave him a taste of how it was going to come across but I was never able to show him his finished performance and that's very sad."

Ledger is already receiving rave reviews for his portrayal of The Joker, with many critics suggesting the Aussie is a clear front runner for an Oscar.

  56. Heath Ledger's final cut: An exclusive, on-set diary

The cult of the late Heath Ledger is set to grow with his astonishing performance in the new Batman film. Sean Porter was on set with the troubled Hollywood star for his last ever shoot. Here, he reveals what happened during those three manic – and spookily portentous – days

    Sunday, 13 July 2008

I'm breathless and Heath Ledger is downright furious. He rips off his frilly clown hat and hurls it to the floor. It's a minute past midnight and the cameramen are looking at their watches and mumbling stuff about "the union". The director Terry Gilliam is beside himself too, as he scrambles around the set of The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus to persuade his mutinous crew to agree to one more take; but it's too late – the permit to film ran out at midnight, and pieces of equipment are already being hastily stashed into their silver flight-boxes, ready for the next job.

In a final attempt to salvage the situation, Heath joins Terry in petitioning them: "C'mon guys... Please! Just one more take... Just one more. I mean, c'mon, what difference is another 10 minutes going make?" But it's all in vain as they continue packing.

As it will transpire, the scene that's just been shot – a vile mob giving chase to Heath Ledger through the winding backstreets of London's East End – will be the last he'll ever shoot. I was a member of that mob; and in roughly 72 hours, Ledger's dead body will be found by his personal masseur in his loft apartment in New York City.

Nearly six months after his death, as the PR machine for The Dark Knight swings into gear, the actor will unavoidably be in the spotlight again; there's also a suggestion that he'll be nominated, posthumously, for the Best Supporting Actor Oscar, for his role as the Joker in that film.

The first time I saw a publicity still from the Batman film, it was a disconcerting experience: a live man, looking like a dead man already. Heath Ledger as the Joker, with lax, yellow hair, caved-in face, and smudged, blood-red lipstick, bright and colourful and terrible, like a Japanese water-demon, or something from a Corman horror. This image, loaded with ghostly resonances, speaks solely of death; and this is what I find strange, because in those last three days I worked with Heath, I encountered a man who was so full of life.

This was my first job as an extra, and on the first day, before I'd even had the chance to sit down and quaff a quick coffee, we were given our call and escorted down to the set: a tatty and forgotten pub in the heart of Clerkenwell – The Ring O Bells. Terry Gilliam was dashing about, a hand on his battered, suede cowboy hat, to stop it flying of his head; in his wake, a small retinue of production minions struggling to keep up with him. The willowy and strangely beautiful Lily Cole was making her way across the set, and as if from nowhere, a tall, thin figure appeared and pranced and jigged his way towards us – it was Heath and he was dressed up like some daft and dishevelled Pierrot doll.

"Jesus! Heath, you look crazier than a clown's cock!" I offered. He creased up with laughter.

"And.... CUT," shouted a distant voice; then "Good... Good... We'll go again in five..."

"That's hilarious," said Heath. "Where'd you get it from?"

"A film called Kenny," I told him. "A mockumentary about this guy who's got a Portaloo business in Melbourne".

"Oh, Jeez... I know the one you're talking about, it's got what-his-name in it? Shane Jacobson – that's it! Shit, I really must get to see it..."

And with that, Gilliam beckoned him over to the monitors. It was soon apparent that Heath was utterly immersed in this role and in this whole project. After each scene had been shot, he'd be running off to watch it played back, regardless of whether he had starred in it or not. He was so active on set that if he wasn't wearing such an outlandish costume, it would have been impossible to distinguish him from the any of the production team's top brass.

All the talk on the set of was of his performance as the Joker. The buzz was that once it was released, Heath would to be seen in a whole new light – as a "proper" actor, a "brilliant" actor, possibly. He would be massive – absolutely massive; and after what I'd seen of his work ethic on that first day, absolutely wasted too. '

The following day, I happened to arrive at the unit base at the same time that Heath and his PA pulled up in some outrageous super-car a certain German manufacturer had loaned him while he was staying in London. The roar of the engine drowned out my quick "Hello", so I nodded casually and walked straight past, headed for the catering truck.

I popped back after lunch to have another look at the car. As I inspected it, I noticed Heath sat on the steps of his trailer, a black hoodie pulled tight over his head, skinny black jeans and a pair of sneakers, and sucking on a fag as usual. After a minute or so, he wandered over, his PA lurking behind him carrying his Starbucks bucket and Camel fags. "So what d'you think of the car, mate?" he asked.

"I'm not too sure, cars aren't really my thing, but I know what Freud would say..." I replied.

"It's ridiculous isn't it? Talk about a cock-extension... Ha! It's fun, but not really my style," said Ledger. But he seemed a bit uneasy and broke off the chat, saying something to his PA. They wandered back to his trailer together.

Back on set, Terry and Heath were soon having another of their private conversations. It was hard to tell who was directing who. I shimmied closer, only to overhear some scurrilous gossip about Tom Cruise. Heath eventually broke off and came over to ask if any of us had seen the new film about Joy Division – Anton Corbijn's Control: "Their music's amazing!"

On the final day of filming, Saturday 19 January, there were guns and explosions and violence on set. There were arguments, and a bad vibe descended on the pub. Heath himself no longer looked like a clown. He was dirty, wired and manic: he hadn't stopped for three days – kicking about the set whether or not he was due to shoot a scene. He'd be there when I arrived and after I'd gone. And I was doing a 10-hour shift. When he wasn't on set he was back in his hotel room reading or watching some of the Oscar-nominated movies that, as a member of the Academy, he'd be asked to vote on.

He'd been throwing himself around a lot, doing his own stunts, take after take – attempting to lob himself on to the "Imaginarium", a horse-drawn, travelling sideshow, decorated with a series of Gilliam's own hallucinogenic graphic confections – sometimes succeeding, sometimes failing.

It was common knowledge on set that he had a spinal injury and that he was on some hefty medication for it. Late in the day, with shooting behind schedule, Heath's back was playing up. He lay prostrate on the cobbles between the pub and the Imaginarium doing his Alexander Technique exercises, motionless, his eyes shut tight. As I walked past I nearly tripped over one of his elongated clown shoes.

"You all right, Heath?" I asked.

"Yeah. I will be in few minutes..."

"I thought you'd snuffed it there," I said, trying to raise a laugh. Heath just closed his eyes. Once he had recovered, the filming resumed; Ledger pursued by an angry, drunken mob, all baying for his blood. Incendiary devices were popping everywhere, fired from a blunderbuss by Verne Troyer, the 2'8" actor who played Mini Me in the Austin Powers films. And this is the last scene Heath Ledger ever shot; it reached midnight and the union curfew kicked in.

By the time Heath and Terry calmed down, the set had thinned out dramatically. Heath walked around, thanking and hugging people, then came over to us few extras who were still left and thanked us and began walking off. I walked after him to ask if he was going to stay and have a few drinks.

"Sorry, but I'm on the wagon... have been for about 17 months now," he said, mock-triumphantly

"Oh... nice one!" I replied, somewhat tongue-tied.

"Cheers, mate" he said before turning and sloping off despondently up the narrow lane back towards unit base and his warm trailer. "Bye Heath..."

The following Tuesday, at about 8pm, I received a text-message from my sister, who I'd been keeping in the loop regarding my adventures on Doctor Parnassus. In that dull and toneless medium, and in the truncated vernacular of text-speak, it read: "Wot sort of effect do u have on people? U no that actor u were workin with... they found him dead!"

It took a while to register, then I turned on the radio and, within seconds of finding a news station, her message was legitimised: "Heath Ledger... found dead... being treated as a possible suicide... slumped on the floor of his loft-apartment in New York..." I called a couple of other extras to find out if they knew what was going on. All they knew was what I knew: Heath was dead – the circumstances open to speculation. They all expressed a sense of shock and loss. Some wept.

As I sit here, looking at his picture, I still really don't know what to say about Heath Ledger. All I can add to what's already been said is my imperfect but valid little story: the story of a man whom I met, but whom I never really knew; the story of a man who I worked with for just three days but left one of those indefinable imprints that make you feel you've known someone a lot longer.

My image of Heath is of a man envisioning a life rather than a death; of an actor deeply committed to his art – perhaps to such a degree that it contributed to his undoing. But looking back at my time on set, I also see strange portents of his demise: there was even a moment when one of the extras, a devout Christian, began reading aloud from The Revelation of St John. And after our conversation about Joy Division, whenever I think of Heath, I'm reminded of the band's lead singer, Ian Curtis – another young man with immense energy stubbed out in his prime. Heath would have liked such a comparison, I think.

This wasn't how the movie was supposed to end; I was shocked, I still am; but then, what do I know? I was just an extra.

  57. Closeting is homophobic in the sense that heterosexuals have forced many people to live their lives living a lie. In todays world there is no excuse for any homosexual or bisexual person to live their lives in the closet.

This horrible way of living could surely become a thing of the past if actors like Jake Gyllenhaal and others led the way. It has become obvious that Jakes need for fame and wealth have prevented him from being a real man. Ted is correct. Jake doesnt have the cajones to come out of the closet.

    ReplyDelete
  58. I think the time for blaming straight people for gay peoples choice of staying in the closet should come to an end. Time for gay peole to step up. If gay men like Jake don't have the courage to live their lives openly and freely then shame on them. Don't look for others like him to change things. Change them yourselves.

    ReplyDelete
  59. There were rumors even before Heath's death that he suffered from back pain. That's probably why he was on pain killers.

  60. It's not straight people per se, but what the majority, mostly straight people and gay, are taught. We have to stop teaching people, whether through religion or upbringing, that people have to behave a certain way to be acceptable, or that only certain kinds of people are acceptable. It's no different than racism or any other of the many ways we have to debase people from what they rightly are. Children aren't born hating or discriminating, they have to be taught how. When I look at Ted's video, what I see is a man, don't need to label him in any other way.

    Hollywood 'resists gay US actors'

Sir Ian McKellen has said openly gay US actors are prevented from having successful Hollywood careers.

"It is very, very, very difficult for an American actor who wants a film career to be open about his sexuality," the gay British actor said. "And even more difficult for a woman if she's lesbian. It's very distressing to me that that should be the case."

The Lord of the Rings star added: "The film industry is very old fashioned in California." He was speaking at the Berlin Film Festival, where he received a lifetime achievement award.

    Leading men

Sir Ian, 66, said Oscar-nominated cowboy love story Brokeback Mountain may open the door to more films about homosexuality. But the film industry was still reluctant to cast an openly gay man in a leading role, he said. The same was not true on Broadway, where people were "very at ease with being open and honest".

If the picture clicked for millions of moviegoers, it was probably because Gyllenhaal allowed them to see Ledger's stiff, emotionally strangled Ennis del Mar through the eyes of the besotted Jack Twist. Whether you consider it a camp classic or a wrenching cry from the heart, Twist's anguished "I wish I knew how to quit you" became the film's signature line.

I always felt Ledger stole most of the critic's hearts and Gyllenhaal most of the audience's hearts.

  64. It was just so beautiful wasn't it, see Jack so besotted with Ennis, and that's exactly the word I'd use. It was beautiful. And Ennis equally as besotted, but can't show it. I smile when I watch the scene when he is practically jumping out of his skin, so anxiously awaiting Jack's arrival after four years, barely even aware of Alma and his daughter in the room, clicking his lighter and chain smoking, eye on the window. Just beautiful. I was expecting Heath to be brilliant, but Jake amazed me too. :)

I think Jake used that fanbase very well to either keep his name in the news or stroke his fragile ego. Jake has no need for that fanbase today and wishes they would go away. He wants no part of BBM fans or gay fans. It's a shame he has turned his back on gay people like himself.

Is it possible to be over 20 and be an actors fan JUST for his looks?

    ReplyDelete
  80. Not necessarily, 10:34. What would people have to be bitter about? Some fans will come and go, depending on the new flavor of the month, but others will remember a specific performance, such as Jack, and come back to see such talent again and again, like with Daniel Day-Lewis. I would think that like, with anything, you'd want people that come back, stay with the actor over the years, watch his career grow. That sounds desirable to me.

  81. I only wish that Heath could still be here, to see what other wonderful roles he had in store for us. I made a decision to follow all of the actors of Brokeback, Heath, Jake, Michelle and Anne, to see what other wonderful work they do.

  82. "Fangirls" and fans are two separate and distinct entities. Fangirls are the ones who live on internet communities and become a little too invested in the talent. Which inevitably leads to frustration and disappointment and creates a sense of bitterness over time.

Italian wins gay driving ban case

An Italian court has ordered the government to pay 100,000 euros (L79,919) to a man who had to retake his driving test because he was gay.

Danilo Giuffrida, now 26, told doctors he was homosexual during a medical examination for military service. The information was passed to the defence and transport ministries. Mr Giuffrida was told to repeat his driving test or have his licence suspended because of his "sexual identity disturbance". Mr Giuffrida passed his test for the second time but his licence was renewed for just one year rather than the usual 10 years because of his homosexuality.

A court in Catania, Sicily, ordered the ministries to pay damages on the basis that Mr Giuffrida's constitutional rights had been breached and that homosexuality could not be considered a "mental illness". The judge said the actions of the ministries showed "evident sexual discrimination".

Mr Giuffrida welcomed the sentence as "a step forwards for civil rights."

  89. THE DAY AFTER TOMORROW

    Jake Gyllenhaal Q&A

In Roland Emmerich's The Day After Tomorrow, Jake Gyllenhaal plays Sam Hall, son to Professor Jack Hall (Dennis Quaid), a climatologist who has been warning his colleagues that the planet is heading for meltdown caused by global warming. With Sam stranded in a New York facing a second Ice Age, his father faces a race against time to reach him.

Q: What made you want to do a blockbuster like The Day After Tomorrow?
A: I love big movies and I always have. I love watching them. I've never been a cineaste, preferring just small, independent films. I love big entertainment movies, so it wasn't really a hesitation on my part. It was just whether I would have enough to do - whether it would just be a movie about the weather or be a movie about human relationships with a character you want to watch. I read it and I thought it was awesome.

Q: Were you a fan of director Roland Emmerich's previous work?
A: I loved Independence Day, and that was a big part of me really wanting to do this movie. It has a great sense of humour - I found myself laughing at the secondary characters getting squashed, like the reporter who gets hit with an Angelina [Jolie] billboard.

Q: Do you think this film will have the same impact on your career as Titanic did for Leonardo DiCaprio? Are you worried that it will?
A: With a story like that [Titanic], their love story was the centre of the movie. But with this, the central relationship is father-and-son, and I don't think there's ever been a huge public response to a father-son love story, in the way there would be to a love story. But, no, I'm not worried about that.

    Q: So it's a family story, in a way?
A: Yeah. The problems within the family, with people not paying attention to each other, are the same thing we do to the environment, and I thought that was an interesting idea. I don't think it's completely in the film, but I approached it that way. I thought it was a beautiful metaphor. It's like if we could figure out the problems in our family, we could help the bigger picture.

Q: I heard that Dustin Hoffman, who you worked with on Moonlight Mile, advised you against taking the role…
A: Yeah! He was saying 'You don't how many offers you're going to get. Just wait it out and don't be impatient.' I said, 'Dustin - I really want to make this movie.' And I think he's been through movies that haven't been his cup-of-tea - he'd rather be the storm in the movie than the storm itself! And I totally respect that. But I grew with those movies. I go every summer to all of them. I'd be lying if I said I didn't want to do it. It's a lie to say it's a career-movie, or it's a lie to say the character was amazing - I just wanted to be in a movie like that.

Q: What was the hardest thing about filming?
A: Two weeks into the wave scene, when 700 extras were all pissing into the tank, that was when I said to myself 'This seems to be a lot less romantic than I thought!' But most of it was pretty cool. We came very close to all vomiting up paper snow - when we weren't using real snow, they used the stuffing inside a baby-diaper. Also, the scene when the water is rising in the public library, they were sinking that room into the water, which had been recycled from the 2 ½ weeks of us working with extras - and I was putting my head into it that day…the sacrifices I make!

Q: How environmentally aware were you when you were growing up?
A: I was always aware of it, and growing up - being the age I am - we were always taught to recycle and we always had to have the tin can recycling man telling us to recycle in elementary school, and teaching us what elements to put in the trash can and what to put in the recycling bin. So I think I was brought up pretty aware of the environment. We had Earth day at my school, and I was always pretty conscious of it, but I don't think I was ever really conscious of the ramifications of what I did would have on the environment, or more importantly what corporations in the world do, or have done. This film has made me much more aware of how dire it is now, because something like this could happen. Especially when a science fiction director decides to find science fiction in reality, something's wrong. It's a little scary.

    Q: Do you recycle?
A: I try to. I do recycle, and I try and plant trees to offset the carbon dioxide I put into that atmosphere. I spend $400 a year buying trees, to plant in a forest in Mozambique. They're mango and nut trees, so they're self-sustaining for the people that grow them - nuns that run this convent. I do that, which is not really that accurate in terms of helping things - because it would probably be better to buy a hybrid-car rather than plant trees, but I'm trying to do my bit.

Q: What do you think the film's underlying message is?
A: I think that there has always been a fascination with mythology and metaphor, and it seems like this is a metaphor for clearing things up and starting anew. I think it's more about that than the destruction of things - people are watching things they don't think could ever happen or that are so dream-like, and out of the ordinary and exist on another plane, it makes you feel a little extraordinary yourself.

Q: So it carries a positive message then?
A: I think this movie is really about hope, in a much more profound way than a lot of these big movies are. I feel like I can say that, because I don't do them that much. It's a movie where nobody saves the world, shoots a laser beam and destroys the enemy. It's about us destroying us. In the end, it's about hope, that not everything is destroyed, that we are the most resourceful creatures on earth and we will figure out a way to live. That is cool. And that's not Hollywood to me. If there's one criticism about Hollywood, it's that they don't make things real. I don't buy that. This is a movie about how we suffer the consequences; what happens to Manhattan in this movie is very hopeful.

Q: Do you like to use your fame as an actor to talk about politics?
A: It frustrates me when actors talk politics. I'm political and I make choices in my movies that I think are political. I try and say things with what I do. I think it's presumptuous to say a movie will make a difference. I think the intention with this movie is to have fun, but it also does things that are political - like America having to ask Mexico for help. The President of the United States begging everyone for help - I'm really into that! I don't think it will have people protesting like they did with The Passion - but it does raise issues. They're issues we all know about, and take for granted. Hopefully, it'll scare the shit out of some people.

Q: Are you as fearless in your own life as you are in the film?
A: I prefer doing it in the movies - it's much easier! The thing with this story, it's not people doing super-human things. That's why I like it. I didn't have to get in shape, work out or go on a special diet. I was playing a normal person put in extreme circumstances.

Q: On a more personal note, is it true your great-great grandfather spent his life collecting beetles in Sweden?
A: That's what I was told as a child and I'd be devastated if it wasn't true. It's true to me! But supposedly he was a collector and cataloguer of beetles. We're interesting people. He was knighted by the King of Sweden, and we have a coat of arms. The Gyllenhaal family has a coat of arms in Sweden!

Looks like ever since she started Reeke Inc., she got over that. She trots those kids out when it's convenient for her photo ops. I've been to the Tate Museum, there's never any paps hanging around. How did the paps manage to be in the museum the day Reese decided to take her kids? Same for the train station. Paps never hang around there. Reeke's PR must have given the paps a head up. Did these paps have a big S on their chests so they could fly through the air and be there in less than 1 minute?

  114. Deacon looks scared because he is being picked up by a bodyguard. This is not normal for him. They have never had a bodyguard with the kids ever. I have never seen the kids with a nanny and a parent ever until this Jake relationship.

Reese wanted to be an A-lister and live like an A-lister. Bodyguards and nanny's are the norm, 5-Star hotels, traveling, shopping etc. Ryan seems like he would be fine kicking around LA and he never has help near the kids.

It's funny to see who constantly is reminding the public how down-to-earth she is and how "JUST LIKE US" her life is when it totally isn't.

If the picture clicked for millions of moviegoers, it was probably because Gyllenhaal allowed them to see Ledger's stiff, emotionally strangled Ennis del Mar through the eyes of the besotted Jack Twist. Whether you consider it a camp classic or a wrenching cry from the heart, Twist's anguished "I wish I knew how to quit you" became the film's signature line."

I could not agree more. As a queer person, there is nothing about the Ennis character that I find even remotely appealing, and Heath played his character right from the pages of Annie Proulx's short story. He didn't deviate one bit.

Jake's character resonated with me completely because he played a post-Stonewall gay man tragically trapped in a backwards world. And Jake did this from his imagination. Annie Proulx said that she barely recognized Jake's Jack Twist. Jake did an absolutely brilliant job in the film; stunning from first to last. Jake, not the often touted Mr. Ledger, who refused to play Jack because Twist was too gay, took the most daring, courageous part in the most controversial film in a generation, and he deserved an Academy Award.

    Jenny Gestating?

Hear this one, kiddos? The new news on the Garner-Affleck fam status? Rumor is Jennifer's pregnant with a baby destined to be twice as adorable as Violet. Sweet news, if we still believed Jen and Ben had any luck of remaining Mr. and Mrs. for much longer. Think the preg mumblings are just a way to shoo away breakup rumors, or is Jenny expecting another offspring in hopes of making her marriage even stronger, ya know, the way kids always do?

Spawning for a second time seems to be the nail in the marital coffin for some celeb couples. A-Rod and Cynthia had their second child just last April, less than three months before the Madonna crap hit the fan. We doubt A.R. and his wife’s woes began in the last few weeks—this was a long time coming. Jayden James, unforch, was no saving grace for the marriage of Brit-Brit and K-Fed, and Ryan and Reese were enjoying holy perfect matrimony, or so they wanted us to think, until their divorce after having li'l Deacon. Bearing more babies doesn’t fix a crumbling relaysh, and having a second child just doubles your chances of saying goodbye for good, espesh if it's born into a family with bad vibes all around. All we’re sayin’ is, if you’re having a hard time with your hubbie or your wife, stay on the pill until it’s all figured out.

Complete bullshit. Diana Ossana (the writer) said that when she saw Monster's Ball she immediately wanted him to play Ennis.
    Get your facts straight!

  128. Annie Proulx gave Jake and Heath the BBM book she wrote for Jake she wrote "for Jake" for Heath she wrote "for Ennis" because she felt he became Ennis. Annie was very vocal about her disappointment that Heath didn't get the Oscar she felt he deserved.

  129. I don't get why Heath Ledger has to be trashed, go read all the reviews on rottentomatoes.com, if it wasn't for his performance the movie wouln't be what it is now. It was him who carried it from beginning to end, no matter what this stupid reviewer said, who gave the movie a bad review (go take a look on RT). Everyone was great, but Heath was outstanding.
I wish Heath was still alive, I think we'd see many other great performances.

  133. We have one reviewer who preferes Jake and suddenly everyone jumps on board and yells how overrated Ledger is. It seems the only times Ledger is liked is when some posters are pissed at Jake, then Heath is brought up and praised to heavens. Is it genuine? No! Not only here Heath is used to get back at Jake, I noticed it on other boards too.
I just find it sad that Heath's most memorable movie is BBM, whose fanbase instead of appreciating his work is using every critical word towards him to bash him.
That's why I think Heath shouldn't be talked about in a Jake centric board, he's brought up for all the wrong reasons and when there is a slight opportunity to put him down everyone jumps on board.

    REESE'S RULES OF ENGAGEMENT
Now that Reese (doing some name editing) & Jake are settling down together, there are a few things she wants to make clear before she'll let him take the next step and slip an engagement ring on her finger. Star has learned that right before he moved into her $5mil. LA home in June, R had a "briefing" session with Jake about the requirements of their relationship.

"R believes in wide-open communication, and she discussed at length with him what is best for her household," says one source. "Poor J, the things he has to put up with!"

And what are those things? "Some of them are run-of-the-mill," explains the source. "He has to take off his shoes when he's in the house; trash must be taken out when the can is 3/4 full, and no feet on the coffee table."

R, 32, is also a stickler for manners, and that includes no cursing or using slang. "J used to swear like a sailor, but not anymore," says the source. "If he does, he has to apologize."

And then there are other rules that may seem like a bit too much. For example, every night over dinner, the family, R, J and her 2 children, Ava, 8, and Deacon, 4--must talk about something great and something not-so-great that happened to them that day. "It's healthy, but every night?" asks the source. "It must be exhausing."

But it's not to Jake, 27. "He's so in love with Reese, he'll do whatever she wants," says an insider. "He's a bit of a pushover like that."

While Reese's ex-husband, Ryan Phillippe, balked at her headstrong ways, J actually finds them charming, according to the source. "He lets her have the say in everything--what they do for dinner, how they decorate the house and when they do yoga together."

It's been this way since the two first got together in March 2007. "Reese would tell Jake when & when not to come over," says the insider. "She called the shots."

But this is the life that Jake prefers, insists the source. When he was with Kirsten Dunst, all the party girl wanted to do was hit the club scene, which J can't stand. "He'd much rather stay home, make popcorn and watch a movie than step foot in a club," says the source. "So when he was looking for a girlfriend, he looked for who was past all that --and he found her in Reese."

  157. God, that Star Mag article makes Reese sound so oppressive, controlling and awful. No wonder Ryan ran like wildfire to get away from her. I feel sorry for her kids (and no wonder they always look happier with their dad). What a nightmare person she is (and she'll get worse as she gets older). Jake truly is dumber than a doorknob (actually comparing his IQ to that of a doorknob is an insult to doorknobs).

  163. Such polite people--they deserve one another. Here's a firsthand account of a theatergoer witnessing Jake/Reese texting throughout a Broadway performance of a play that won the Pulitzer and Tony:

" I liked reese and jake-- thought they made a cute sweet couple-- Now I just think they're rude.

    http://www.playbill.com/features/article/119177.html

I have no respect for anyone who would treat they're fellow actors like that. Texting on your blackberrys while people are trying to give a preformance?! Why did they come see teh show if they weren't going to watch it? And this is the best show in New York right now. It just won the Pulitzer and the Tony. Idk... maybe they didn't like it. They should have just got up and left (no one was stopping them) or at least waited till intermission.

I won't waste my money on another one of their movies."

" just signed up for imdb just so I could tell you guys that the Theatre Girl is right. I was at that showing. It was March 2nd, I still have my ticket.
Anyway, I was there and jake and reese spent the whole first act text messaging before they left at intermission. It was soo ANNOYING! They sat on the side about 2 rows back from me and the whole time I could see this annoying blue light in the corner of my eye. During intermission people (i guess who sat in the rows behind them) went to the box office wanting refunds because the ushers didn't throw them out. After the show, I went to the stage door to get my program signed and everyone was asking the cast if they could see the blue lights (of corse they did). They didn't really comment but you could tell they were ticked.
I'm not trying to start a war. Just thought you all should know. I still think they good actors, but (as it was stated) very "rude" people."

    ReplyDelete
  164. How hard is it to understand that a lot of people like Jake AND Heath?

I too think some like them equally, but others use Heath to insult Jake when they are pissed at Jake, mainly because of the Jake/Reese thing. Those posters are not Heath fans, they just use him and I think that's not fair.
I think Heath deserves to be discussed and talked about where his real fans are and not somewhere where he is mosty either tolerated or brought up for wrong reasons. In the end it's a Jake centered blog and of course posters are biased.
No one ever talked about Heath on WFT when Heath was still alive and now he's mostly brought up for aforementioned reasons.
    This botheres me a lot.

    ReplyDelete
  165. ^^^I personally adore heath, always have, and enjoy talking about him on any forum, including this one. You assume everyone is coming from a bad place and that is not true. In fact I doubt there are many fans out there who love heath more than I.

  166. OK, don't care what anyone says, as far as I'm concerned Heath carried BBM, especially in the last 20 minutes of the movie.
As for the Star crap, of course it's BS. But the interesting question is, why is it there? Has the Star got it in for Jake? Why? Certainly ain't a good image for the Prince of Persia. Hell, the limp wrist now a wimp! LOL!

  167. OK, don't care what anyone says, as far as I'm concerned Heath carried BBM, especially in the last 20 minutes of the movie.

  168. "Jake truly is dumber than a doorknob (actually comparing his IQ to that of a doorknob is an insult to doorknobs)."

Actually, I would use the term "gayer than a goose'.

The mags are just providing a counter-spin to a spate of bad press for Reeke : of course Reese decides where they visit or travel, this is just the way that Jake bonds with women, etc. Dysfunctionality is repackaged as normality.

It's all one big con game. Remember : the bigger the secret (things are fraying around the edges, jake is running from family obligations, acting out in a gay way and drinking more), the bigger the lie.

Didn't Ted say that Jake had lots of secrets?

Interesting--do tell more. What are the family obligations Jake is running from? How is he acting out in a gay way?? (That I'd like to know more of) and I did wonder about the drinking when I saw those pics of him last week where he was clearly soused.

  171. 9.44, Let me make it a bit clearer, For me, what made BBM a great movie and not another good movie was the last 20 mins of the movie. Heath did a fantastic job of it. So I say, Heath carried the movie IMO. Whether Jake was there or not (in the last 20 mins) has nothing to do with it. It is the anguish, the terrible loss that Heath portrayed that did for me.
