Tooth-babe

Dear Ted:
I'm terrible at Blind Vices; I never even try to figure them out. But I've finally been tempted to take a guess about Toothy Tile's identity. Is it...George Eads? Love the column, and I'm not even a celebrity groupie!
F.G.

Dear CSLies:
Your CSI-specific Toothy guess makes me think you’d search down Georgie-boy for an autograph...or more. Lucky for your celeb fantasies, he isn't Tooth-babe.

Dear Ted:
What is going to happen first: Are we ever going to find out who Toothy Tile is, or is our planet going to be destroyed because aliens don't like the way they are portrayed in J.J Abrams' flicks?

Dear Outting Space:
You’ll be seasick from Cloverfield 2 before T.T. gets some cojones, that’s my hunch.

Dear Ted:

Want to be in a film with Jake Gyllenhaal and Jessica Biel?

COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) - We have new information tonight on another casting call for the movie "Nailed." There was a casting call last month when casting directors were looking for girl extras. Now the movie needs adult males and senior citizens.

The extras will be used during filming Thursday. Interested people should email a photo and their contact information to the casting office.

Jake Gyllenhaal and Jessica Biel are the stars of the movie. Nailed is about a woman who goes to Washington to campaign for the bizarrely injured after she gets hit in the head with a nail.

  3. That lesbians are more easily accepted than gay men is another myth.

Homophobic men feel less threaten by lesbians.

"Straight men "manifest higher levels of prejudice" against gays than do straight women, Herek writes. That's obvious, but Herek's conclusion is not. He maintains that homophobia serves to affirm male identity through a rejection of what is deemed either unmanly or negating the importance of males. This explains why effeminate men and butch women are the most common victims of antigay violence. They threaten the terms of masculinity.
    ...
"Certainly the fear of lesbians is the fear of butch women," says Arlene Stein, the author of Sex and Sensibility: Stories of a Lesbian Generation. "But there's also the fear that women can be independent sexual actors, which is different from the issue with gay men. That doesn't mean the term homophobia can't apply to lesbians, but it has a different shape and tenor than when it's directed against men." Whatever the distinction, it isn't evident in the psychoanalytic literature on homophobia, which barely mentions lesbians even though about a third of the victims of antigay violence are women.

    Gale Harold Gets Desperate

A Gale force is about to blow through Wisteria Lane, but this time the culprit isn't Mother Nature.

Sources confirm to me exclusively that former Queer as Folk cad Gale Harold has booked a potentially recurring role on Desperate Housewives. The Vanished actor — who turned up last November as a swastika-sportin' medic in a two-part Grey's Anatomy — will play a quick-witted, charming and buttoned-down suburbanite. Picture a young Jack Lemmon, only without a cross-dressing Tony Curtis dragging him down.

He'll be introduced in the May 18 finale and could return next season in a recurring capacity.

  6. Just because Heath's performance as Ennis was iconic doesn't mean that his Joker can't be as well.

    Of course not.
Maybe it's just me, but I need an emotional bond with my favorite movies and characters.

Joker could be Heath's best performace but I'm going to remember him as Ennis, Sonny, Patrick and Sir William.

Last week I reported that Jim Carrey, Ewan McGregor, and Rodrigo Santoro had been spotted doing some "research" at Edison Farrow's popular gay Martini Tuesdays at Halo Lounge in Miami Beach.

Here's your first look at Carrey and Santoro flaunting their Versace in the film I Love You Phillip Morris, which just began shooting in Miami.

In the film, an adaptation of the Steve McVicker novel I Love You Philip Morris, Jim Carrey plays Steven Russell, a married father/conman who finds himself in the Texas prison system where he falls in love with his cellmate Phillip Morris. The romance prompted four escape attempts and a lifetime jail sentence for Russell. McGregor plays Morris, and I don't have the details on Santoro's role.

  22. OPrah Pulls Out The Kneepads

Harpo Productions released this photo of Oprah and Tom after she interviewed Tom at his home in Colorado. Various news outlets are reporting that Oprah asked Tom some tough questions like why he jumped on the couch, and why he freaked out when he was with Matt Lauer.

Harpo and their carefully planned leaks are making it seem as if Oprah was asking the really tough questions. Ummm. Do you think Tom Cruise would be flashing his trademark fake smile if Oprah had asked any tough questions? Do you think Tom would have agreed to do part two at Oprah's studio if she asked tough questions? Do you think any Scientologist or any celebrity would ever go on her show again if she asked tough questions? So, why on earth would they have us believe they asked tough questions? Because all the news outlets that are reporting the tough question angle, are also dependent on having celebrities on their programs and so they all follow in line.

Two hours on Oprah with the bulls**t excuse of the 25th anniversary of Risky Business. Good movie? Yes. Great movie? If you like hookers and sex. 25th Anniversary on Oprah good? Please. If it had been the 25th anniversary of Losin It they would have thrown that up there also. This is just a last ditch effort at Tom trying to save what is left of his career before people just tune him out until he is playing grandpa roles in his 70's.

    Fight the Bigots!

The American Family Association (AFA) is 'taking action' AGAINST the committed gay couple, Luke and Noah, on CBS soap As The World Turns.

They don't want anymore of what they call 'repulsive' kissing between the two. Yeah, well, we want MORE!

We must stand together to show our support for Luke and Noah and SHUT DOWN the AFA's campaign.

According to their site, the AFA "represents and stands for traditional family values" and believes "in holding accountable the companies which sponsor programs attacking traditional family values." Here's an excerpt of the bigoted 'action alert' the AFA sent to members after Luke and Noah's latest kiss aired on the soap.

Procter & Gamble has resumed using explicit, open-mouth homosexual kissing in their soap opera, "As the World Turns." P&G decided to include this type of content as a commitment to "diversity." P&G stopped showing such scenes some months ago, but has now decided to again help promote the homosexual agenda which includes homosexual marriage.

Gay activists are hopeful that the P&G effort will desensitize viewers to the homosexual lifestyle and help make the unhealthy and immoral lifestyle more acceptable to society, especially to children and youth.

View a scene from the April 23, 2008 episode by P&G. WARNING – content is repulsive!

"As the World Turns" is owned and controlled completely by P&G. No network made this decision. P&G alone made the decision to support the homosexual agenda. P&G needs to hear from you today. We have provided a sample letter for you to send to Chairman Lafley, but strongly encourage you to add a personal message.

The AFA are a bunch of bigoted hate mongers! Isn't infidelity totally against family values? Why no campaigns against infidelity in the numerous shows that glorify such 'sin'? Luke and Noah are a committed couple–people in love kiss. Gay people are normal. We're you're brothers, sisters, mothers, father. The AFA needs to stop drinking Intolerade!

P&G, who produce the show, have set up a line in response to the AFA's push.

Call P&G to register your support of Luke and Noah: 1-800-331-3774

Do it! Do it! Do it!

P.S. We can't believe P&G actually set up a freakin' phone number in response to this. But, that's why it's even more important for you to call and show your support!

  29. I believe in the gay community the worse thing to be called is "a bottom."

It's just a name for a sexual role.

    Gay top, bottom or versatile?

Most men in chat rooms or message boards choose to explicitly ask if their prospect is top, bottom or versatile. Years ago (before gay men were able to find other men online), non-verbal signals were used to disclose their preferences. For example, if a band, earring, tattoo or other jewelry was on the right side, it signified a bottom. If they were on the left, then the guy was a top. Gay men also wore colors to signify certain sexual practices. Wearing these colors on the left or right would alert their partners if they were a top or bottom respectively. These non-verbal signs are rarely used today due to the internet and the ability for gay men to communicate and meet in other non-threatening environments.

You might point out top readers that one would use that term, say, when chasing a gay guy with intent to harm. Or, say, not hiring him. Or maybe not letting him rent an apartment in one’s building. I expect more from her. She’s no dummy. She knows exactly what that word means.

  42. Clinton Taking Heat for North Carolina Governor's 'Pansy' Remark

North Carolina Governor Mike Easley is being criticized for the use of an anti-gay slur in his endorsement/introduction of Hillary Clinton today. In turn, Clinton is being criticized for standing by and saying nothing.

Said Easley: "This lady right here makes Rocky Balboa look like a pansy."

The Smoking Gun notes: "Easley's compliment, as it were, may offend some voters since the word 'pansy' is often used in a derogative fashion to describe a male homosexual. Or at least that's what it says in the Webster's New Collegiate Dictionary on our shelf (we scanned the 'pansy' entry from page 828 and posted it below). Other dictionaries (Oxford, Cambridge, and Dictionary.com) offer a similar definition for 'pansy,' describing it as a 'disparaging' or 'derogatory' term for an 'effeminate or homosexual man.'"

    'Pansy' Remark

    ReplyDelete
  43. I agree with the posters who were offended at those sites. I think it was the wrong thing to say, and just on msnbc, they had a segment about the gov and saying how Easley appeals to more conservative democrats in the state, and he even likes Nascar and hunting. So maybe this is a ploy to get Hillary the vote of the moderates in the state. A lousy way to do it imo.

    ReplyDelete
  44. 'Pansy'?

As Hillary wages a kind of culture war inside the Democratic Party, Mike Easley used something that sounded to John Aravosis like an anti-gay slur as she stood beside him this morning, saying that Hillary "makes Rocky Balboa look like a pansy". Aravosis: "In case anyone has been living under a rock, pansy is slang for 'fag.'"

That's how I heard it too.

Here's Merriam-Webster: a usually disparaging : a weak or effeminate man or boy b usually disparaging: a male homosexual

  65. Did Heath Ledger Really Slag Off Philip Seymour Hoffman? The ‘Times’ Says So!

In the middle of Leon Wieseltier's thoroughly entertaining review of Martin Amis's book The Second Plane — you know, the one in the Times Book Review that includes the deathless put-down, "Pity the writer who wants to be Bellow but is only Mailer" — Wieseltier attributes a quotation to Heath Ledger that we're almost certain isn't true. He claims, in making a point about how Amis's flourishes of style defeat his purpose, that Heath Ledger shit-talked Philip Seymour Hoffman after Hoffman won the Oscar for Capote. Writes Wieseltier:

He is dead to the damage his virtuosity inflicts upon his urgency. Instead, he pulls focus, and pulls, and pulls. His book reminds me of what Heath Ledger is said to have remarked, in disappointment, about Philip Seymour Hoffman’s Oscar: “I thought it was for the best acting, not the most acting.”

Wait, really? Heath Ledger said that? We call B.S.

The phrase "I thought it was for the best acting" is a Googlewhack — it yields but one result, Wieseltier's review. A broader Google search, "best acting" + "most acting" + "heath ledger," yields only six results, and the only relevant one is a blog post quoting Wieseltier's review.

Wieseltier cloaks his quotation in some butt-covering language, of course: It's not something Ledger definitely remarked, it's "what Heath Ledger is said to have remarked." "Is said" … by whom? No one on the Internet. Did someone tell Wieseltier this story at a party? If so, isn't it sort of weird to just toss it into a book review that has nothing to do with either Heath Ledger or Philip Seymour Hoffman? And why did the Book Review's editors let this line get through? Just because Heath Ledger is dead, and therefore can't sue?

We know we're making a big deal out of a small line, but it bugs us when stuff like this gets introduced into the world. Because ten years from now everyone will think Heath Ledger said this, and Google-searching for the line will yield thousands of results, just because of a seed planted by Leon Wieseltier on April 27, 2008. And even though we happen to agree with this comparison of Ledger's and Hoffman's performances, we don't think Ledger actually said it.

So, Leon Wieseltier — where'd you hear this story? Drop us a line and let us know. Also, while you're reading, we should tell you the rest of the review was awesome. Please don't destroy us like you did Amis.

Interview Magazine: HEATH LEDGER A TRIBUTE

PHILIP SEYMOUR HOFFMAN: Heath and I literally met through that whole awards time [around Brokeback Mountain]. We were hanging out a lot together. I just remember that he had a childlike enthusiasm. His body was always in motion.

PHILIP SEYMOUR HOFFMAN: I remember that whenever Heath talked about something he liked, he did it in the way that any fan would. He wasn’t somebody trying to cover up his excitement about something, or someone. When I think of him, I see him in a state of dance or something—this constant state of movement. It didn’t seem like anxiety to me. It seemed like excitement.

PHILIP SEYMOUR HOFFMAN: Heath didn’t have the cynicism that this business can eventually put upon people, or the pretention that certain artists can carry with them sometimes. He had a really honest quality about him. He obviously had never lost his wide-eyed optimism.

  77. ACLU Slams Tennessee Principal for Outing Gay Students

The ACLU has sent a letter to Memphis City Schools, demanding the school system implement new policies, reprimand principal Daphne Beasley of Hollis F. Price Middle College High School in South Memphis, and compensate and apologize to two students whom Beasley outed in a public posted list which the ACLU says violated the students' constitutional rights to equal protection, freedom of expression and association, due process and privacy.

    ABC24 Memphis reports:

"The ACLU says in September 2007, Beasley asked her staff to give her the names of students who were couples, heterosexual and homosexual, because she wanted to keep an eye on them to cut down on public displays of affection. She's accused of publicly posting the names of those students, including two boys, Andrew and Nicholas, who had just started dating. The ACLU says that in doing so, Beasley revealed their relationship to other students, teachers and even their parents."

As a result of Beasley's actions, the gay students have been the target of verbal harassment and even discrimination from teachers:

"One of the young men, Nicholas, an 11th grader who just made the Dean's List, spoke with Eyewitness News Everywhere. 'It was actually frightening,' he says, 'to see a list with my name on it where not just other teachers could see but students as well.' Nicholas says his teachers and other students treat him differently as a result of Principal Beasley's decision and that he and Andrew have both had to deal with verbal assaults. Nicholas was also not allowed to go on a trip to New Orleans to help rebuild homes because, as one of his teacher's explained, he would 'embarrass' the school by engaging in gay affection. 'I really feel that my personal privacy was invaded,' Nicholas says. 'I mean, Principal Beasley called my mother and outed me to my mother!'"

Said Hedy Weinberg, Executive Director at the ACLU of Tennessee: "The principal's outing of these two students to their families, classmates, and teachers is unacceptable. Its only purpose was to intimidate not only these students but all gay students at Hollis Price. Educators should be focused on educating their students and not on harassing them because of their sexual orientation or the people with whom they associate."

Me thinks he is no longer in the "in" crowd. Actions speak louder than words don't they? 79. I really wonder why Heath chose Jake to be Matilda's Godfather? He still was close to his childhood friends from Australia. It'd be just logical to choose one of them! Maybe Michelle, who I think was very fond of Jake, influenced Heath in his decision? But I think Heath was very fond of Jake as well and probably also thought he was the best choice. Jake seemed to hang out with Heath and Michelle all the time during the BBM promotion tour as well. Maybe it wasn't really Matilda he wanted to spend his time with, but her Daddy? I think Jake had a big, old crush on Heath at the time.
I think Jake is very ambitious and career oriented, which isn't bad per se, but he also seems to be very self-centered which is a characteristic that annoys me very much.
I don't think Jake is a bad person, but he's a person that, I think, would annoy me in real life.

  85. Michelle Williams to Leave New York?

Actress Michelle Williams is seriously thinking leaving New York, specifically Brooklyn, three months after the tragic death of Heath Ledger.

The prying eyes of paparazzi and tabloid press may have finally pushed her to the decision. Since Ledger's death on Jan. 22, Williams has not been able to spend a peaceful moment in her own neighborhood with toddler daughter Matilda.

The former "Dawson's Creek" star and Ledger had been beacons of light for their Brooklyn neighborhood, where they blended in easily. I recall a movie premiere a couple of years ago when Ledger was extolling the virtues of outer-borough living to new neighbors Emily Mortimer and Alessandro Nivola.

But Ledger moved out last year and returned to Manhattan, leaving Williams and their daughter behind. Since he died, Williams has been stalked and hounded on a regular basis. Inappropriate and rude? Certainly. But on a real level, it's no way to grieve.

Ironically, Williams' career is going great guns right now. Her Charlie Kaufman film, "Synecdoche, New York," premieres in Cannes next month. She's currently shooting "Shutter Island" with Martin Scorsese.

But don't expect her to give any interviews or do any press concerning Ledger. At Monday night's premiere of "Made of Honor," she came to support pal Busy Phillips, who played Audrey on "Dawson's Creek." But it was the lowest-key appearance ever, as Williams was cloaked in black and wearing a low-slung cap.

Heath Ledger Gives The Oscar To Clooney

Gossip Fodder blog notes that at a recent press conference for his new movie Candy at the Berlin Film Festival, Heath Ledger was asked what George Clooney might win at the Oscars. Ledger reluctantly admitted Clooney deserved the Best Supporting Actor trophy for his work in Syriana, which, of course, is the category his Brokeback co-star Jake Gyllenhaal is competing in. The festival website offers video evidence (the Jack Twist diss occurs precisely at 14:30). A partial transcript of his response:

Do I really have to answer the George Clooney one? I think he deserves Best Supporting Actor, I thought he was amazing in Syriana. I haven't yet seen Good Night and Good Luck, I've heard it's an amazing movie, and I'm sure he deserves that as well. I mean, who really is the winner, it's such a surreal concept to be competing. [...] We're all just being dragged through it.

It was an honest response, but a more diplomatic answer could have avoided the slight to his co-star, who recently told an interviewer how excited he was to receive his "Congratulations, mate!" phone call from Ledger the morning the nominations were announced. Isn't it always the way—the blue-eyed cowboy you've had a thousand times is never quite as alluring as the dashing, bearish CIA agent you have yet to conquer.

UPDATE: A publicist for Team Ledger got in touch to let us know that the actor's answer to the loaded question was not intended as some kind of slight of co-star Jake Gyllenhaal, but was meant in a spirit of celebrating the entire brotherhood of nominated actors. Competition is weird, he wishes everyone could win, he'd like to buy the world a Coke, etc etc. We invite you to view the video again (the moment of truth is at 14:30 or so) and draw your own hilariously wrongheaded conclusions about the way Ledger expressed admiration for his peer. And while we're setting the record straight on this matter: Ang Lee's publicist would like to thank Ledger for not recognizing Clooney's directorial talent, thereby saving her an afternoon of exasperated phone calls.

  104. Next, I will give my honest thoughts about Heath Ledger as the Joker. All I can say is....oh my sweet Jesus. Perfect. Just perfect. It takes the charisma of Hannibal Lecter, the sheer cruelty of Anton Chigurh, and the humor of a certain Coen brother's movie. Heath Ledger isn't just playing a character from a comic. He's become a person. He has become completely unrecognizable as the Joker. His final completed movie will make him a legend among actors. For those of you who have seen the trailer, you can probably tell that Heath Ledger will be brilliant, but the trailer footage doesn't do justice for some of his scenes in the movie. New York magazine's Vulture blargh smells a rat in Leon Wieseltier's "thoroughly entertaining" review of a Martin Amis book from yesterday's New York Times. In a strange non sequitur, Wieseltier wrote that formerly living actor Heath Ledger once said of Phillip Seymour Hoffman's Oscar (Ledger was also nominated that year for Butt Cowboys 3: Paul Haggis' Revenge): "I thought it was for the best acting, not the most acting." Funny and sort of accurate, but untrue! says Vulture. Conducting a thorough Google search, they were unable to find any mention of this Heath Ledger bon mot. Did Wieseltier make it up? Was it just a small, unconfirmed anecdote he picked up somewhere? Either way, Vulture doesn't like that Ledger's rep will now be sullied for saying a sort of mean thing once, years ago. When he was alive. [NYM]

I can see why Wieselter would want to change it. The review wouldn't read so authoritatively if he quipped, "His book reminds me of what EW.com writer Bruce Fretts remarked, in disappointment, about John Lithgow's victory over Garry Shandling in the 1997 Emmys."

Did you watch the BBM press conference at the Toronto Film Festival? What tells me that not only Heath and Jake were friends, but also Michelle and Jake is a little gesture from Michelle, she was stroking his back to reasure him at one point.
That's what you do when you are comfortable and close to someone. She was genuinely happy for Jake when he won his BAFTA, not as much as Heath, but still very happy for, what looked to me, a good friend.
It is possible they didn't stay as close. Or if the Reese thing is really business, like Ted C. says, than maybe Michelle understood that "the show must go on". If it isn't show, well, then you must set priorities and for him his girlfriend was priority and he didn't mind if his actions might be considered questionable.
Busy Phillips definitely was a class act in this difficult time.

Here are some interesting quotes from Amber Heard (Austin's co-star) about The Informers:

"It's a tough novel. Sex scenes are hard to do."
    - Amber Heard

"I hope the audiences have a really difficult time with it. That's why I'm in this industry. I want to challenge people. I want people to think. I don't want people to just zone out and get everything that expected when they walked into the movie. The novel by Bret Easton Ellis I was a big fan of. It's dark and it's real and it's gritty and it's hard to swallow."
    - Amber Heard

"It was really difficult. I always play characters so different from myself. I don't look like a character actor but that's a hundred percent what I am. I always play characters that are difficult and challenging and that's why I like them or else I would just have a normal job. [laughs]. But, the film The Informers, I'm very proud of just having seen a little bit of it and having worked on it, it was hard to film. It was hard to swallow. It's going to be really difficult for Middle America to say good things about me after that film."
    - Amber Heard

"He was an amazing person and a very talented artist. One has a lot of respect for those qualities that are kind of rare. The things that tormented him and caused his passing exist everywhere in reality. You go down to the street here in Beverly Hills and there's somebody affected in the same way, by substance or escapism. It was sad though because he was an artist and he put himself in the public eye and he's going to be scrutinzed. People are going to look at him and say that the industry did this or the drugs or whatever and young people are this way. It's not just young people. It's not old people, it's not only actors. It's everybody. Everybdody knows somebody with a problem." [On Brad Renfro]
    - Amber Heard

"I read the script, loved it. I said, "It's based on the novel right?" And they said, "Oh, no, no... Don't read the novel. You won't want to do the movie!" They were afraid that a girl like me would be afraid to jump into a project so dark. Little did they know, that's what I love. You know me..."
    - Amber Heard

"Drugs, sex and rock 'n' roll. For everyone. It's brilliant. It's really gross – I mean that word very specifically. It's very real. It's very gritty. It's very in your face. It's about decadent, decadent Hollywood. The nastiest, beautiful thing you've ever seen. It's a hard pill to swallow, but very powerful."
    - Amber Heard

"She's a bad girl. I play Christie and if I say too much, I'll give away a very important part of the film. She's very wealthy and she represents a very strong evil. She does drugs and is very promiscuous. It's like a Crash-type movie with several different storylines linked by my character."
    - Amber Heard

"Not for the right project. It's my job. Not to be naked, but to tell a story. And if it's important to the story, I don't have any problem with it. I think it's silly the way society puts a high price-tag on the body. It leaves a bad taste in my mouth. It's sad. Those remnants of religion. I don't appreciate people's conservative views on that. It's less intimidating than you think it is. It's beautiful. It's art. And I'm glad to be a part of it." [On sex and nude scenes.]
    - Amber Heard

"I do get those feelings and my dad had some interesting things to say about Kim Basinger [laughs]!"
    - Amber Heard

"There's a certain deadening that happens in this industry that makes it just like working with another co-worker in a sense. But they're all very talented actors." [On the huge powerhouse cast.]
    - Amber Heard

AfterElton.com is pleased to announce that the voting is now open for our second annual Hot 100, a list of the world’s hottest men, chosen by the gay and bisexual male readers of this site.

Here at AfterElton.com, we think the existence of such a list is downright revolutionary. After all, there are plenty of lists of beautiful people compiled by and for straight people. But the AfterElton.com Hot 100 is all about gay and bisexual men telling the world which men we think are sexy.

And tell the world we will! Last year’s list was AfterElton.com’s most popular feature ever, with thousands of votes cast. When the results were announced, they were picked up all over the world, on local television stations and on national news outlets.

AfterElton.com also received personal reactions from some of the men on the list, including Anderson Cooper, John Barrowman, John Amaechi, and Cheyenne Jackson. "I'm flattered to be on the list,” Cooper told us. “Clearly, they have not seen my pale, skinny chicken legs.

What does it mean to be hot to a gay or bisexual guy? It’s different for every guy, of course. For some, it’s all about a killer smile and a rockin’ bod. For others, it’s about talent, passion, intelligence, or wit (as well as a rockin’ bod!).

For some gay and bisexual men, the very hottest guys of all are those who are out and proud. For others, an attractive straight man will do just fine!

The beauty of the AfterElton.com Hot 100 is that you, the reader, get to decide exactly what qualifies as hot.

  124. T.R. Knight and Mark Cornelsen Betrothed?

E!'s Marc Malkin speculates that T.R. Knight and Mark Cornelsen may be one of the couples set to take part in a mass commitment ceremony, hosted by Knight, in West Hollywood on June 4:

"About 50 couples will take part in the ceremony presided by West Hollywood Mayor Jeffrey Prang and witnessed by Shepard’s mom, Judy to mark the start of National Gay Pride Month. Couples will also be wearing Erase Hate pendants, from Love and Pride jewelry line designer Udi Behr."

Of course Malkin uses the word "tie the knot" and we know gays in California don't get that level of dignity in California - yet. Which may be a good thing, considering Knight and Cornelsen have been dating for less than six months.

"Stars in the Closet" Blind Items

    No. 1
This actor is one of the world's leading men. His career stretches back more than 20 years and he is famous for his liasions with various high-profile women. However, despite the ladies on his arm, friends claim this star has been having gay affairs for several years and goes to great lengths to hide them.

    No. 2
This star has a manly reputation, with film roles to match, but he secretly spends his spare time in LA gay bars. He has become more relaxed about being seen on the gay scene in recent years, however, and has been spotted on a few occasions. His fans would be shocked to know his true sexuality, as he has a reputation as a 'blokey' bloke.

    No. 3
This actor has been a major Hollywood star and household name for years, having starred in many big-budget movies. Outwardly, he is happily married and is often seen out and about with his wife, but sources close to the star say the reality of the situation is that he has been struggling with his sexuality for some time.

    No. 4
This star is relatively new to the world of showbiz, but tongues have been waggling since he made his arrival in Hollywood. He is known for his good looks and has the hearts of teenage girls fluttering...but we're sure his worldwide fanbase would be gutted if they knew that he actually prefers men over women.

    Lonesome Dove, Lonesome Book Lover

The stars came out for love of Larry McMurtry, just as, 45 years ago, McMurtry came out to Los Angeles, and kept coming back -- for love of books.

McMurtry won a Pulitzer Prize for ‘’Lonesome Dove,’’ one of his 40-plus books. Many of them have become films -- ``The Last Picture Show’’ and ``Terms of Endearment’’ and ``Horseman, Pass By,’’ which became ‘’Hud.’’ He co-wrote the Oscar-winning screenplay to ``Brokeback Mountain.’’

A video tribute screened during the Los Angeles Public Library’s literary awards dinner on Wednesday corralled the likes of Jake Gyllenhaal, Diane Lane and Jeff Bridges to laud McMurtry as a creative force, and a teller of truths as well as tales. His friend, the actress and photographer Diane Keaton, was there to hand McMurtry his award [along with a droll print of her photo of a pair of taxidermied co-joined sheep that she and McMurtry had come across on some shared adventure[.

It was McMurtry himself who delivered the sorrowful note of the evening – which coincided with the day that Dutton’s, a renowned Los Angeles independent bookstore, closed its doors.

When McMurtry came to LA in 1963, he said, the thing that made LA life possible for a bibliophile from Texas, and left him defending LA’s reputation throughout the world for four decades, was LA’s 115 second-hand bookstores.

Six were on Hollywood Boulevard, and they stayed open until midnight – a marvel for a Texan whose small town rolled up the sidewalks by 8. He can still name 75 of them, but whenever he starts to, he can’t get past the first three without tearing up. ``Even thinking about them makes me cry.’’

And as independent bookstores have vanished from LA like the cowboy from the West, it `makes me very sad to come here now.’’

The crowd at the Library Foundation was well-dressed and well-heeled, and every eye was on McMurtry’s damp eyes, as he stood onstage in his boots and jeans and a wide red tie that surely dated from the Carter Administration. He read –- tried to read -– part of a Philip Larkin poem called ``Going, Going,’’ but then he got to ‘’the stanza that always kills me’’ and his voice faltered again:

``And that will be England gone, The shadows, the meadows, the lanes, The guildhalls, the carved choirs. There'll be books; it will linger on In galleries; but all that remains For us will be concrete and tyres.’’

McMurtry has been romancing the book since he was six years old, and a relative heading off to World War II left him a box of 19 books. He has since collected and cherished 38,000 more.

Now, he says, ``I think that I will live to see the bookless library,’’ populated only with rows and rows of computers. ``It seems to me the things they can’t do are more important than the things they can – they can’t bring us love, endow us with grace … they can’t exempt us from death.’’

And computers may hasten other deaths: of his beloved books. ‘’I don’t think they’re going to be there much longer.’’

  140. Anne Hathaway Better Start Working

Anne Hathaway better start signing on to do a bunch more films because her boyfriend just settled a lawsuit filed against him for $1.3M. Anne and Raffaelo Follieri have stuck together despite the fact that it seems as if he is sued by everyone for various financial misdeeds and even spent some time recently in a New York City jail for allegedly bouncing a $250,000 check. Follieri says there was just a misunderstanding. I wouldn't know. 7-Eleven always balks when I try and cash a $25 check let alone one for $250,000. Turns out they don't keep that much in their safe. Who knew?

Anyway, I am guessing that besides making Anne pay for lunches and dinners that Follieri may have asked Anne for a couple of bucks here and there. You know $5 for a toll, or $10 for gas or $25,000 for some new suits.

I have no doubt he is a very smooth talker and probably has her completely convinced that he is the real deal and very genuine. Unfortunately it appears that the everyone else doesn't share the same high opinion of him. She should have dumped him a long time ago. Since she hasn't, if I were him, I would try and marry her, and manage her and start getting her to work so that he can start paying off that $1.3M. Of course he could always write another check.

  143. The Dish: One tough cookie

What do George Clooney, Dustin Hoffman, Lily Tomlin and James Caan have in common? They count themselves among the actors who have had run-ins with mercurial director David O. Russell. Caan is the most recent member of the club, storming off the set of the political comedy "Nailed" after a heated argument with Russell about a scene involving a cookie.

Clooney's issue with Russell dates back to a fistfight on the set of 1999's "Three Kings," and Hoffman and Tomlin were subjected to a profane (and YouTube-documented) tirade on the set of "I Heart Huckabees." No word on who will replace Caan in "Nailed," or who among the cast of Jessica Biel, Jake Gyllenhaal, Tracy Morgan, James Marsden and Catherine Keener might be the next to go.

  146. Forgive me for my post, because it won't have much to do with Jake.
I was pondering about life and death and Heath tonight.
I like Heath, but he was too weak for the environment he lived and worked in. There was an interview in which Jake said how sensitve Heath was. I think he took everything too much to heart for his own good.
Yes, he was respected and liked by colleagues and friends, but in the end he died alone. His family and real close friends live in Australia. Since Michelle and he broke up he hung out with dubious "friends" who certainly didn't even try to help him with his problems. Where were the more genuine friends he probably had in N.Y. and L.A.? Did they try to help or did they turn their backs on him?
What is disappointing is that after his death some of these (supposed) more genuine friends didn't even think it was necessary to pay any kind of tribute and on top of that behaved disrespectful with their actions.
Heath's tragedy should teach people a few things: "Fight for your well being, don't wait for others to help you, there might not be anyone around, instead help yourself. Life is too short anyway, try to avoid losing it earlier than it's supposed to".
He had a daughter, his career took of. With 28 everything ended for him.
I guess what I wanted to say is that in the end you are responsible for yourself. Unfortunately when you are in a dark place all of a sudden the number of good friends decimates. (The true ones stay, but they are in the minority.)
Be a decent human being, but don't let people walk all over you. And don't take everything too seriously, rather with a grain of salt.
    End of rambling! :)

I completely agree with you. It deeply upset me when I first heard of Heath's death that he died alone and he had no real support system (although a bunch of enablers) nearby. If he had a support system, he might have survived--the way Owen Wilson did because his brother found him and Owen attempted suicide while Heath's death was an accident.

    Not really, just this:

"Austinnicholsfan.com has been down for a bit and Dani (Danielle) said it would be down till summer, but is updating at the Austin Nichols myspace -- Some of the stuff in the update under 4/11/08:

    * INFORMERS, is being edited now. Apparently, Austin does sex scenes with Kim Bassinger, Amanda Heard and a guy. (All separately)

    * Austin is talking to David Milch about a new HBO or TV series, cop story.

    * He is also talking to producers about a new movie, EARTHQUAKE WEATHER."

  151. Apparently, Austin does sex scenes with Kim Bassinger, Amanda Heard and a guy. (All separately)

    Typo - it's Amber Heard.

    Amber Heard about The Informers:

"She's a bad girl. I play Christie and if I say too much, I'll give away a very important part of the film. She's very wealthy and she represents a very strong evil. She does drugs and is very promiscuous. It's like a Crash-type movie with several different storylines linked by my character."

On sex and nude scenes: "Not for the right project. It's art. And I'm glad to be a part of it."

  152. Don't put your skates in storage just yet: "Xanadu" leads sign on through 2009

Yes, the Little Gay Rollerskating Musical That Could, Broadway's insanely camp Xanadu musical, has secured all of its leads through January of aught nine. Out lead Cheyenne Jackson, impossibly Newton-Johnny Kerry Butler, Tony Roberts, and bookend divas Mary Testa and Jackie Hoffman have all renewed their contracts through next year.

Granted, I'm not a Broadway expert, but isn't that quite a hefty renewal? And for a show that no one thought would ever get off the ground, no less! Several AfterElton.com staffers (myself included, although I saw it pre-Cheyenne) have seen and loved the show, so we think this is great news. Can we credit newly-crowned Mr. Broadway (Xanadu's Marty Thomas) for giving the show the bump it needed to lock in for another nine months? We'll never know ... just go see it.

    Seriously.

Maggie Gyllenhaal Replaces Collette in Mendes Comedy

Maggie Gyllenhaal (upcoming The Dark Knight) will replace Toni Collette in Sam Mendes' untitled relationship comedy for Focus Features, says Variety.

The film, which stars John Krasinski and Maya Rudolph, is about a young couple who travel around the U.S. searching for a place to put down roots.

Dave Eggers and wife Vendela Vida wrote the original screenplay.

Gyllenhaal will play a bohemian college professor who is an old friend of the character played by Krasinski. Collette dropped out of the film due to scheduling delays on the shoot, which recently got under way in Connecticut. Gyllenhaal begins filming her role next week.
