The Truth Shall Set You Free

"On April 16, 21-year-old Azariah Southworth, the host of a Christian music television show called The Remix, came out publicly as a gay man to the Nashville-based gay publication Out & About. Since his brave decision, Southworth has seen a groundswell of support from the gay press and gay fans, and silence from the networks carrying his show, Christian media, and his show's fanbase.

AE: Was there a straw that broke the camel’s back? What made you decide to actually go forward and come out publicly?
AS: Well, it’s been a long time coming, as I said. I went through some things this past year and did a lot of research about what the Bible really says about homosexuality and did a lot of prayer, and I finally came to the conclusion that, you know what? This is okay. For me, this is okay. And I became confident in that and confident in who I am.

I knew the risk I was taking, but I found that it was going to be better to live my life authentically and honestly rather to continue to do what I was doing, building a career and suppressing feelings and being in denial. Because careers will always end, but who I am as a person goes further beyond that and the legacy that I want to leave is not one of denial and suppressing anything. I want to be honest and authentic with people.

AE: If you have any words of advice to any folks out there, young people or Christians who are struggling with their sexuality, or anyone else, what advice would you give them?
AS: That you’re not alone. You’re not abandoned. That God loves you unconditionally and that means that he loves you without any requirements. He doesn’t need you to meet any requirements or standards. That he loves you as you are and for who you are, right now. Reach out to someone that you can trust and that you feel will listen to you. You are loved. I mean, that’s the main point that I want to make to people, to let them know that they are loved and accepted, and I hope that they find that.

Dear Ted:
Got to ask…is Toothy Tile the obnoxious Spencer Pratt? Not that I think he, Heidi, Lauren and the group are actors by any means, but he and Heidi sure seem to be putting on an "act" with all the lovey-dovey fake photo moments. Seems like they have the perfect fake relationship. Also, what's up with Audrina? Every picture that girl takes has her eyes rolling up into her head...gross!

There’s nothing we know (or care) less about than the intricacies of the epic melodrama that is The Hills, except, perhaps, what goes on—or not—in Hugh Hefner's boudoir. That said, one thing we know for certain is that Spencer is no Toothy, nor will he ever be.

  1. AE: Have you found that the world of Christian broadcasting in general or Christian media is not hospitable for gays? Do you think there is a place for gays to be working openly in that environment?

AS: As long as Pat Robertson is alive, [laughing] I don’t think there will be. As of right now, I think there are so many gay people in the Christian industry, it’s ridiculous. Either people know about it and they just don’t speak about it, or they don’t care ... as long as it’s hush-hush and you’re not living it out and you don’t act upon it and you just are very quiet about it, it’s okay. So, I know people in bands, I know people in the limelight and behind the scenes in the Christian industry that are gay. I think that if we all just kind of came out together, people wouldn’t know what to do and they’d have to accept it.

Someone told me that Jan Crouch said that if all the gay people at CBN stopped working there, CBN would shut down.

AE: It sounds like Hollywood, pretty much!
    AS: Yeah, so true.

  2. Wonder why he's a silent backer? Is he embarrased by it? Plenty of actors have production shingles for this kind of thing. Why isn't he putting his name to the film as a producer if he's backing it?

Because he likes the script and Kristin Gore is a pal (more forum gossip)?

  4. Q: Many of my friends saw Shelter this weekend. Though one local gay theater critic panned it, my friends & everyone from the softball-playing gays to the Sondheim-worshipping gays & loved the movie. One friend commented he has not thought this hard about a gay movie since Brokeback Mountain. So the question is what other projects does here! have to follow up this success? They might actually be able to single-handedly turn the gay film genre around. – Bill, Minneapolis,MN

A: The Flying Monkey completely agrees with you about Shelter. Alas, it saddens me to report that here!’s next movie, Kiss the Bride, which opened in theaters April 18th (and will debut on here! next month) isn’t nearly as good. It stars Tori Spelling, who is wasted in her first gay flick since 1999's Trick (which is one of the Flying Monkey’s all-time favorite gay movies). The two male leads are so bland and interchangeable, it wasn’t until about halfway through the movie that I started being able to tell them apart. To my surprise, Kiss the Bride is by the director of Latter Days (2003), another movie I liked a lot.

Still, the Flying Monkey recently wrote a full article on the innovations that here! is bringing to the gay movie marketplace. If things go as planned (and assuming there aren’t too many more stinkers like Kiss the Bride), I think you’re right, and they really could turn the indie gay film genre around.

  5. A White Prince of Persia?

Super-producer Jerry Bruckheimer is planning for a new movie based on the videogame Prince of Persia: Sands of Time. Big-screen adaptations of videogames are usually crap but as Sands of Time actually have a story in the game, I think this adaptation is worth to see.

Unfortunately, the rumored prince will be played by the very white Jake Gyllenhaal! Now I think Mr. Gyllenhaal (Brokeback Mountain, Rendition) is a pretty solid actor, but when the title is ‘Prince of Persia: Sands of Time’, surely an actor as white as Jake Gyllenhaal is not the guy you choose. The prince has to at least look Persian, right?

But then we are talking about Hollywood, where a big, black guy can play Kingpin (see Daredevil). Luckily the actor hasn’t accepted the offer yet. I hope he never will.

Well, that’s if you believe Terrence Dean’s book publicist. The former MTV executive will soon release Hiding In Hip-Hop, which will allegedly expose the genre’s biggest homos. From the release:

“Hiding In Hip-Hop” uncovers a hidden and well-known unspoken secret. Deep within the confines of Hip-Hop is a prominent gay sub-culture. A world that industry insiders are keenly aware of, but choose to ignore.

According to Dean, “This book is filled with intrigue, sexy celebrity bed partners, abundance of drugs, and of course, the down low/gay men and celebrities in the entertainment industry.

  37. Neil Reveals all to Howard Stern

For over a year now, I've written about Howard Stern's positive impact on the gay community, and his interview today with openly gay "How I Met Your Mother" star Neil Patrick Harris was perhaps one of the best examples to date.

It's probably the most interesting interview Harris will do in his life. Harris spoke in-depth about his sexuality, but Stern wanted more -- and Harris was more than game to reveal details. Below are some highlights: (Note -- the Stern show is on Sirius Satellite, and therefore uncensored.)

Harris said he began to think he was gay when he was 13, but hadn't "formulated it in his brain" at that time. He said he continued to date a lot of Hollywood women, including actress Christine Taylor. Here's what he said about Taylor: "She's like the coolest, nicest chick ever. She's an absolute catch, and I thought if I'm not going to feel the super sparks with her, than it probably means that I'm gay." He estimated he'd been with between 12-15 girls before he came out of the closet.

He had his first same-sex encounter in New York when he was doing "Rent." Harris said he was seduced by a gay male "Rent" cast member: "I think I was a conquest. I was that 'straight guy' that (they thought) might be gay, that they were really hoping could be the one."

Howard: "Ever been with a black guy?" Harris: "I've made out with a black guy, but never fooled around. It just never happened."

When he told his parents he was gay: "I think their main concern was one of safety. Because their big worry was that it meant that I was going to be on crystal meth and get AIDS and have crazy sex with all sorts of random people."

On the topic of Perez Hilton trying to out him: "He (Perez) was sort of on a witch hunt to out me. He started posting things saying 'If you've ever fooled around with Neil to please send pictures.' He was really trying to get some scandal going. So rather than have to repsond to that, I'd rather just respond to the topic at hand." When asked if he'd ever confronted Perez on the issue, Harris was diplomatic. "Well it's a tricky subject because people decide they want to be out in the open whether in a public forum or in their family at their own time. But Perez is from a generation that feels like (being out) is a non-issue. It's offensive to him when people don't declare that, because in his world, it's always been a part of who he is." (Stern then discussed how much he disagrees with Perez outing people.)

Harris said that he and his boyfriend are monogamous and he doesn't believe in open relationships under any circumstances. He also talked about being with his boyfriend for four years, and loved the relationship. "The best part about being in a relationship is like, going through phases and having things being great and things being not-great," he said. "I don't know that once your gay you get this card that says that if things aren't going great you can go fuck other guys." He also said the great part about being in a guy-guy relationship is so sometimes you could be a top sometimes you can be bottom.

Little knonw fact: Harris said he was so self-conscious of his big ears after "Doogie Howser" that he had surgery on them so they wouldn't stick out so much. And speaking of Doogie, he said he lost his virginity to a college girl who "wanted to have sex with Doogie." He said it was over very fast...

Howard then wanted to play a game of "Fuck, Marry, Kill," and Harris gladly obliged. Here were the choices:

Sylvestor Stallone, John Travolta and Tom Cruise: "Hmm...I'd probably..well, they're all creepy. I'd probably fuck Stallone, he seems more like... a guy. I'd probably marry Tom Cruise, because of all the money and I'd kill Travolta." He said he sensed a "creepy, weird vibe" with Travolta that he couldn't quite figure out, and that he "looks a little odd." He then raved about Travolta in "Hairspray."

Conan Obrien, Jay Leno and David Letterman: "Oh wow! Ok --I'd fuck Conan. I'd kill Leno. And I'd marry Letterman." Howard: "Would you rather fuck Conan or have Conan fuck you?" Harris: [Laughing] "I would fuck Conan, that would be hilarious. Just to watch his hair move around in the front!"

Howard Stern, Fred Norris (Stern show cast member) or Gary Dellabate (Stern show producer): "I'd probably fuck Howard." (Howard's response: "Thank you!") "I'd probably marry Fred, and I'd probably kill Gary." When he found out Fred was uncircumcised, he changed his mind. "Oh -- in that case, I'd kill Fred!" he joked.

One more memorable moment of the interview was when infamously homophobic cast member Artie Lange talked about what he'd do if his son came out as gay. "I joke around about this stuff a lot and talk about it in my act, but I'm being dead honest right now," said Lange. "If my son ever did that (told him he was gay), the first thing I would do would be to give him a hug and tell him there was no way I have a problem with this and I love you."

For Stern fans, this was the most shocking part of the interview...

  42. Ang Lee is again teaming with Focus Features CEO James Schamus to direct the gay-themed Woodstock memoir "Taking Woodstock."

Focus will produce and Schamus will adapt Elliot Tiber's 2007 book, "Taking Woodstock: A True Story of a Riot, a Concert, and a Life":

"Before there was a Woodstock Concert, there was Elliot Tiber working to make a go of his parents' upstate New York hotel, the El Monaco. It wasn't easy. The Jewish clientele who had returned to the Catskills year after year had discovered Florida, and the upstate hotel business was dying.
Tosave his family's livelihood, Elliot put on plays, musicals, and local festivals. In the process, Elliot became the area's official issuer of event permits–not that anybody else wanted that position. Elliot even worked weekends as an interior design artist in New York City, all in the hopes of helping his family.

Inthe summer of 1969, Elliot Tiber's life changed in a way he never could have foreseen. Greenwich Village had become the mecca for gays in America. There, Elliot had socialized with the likes of Truman Capote, Tennessee Williams, Andy Warhol, and a talented young photographer named Robert Mapplethorpe, and yet had managed to keep his gay life a secret from his family. Then on Friday, June 27, Elliot walked into the Stonewall Innand witnessed the riot that would galvanize the gay movement in the United States. And on July 17, when Elliot read that the Woodstock Concert promoters had lost their license to stage the show in Wallkill, he called to offer his help in finding a new venue. In the days that followed, Elliot found himself swept up in a vortex that would change his life forever.

Theevents that unfolded during that hot New York summer have come to be recognized as major turning points in our cultural history. Few, however, have enjoyed Elliot Tiber's unique view of those events. Taking Woodstock is the funny, touching, and true story of the man who enabled Woodstock to take place. It is also the personal story of one man who took stock of his life, his lifestyle, and his future. In short, Taking Woodstock is like no history of Woodstock you have ever read."

  52. James Caan exits movie over cookie controversy

NEW YORK (Hollywood Reporter) - James Caan has left the political comedy "Nailed" after a dispute led him to storm off the set, and it all seems to have centered on a cookie.

The trouble started last Wednesday on the first of Caan's two days of shooting the role of a U.S. speaker of the house who chokes to death on a cookie. Director David O. Russell asked him to cough as he choked, but Caan argued that the character couldn't cough and choke to death at the same time.

Russell suggested that they shoot it both ways, but the veteran "Godfather" actor expressed distrust that his version would be considered and left the South Carolina set. A spokesman for Caan wouldn't confirm or deny the specifics of what happened but said with a laugh that there were creative differences and the departure was amicable.

Producer Douglas Wick said the discussion was "part of an ongoing creative conversation between the actor and director" and that Russell has behaved professionally throughout the shoot.

Caan's part is being recast. The shoot began April 15.

"Nailed" stars Jake Gyllenhaal, Jessica Biel, James Marsden, Catherine Keener, Tracy Morgan and Olivia Crocicchia in the tale of a woman who gets a nail lodged in her head and travels to Washington to fight for better health care.

Russell has a reputation for on-set battles. He had well-documented differences with George Clooney (in which the two came to blows on the set of "Three Kings") and Lily Tomlin (in heated verbal exchanges on the set of "I Heart Huckabees" as seen last year on YouTube).

Jake Gyllenhaal Suffers David O. Russell Induced Breakdown At LAX

While running through LAX yesterday, temperamental star Jake Gyllenhaal made a call to both his manager and agent to complain about the size of the airport. Gyllenhaal felt that the airport was too big and that more airports should have a downhome feel like John Wayne does. Gyllenhaal then complained that the security officer who helped the actor through the airport spent too much time asking him how his flight was and not enough fending off the paparazzi. Gyllenhaal then demanded that his agents set up a meeting with Diablo Cody, mainly because he wanted to see how long it would take for him to get her naked. Gyllenhaal then paused for a moment to catch his breath and, when he did, he finally came to his senses and fell directly to the floor. Once on the floor, Gyllenhaal rested in a fetal position and whispered into his phone: "I can't do work with David O. Russell anymore. I can't. I want Fincher back. I want to do take after take for ten hours straight."

  56. Caan's cookie monster antics disrupt film shoot

James Caan has reportedly quit the set of David O Russell's new film following an argument about how best to choke on a cookie.
Nailed is a political comedy about a woman who travels to Washington to fight for better healthcare after she gets a nail lodged in her head. It stars Jake Gyllenhaal, Jessical Biel, James Marsden and Catherine Keener.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, the veteran Godfather actor was hired to play the US speaker of the House of Representatives, and had only just started on the first of his two days of shooting. The script called for Caan's character to choke to death on a biscuit. But when directed by Russell to cough as he choked, Caan reportedly refused, arguing that it was impossible to cough and simultaneously choke to death. Despite Russell's suggestion that they shoot the scene both ways, Caan apparently walked off the set.

Caan's publicist has insisted that the departure was amicable, while producer Douglas Wick has already stepped in to defend Russell's behaviour on the set, which only began on April 15, as thoroughly professional. However, film fans will remember Russell's turbulent track record. He and George Clooney reportedly had an altercation on Three Kings and YouTube records for posterity the name-calling that occurred between him and Lily Tomlin during the filming of I Heart Huckabees.

  60. David O. Russell Will Not Stop Until He Insults & Attacks Everyone In Hollywood

Noted lunatic director David O. Russell has pissed off another actor. Allegedly, you can now add James Caan to the growing list of people Russell has alienated in the movie business. According to the New York Post Pop Wrap blog, James Caan has, for the first time in his acting career, walked off the set and quit the production of Russell’s next movie, “Nailed”. The reason cited for Caan’s departure is “creative differences”. You can read Defamers take on it here. They also talk about Jake Gyllenhaal acting like a diva on the set of the same movie.

David O. Russell has made a living so far of insane behavior. While directing the movie “Three Kings”, he reportedly got into a fistfight with George Clooney. Clooney pretty much confirmed that it really happened in a Playboy interview. Then, Russell is rumored to have attacked director Christopher Nolan at a party in Los Angeles. Allegedly, it was because Jude Law was going to leave the production of “I Heart Huckabees” to star in Nolan’s “The Prestige”. Lastly, you have the Lily Tomlin incident in which Russell called her probably the most foul word in the English language. You can watch that clip over here. Thanks to Mr. David “All Class” O. Russell, that clip is definitely not safe for work.

So the final tally so far for David O. Russell is George Clooney, Christopher Nolan, Lily Tomlin, and James Caan. Gee, it’s a good thing they are all hacks huh Dave? Those people aren’t that talented at all.

'Root out gays in our schools'

SCHOOL students could soon be spied on under a campaign to stamp out homosexuality, under demands made by MPs yesterday. Parliament also demanded that the Interior Ministry stop granting any residence permits to foreign homosexuals.

Any already here should be deported as soon as they are detected, MPs said at parliament's weekly session. MPs also called for regular inspections to root out homosexuals at massage parlours, health clubs and hair salons. It also called for monitoring in schools and for pupils who veer towards homosexuality to be punished. They voted in favour of an Al Menbar bloc proposal to oblige the government to prepare a study to determine how widespread homosexuality is in Bahrain.

The proposal has been studied by the foreign affairs, defence and national security committee, which recommended it. Committee members also included their own demands, which they want the government to fulfil. Amongst these are obliging the Industry and Commerce Ministry to monitor massage and hair salons to ensure that they have no closed rooms and that violators be prosecuted.

The committee is also demanding that the Education Ministry carefully monitor students and punishes those veering towards homosexuality. MPs urged the ministry to raise awareness amongst students, possibly through lectures given by visiting health specialists, psychiatrists, or sociologists.

Committee secretary and Al Menbar MP Shaikh Mohammed Khalid Mohammed said that people were complaining about homosexuals entering the country to work in massage or hair salons. "Those people are either from the Philippines or Thailand and they come for these two jobs, which they use as a curtain for their homosexual behaviour and immorality," he said.

  63. Star Jones Finally Divorces Younger, Gayer Husband

The rumors about Al Reynolds sexuality have dogged him and Star Jones since before they even got married, and now it’s all over. There’s no telling if Al’s rumored extracurricular activities are what caused Star to finally file for divorce a month ago, but who are we kidding? Here’s what she said to Entertainment Tonight:

“Several years ago I made an error in judgment by inviting the media into the most intimate area of my life. A month ago I filed for divorce. The dissolution of a marriage is a difficult time in anyone’s life that requires privacy with one’s thoughts… I have committed myself to handling this situation with dignity and grace and look forward to emerging from this period as a stronger and wiser woman.”

This statement is filled with good advice for publicity hungry celebrities (I’m talkin’ to you, Eva Longoria-Parker) — if you don’t want the press to cover your possible future divorce, you shouldn’t invite them all to the wedding.

HBO Picks Up Milch Cop Show

Landing his third drama pilot at the network n five years, HBO has picked up David Milch’s Last of the Ninth. After exploring the worlds of the western (Deadwood) and surf culture (John from Cincinnati), the new show will return Milch to his NYPD Blue roots. The drama will be set in 1972 New York.

“It is about an older detective’s mentoring of a young detective returned from Vietnam in a department fiscally crippled, under attack by revolutionaries, and which has been brought by allegations of systemic corruption into public disrepute,” Milch said.

Milch co-wrote the show alongside his fellow NYPD Blue executive producer Bill Clark, who was a former New York homicide detective. The duo wrote the pilot before the writers strike and will executive produce the show after the strike is settled.

This is the first development from Milch’s new development deal with HBO, of which he signed this past August.

Heath Ledger’s former fiancee, Michelle Williams, claims she is being haunted by the tragic actor’s ghost.

Williams told friends that Heath, who died aged 28 of an accidental drug overdose in January, had twice visited her as a “shadowy apparition”.

The first time, she was woken at night after hearing furniture move. In another “visitation”, she said the ‘Brokeback Mountain’ star apologized to her for not being there to help raise their two-year-old daughter, Matilda.

Williams, 27, claimed the hauntings helped her grieve.

In town filming I Love You Phillip Morris, based on the true story of a Texan convict who fell in love with his celly, Jim Carrey, Ewan McGregor and Rodrigo Santoro were spotted doing some field research at Edison Farrow's Martini Tuesdays party at Halo, the gay bar off Lincoln Road, where they were hanging out at a table, drinking champagne (water for Carrey). Said McGregor, "Jim's character is a con artist and an escape artist, who escapes from prison to be with me. It's an incredible story."

If you live here on South Beach that story is more typical than incredible, but we'll take it.

  83. Method Acting?

The Miami Herald had a report this morning that highlighted the night of Jim Carrey, Ewan McGregor, and Rodrigo Santo who were spotted at Halo which is a gay bar in Miami. The trio are in town filming a movie about a guy who falls in love with his jail cellmate. True story by the way. This could have been research. As you probably know, gay bars are filled with men who have been jailed and fell in love with their cellmate, or jail turned them gay, or gays want to go to jail so they can be with their own kind, or any other stereotype which comes to mind.

Honestly, when I first read it I thought the boys had discovered what I already knew. Gay bars are the best place to pick up girls. Yes they are. You see, gay guys have lots of straight female friends. They go out, and generally go to a gay bar rather than a straight bar. Girl sees nothing but guy after guy after guy, and realizes none of them want him. Perhaps the bartenders are earning tips by wearing next to nothing. Then along comes 400 pounds of fun. Hell at that point, they will jump on anything straight. OK, so this only happened to me once, but honestly, the story has been good for 20 years.

What made me realize that something was amiss was the fact that McGregor and Santoro spent the entire night drinking champagne. Hip hop videos aside. No guys go out with other guys and order champagne. The champagne of beers, Miller maybe, but not just champagne. You would lose your man badge right there for that one. Now, Jim did just drink water, so no conclusions can be drawn to that. Well, actually I could, but they would take us down a long and winding road. So, guys only night is drinking champagne ok? When your significant other comes home from poker, and you ask him what he drank, does he say,"champagne." OMG, Bob had a lovely Krug Clos du Mesnil that was to die for while we watched porn and played Hold Em.

JAKE GYLLENHAAL - GYLLENHAAL PLANS RESTAURANT VENTURE

Closet chef JAKE GYLLENHAAL is developing a new organic restaurant venture with top cook CHRIS FISCHER.

Sources claim the movie star once promised himself he'd open a top-end eatery if his acting career took off by the time he was 30. He's 27.

And Gyllenhaal, who has made regular appearances on top chef Mario Batali's hit U.S. cookery show Molto Mario, is getting serious about cooking up a restaurant.

A pals tells America's Life + Style magazine that Gyllenhaal and pal Fischer are looking at real estate in Los Angeles - with a view to opening their own place.
The insider says, "Cooking is his (Gyllenhaal) big hobby and his passion." Reports suggest Gyllenhaal is even planning a summer vacation cycling tour of food-lovers mecca Tuscany, Italy with his girlfriend Reese Witherspoon - to seek inspiration for his new restaurant.

He'll be the latest in a long line of Hollywood stars who have opened restaurants - Morgan Freeman, Sandra Bullock, Jeri Ryan, Ashton Kutcher and Tara Reid are just some of the celebrities who have tasted success as restaurateurs.

Today thousands of students across America will take part in a 'Day of Silence'. The National Day of Silence is a day in which students take a vow of silence to bring attention the bullying that LGBT students, teachers and other staff face in schools across the US. The National Day of Silence is coordinated nationally by the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network (GLSEN).

An estimated 500,000 students from nearly 5,000 junior and high schools in all 50 US states and Puerto Rico have participated in the National Day of Silence in past years and more than 6,000 schools have registered this year.

This year the 'Day of Silence' will take on special significance because of the murder of Lawrence King on 12th February 2008.

Lawrence, who was fifteen at the time of his death, was shot in the head by another student, allegedly because of his sexual orientation and because he sometimes wore feminine clothing.

One of those participating is Adam Sutton, best known as the friend of Heath Ledger.

After reading the script for Brokeback Mountain, Heath reportedly talked with Sutton about life as a closeted Aussie cowboy (Sutton is now out) and he even visited Heath while they shot the movie.

Kevin says he thinks the gay community can do a better job of supporting Adam and asked me to help spread the word. As for Adam, he says:

I hope to get a lot of support from the gay community because I want to represent the community as best I can. Also, I've decided to do the walk in my mate Heath Ledger’s honour and to donate the money I raise for the appeal in Heath's name. Anyone who was touched by Heath's life looking for a way to honour his memory, here is one small way to do it and I know he'd be rapt.

Neil Patrick Harris On Being Gay

Doogie Howser is my homeboy. How I Met Your Mother's Neil Patrick Harris went on Howard Stern and talked about everything. And I mean everything. Apparently, he's known he liked boys since he was 13, is a switch hitter (meaning he tops and bottoms), doesn't believe in open relationships (boring!), and thinks Perez Hilton is a complete douche for spending so much time on trying to out him last year. Ok, he didn't say "complete douche" but it's Perez Hilton, douchery is implied.

Harris was on Stern's Sirius radio show and told Howard that he knew he was definitely gay when he wasn't into Ben Stiller's wife Christine Taylor's body. He was dating her when he was a teenager.

"She's like the coolest, nicest chick ever. She's an absolute catch, and I thought if I'm not going to feel the super sparks with her, than it probably means that I'm gay," he said. Harris told Stern that he'd been with between 12-15 women before he was definite on the queer. You tell Stern EVERYTHING. I'm surprised there's not a rectal exam.

Stern asked Harris if he'd ever confronted Perez Hilton for outing him, and Harris was kinda/sorta not willing to answer it. I hope this queen got evil and sent him a Jenny Craig package or something.

"Well it's a tricky subject because people decide they want to be out in the open whether in a public forum or in their family at their own time. But Perez is from a generation that feels like (being out) is a non-issue. It's offensive to him when people don't declare that, because in his world, it's always been a part of who he is," he said.

Doogie also told Howard that he's "versatile." Harris has been in a relationship with actor David Burtka for four years, and apparently they like to switch it up. For my straight readers, that means you take and receive, depending on mood and hemorrhoid status. Ok, I didn't just say that. Alright, I totally did but I'm back in Boston and I think I have that jet lag thing and I couldn't sleep well last night and it might be affecting my tact.

Just how serious is Jake Gyllenhaal and Reese Witherspoon's relationship?

"I just think he loves her," Gyllenhaal's producer pal Ryan Kavanaugh told PEOPLE at the 23rd Annual "Salute to Youth" dinner in Los Angeles on Thursday.

Kavanaugh produced the actor's upcoming film, Brothers, which he calls a "passion project."

"[Jake] has obviously had his fair share of dating," Kavanaugh says of Gyllenhaal's romantic life. "I think eventually you come to a place where you know what you want and seeing what we saw on the set, he was certainly completely devoted to her and really loves her."

Over the course of the film, the producer really got to know Gyllenhaal, 27. "He's awesome," says Kavanaugh. "He's a true artist and a really good guy. We used to workout every morning before going on the set so he became a good friend, too."

Jake Gyllenhaal is supposedly opening up a restaurant. Click here for more details.

Needless to say, this will do nothing to dispel those maybe gaybe rumours.

Still… for some Jakey’s culinary interests illustrate yet again that he’s not a typical Hollywood party punk. That he likes staying at home with Reese Witherspoon and her kids. That he will cook and clean and walk the dog and NOT stay out til all hours of the night with his boys and walk around at the beach in beater tanks with his carb face hanging out. More importantly, Jakey isn’t a cheater, unlike that cheese dick she used to be married to.

Call me Cruise, even though they certainly do pimp out their love when it helps to sell a movie, but in the case of Jake and Reese… I totally believe. Call me Cruise…

  164. Michelle Williams stars in first movie since Heath Ledger's death

Michelle Williams is back on screen, just three months after ex-boyfriend Heath Ledger, the father of her daughter, was found dead in his SoHo apartment.

Her new film, "Deception," opens in theaters on Friday, April 25. It also stars Hugh Jackman and Ewan McGregor.

In the movie, Williams plays S, a sexy singer/songwriter, who seduces McGregor's character, Jonathan, a Manhattan corporate auditor so immersed in his business, he has no time for pleasure. That all changes after he meets Wyatt, played by Jackman, who introduces him to a mysterious sex club. Soon Jonathan finds himself the prime suspect in a woman's disappearance and a multi-million dollar heist.

Part thriller, part murder mystery, part fight club, Williams has never looked better in her role as a sexy temptress. First widely acclaimed for her role as Jen Lindley in the teen series, "Dawson's Creek," she also stared in the films "Dick," "Prozac Nation," "The Hottest State," and "Brokeback Mountain," which also earned her an Oscar nomination and a relationship with Ledger.

Williams recently spoke about Ledger for the first time since his death, telling Interview magazine in their April issue, "He had uncontrollable energy. He buzzed - his mind was turning, turning, turning - always turning."

Ledger's cause of death was determined to be an accidental overdose of painkillers, sleeping pills, anti-anxiety medications and other prescription drugs, according to the New York City medical examiner's office in February.

Bret Easton Ellis is sooo over being a famous writer whose novels get made into movies

I failed to mention in my previous post, the two book-related interviews in the current issue of V. First, Bret Easton Ellis chats with pal T. Cole Rachel to promote his film-adaptation for The Informers, set to release in October of this year. The cast includes Kim Basinger, Winona Ryder, Mickey Rourke, Mary-Kate Olsen, Billy Bob Thornton and the late Brad Renfro, which already seems like a strange amalgam no? The inclusion of Renfro (who died earlier this year of an accidental heroin overdose) seems disturbingly apropos for a BEE project though. Rachel put it best when he says that Ellis’ work makes the unsettling statement that “we are fucked.” A collected of losely intertwined short stories, The Informers, was first published in 1994.
    ...

On film adaptations of his books (which he didn’t adapt):

As well-made as American Psycho is, I don’t think it really did that. I just think that American Psycho is an un-adaptable book that was turned into a perfectly serviceable movie.

On the current film adaptation of The Informers (which he adapted):

It is, by far, the most expensive film adaptation that’s ever been done for one of my novels and from what I’ve seen it’s the most beautiful looking.

On what the story is about (my fav quote in this piece):

The movie is really about the end of the ‘70’s and the beginning of the ‘80’s. It’s about that moment when we realized that everything the ‘70’s had been about was going to be wiped away—by AIDS, by drugs, by Reagan-era politics. It’s about that moment when this cultural shift took place and everything suddenly felt completely different.

  190. AMERICAN INFORMER

BRET EASTON ELLIS MAY BE THE MOST CONTROVERSIAL, UPSETTING, DANGEROUS, AND CRITICALLY DISREGARDED WRITER IN AMERICAN LITERATURE. HE MAY ALSO PROVE TO BE ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT. AS HE WRAPS UP WORK ON THE FILM ADAPTATION OF THE INFORMERS, HE TALKS ABOUT THE MANY LIVES OF HIS BOOKS

At the time of its publication in 1994, Bret Easton ElIis’s The Informers was a polarizing topic in the literary world. As has been the case with all of the 44-year-old writer`s books, the story collection seemed to engender glowing, it somewhat reluctant, admiration or vehement disdain. Most of the time, it was the disdain that won out. The thirteen loosely interwoven stories of desperation, decadence, and general despair in early ‘80s Los Angeles proved too nihilistic - and perhaps too prescient - for many critics. Despite having been deemed "empty writing about empty lives" by Kirkus or, even less kindly, “as cynical, shallow, and stupid as the people it depicts" by The New York Times` Michiko Kakutani, The Informers has, over the years, continued to attract its own cultish fan base. While the book is certainly not as celebrated (or reviled) as Ellis‘s other best-sellers - 1985's Less Than Zero, 1991's American Psycho, and 1998's Glamorama - The Informers is arguably one of his masterpieces. Buried under the spare, almost mercilessly sharp prose lays a very genuine sadness and, even more overlooked, a wicked sense of humor. Ellis is much more than a master stylist. His best work makes a very clear statement about what it means to be human, even if that statement is a generally unsettling one: we are fucked.

It's not surprising then that The Informers is the next book in Ellis's back catalog to be given the Hollywood film treatment. Directed by Gregor Jordan, the film‘s ensemble cast includes Kim Basinger, Winona Ryder, Mickey Rourke, Mary-Kate Olsen and Billy Bob Thornton. While the author has remained largely disconnected from previous film adaptations, he's served as a screenwriter here to help bring one of his most seemingly un-filmable books to the big screen. Maybe it has taken a decade for the ironies of Ellis‘s work to become clear to us. (T. Cole Rachel)

    T. COLE RACHEL: One of the first questions that people must always ask you is what you think about the movies that have been made from your books.
BRET EASTON ELLIS: Yes. It’s weird. When I'm writing, I'm not thinking of the books as movies, I‘m thinking of them as purely literary experiences. When I‘m writing a screenplay it's obviously very different. So, I find the idea of adapting my own work for the screen - or seeing it adapted—very disorienting. There are always problems.

    TCR: Such as?
BEE: Well, I remember that the people who wanted to do Less Than Zero were caught in a regime change at the studio where the movie was being done. There were a lot of conflicting ideas by everyone involved about exactly how that book should be made into a film. The end result was a very compromised film that was much different than it had originally been envisioned. That movie was also very affected by the times in which it was made. There was no independent cinema then, which is where a movie like that should have gone rather than become a huge, glossy 20th Century Fox production. Also, there are no scenes from the book that are actually in the movie. It’s totally different. Saying that, however, I see that movie late at night sometimes on cable and I actually have a lot of fondness for it. The cinematography is beautiful. It’s really one of the only movies of its kind that captures however tacky the youth culture of L.A. at that time. It’s the only movie l can think of that shows what L.A. was like at that moment, for better or worse.

TCR: Which of the film adaptations do you think most accurately captures your own sensibility?
BEE: The only one that really does it is The Rules of Attraction. It`s also the most divisive movie - not only among fans of my work but probably among fans of movies in general [laughs]. I watched it again recently and I think it`s kind of a marvelous adaptation.
Regardless of what Roger Avary kept from the book and what he threw out - and he kept a lot - it got the essence of the novel. As well-made as American Psycho is, I don't think it really did that. I just think that American Psycho is an un-adaptable book that was turned into a perfectly serviceable movie.

TCR: I know you‘ve done lots of screenwriting, but was The Informers the first time you took a shot at adapting your own work for the screen?
BEE: Not exactly. I did a version of The Rules of Attraction years ago. I did a draft of American Psycho for David Cronenberg when he was attached to direct it. Neither of those versions was ever used. The Informers is the first time that l did an adaptation of one of my books that was actually shot.

TCR: It seems like the least adaptable of all your work. There is a certain loose connectedness to the book, but ifs still essentially a collection of short stories.
BEE: Yeah. there is a kind of cohesiveness to it...you know, the stories get darker as you move through it, certain characters pop up again in later stories, or certain details about characters are revealed. But still, it doesn't easily lend itself to this kind of treatment. It was written when I was going through a very brief phase of writing short stories - which lasted about five years - and I was just interested in the form. I don`t think I've ever been interested in it since. I haven’t actually written a short story since 1986. What happened was that I had gotten stuck on Glamorama and I owed a book to Knopf. It became apparent that Glamorama was going to take a long time to finish, so my editor suggested that we do a book of stories. I looked at all the stories I'd written and I liked the L.A. stories the most. I arranged them in a way that they seemed to make the most sense - like the way a musician might arrange tracks on an album - and then it just felt like it worked.

TCR: So much of your most memorable work is set in L.A. and now you’re living there again alter nearly two decades in New York. Does the city still hold the same kind of creative sway over you?
BEE: It's funny. I'm not really sure that it ever did. My work tends to be about wherever I am at the moment, it kind of goes where I go. L.A. just happened to be where I was most of the time. I was writing Less Than Zero when I was in college and it was about college students. I spent half of my time in L.A., half in Vermont. A lot of Less Than Zero comes from the two novels I wrote when I was in high school. I wrote about L.A. because that's where I lived and that's what I knew. The same goes for Rules of Attraction. American Psycho was written when I moved to New York. Glamorama was the result of traveling around Europe so much.
Lunar Park was written mostly in Los Angeles, but that book isn’t so much about the suburbs or a particular place as it is about getting older. The book I‘m writing now is set in Los Angeles, out it`s not so much about the city itself.

TCR: You‘ve been very involved with the production of The Informers - from working with the director, Gregor Jordan, to visiting the set and talking to the actors about their roles. Has this experience changed your perspective on what it means to make movies?
BEE: Completely and totally. You know, it was always boring for me to begin with. When I as a kid I knew people whose parents made television shows and movies. I went to a school where most of my friend’s parents worked in the entertainment industry. So it wasn't unusual alter school to go visit a set because someone's dad was Michael Landon and they were shooting Little House on the Prairie. It's kind of horrible to say, but at an early age you become very jaded about stuff like that because you understand how completely boring and tedious it is most of the time. I was on the set of American Psycho a couple of times – boring, did not want to be there – and once it was actually by accident. I walked down the street and literally stumbled across the film crew who was shooting near my apartment. With Informers there were a couple of times when the actors requested dialogue revisions, so I came down to the set to do that. But, you know, for whatever reason, perhaps my age, it doesn`t really excite me. However, there was a moment on Informers when I watched these four young actors shoot a very complicated scene and totally nail it every time. I realized how much better they actually made the scene and it was exciting to see the thing just come to life. That's when you realize that making movies is truly a collaborative experience, while screenwriting isn't. As a screenwriter you're giving them a map - a compass - and the rest is up to everyone else.

TCR: Capturing the look of the early '80s is actually much harder than people probably think. There’s a fine line between looking authentic and beautiful and lust having it look like a bed episode of Dynasty.
BEE: Exactly. This movie really needed to have an almost Antonioni-esque sheen to it in order to work and they really went all out to achieve that. It is, by far, the most expensive film adaptation that’s ever been done for one of my novels and from what I‘ve seen, it’s the most beautiful looking. We talked at length about how the people would dress. This book takes place in 1983, so it was just before things got really tacky. Armani was very big at the time and all the guys I knew would wear a lot of streamlined Italian clothes. The mullet hadn't appeared yet, nor had shoulder pads. Girls hadn`t gone insane with their hair yet in terms of giant perms or whatever. It's just before that all started to happen. We looked at a movie like The Garden of the Finzi-Continis, even though that movie is actually set in the 1930s, for an idea of how these young people should look. We also wanted to capture the kind of laid-back, So-Cal glamour that kids I knew growing up were into. We weren't making Fast Times at Ridgemont High. We didn't want to make a parody of 1983. The movie is really about the end of the '70s and the beginning of the `80s. It's about that moment when we realized that everything the '70s had been about was going to be wiped away - by AIDS, by drugs, by Reagan-era politics. It's about that moment when this cultural shift took place and everything suddenly felt completely different.
