  6. Annapurna has teamed with Janicza Bravo, the writer and director behind the forthcoming Zola, to write and direct a series adaptation of Ian Parker’s New Yorker article A Suspense Novelist’s Trail of Deceptions, which has Jake Gyllenhaal attached to star.

Published in February 2019, Parker’s story explores the complex life of former book editor Dan Mallory, whose debut psychological thriller, The Woman in the Window, written under the pseudonym A.J. Finn, was number one on the New York Times Bestseller list, the first debut novel to do so in twelve years.

The series will follow an unreliable narrator who nurses brain tumors he does not have and mourns family members who are not dead while preying on people’s sympathy to get away with almost anything. Bravo will co-write the pilot with Brian Savelson.

Bravo serves as an executive producer alongside Gyllenhaal and Riva Marker for Nine Stories as well as Annapurna’s Megan Ellison, Sue Naegle, Sammy Scher, and Susan Goldberg. Savelson and Parker are co-executive producers.

“What may have started out as my dog ate homework turns into my mother died of cancers, my brother took his life and I have a double doctorate,” said Bravo. “Our protagonist is white, male and pathological. There is a void in him and he fills it by duping people. He’s a scammer. The series examines white identity and how we as an audience participate in making room for this behavior. Getting to partner with Annapurna and Nine Stories is a gift and I am most thrilled for what lies ahead.”

  7. Jake’s original shirt was designed by Russ & Daughters and tie-dyed by Simon Golby. The shirt sports the blue logo of the iconic 106-year old Manhattan smoked fish shop and it’s tie-dyed, naturally, in salmon pink. It’s available on Russ & Daughters’ website with free shipping courtesy of Goldbelly, the service that delivers hometown specialties around the country. All the proceeds from sales of the shirt will go to the coalition, a grassroots group of chefs and restaurateurs fighting for federal restaurant relief.

  10. Jake Gyllenhaal: Chadwick’s strength and goodness and honesty burned in his eyes. We only spent a handful of hours together, but anyone that crossed paths with him on or off screen knows what I mean: he was rare. The genuine article. His bravery is a lesson to us all. Rest In Peace, Mr. Boseman. You will be deeply missed. instagram.com/p/CEfKmbHHHPf/

AUSTIN NICHOLS: A wise one once said, “The good ones get to go home early.” Heartbroken over this. What an incredible man!

  23. TruTV’s hit comedy series Tacoma FD is coming back for a third go-round. The network has ordered a 13-episode third season of the series from co-creators and stars Kevin Heffernan and Steve Lemme.

The series’ second season, which returned earlier this year, has seen season-over-season ratings growth, according to the network and Nielsen, to date reaching 11 million viewers.

Tacoma FD is a half-hour comedy set in a firehouse in one of America’s rainiest cities. The firefighters keep themselves entertained with creative competitions, friendly first responder rivalries and no shortage of bizarre emergency calls. Chief Terry McConky (Heffernan) and Captain Eddie Penisi (Lemme) lead the firehouse antics and are joined by an eclectic crew played by Eugene Cordero (Andy), Marcus Henderson (Granny), Gabriel Hogan (Ike), and Hassie Harrison (Lucy).

    EPISODE 45 - JAKE GYLLENHAAL - Actor

Team Deakins had the opportunity to sit and talk with long time friend, actor Jake Gyllenhal for this episode. Jake speaks about his relationship with directors and with cinematographers. We speak about his work in Donnie Darko and Prisoners, as well as Jarhead and Wildlife. He speaks about how, as an actor, the final result is always in other people’s hands. He also shares how important the collaboration between actor and cinematographer is and the importance of creating a “safe place” for the actor in front of the camera. Although we were hoping he would explain the end of the movie Enemy (and he said he would!), we finished the episode without knowing any more! And we also got into the craft of building sand castles! A really fun conversation that gave us an insight into the world of an actor! Don’t miss it!

RECOMMENDED EPISODE VIEWING: Donnie Darko, Jarhead

  27. Netflix period drama The Devil All the Time costars Robert Pattinson, Sebastian Stan, and Riley Keough, among others.

Spider-Man: Far From Home costars Tom Holland and Jake Gyllenhaal like to act like they're best buds. But, if they're really so friendly, how come Holland didn't know that Gyllenhaal was one of the producers on Netflix's period drama The Devil All the Time, whose stars include Robert Pattinson, Sebastian Stan, and one Thomas Stanley Holland?

"Yeah, funny story," Holland told EW in July. "When Jake and I were working together on Spidey 2, he was asking me what I was going to do next. I pitched him this movie and he was like, 'Wait a minute, I’m producing that movie.' And I was like, Well, I’m in that movie.' I guess someone had like messed up in the email and didn't tell us that each of us were part of the film."

The Devil All the Time details the lives of a particularly ill-fated Ohio-dwelling clan in the years after World War II. The film also stars Bill Skarsgard, Riley Keough, Jason Clarke, Haley Bennett, Eliza Scanlen, Harry Melling, and Mia Wasikowska, and is directed by Simon Killer and Christine filmmaker Antonio Campos.

"I met Antonio probably about two years before we started production," said Holland. "We went for a coffee, and I’d seen his film Christine and I was a massive fan of that, and I remember just saying to my agent, 'When this guy is going into production on something I’d love to get a look at the script, and if there’s a role for me, I’d love to get an audition.'"

Holland plays Arvin Russell, the troubled son of Skarsgard's military veteran.

"He is an angry kid," he says. "As an actor, I’m always looking for things to challenge me. I’m always looking for characters that are different and diverse and unique. I’m also looking for a director who I think can put me in a position I haven’t been in before. So, I guess for me it was the challenge of doing a different accent, playing the rural class kid, a period film, a new director. Everything ticked the boxes for me."
