She made her name in a drama about sadomasochism – and broke the mould again as a porn director in The Deuce. But it’s her hotly debated new film that might prove to be her most transgressive yet

Still, it is clearly food for thought, and, after we have moved on to another topic, she abruptly shifts back to the subject at the forefront of her mind. “I’m sorry … I’m still thinking about your last question,” she says. “I’m thinking about putting something difficult on the table and looking at the ways that people respond to it. I wonder what it would mean to have [Jimmy’s race] be more explicit – to be more of a part of the actual storytelling.”
You suspect she’ll be mulling it over for some time because that’s what she tends to do. Recently, she has had to do a lot of thinking about The Deuce, or more specifically James Franco’s role in it. During the hiatus between the drama’s first and second seasons, Franco – who plays twin brothers – was accused by a number of women of sexual misconduct at his New York acting school. (Franco denies the allegations.) There were calls for him to be removed from the show, particularly given that its subject matter concerns the abuse and exploitation of women. Yet, when the second season aired last autumn, Franco still had a starring role.
Gyllenhaal, who has been a prominent figure in the #TimesUp movement against sexual harassment and abuse, says that her thinking on Franco’s role in the Deuce “changes all the time”. She says that show’s producers checked with the female members of the cast and crew to make sure that they were comfortable working with him, and no concerns were raised. She believes that “there have to be consequences for disrespecting women sexually, or at all”, but feels that cancelling the series – as some speculated the show’s network HBO would do – would have sent the wrong message.
“The show is about misogyny and inequality in the entertainment business,” she says. “And I feel that there are all of these fascinating women telling these stories that illuminate exactly what is on the table in terms of feminism at the moment. That would have felt misguided and confused to me.”
Because, even in 2019, it is still an uphill task getting these stories made by and about women on to our screens. Gyllenhaal points to the production for The Kindergarten Teacher, a gruelling five-week shoot on a shoestring that at one point saw her “changing my clothes between scenes in the bathroom on the Staten Island ferry”.
“On one level I feel like: OK we were this group of women, of course we never expected to have enough money to make the movie,” she says. “So we just were, like: ‘On with it! Let’s make it work.’ And I feel very proud of that. And on another level, I think: ‘Why don’t we have enough money? We just needed a little more!’ And I do think that has something to do with a kind of inequality that we’ve just gotten used to.”
After all, she adds: “Nobody should ever be naked in the bathroom on the Staten Island ferry if you can help it.”

Velvet Buzzsaw is fun. Jake Gyllenhaal is great. I like the jab at the Art establishment. And I love John Malkovich. Actually the whole cast is pretty entertaining and spins their characters so lovingly.

It was an honor to see Tom Sturridge and @jakegyllenhaal performed in Sea Wall / A Life at @publictheaterny last night. Both showed incredibly powerful and vulnerable performances. Not kidding when I said I got chills at the very end. These two men were such articulate storytellers that I not only got to experience their character’s stories, but the stories about the people in their character’s lives. As an actor your job is to be a storyteller. Tom Sturridge and Jake Gyllenhall did just that. They told a story about life’s greatest gifts and tragedies that everyone experiences in life. Phenomenal. Wow. ❤️

I can believe that these two are gay and very likely experimented sexually with each other when they were younger but I find it really hard to believe that they are currently in a relationship with kids (LOL). From what I see on IG and FB they are still good friends but that's it.
Austin is so deeply closeted and insecure about his sexuality, he will never come out. I have friends of his on FB and over the years I have seen enough pics and vids of him, and stuff from when he was younger, to convince me that he is bisexual at the least. He has a lot more chemistry with men than any of his girlfriends. The chemistry comes from his girlfriends. Body language speaks volumes.
He has convinced himself that he loves women (for a simpler life), and he will end up marrying one and having kids... probably with Hassie.
I think that the rumors about him and Jake have tramutized him for life and they will never be seen in public together again. The Christmas party was private so it doesn't count. He was seen, December 2018, at Jake's gym with Jake's trainer, and he has been seen there before. The gym is pretty private and is used mostly by celebrities. Like I said, from what I've seen they are still good friends but I'm sure it's just that... good friends.
Without a doubt, Jake is gay. He hooks up with women in public but most likely sees men in private. Celebrity gay men stick to their close friendship group, people they trust not to 'out' them. He has been saying for the last 10 years that he wants to settle down and have kids. Now he is dating a trashy 22 year old model. Young models are well known for dating actors for PR... and Jake has dated many young models. Older women are less likely to beard because there is a good chance that they are married, maybe with kids, and are too busy and mature to bother with that stuff but young models are desperate for publicity.

No, not family. I was thinking more about his acting. He isn't that famous and it seems that he wants to further his acting career. Many actors who have 'come out' have said that it has negatively affected their career. Their roles dry up, or they are typecast, lose fans... There are lots of good articles about how homophobia still exsists if you're an actor. Agents make actors sign contracts to say they're straight.
On the other hand... maybe he isn't gay and is just extremely effeminate. Sometimes it is hard to tell the difference. He gives me gay vibes but he does seem fond of Hassie so I have no idea.
Side note, I noticed that Hassie and Chloe were friends before Hassie started dating Austin. When they got together Chloe stopped following them on IG. You can see that she was friends with Hassie from posts on her instagram... Hassie has liked and commented on them while Chloe was still with Austin. Would love to know what happened but guess we will never know.

The same person posted it on Hassie's IG too but Hassie deleted it. Interesting. Apparently Hassie and Austin met when they started filming The Iron Orchard. Maybe Chloe went to the set and that is how Hassie met her. Hassie seems like a huge flirt on IG so wouldn't be surprised if she was offline. Maybe that person is right. With Jake, there is too much evidence pointing towards him being gay, or at the very least... bisexual with a strong preference towards men. The rumors go back to when he went to college. He is up there with Tom Cruise and John Travolta... so many rumors that there has to be some truth to it. He could get married and have kids and I will still believe that he is gay. No matter how many women he hooks up with in public, or PR relationships, he is probably seeing men in private.
We don't really know enough about Austin to make a judgement. He isn't in the public eye a lot. From everything I have seen and read about the two of them I believe that they did have something together, whether sexually or serious, but I'm leaning towards Austin being either bicurious or bisexual with a strong preference towards women. I don't get the impression that he is fully straight but I think he does prefer women.
