I went to visit the set and Ethan, who was 22, was so incredibly nice to me. He took me on a walk. I got a huge crush on him as did everyone else at the time. And then he moved into the apartment above our garage when he made “Reality Bites.” I’ve recently reconnected with him, and it’s interesting how something like that goes away.
I’ll never get rid of: my wedding dress that Dries Van Noten designed, and also the dress he made that I wore to the Oscars when I was nominated [in 2010, for “Crazy Heart”]. For a long time, I kept the Prada shoes I wore to the premiere of “Secretary” in 2002, which I’d bought at the store myself. But I gave them away a few years ago. I don’t really think that memories are held inside of things, though maybe they are for a little while.

ReplyDeleteChristine and Simon Killer director Antonio Campos has set up his next film just in time to be a hot Toronto sales package. Tom Holland, Robert Pattinson, Mia Wasikowska, Chris Evans and Tracy Letts are in talks to star in The Devil All the Time. The pic is an adaptation of Donald Ray Pollock’s 2011 novel that Campos and Paulo Campos penned. Antonio Campos will direct. The film will be produced by Randall Poster, and Jake Gyllenhaal and Riva Marker of Ninestories Productions. Production is set to get underway in February 2019.
The novel’s plot: In a place called Knockemstiff, Ohio, a forgotten backwoods of this country – a storm of faith, violence and redemption brews. Out of desperation to save his dying wife, our protagonist Willard Russell turns to prayer which succumbs to sacrifice. His son Arvin (Holland) is growing from a kid bullied at school into a man who knows when to take action. The cast of characters includes a serial killer couple, a faith-testing preacher and a corrupt local sheriff (Evans) in a story told across two decades.
The Devil All the Time now joins other film projects on the burner for Campos, who has signed on to rewrite and direct the Fox Searchlight horror film Splitfoot, and is aboard to direct a prequel to The Omen for 20th Century Fox.
Campos is coming off last year’s critical hit Christine, and has been busy on the TV side of late, directing and executive producing USA’s The Sinner starring Jessica Biel. As a producer, his credits include Martha Macy May Marlene, James White, The Eyes of My Mother and Piercing.
Endeavor Content is raising the financing and will broker distribution.

ReplyDeletePatrick Melrose Emmy nominee Edward Berger has been set to direct Rio, the Steven Knight-penned psychological thriller that’s in advanced development from Studiocanal, SunnyMarch and Nine Stories. This is the project that I told you about last year with Benedict Cumberbatch and Jake Gyllenhaal being courted to star. Their attachments are now confirmed and they will also produce.
Studiocanal is fully financing and has international sales on the film which Cumberbatch and Adam Ackland are producing under their SunnyMarch banner. Gyllenhaal and Riva Marker are producing via their Nine Stories.
Rio, from the mind of Peaky Blinders, Taboo and Locke‘s Knight, centers on two old friends who meet again in the titular city. One is a journalist, the other a hugely successful financier. Plot details are under wraps, although there is also a strong female lead character.
Gyllenhaal and Marker call Berger’s work “superb” and say they’re “thrilled to be collaborating with him, Studiocanal and SunnyMarch — an undeniably talented group of filmmakers.”

When Jake Gyllenhaal wanted to open shop in New York City with his production company, Nine Stories, he tapped a childhood friend to design an unconventional office. Interior designer Ariel Ashe, who along with partner Reinaldo Leandro has designed spaces for Liev Schreiber and Naomi Watts, and Seth Meyers (her sister, Alexi Ashe, is Meyers’s wife), has a long history with the actor-producer: the pair met as teenagers while vacationing on Martha’s Vineyard.
“He’s actually very funny. He did the best impression of a velociraptor when we were kids,” she tells Architectural Digest in the October issue. And while his place of business is inarguably refined, it pays tribute to the more light-hearted side of the Oscar nominee’s personality, too.
“Jake’s office feels very serious, but there are a few humorous moments and lots of personal memorabilia to inspire him.” Posters for his films, including 2015’s Demolition, and 2005’s Brokeback Mountain, hang in the screening room.
The film, TV and theater production company the actor founded with business partner Riva Marker is housed in a SoHo apartment building, and feels more like a home than a high-powered show biz office. “We wanted to have a sense of play in the design,” Gyllenhaal tells AD. “It’s a place where filmmakers and artists can feel empowered to be open, inventive, and collaborative.”

Tout cela était très nouveau pour moi et très impressionnant. Électrisant, même. Le tournage pouvait être dur, mais le matin j’étais incroyablement content de les retrouver.

Maggie Gyllenhaal is stepping behind the camera for her directorial debut with an adaptation of a dramatic Elena Ferrante novel, she told TheWrap Saturday at its studio at the Toronto Film Festival.
ReplyDeleteGyllenhaal — who stars on HBO’s show “The Deuce” about the rise of porn in New York City — says she was inspired to direct her first film thanks to her character, a call girl turned adult film director named Candy.
“Playing Candy on ‘The Deuce,’ who becomes a director — and, in part, becomes a director in the storytelling because that was something that was important to me — inspired me to direct myself,” Gyllenhaal told TheWrap.
“When I was starting out, if you were a lover of movies and somebody who was a storyteller — at least for me — I was like ‘Yeah, I’m an actress, and I’m going to put my storytelling and my ideas and my thoughts into my projects through my acting,'” she continued. “It’s only pretty recently that I’ve felt that I’ve sort of broken down a wall in myself where I kind of went, ‘No, I think I’d like to direct.”
Although Gyllenhaal doesn’t say which of Ferrante’s novels she’s working to adapt, the Italian author is best known for her Neapolitan novels, a four-part series following the lives of two girls, Elena Greco and Raffaella Cerullo, from childhood to adulthood and old age. The series includes “My Brilliant Friend,” “The Story of a New Name,” “Those Who Leave and Those Who Stay” and “The Story of the Lost Child.”

ReplyDeleteBarry Jenkins’s adaptation of If Beale Street Could Talk got an early helping hand from a surprising source: Jake Gyllenhaal?! Jenkins told the Los Angeles Times about the process of getting approval from James Baldwin’s (notoriously selective) estate to adapt the novel, and said the actor was “kind of one of the reasons this happened.” Gyllenhaal, who Jenkins describes as “a big Baldwin fan,” was already in conversations with Baldwin’s estate about another project.

And then I just happened to write them a letter, literally, the next day,” Jenkins told the Times. He’d reached out to the estate about adapting Baldwin’s novel well before Moonlight or his Best Adapted Screenplay Oscar.
“A woman at the estate — not Baldwin’s sister Gloria Karefa-Smart, who runs it — but the woman who runs all the official documentation, she said, ‘Well, I felt kinda bad because we were listening to Jake Gyllenhaal and we don’t ever want to be the kind of estate that only listens to famous people’ — I was nobody at the time — ‘so when your package came through, we were like, ‘We might as well listen to this guy named Barry Jenkins.’” (For what it’s worth: Gyllenhaal also had a helping hand in making the new Halloween happen.)
