A new documentary from Jake Gyllenhaal and Jamie Lee Curtis captures the fearless vision of photographer Chris Hondros, who was killed in Libya in 2011.
ReplyDeleteDo whatever it takes to get the shot. That, in essence, was the motto of Chris Hondros, the war photographer who died six years ago this month while covering the Libyan civil war. He is also the subject of the new documentary, Hondros, produced by Jake Gyllenhaal and Jamie Lee Curtis, and premiering this week at the Tribeca Film Festival.
Appearing in this exclusive clip is Greg Campbell, the film’s director, who chronicles the life and work of his lifelong friend, who died alongside British photojournalist and Vanity Fair contributor Tim Hetherington. The two were killed in a mortar attack while documenting rebel fighters on Tripoli Street in Misurata.
Chris Hondros, throughout his 12-year career, captured both the horrors and humanity on the front lines in Liberia, Angola, Afghanistan, Sierra Leone, Kosovo, and elsewhere. Many of his images shed light on the realities of the ordeal of civilians caught in conflict’s crossfire. Perhaps his most resonant photo captured the shock and grief of Samar Hassan, an Iraqi girl who lost her parents when patrolling U.S. soldiers opened fire on their family’s car in Tal Afar.
Actress Jamie Lee Curtis, herself an accomplished photographer, believes that the lessons of Hondros are all the more significant in an age when truth is often elusive. “It’s a story of the harrowing parts of war, the beautiful stories of humanity that come from war stories, and the gruesome, cold, truthful aspects of war,” says Curtis, who launched a Kickstarter campaign in support of the film and later introduced close friend Gyllenhaal to the project, eventually enlisting him as an executive producer.
As much as the film depicts the realities of war, it is also a testament to Hondros’s character. Campbell creates an intimate, honest portrait of a man determined to not only share images of conflict that might change viewers’ attitudes, but to also help improve the plight of the very people he compassionately captured on film. “There will always be humanity amidst absolute carnage and chaos and brutality. If we don’t believe that, then we’re lost,” Curtis insists. “[The] message that comes from someone who puts [himself] on the line to tell the truth is that humanity has to win. Every time.”

ReplyDeleteYou can tell this video was purposely made - it wasn't a pap spying or being intrusive. At around 2:57, you can see the older man asking the guys if they're ready and then says "let's go" and that's when he, Jake and Austin all take off together for the car.
The 1D fandom is kind of getting what Jaustin fans have experienced because they are going on over a year of those guys not being together. But at least they all have social media and are on television and whatnot.
It's astounding really, that Jake and Austin are a couple who are together, but they have not been photo'd together (that we know of) since 2012.
That is what you call a deep, deep closet. It's very poignant.

Early 2012 was kind of a surreal, magical time for anyone following Jake and Austin. The period lasted about a month and a half with several tweet sightings of them together, the sushi lunch, the Berlinale Film Festival, and then there was the time that Jake put his big rancher pants on and drove Austin's truck.
OH, you were unaware this happened? Well, let's revisit. In pictures dated January 18, 2012 (same date as the sushi lunch photos were said to have taken place)....
Well, it's a Toyota, but it's not the Camry, which Jake used to be seen driving. And it's not either of the Q7's....hmmm.....
I daresay.....we've seen that truck before.....
Shit I love trucks. They are useful. But not for just driving around the city. All clean. For work. For gettin dirty. For haulin stuff. -

Well, it was quite impromptu, nothing planned (like in a bathroom stall or anything). Box-office deliverer S2 and his latest gal--for the moment, I assure you--just wanted to share a scream or 15 in the ballroom, that's all. So what if other folks crashed their sweaty party?
Toothy Tile, on the other orgasmic hand, does mind. Or maybe not? Hmmm.
As any reader of this filthy column knows damn well by now, our boy Tooth--much like Seymour, above--likes taking chances. He does it in the parking garages of Hell-Ay's more bourgeois shopping centers. On restaurant balconies--hell, wherever there's a chance of getting caught.
Just like he did last weekend. Parking lot right off the Strip. T.T. and his b-f (for whom, I'm told, Toothy has considered very heavily coming out of the proverbial media closet) were "hard-core" doing the diddly, say their concerned amigos.
Only problem was, a security cop called the real coppers, who hand-slapped T.T. something good. Alas, somebody's somebody called the head somebody at the police station, and the whole thing got covered up--just like most of the fun stuff does in this ass-greasing enclave.
So, don't expect Mr. T. to bare his bisexual soul anytime soon. I hear his relationship with the same-sex partner is suddenly not quite as gung-ho as it has been for months previous. Toothy got so friggin' scared he's edging back in the closet. And--you guessed it--the opposite-sex ex is soothing Tile's bruised psyche.
Hey, don't sweat it, Tooth. I once did it on the Long Island Railroad with my then beach boy, and the conductor happened by. Oops. Didn't ask for my ticket, funny enough.

“I feel like Gwyneth Paltrow,” Chloe wrote as a caption on a photo of herself. She added, “It hurts. I hope the clay pulls off my wispy mustache hairs… I bet Gwyneth doesn’t have mustache hair.”
Austin went shirtless to get the clay treatment and rubbed it all over his chest as well. “He took it too far,” Chloe captioned a photo of him.

They've been close friends for a number of years. And Jake Gyllenhaal put on a cosy display with Greta Caruso as they enjoyed a night out with pals in New York on Sunday night.
ReplyDeleteThe actor, 36, was spotted giving his long-time friend an embrace after spending the evening together. Jake was also joined on the night out by British actress Alice Eve, as well as another female pal.
Greta, who is the daughter of CSI: Miami star David Caruso and Total Recall actress Rachel Ticotin, has been a friend of Jake for many years. The pair, who were first spotted hanging out together in 2006, were seen enjoying a holiday together in St Barts in January.
They have previously been spotted in other exotic locations, including Amalfi, Italy, last year.
The hunky actor has been keeping busy as he has six film projects on the horizon including Stronger, which is due to be released later this year. Jake plays Jeff Bauman in the film, a victim of the Boston Marathon bombing who helps police track down the killers while recovering from the trauma of the event. He was also promoting documentary Hondros, which he produced with Jamie Lee Curtis, at the Tribeca Film Festival on Friday.

EXCLUSIVE: Chloe Bennet and social media star Logan Paul have been cast in MGM’s musical remake Valley Girl, along with Better Call Saul‘s Jessie Ennis and Ashleigh Murray (Riverdale). The group join topliners Jessica Rothe and Josh Whitehouse in the pic with Rachel Lee Goldenberg at the helm. Written by Amy Lee Talkington, with revisions by Marti Noxon., production is slated to begin in LA next month.
ReplyDeleteThe adaptation to the 1983 original follows Julie (Rothe), a sweet-natured San Fernando Valley girl whose world and values are rocked when she falls hard for Randy (Whitehouse), a punk rocker from Hollywood.
Matt Smith is producing and Cassidy Lange is overseeing the project on behalf of the studio.
Bennet, currently starring in ABC’s Agents Of SHIELD, will play Karen, a Queen bee, Valley girl who’s obsessed with status and overcompensates for her lack of charisma by ruling the school with an iron fist. Paul, known for YouTube’s Foursome and The Thinning, plays Mickey a preppy, popular, tennis star and Julie’s boyfriend.
Ennis, whose upcoming film slate includes The House and Life Of The Party, will co-star as Stacey, Julie’s loyal best friend since childhood who dresses and talks like a Valley Girl, but is an anxious straight A-student who feels insecure in the popular crowd. Murray, currently starring as the frontwoman of Josie and the Pussycats on CW’s Riverdale, will play Loryn, a high-energy, spacey and boy-crazy popular girl.
Bennet is repped by CAA, Fewlas Entertainment and McKuin Frankel Whitehead LLP, Ennis is repped by UTA and Underground Films, Paul is with CAA, Jeff Levin and Hansen Jacobson, and Murray is repped by Innovative Artists and Jago Ciro Entertainment.

We filmed it for the Lincoln Center Archives a few days ago, and last night they filmed a really high-quality version with six cameras. These beautiful cinematic cameras came in to film. So if they want B-roll, it seems like there’s a good chance they’ll want to move it some place.

The dust had barely settled from the Sushi Lunch in January of 2012, when February became another car on the Jaustin Train of "Can You Believe It?!!!"
We knew that Jake was going to be a judge at the Berlinale Film Festival in Germany which was scheduled to take place from Thursday, February 9 through Sunday, February 19.
But, here he is looking rather solitary in London back on February 1. While in London, Jake was photographed working on his music video and dining out. For the most part he was pretty much hidden for public view.
So to recap, Jake was in London from February 1st through the 7th, but three days later on the 10th this smile producing, but not completely unexpected celebrity sighting occurred at Heathrow:

And since Austin was identified and called out on social media by Dana Delany, perhaps the guys figured well, what the heck, the cat's out of the bag now. And we were privileged to some spectacular shots of our fave twosome partaking in some of the more behind the scenes social events at the Berlinale Film Festival.
This video was taken at the U.S. Embassy in Berlin on February 11th. It was the prestigious President's Reception; not just some free-beer-nuts-and-stale-pretzels-at-the-hotel-bar soiree, but a suit and tie reception, the kind of event which would seem to be for Festival notables like Jake and his special plus-one. Oops! I mean guest. Otherwise, that would have been one heckuva party crashing maneuver on Austin's part.

ReplyDeleteBless him, he still looks so tired, I bet he´s not 100% recovered yet.
As much as I loved to see him in Sunday twice more, I was shocked to see him so worn out. And I don´t only mean physically. I heard he had been ill and pulled through, but he also seemed emotionally exhausted when I saw him at the stage door (funnily I went there for someone else, but I won´t complain about having seen Jake!).
I was so close to saying he should go home and get some proper rest, it really almost escaped me. I could just about stop myself because I have no right to say something like this. But a look in his eyes really made me inwardly gasp in shock. I had seen him being tired before but not like this, this was something else.
To be honest, his insane schedule worries me atm. He works a lot and I´m worried it might just be too much, at least at the moment. I really want to enjoy his work for a long time to come but I´d rather see less of him for a while but know he takes good care of himself. My hope is that since he really seems to have good friends and a family who cares that they keep a close eye on him and look after him.
