I highlighted my two word clues, of which there were two. 1) The word "erm" (another derivative would be "eh"), a term you receive quite often when someone is snarking at you on a blog or in a Tumblr ask and can be translated to: "you dumbass". 2) the phrase "random headcanon". From Wiktionary: defined as "Elements and interpretations of a fictional universe accepted by an individual fan, but not found within or supported by the official canon".
This twitter conversation seemed like a total set-up to me. How did I stumble upon it? By simply searching "Jake Gyllenhaal" on twitter. Notice none of their other tweets contained his name, except for this one: "did the fact Jake Gyllenhaal and Heath Ledger went home and banged their gfs". See that? That's what you call a simple "het" plant. A little bit of subliminal social media nonsense. Over the years, Jake's search has been salt and peppered with these whether by word or by picture. With this particular conversation, it took no time at all to flush them out. :-)

Oh there was a really sweet little girl with her mother on set yesterday, and her mom was holding her, and she had such a sweet face and was holding a lollipop and I took her picture. I know that doesn't sound ideal, it's not that cool, but I think it's cool.
I also took a picture of "Skip to My Lou" Because that's the name of my character when I was in the dressing room at Jimmy Fallon, there was a vintage book, so I took a picture of it. I thought it was fate. I also by mistake took a video of it in slo-mo. Of a book, on a shelf. I'm still learning to use my phone. But you'd be surprised at how entertaining a book sitting on a shelf in slo-mo could be.

ReplyDeleteLook at the picture: the parents and the kids are looking adoringly at Jake. He wasn't a random man. He was the lead actor, and the parents with their kids were part of a scene with him. A tender, emotional scene at the end of Demolition, in the memory of his wife who lost a baby.
The girl that Jake shared the scene with is no "ordinary" kid, she has Down Syndrome. Obviously he was moved to film with special need kids and that's why he took the picture.
You all jumped to an iffy conclusion from a line taken out of context and twisted it into something ugly.

Q: Right, you’ve been described as, “the best weirdo in the business.” I think what people mean is that you are very vulnerable and exposed on screen, and I think that terrifies people.
ReplyDeleteJake: I just don’t want to mislead anyone about who I am, or who I want to be. I want to portray characters that actually exist in the real world. I find it scarier when you see a world that is shiny and clean and where everyone’s clothes look perfect. A lot of people say to me, “man you do things that are so dark, why can’t you just do a romantic comedy?” But I look at those films in the same way they look at the work I’m doing. To me that’s just as dark.
Q: It’s so important to have the darkness and other alienating feelings. I remember seeing Donnie Darko almost 15 years ago now, after it had just come out and remember thinking, “What just happened?” It’s important to feel that stuff, do you know what I mean?
Jake: Absolutely. And also I think that movie is really funny. It’s definitely dark, but it’s even called Donnie Darko, it’s meant to be humorous. I think it’s really fun to watch and also scary at times. But I’m interested in that. I don’t subscribe to the belief that if you play characters that exist in a darker place that it somehow means there’s something wrong. I love my life. I think the world is a really beautiful place.
Q: Are you still meditating every day?
Jake: I try. I am not successful all the time, but I try.
Q: You’ve said before that “every journey starts with fear.” I know that it plays a role in some of your films like Nightcrawler, Donnie Darko, Southpaw. What are you personally fearful of?
Jake: Many things. I think we’re living in a particularly scary time. But I’m Jewish so I have a tendency towards anxiety.
With my work, no matter how much time and preparation I’ve had, I’m always scared. But I know what a privilege it is to do the job that I do. I know how amazing it is to be able to choose the work that I do.
There’s also a fear of intimacy and genuine connection. When you’re old enough, and if you’ve been hurt and have hurt people, you start to walk into every situation thinking, “Shit, how do I stay aware of my own faults?” We all have expectations. I have very high expectations and that sends me to places that are probably not always the best. That’s why it was such a wonderful thing to work with Jean-Marc. He literally doesn’t have any expectations of what the project is going to be like. He creates an environment to allow whatever is happening, really actually happening, to just happen. So that was a big lesson for me. And as a result the movie has become what it was supposed to be.

Thanks for all my Birthday wishes. I have had a lovely day breakfast with my parents and a day out with Andrew to find BFG jars in London. We found 19 out of 40 they where very well hidden and poor Andrew is shattered traipsing after me all day. On the up side we bumped in to Jake Gyllenhaal, Paul Gascoigne's wife and son (apparently) and I think I walked into an episode of The Apprentice. So I may have missed the gym but got a good walk and lots of lovely presents and cash which means new trainers and PT sessions are a go for September. For my character, I thought about having a secret that could threaten to destroy your world, something that with these guys was so shameful, but so necessary to their reality they couldn’t deny it. It’s almost like grass shooting through a sidewalk —our nature comes through.
Q: Heath and Jake’s characters enjoy a lengthy courtship before they ever get involved physically, but you have one tiny, brief window of opportunity on a park bench to seduce Jake.
A: Before that scene happens, there's a scene in the dance where we kind of lock eyes at one point and he goes off and dances with my wife [Anna Faris]. And even just in that moment, you’re right — there is so much that has to be unsaid. I mean, the first thing he talks about is how his wife won’t shut up. These guys are so trapped —and they both sense that in each other. They feel that they can be understood.
Q: At the time, did you all realize that it was destined to become an LGBT classic love story?
A: I remember when we were making it that there were a lot of late-night talk shows making jokes about it. Which I wasn’t really keen on. People underestimated it. When I read the script and when we were shooting, I thought that it was very special and that the world would really appreciate it. And I was right. It’s a movie I am very proud of.
Q: In Strangers Things, your characters tries to save a gay kid from a faceless monster who wants to kill him. Does this storyline have any metaphorical significance for you?
A: I love that interpretation. I’m not gay, but my understanding of it is that being gay, you feel like a freak. You've adopted this idea of queer as a culture. And I definitely understand feeling different, feeling alone, feeling like a nerd, so I have a lot of empathy. And I love the journey of being able to protect someone who feels different and alone and to embrace them and have them be included — to save them and to bring them into the fold is a wonderful thing that a human being can do.

If you follow Austin Nichols at all on Twitter or Instagram, it would be quite difficult to miss his "fondness" for the beard's two canine pets, Arthur and Wally. Photo mementos of him with the two dogs adorn not only his social media, but their owner's, Bennett. Interestingly, we rarely saw him with Sophia Bush's dogs, if at all. I think there was one photo op at an airport where her dogs were seen.
Could be a preference of pose, wouldn't you say?

I WAS WATCHING THE OPENING CEREMONY OF THE VENICE FILM FESTIVAL, AND THEY SHOWED LITTLE CLIPS OF ALL THE FILMS, INCLUDING NOCTURNAL ANIMALS, AND IT LOOKED GREAT! IT DIDN'T HAVE JAKE, BUT IT STILL MADE ME EVEN MORE EXCITED FOR THE TRAILER. HOPEFULLY ON FRIDAY!?

‘Nocturnal Animals’: Amy Adams Has a Scary Ex-Husband In Tom Ford’s Intriguing New Thriller
ReplyDeleteSecrets — even long-buried ones, the best kind — have a way of revealing themselves in Tom Ford’s films. Though the fashion designer is only on his second feature, the Amy Adams- and Jake Gyllenhaal-starring thriller “Nocturnal Animals,” the blossoming filmmaker has already established his own sense of tone, and it’s one that traffics in the unseen and perhaps nefarious.
The Venice Film Festival has now offered up a quick look at “Animals,” featuring a somewhat unnerved Adams revealing the meaning behind the film’s title — kind of — as she tells a coworker about her possibly scary ex-husband (played by Gyllenhaal), who has recently come back into her life via a book he’s penned, titled, you guessed it, “Nocturnal Animals.”
Despite the clip’s snappy runtime, Adams effectively telegraphs a sense of unease that will likely snake its way through the entire film, while also delivering the unshakable feeling that there’s something not quite right about Gyllenhaal’s character and his literary pursuits. Check out the clip below.
The film will next screen at this month’s Toronto International Film Festival. It will be released on December 9.

ReplyDeleteThe performances here are consistently superb, from Adams and Gyllenhaal (playing two very different roles) to Michael Shannon (as a Texas lawman), Laura Linney (getting an unforgettable scene as Susan’s mother, a monstrous Manhattan society matron) and Karl Glusman (“Love,” “The Neon Demon”) as one of the kidnappers. The real standout is Taylor-Johnson.
ReplyDeleteThe somewhat enigmatic ending of the film annoyed some of the people around me at the press screening — and I confess I’ll probably need to sit with it for a while to fully understand what Ford was going for with it — but “Nocturnal Animals” packs a real punch and confirms that “A Single Man” was no fluke.

... Gyllenhaal’s performance goes to a place of real terror and despair, and when the movie flashes back, he, along with Adams, seems possessed of a younger, more vital spirit. “Nocturnal Animals” is on some level a cautionary tale about the false gods that can lead one to make the wrong choices.
ReplyDeleteIt must be said that there are other refined movies that have gone to these places before. The granddaddy of them is “Blue Velvet,” that great postmodern Hitchcock noir that turned pulp sensation into a surrealist high. Then there was “In the Bedroom,” which may have been the most refined revenge thriller ever made; it was like a Bronson movie made by Merchant-Ivory. “Nocturnal Animals” isn’t as good as those films, yet it seizes and holds you — with its suspense, and its vision. It leaves no doubt as to Tom Ford’s fervor and originality as a director, and it leaves you hoping that he’ll make his next film before another seven years passes by.

ReplyDeleteThe film marks a change of pace for star Jake Gyllenhaal, who revealed that Ford identified very closely with the emotionally fragile Edward. “When I was sent the screenplay,” Gyllenhaal recalled, “I had just played a few characters that were all very physical and all about responding physically and emotionally – being able to protect and having the capability of protecting their people they loved. So I couldn’t have gotten this script at a better time. When I had sort of worn that other road out, here comes a guy who doesn’t know how to do that – he only has a bloody, beating heart.
“It was not easy to film those scenes, to just let people take your family away from you. It was a difficult week of shooting, with constant questioning of Tom, who kept saying, ‘No, you’re just gonna stand there and take the hits.’ It was frustrating. But wonderfully frustrating.”
Reactions on the Lido were mixed, but Ford will probably be fine with that. “Maybe I’m old fashioned,” he said, “but I think there needs to be – I don’t really like the word moral – a moral to the story. You need to think about it. Things can be entertaining, but if you leave the theater and it doesn’t stay with you, doesn’t haunt you, doesn’t challenge you, then it’s not successful, for me. So I hope to make films that make one think.”
