  1. Q: There's a scene in Demolition in which your character tells a teenager that he should probably stay closeted until after high school. What did you think about that advice?

Jake Gyllenhaal: I mean I personally love that scene. It's interesting to me, in takeaways, it's sometimes hard to differentiate between a writer's opinion and a character's opinion. It's as if the writer should be talking through a character, but I feel like when you know a character, there is a sort of…there's not a full sensitivity from my character in the majority of the movie. It sort of begins to open up when he meets Judah's character, but in terms of that scene, what I love about it is that there is no judgment in the conversation.

    Q: That was important.

Jake Gyllenhaal: I think there is the opportunity to be pretty preachy, but I think the intention, behaviorally, is that there's this young boy, obviously dealing with his sexual identity and his identity in general. And there's an older man who's dealing with his identity. Both of them are in a crisis in one way or another, and you know, the advice that he gives him is basically, like, 'Okay, that's cool. You're gay, that's fine. Just make sure you know that it's gonna be kind of brutal.' Because that is the truth. I just love that the scene is without judgment. I think that is going far beyond what most people today and movies today are saying.

  2. Q: I think people want you to be a conventional leading man because you look like one, and then you inhabit these characters that are apathetic or are on the spectrum or have crazy issues, and it's a hard thing to reconcile. Is that something you think about?

Jake: Well, that's sweet of you to say. People say to me a lot, 'Why don't you just go do a romantic comedy? Do a fun movie.' I'm down with having fun, by the way, but I find, sometimes, those movies to be more perverse than the movies that I make. I happen to be a very happy, loving person. But I think, with regard to what people consider to be a 'movie star,' I don't know if it has anything to do with what's on the outside. I think some of it does, but I think the people and the actors that I have respected for many years have cultivated a craft.

There are many people doing many things that are popular for many different reasons—or not for many different reasons—and ultimately the people I respect are the people who are true to who they actually are. That's what I try and do as much as I can. I often fail at it, but I just keep trying.

Jake Gyllenhaal Tears Up Screen With Another Acting Triumph

Gyllenhaal is simply superb in every way, again proving he is one of the smartest actors around in terms of finding challenging material and then swinging for the fences. Watts is nicely low key and complements him well, while Cooper is still one of the most reliable performers there is. Lewis, in his feature film debut, is definitely one to watch as he poignantly navigates the role of a young man trying to define himself against unimaginable peer pressure. The script by Bryan Sipe resists the temptation to provide easy answers for any of these characters. If at one point it nearly falls prey to melodrama, it ultimately heads in unexpected directions. Don’t expect a pat ending either; this is the stuff of life.

  37. Jake Gyllenhaal Training Heavily for Boston Marathon Bombing Movie StrongerApril 02, 2016 3:49 am

    04/01/2016 AT 03:35 PM EDT

Jake Gyllenhaal is serious about his workouts.

The Demolition star has been hitting the gym big time in Boston, where he's currently prepping for his role as Boston Marathon bombing survivor Jeff Bauman in Stronger, the film based on Bauman's memoir.

On Friday morning, the actor hit up Jamaica Pond, a popular spot for workouts, in Boston's Jamaica Plain neighborhood. Gyllenhaal and his trainer were spotted exercising around the 68-acre kettle pond, which is part of the famed Emerald Necklace park and running trail.

Dressed in running shorts and a backwards hat, Gyllenhaal followed the instructions of his trainer, who was wearing an official Boston Marathon jacket.

"He looked skinny," said onlooker Randi Whitcomb, who was also catching a morning workout at the park. "He's in training mode."

But that's just part of Gyllenhaal's current workout regimen. He's frequently been spotted heading to SoulCycle in the Back Bay neighborhood for early morning classes. A fellow SoulCycler who had just finished his class on Thursday spotted Jake at the front desk talking quietly with the staffers. Wearing a hat pulled down low, Gyllenhaal was escorted into the room just as his class was about to start.

"A staffer quietly took him inside the dark studio and got him set up on a bike like anybody who normally would be late for a class," said the SoulCycler. "Except in this case it seems like it was a late guidance because he's Jake Gyllenhaal, late on purpose."

Jake isn't just taking his role seriously on-screen. He's also serving as an honorary co-captain of Boston Medical Center's 2016 Boston Marathon team along with with Bauman, who was treated at the hospital in 2013. Bauman went on to author his book, and welcomed a baby girl named Nora with his wife back in 2014.

Gyllenhaal has spent significant time in the Boston area meeting with several bombing survivors, and touring the area hospitals where many of them were treated.

  39. Tatiana Maslany on Jake Gyllenhaal, SXSW, and Orphan Black season four secretsApril 02, 2016 5:50 am

Tatiana Maslany may be fresh off her third Canadian Screen Award win and an Emmy nomination for her work in Orphan Black, but she “can't wait to get in the ring” with the “awesome” Jake Gyllenhaal in her upcoming film, Stronger.

The film is set to start shooting on Apr. 4, and David Gordon Green of All the Real Girls and Pineapple Express fame will step in to direct.

“I’m just excited to be a part of something like that,” said Maslany.

  54. Jake Gyllenhaal destroyed this woman’s homeApril 03, 2016 11:03 am

When the residents of Pebble Lane in Roslyn Heights, Nassau County, saw construction workers on Sharon Yarom Gucker’s front lawn, they assumed she was remodeling.

Her nosy neighbors were partly right: A crew was adding a large section onto Gucker’s sleek home. But she and her three kids would not be living in it. In fact, the addition would be destroyed in just two months — by Jake Gyllenhaal.

In the film “Demolition,” out Friday, the actor plays an investment banker whose wife dies in a car accident. As a result, he goes mad and demolishes whole parts of his life, including his suburban dwelling.

Gucker’s home had been used for commercials before, but this is its first appearance in a film and the only time a director has asked to smash it to pieces.

“It’s a whole mix of emotions, especially when they’re destroying things,” says the 47-year-old agent. “Like, ‘I hope he only breaks the part that they built.’”

The wrecking wasn’t limited to the outside. Director Jean-Marc Vallรฉe (“Dallas Buyers Club”) also wanted to ruin Gucker’s kitchen.

“At first, they thought they would be able to replace part of my kitchen enough to destroy it. But the director wanted it totally destroyed,” she says.

Instead, the production built a whole new kitchen in her living room for Gyllenhaal to lay waste to with a sledgehammer.

The entire shoot took two months — a month beyond what was scheduled — and Gucker and her children were required to live in a nearby hotel during construction and filming. They still visited the set, though, where the boys fell in love with Gyllenhaal’s puggle, Boo Radley.

During filming, Gucker was in the process of selling the home — and she says that the A-list movie turned out to be a major draw for prospective buyers.

“I told them, ‘Jake Gyllenhaal was in this shower!’ ”

  88. Rapid Round: Jake Gyllenhaal Defends Sean Penn's Trip to Mexico ... (Q&A)

    4/5/2016

Q: You play the only American in the inner circle of the Colombian cartels in the upcoming The Man Who Made It Snow. What's the appeal?

A: It's about this Jewish kid, Max Mermelstein, who falls in love with this Colombian woman and, by proxy, ends up helping create the Colombian cartel in America. He probably had a tremendous amount of regrets for having done that. It's a guy who got himself into a situation, unknowingly, [though] I don't think anybody gets themselves into anything unknowingly.

Q: Didn't Sean Penn do that when he met with El Chapo?

A: Sean is conscientious. He's political, he's provocative, he's fascinating. It's why we love him. It's why he's an extraordinary actor and an extraordinary human. He's complicated, and he got himself involved in a complicated situation. But it's that type of courage that allows us to love the performances and the person. On a human level, it's pretty incredible. At the same time, I looked at the media [coverage] and went, "Whoa."

Q: You were going to make a movie about Lance Armstrong. What happened?

A: There was discussion of doing that, but I was actually just friends with Lance Armstrong, and there was never really a movie. A little bit of a discussion, maybe, but ultimately just a friendship.

Jake: Hollywood is full of massive contradictions. It's cutthroat in a lot of ways. But there is a real community, and there are a lot of kind people who are very sensitive. I like sensitive people. And hard work, like in every business, is always rewarded.

Q: What do you dislike the most?

Jake: How little credit the crew gets. And I'm not a big fan of ageism.

As though life is imitating art, actor and sex-symbol, Andy Whitfield, had just become a star as the lead in the hit television series,'Spartacus,' when he is faced with his biggest personal challenge - life-threatening cancer. 'Be Here Now' is a feature documentary that follows him on his dramatic journey to cure himself. Confirmed in matching affirmative tattoos, he and his charismatic wife and their two children, commit to taking Andy's healing into their own hands and living life fully, not in the shadows of the disease. Each step tests their limits and strength of character, while revealing their tenderness, humor and determination. And, as each person goes through their own transformations, the film becomes an inspiring and universal story of courage, love and resilience.

  109. Jake Gyllenhaal on Heath Ledger's Death: 'It Affected Me in Ways I Can't Put Into Words'April 07, 2016 6:57 am

    04/06/2016

Heath Ledger's death in 2008 sent shockwaves through many inside the Hollywood community, including Jake Gyllenhaal. The actor starred opposite Ledger in the 2005 film Brokeback Mountain, and says Ledger's death impacted both his personal and professional life.

"Personally, it affected me in ways I can't necessarily put in words or even would want to talk about publicly," Gyllenhaal, 35, told PEOPLE and Entertainment Weekly editorial director Jess Cagle about Ledger's death in the latest edition of The Jess Cagle Interview. "In terms of professionally, I think I was at an age where mortality was not always clear to me."

Gyllenhaal had just turned 27 when Ledger died from accidental prescription drug intoxication, and he had not lost a lot of friends up until that point.

"I think you live in this bubble, too, of making films ... There are real friends, and there is a real community," he said of the experience. "There is also that [new Macklemore song] where he says, 'The curtain closes and nobody notices' ... I think that's true, and I think that's okay. But I think at the time, I assumed everyone would notice – and they did with Heath dying, but I think it [gave me] the experience of, 'This is fleeting.' And none of the attention or synthesized love that comes from the success of a film really matters at all. What matters is the relationships you make when you make a film, and the people you learn from when you're preparing for a film. That changed a lot for me."

Brokeback Mountain served as a breakout moment for both Gyllenhaal and Ledger – each actor scored his first Oscar nomination for the film, and Ledger would begin a romantic relationship with costar Michelle Williams during its production.

"We were super young," Gyllenhaal said of making Brokeback Mountain, which also featured Anne Hathaway in a supporting role. "We had no idea what the movie was going to become."

Watch Gyllenhaal open up about making Brokeback Mountain, along with the full interview, in the video clips above.

  117. Demolition says so much about love, loss, and rebirth that it’s easy to forgive a few over-the-top moments. Director Jean-Marc Vallรฉe is so sincerely intent on delivering a heartfelt story that he even manages to rescue a few well-worn clichรฉs. When all is said and done, this is a brave film that isn’t afraid to be a little crazy.

What’s really interesting here is how many risks Demolition takes. At its best, it makes the audience walk a kind of emotional tightrope. It’s rare to see a movie that can pull off being so dangerous and so sentimental at the same time. But thanks largely to Jake Gyllenhaal, as a man forced to re-examine his life after his wife dies in a car accident, we’re left with a movie that’s as eccentric as it is satisfying.

  123. Review: In ‘Demolition,’ It’s Hammer Time for Jake GyllenhaalApril 08, 2016 8:38 am

    ...
Mr. Gyllenhaal’s strong performance still doesn’t add enough substance to a film that is hollow at the center. It’s mostly the fault of Mr. Sipe, who seems to believe that saying nothing is saying something.

“Demolition” is rated R (Under 17 requires accompanying parent or adult guardian) for sexual references and some drug use. Running time: 1 hour 40 minutes.

  128. 'LAWLESS RANGE': Four Stars (Out of Five)

A modern day western/crime thriller, about two Texan brothers; struggling to pay back a massive amount of debt, to some dangerous criminals. The movie was directed by Sean McGinly, and written by Adair Cole. It stars Patrick John Flueger, Austin Nichols, Daniella Alonso, Julianna Guill, Neil Brown Jr., Justin Arnold, Dale Dickey, Kris Kristofferson and Beau Bridges (who also executive produced the film). I found it to be a pretty entertaining, and well made, little western drama flick.

Sean Donnelly (Flueger) and Tommy Donnelly (Nichols) live in Texas. Sean has always been the good brother, and Tommy has always been the troubled 'bad brother'. Tommy drinks a lot, doesn't show up for work (where Sean is also employed), and is a bad father. Tommy really gets into a lot of trouble, when he ends up owing $6,000 to a criminal mechanic (Brown Jr.). Sean, once again, comes to his rescue; endangering both men, and their families.

I didn't have a lot of faith in this film, when I started watching it, because it's a low budget indie flick I had never heard of; that doesn't even have a full video release yet (it's not available on Netflix, or at Redbox). I paid $4.99 for an Amazon Instant Video rental of it, because the film costars Courtney Palm (my favorite actress); in an uncredited one scene cameo. She's fully naked in it, like she often is (in movies so far), but her performance is definitely too minimal to rave about. I like the film a lot anyway though.

It's just really well made, and the performances are all good. I was never bored, and it's just a lot better than I was expecting!

  145. DEMOLITION MAN: JAKE GYLLENHAAL IS THE TRUE SUPERHERO OF HIS ACTING GENERATIONApril 09, 2016 10:40 am

    ...
I’ve been wondering which of last decade’s young heartthrobs could mature into an actor who could sprout a beard and play flesh-and-blood men the way Harrison Ford used to do when he bothered. Right now, Gyllenhaal tops the heap. Ryan Gosling spends too much time pouting. The rest, from Chris Pine to Chris Hemsworth to Tom Hiddleston to Benedict Cumberbatch, got sucked into superhero roles with muscles that burst from their shirts whenever they try to play normal humans. It’s hard to make interesting adult indie films when you have to block out time for contracted sequels and world press tours. It’s hard to concentrate on craft after endless hours prepping CGI stunts and endless stress about whether the studio can make good on a $200 million budget.

But Gyllenhaal got over his blockbuster phase six years ago with the disastrous Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time. Now, he’s free to do something that’s hard to do in a super-suit: act. His recent string of small, smart films proves that the 35-year-old actor is thinking hard about who he wants to be. Gyllenhaal’s good films — Nightcrawler, End of Watch, and this one — teeter on greatness. Even his lesser movies — Enemy, Prisoners, Southpaw — are bold choices in which he’s fascinating even when the films themselves are flawed.

Can Gyllenhaal become the most important actor of his generation? He’s already thrown away the action-hero blueprint his peers are following. And with films like Demolition, we’re watching him build the new model of how to be a grown-up movie star.

  148. 5 Times Jake Gyllenhaal Should Have Been Nominated For An OscarApril 09, 2016 11:56 am

    Jarhead
While Donnie Darko was the first time audiences saw the true potential of Jake Gyllenhaal as a leading man, it wasn’t until 2005 where his prowess really came to the fore. After being overlooked for leading roles in Lord Of The Rings, Spider-Man, and Batman Begins, Jake Gyllenhaal was cast and then received critical acclaim for Jarhead, which was overseen by the Academy Award winning director Sam Mendes. What’s especially impressive about Gyllenhaal’s performance is just how restrained he is, as he allows the frustrations of the character to wallow rather than being forced down viewers’ throats. But while Jake Gyllenhaal might have been disappointed that his work in Jarhead wasn’t acknowledged, he could at least console himself with the fact that his Brokeback Mountain performance did actually earn him a Best Supporting Actor nomination. It’s just a travesty that’s still the only one he's received.

    Zodiac
It’s no secret that Jake Gyllenhaal didn’t particularly enjoy working on Zodiac. David Fincher’s prevalence for shooting as many takes as possible, even if that means doing close to a 100, infuriated the actor. Yet, despite these issues, and even though it’s clear that David Fincher is the one who expertly guides Zodiac through its beguiling puzzle of a plot, Jake Gyllenhaal excels. Like Jarhead, Jake Gyllenhaal grows into his role as Robert Graysmith the further you get into Zodiac’s 2 hour and 40 minute running time. Gyllenhaal elegantly and subtly goes from being naรฏve about the murders to darkly possessed about solving the case of the Zodiac killer. Released a week after the 79th Academy Awards, it was always a long shot that either Jake Gyllenhaal, Robert Downey Jr., or Mark Ruffalo would be nominated at the following year’s ceremony. But while No Country For Old Men’s Javier Bardem was a rightful winner, Gyllenhaal’s portrayal was just as rewarding as either Tom Wilkinson’s in Michael Clayton or Philip Seymour Hoffman’s in Charlie Wilson’s War.

    ReplyDelete
  149. Jacqueline Clit FarrugiaApril 09, 2016 12:06 pm

    Nightcrawler
The obvious and biggest indiscretion when it comes to Jake Gyllenhaal being acknowledged by the Academy occurred when they failed to nominate him for his performance as Leo Bloom. Previously recognizable because of his impressive physique and undeniable good looks, Jake Gyllenhaal made himself pale, gangly, bug-eyed and stick thin for Nightcrawler. He was also raw and intense as the charming but slimy Bloom, and not only did it instantly draw comparisons to the work of a young Robert De Niro, but it proved that Jake Gyllenhaal was much, much more than a pretty face. In fact, it immediately established Jake Gyllenhaal as one of the most interesting actors in American cinema. And in a very open Best Actor race that ultimately resulted in Eddie Redmayne winning the gong for The Theory Of Everything and Bradley Cooper and Steve Carell earning undeserved nominations, it’s impossible to understand why Jake Gyllenhaal wasn’t right up there in contention.

    End Of Watch
One of the best cop films of recent years, End Of Watch is an energetic blending of action and characterisation, with Jake Gyllenhaal and his co-star Michael Pena flourishing as they’re given the opportunity to play realistic police officers that have who deal with both gang members and their personal relationships. For the role, Jake Gyllenhaal underwent an extensive and intensive training ritual that resulted in him giving one of the most authentic police portrayals in years. Undoubtedly Jake Gyllenhaal’s best performance since 2005’s Brokeback Mountain, the actor was only overlooked because of a ridiculously strong Best Supporting Actor category that saw Alan Arkin (Argo), Robert De Niro (Silver Linings Playbook), Philip Seymour Hoffman (The Master), and Tommy Lee Jones (Lincoln) nominated, while Christoph Waltz went on to win the accolade for Django Unchained.

    Southpaw
While Southpaw is a film that has its fair share of problems, Jake Gyllenhaal manages to paper over the cracks with a towering performance. But while you can imagine that the actor probably knew there were issues with the film, he is nevertheless fully committed with his portrayal. Not only is Jake Gyllenhaal undeniably impressive to look at in the film, having taken months to carve out his muscular frame, he looks every inch the boxer in the ring, and is just as raw and powerful out of it, too.

  153. 'Stronger' movie with Jake Gyllenhaal filming in Braintree

    April 07, 2016

The producers of "Stronger" are set to shoot scenes for the movie over a two-week period in Braintree.

Jake Gyllenhaal stars in the film as Jeff Bauman, who lost his legs in the 2013 Boston Marathon bombing and helped lead investigators to one of the suspects.

"We're going to be little Hollywood for a couple of weeks," Mayor Joseph Sullivan told The Patriot Ledger.

Sullivan said shooting is planned in several locations around Braintree, but the mayor added he had few specifics on the filmmakers' plans.

"They are being tight-lipped about the schedule because they want to avoid a lot of publicity while they are in town," Sullivan said.

Gyllenhaal is producing the movie, which is based on Bauman's book. It is being directed by David Gordon Green ("Pineapple Express.") The film co-stars Tatiana Maslany, Clancy Brown and Miranda Richardson.
