Jake Gyllenhaal may not have children of his own, but his many fatherly roles have sure prepared him for the day he does.
In his newest film Demolition, which costars Naomi Watts, Gyllenhaal plays David Mitchell, a successful investment banker whose life begins to unravel after his wife is killed in a car accident. When Karen Moreno (Watts) and her son Chris (Judah Lewis) find a special connection with Mitchell, they help him rebuild the life he once knew and loved.
And seeing his onscreen connection with Lewis, Watts says the actor "should be a dad" in real life.
"Yes, he should be a dad at some point for sure!" Watts told PEOPLE recently at the Cinema Society premiere in New York City. "Jake was adorable with [Lewis]," she added. "In the dressing room, they were cute together; Jake teased him a lot, in a sweet way."
Outside of playing onscreen father figures, the actor has admitted to getting a little practice being an uncle to sister Maggie Gyllenhaal's daughters Ramona, 9, and Gloria Ray, 3.
"I think that being an uncle helps with everything," he said, smiling broadly when he asked if he enjoys that real-life role.

If there’s one thing we can learn from this astounding roll that Gyllenhaal has been on in recent years is that he’s quickly becoming one of America’s most daring actors, taking on roles that challenge himself as much as they do our impressions of him. His character in Demolition is another coup on par with last year’s Nightcrawler, as he’s playing another off-the-wall and unhinged character whom we never know what they’ll do next, which seems more like how people act in real life than those we tend to see in films.
Demolition won’t be for everyone because it’s very deliberately catering to a slightly-skewed sensibility rather than one that needs to have every thing neatly wrapped up in a tight bow. It also seems like the kind of movie that could easily grow into a cult classic once more people realize how genius it truly is.

His latest loner is Davis Mitchell, an investment banker in Jean-Marc Vallée’s Demolition. Davis is a paragon of “success,” but when he loses his wife in a horrific car accident, realizes that the life he’d led was a lie; that it was someone else’s version of the American dream.
“I think anybody whose focus is only capitalism, it will take its toll,” Gyllenhaal says. “But it’s about making choices based on convention—on the market versus what your instincts tell you.”
Instead of returning to autopilot, Davis chooses to destroy the any and all remnants of his former self. Armed with a sledgehammer and bulldozer, he reduces his chic suburban home to a pile of rubble. Along the way, he forms a unique bond with another lost soul, Karen (Naomi Watts), and her son Chris (Judah Lewis), who’s suffering an identity crisis of his own.
This concept of demolition-as-catharsis isn’t in the cards for Gyllenhaal, personally. When the 35-year-old finds himself losing his center, he chooses the Middle Way.
“I like to meditate as opposed to destroy things,” he says, unleashing his boyish smile. “I think it temporarily feels good to destroy things—or you think it will—but it ultimately doesn’t do much. Creating something is a lot harder, and a lot more satisfying. It takes more time, and you have to sit through the more painful feelings in order to create.”
And Gyllenhaal is at his best portraying those stalking the fringes of society. When asked why he’s so adept at capturing antisocial characters who some would classify as falling somewhere along the autism spectrum, he takes a long pause, before raising his voice and posture ever so slightly: “We have a desperation to categorize people who are ‘not normal,’” he says. “Normal, to me, is perverse. I don’t know why I enjoy those characters. I think there’s more depth to play, and more choices to be made within the workday. You can really explore a lot of different feelings, and that’s what I’m interested in: exploring my own feelings through different characters. When somebody exists outside of what we consider the norm, you have more opportunity to discover.”

This is one of my favorite roles I have seen Gyllenhaal take on. He is not only funny but also heartfelt. His eyes also manage to convey so much without saying a word. it is a truly great performance to watch. He is not the only one who shines in this film. Naomi Watts as Karen is very intriguing too. She is a woman who is stuck in her humdrum life, She is struggling to raise a young complicated boy, going through the motions with her boyfriend/boss, and is suddenly smitten with this new complex man who has found his way into her life due to a simple twist of fate.
The acting is top notch and the film is a complex as it is simple, both relatable and distant. Which I guess is what director Jean-Marc Vallée may be going for with this film. It is a story about finding out who you really are and what you really want with your life. It begs you to take a closer look and deconstruct things to get the full picture without any flash or distraction to take away from the truth of the matter. For anyone who is living a life they may not have imagined for themselves and who just can't remember how they got there, this is one of those movies that makes you want to take a closer look.
Because of all of that we scored Demolition with a solid A. It is not what everyone may expect going into this film, but it is well worth the journey.

'S.H.I.E.L.D.' star Chloe Bennett wants her video game character to have realistic body
Chloe Bennet is really stoked to have a video game character look just like her. But she really wants it to look like her.
The actress, who plays Quake/Agent Daisy Johnson on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. on ABC, made sure that when Quake joined a video game like Marvel's Contest of Champions, everything was, well, proportional.
"I actually kind of made a note that I wanted the boobs of my character to be not as big," Bennet told USA TODAY in a recent phone interview. "Because they tend to in comics -- I think the male artists get a little excited? And I just want young girls to know that you can be awesome and sexy without huge boobs. So I’m kind of excited to have that be some input to the game."
This isn't the first time that Bennet has had that particular note when it comes to her character taking on a life outside the TV show.
"I make that a note pretty often for our show," she explained. "If they’re ever doing mockups I want to make sure that’s not what the focus is about and it’s about who the character is and her backstory and how well she can fight and how smart she is."
The character is not making its debut in the game until this fall but the mock-up was revealed last week part of Marvel's Women of Power initiative. And the cartoon Daisy Quake looks "awesome," according to the actress.
What's it like with a character in a video game that looks just like you, otherwise?
"I’m really stoked and excited. I’m very excited to get to fight and do stunts without getting injured. On set you definitely walk away with several bruises. So it will be fun to play the game and kind of be in the comfort of my own bed."
