Best Actor: Jake Gyllenhaal and Oscar Isaac on the Fringes (Poll)
One of the surprises of this year has to be Dan Gilroy’s Nightcrawler and the exceptional lead performance by Jake Gyllenhaal. This has to be his best since Brokeback Mountain, perhaps Zodiac. He borrows a bit from his Zodiac performance, in fact, and you can imagine where his obsession to find the killer might lead him. You could watch Zodiac and Nightcrawler and have a pretty good time, actually. After I saw Nightcrawler I thought about the Jake Gyllenhaal character quite a bit. The more I thought about it the more I wondered what his primary motivation was.
With Travis Bickle, Rupert Pupkin or any other out of sorts psychopath in a film you know what their motivator is. You know what they want and why they’re doing what they’re doing. But in Nightcrawler, that is not the case. It seems to be partly that 1) Gyllenhaal’s character merely fills a narrative need to slam our now disgusting media coverage. It does that so well that by the end of the movie you’re thinking: this is really our lives now. It’s uncomfortable watching news footage after seeing the movie. You begin to wonder what’s real, what’s manufactured for ratings. Or, 2) Gyllenhaal just likes playing God. He is a serial killer but he’s doing it in a way that is considered somewhat acceptable.
But it’s hard to complain about such a satisfying film and performance. If it were me, he’d likely make my top five of the year.

Actors Maggie Gyllenhaal and Wanda Sykes, Conde Nast Entertainment topper Dawn Ostroff and script supervisor Mary Bailey are set to be honored with New York Women in Film and Television’s Muse Awards.
The 34-year-old Muse Awards single out women in the film, TV and digital media industries for notable achievement and vision. At the same event this year, filmmaker and philanthropist Abigail Disney will take the Loreen Arbus Changemaker Award.
Gyllenhaal, currently on Broadway in “The Real Thing,” recently starred in the BBC-Sundance Channel series “The Honourable Woman,” while Sykes had a recent stint in Amazon’s “Alpha House.” Ostroff takes the honor for a career that before Conde Nast included leading the CW and UPN networks as well as 20th Century Fox Television. Bailey has a list of credits that includes “Rosewater,” “August: Osage County” and “Ricki and the Flash,” the upcoming Jonathan Demme film that stars Meryl Streep.

Just friends? Chloe Bennet is keeping mum about her relationship with former One Tree Hill star Austin Nichols! The 21-year-old actress is denying about a possible romance, despite rumors that the two are an item.
"Ah no, we're good friends," the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. star told Us Weekly at the Teen Vogue Young Hollywood party in Los Angeles, Calif., on Friday, Sept. 27. "We met in L.A. just hanging out," she said.
The former Nashville guest star was reportedly said to be dating Nichols, 33, earlier this month. "He's a very nice guy," she added. "He's a cutie."
The brunette beauty and Nichols have been spending some time together since first meeting on the west coast. On Sept. 15, Elizabeth Henstridge, who costars with Bennet in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., tweeted a picture of the two with a group of friends. "Things that get better with age; cheese, wine and laser tag," she wrote.
Bennet was briefly linked to her former Nashville costar Sam Palladio. Nichols split from his OTH former costar Sophia Bush after dating from 2006 to 2012.

That Sundance Film Festival appearance by Jake was on January 22, 2013 when he flew to Utah for 24 hours.
Prior to that, Jake and Austin were photographed together in New York back in November 2012, which is a pattern of theirs right after they've had another visit from the stork.
But back to the family affair: Not only was Gyllenhaal's godmother, Jamie Lee Curtis, in attendance, the actor also spent a "large portion" of the evening cradling and playing with a baby that was rolling with the group.
