Friday Update #2: Sources tell BoxOffice that Nightcrawler could top expectations by ending up with $14 million during its debut frame.
Check back tomorrow morning for official studio estimates.
Friday Update #1: Open Road Films reports that Nightcrawler earned an estimated $515,000 from Thursday evening shows. By comparison, last week's John Wick earned $870,000 as part of a $14.4 million opening weekend, while A Walk Among the Tombstones took in $430,000 as part of its $12.8 million debut back in September. The pic reportedly cost a modest $8 million to produce, so this early start--combined with an excellent 96 percent Rotten Tomatoes score--bodes well for a profitable run.

Early word of mouth is strong with a 93 percent Flixster user score, lining up with critics' 90 percent Rotten Tomatoes score as of Saturday morning.
BoxOffice projects a healthy $13 million weekend and a first place finish overall for the modestly budgeted flick.

Sunday Update: It turned out to be an extremely close race for first place this weekend between Open Road's Nightcrawler and Universal's Ouija. The two films are currently tied for first with weekend studio estimates of $10.9 million each, so final rankings won't be known until actuals are released on Monday. It should be noted that on Friday and Saturday, Ouija grossed $8.4 million, while Nightcrawler took in $7.87 million.
Open Road's Nightcrawler debuted with an estimated $10.91 million. The critically acclaimed crime thriller starring Jake Gyllenhaal appeared set to lead the weekend after a close second place finish on Friday, but Friday's $3.2 million performance ultimately wasn't affected by Halloween as much as anticipated. Nightcrawler was able to open in line with pre-release expectations, which were boosted a bit by the film's strong reviews and relatively strong online activity over the past few weeks. The film opened 17 percent below the $13.15 million start of Open Road's End of Watch back in September of 2012. Nightcrawler received a lackluster B- rating on CinemaScore, which suggests that the film isn't going over as well with audiences as it has with critics.

Jake Gyllenhaal earned raves and an Oscar nomination for his portrayal of a ranch hand engaged in a clandestine same-sex affair in "Brokeback Mountain," but he now says the movie "lives in its own space."
"It was very successful in many different ways," Gyllenhaal, 33, told host Ricky Camilleri of the 2005 film during an appearance on HuffPost Live this week. "It gave me the idea that movies can be important, that they do have some sort of political value."
Recalling a recent run-in with "Brokeback" director Ang Lee, Gyllenhaal went on to describe the creative process behind "this little movie that we made with this master filmmaker...on a story that we all thought was really beautiful."
"It's an honor to be a part of [that movie] and it was the universe bringing it my way," he said.
Jake Gyllenhaal is set to reteam with his “Southpaw” director, Antoine Fuqua, in the IM Global drama “The Man Who Made It Snow.”
Michael Kingston and Brett Tabor are penning the script, which is based on the true story of Max Mermelstein, a Jewish hotel engineer, who transformed a small mom-and-pop drug organization into a billion-dollar enterprise known as the Medellin Cartel.
IM Global is financing and will be selling international rights at AFM this week.
The role gives Gyllenhaal another edgy thriller to add to his career and also gives him an opportunity to work with Fuqua again after filming the boxing pic “Southpaw” with him that will bow next year.
"While Rene Russo is every bit as deserving of an Oscar nomination as Gyllenhaal, Sneider also argues on behalf of Robert Elswit's striking cinematography, James Newton Howard's haunting score and Gilroy's original screenplay."
I'm sure Jake would love Oscar nomination, but I think he's mature enough to have the right perspective and be more happy about great projects / movies.
What was it like working with Heath Ledger? Are there any stories in particular that capture what he was like as an actor/person?
[–]Jake-Gyllenhaal[S]
Well, I think that he was and is one of the best actors of my generation.
And as it goes with people who are as talented as he was, sort of constantly an inspiration.
I remember him saying to me, early on, before we started shooting Brokeback Mountain, that his character had a hard time with the light, that bright lights were overwhelming to his character. And that was one of my first insights into the process and preparation for acting that i had never really experienced, that a character would feel something from the elements that would affect his whole being. And Heath gave me that.
What was the last picture you took with your phone?
[–]Jake-Gyllenhaal[S]
Let me look...
gets out phone
Oh there was a really sweet little girl with her mother on set yesterday, and her mom was holding her, and she had such a sweet face and was holding a lollipop and I took her picture. I know that doesn't sound ideal, it's not that cool, but I think it's cool.
I also took a picture of "Skip to My Lou" Because that's the name of my character when I was in the dressing room at Jimmy Fallon, there was a vintage book, so I took a picture of it. I thought it was fate.
I also by mistake took a video of it in slo-mo. Of a book, on a shelf. I'm still learning to use my phone.
But you'd be surprised at how entertaining a book sitting on a shelf in slo-mo could be.
Director Antoine Fuqua will reteam with actor Jake Gyllenhaal for "The Man Who Made It Snow" - a biopic on notorious 1980s cocaine smuggler Max Mermelstein – at the time, the only American let into the inner circle of the Colombian cocaine cartel.
Fuqua and Gyllenhaal recently wrapped production on the boxing drama "Southpaw."
The Max Mermelstein biopic will be the first project produced under the production partnership Fuqua inked with IM Global - one of the leading film financing, sales and distribution companies in the world - earlier this year.
The deal will see IM Global develop, produce and finance feature film projects with Fuqua's production company - Fuqua Films.
Gyllenhaal will also produce alongside Fuqua, Brent Tabor and IM Global’s Matt Jackson. IM Global CEO Stuart Ford serves as executive producer.
prairiegirl said... ... You better believe there are STILL posters who believe Jake has kids. He's got a buttload of them with his husband, Austin Nichols.
That doubt about kids is so 2009. We've long passed that. In fact, if anyone has been lurking at all for the past 5 years, I really am surprised they would question some of us' belief in Jake being a father. Other than the paid troll, I can't even recall the last time someone came on here and questioned the existence of kids - I bet it has been at least two years. It kind of feels like a time warp, lol.
How inhumane a person would he be to have flowers in the attic like that?
Well - if that's how you want to term it, then Jake's pretty inhumane because he's fathered kids.

Andrew Griffin @_andrew_griffin 2h 2 hours ago Nightcrawler excellent, as expected. Gyllenhaal even better than expected — best psychopath ever on screen, I think.
"Jake Gyllenhaal has told Sky News he believes news coverage has been dumbed down to worrying levels.
The Oscar nominee - speaking about his new film Nightcrawler - said it is impossible to avoid being manipulated by a news agenda that runs "… a video of a cat falling 40 storeys and surviving next to some huge political issue".
"We're living in a time where information has equality and that is unfortunate - there should be a hierarchy in which we're told the current political state of things over the survival of a cat," he said."
@Wetdarkandwild OMG!!!! “NAILED getting a U.K. release under a different name http://blogs.indiewire.com/theplaylist/david-o-russells-abandoned-nailed-getting-uk-release-in-2015-under-title-politics-of-love-20141105 … ” #JakeGyllenhaal
We've been covering the tale of David O. Russell's aborted "Nailed" for years (most recently in our feature Lost & Abandoned: 10 Movies That Were Shot, But Eventually Scrapped), but the film is one that doesn't seem to know when to say die. To make a long story short, Russell's comedy — Jessica Biel, Jake Gyllenhaal, Catherine Keener, Tracy Morgan and James Marsden — follows an uninsured waitress (Biel) who accidentally gets shot in the head with a nail. She goes to Washington on a crusade to fight for the rights of the bizarrely injured, but gets taken advantage of by a slimy congressman (Gyllenhaal). A great premise for sure, however a string of financial bungling plagued the movie throughout production, and filming eventually halted entirely before the crucial injury sequence could be reshot. The movie changed hands, Russell walked away from it, but Voltage Pictures seems to have figured out a way to get it out there, and "Nailed" is headed for a UK release.
Screen Daily reports that Arrow Films has snapped up the UK rights to the film that's now called "Politics Of Love" with plans for a 2015 release. And no, Russell was not involved. Instead, producer Kia Jam ("Sin City: A Dame To Kill For," "Lucky Number Slevin") completed the cut (his company K. Jam Media picked up the rights to this movie last year), but there's a bigger question now in play: will the movie get a stateside release?
We're not sure of what legalities might be in the way of this movie getting hitting U.S. theaters, but the film has already been rated by the MPAA (PG-13 "for sexual contact and language" in case you're wondering). And certainly, with Russell himself washing his hands of his movie, we don't see any of the cast getting involved to do any press for it, putting any potential distributor in an interesting position.

Guy Fawkes (13 April 1570 – 31 January 1606) was an English soldier and a member of a group of Roman Catholic conspirators who attempted to carry out the Gunpowder Plot to assassinate King James I of England (James VI of Scotland) and the members of both houses of the Parliament of England with a huge explosion, which was prevented by his arrest on 5 November 1605.
Jake Gyllenhaal Is a Night-Crawling Master November 6, 2014 James Franco
By James Franco
From the column 'A Few Impressions'
I love an acting career comeback, especially for someone as deserving as Jake Gyllenhaal. His role as a creepy Los Angeles crime videographer in Nightcrawler, following his tattooed detective in Prisoners last year, signals a career revival that could be the next McConaissance.
Jake's career is clearly going in a different direction than it was just a few years ago. He's moving away from Prince of Persia, towards nuanced roles as neo-noir detectives and creeps. The new trajectory can trace its beginnings back to the Los Angeles cop drama, End of Watch, directed by Fury director David Ayers, where Jake was able to start shaping real characters again. He displayed some of his natural charm and wit in the car conversations with Michael Pena, conversations that are the anti-True Detective car scenes—the men talk about life issues and tell jokes instead of discussing Frederich Nietzsche and yellow kings.
In End of Watch and Prisoners, Jake played his characters of the night with specificity and veracity. He brings that same quality to Nightcrawler, where he portrays a slimy loner in the mold of Travis Bickle who becomes the premier documenter of Los Angeles crime.
His new roles, when presented together, show that Gyllenhaal is indeed back and he has no qualms about crawling in the dirt for his characters. He is no longer interested in pretty-boy commercial silliness. His choice of roles is precise, unconventional, and daring.
So what's so good about the character he plays in Nightcrawler? First, Jake lost the weight. He looks so thin and hunched he's like something out of Nosferatu, with a wicked grin always ready to curl up. Second, the hair—it's long, but not so long that it can be put into a regular ponytail. The best he can do is a pathetic little samurai tail, something he does when he wants to get down to serious business.
The isolation is part of the character, and it defines him. He has no meaningful relationships, so the work becomes his only concern. He is obsessed with work because it is the one thing that he can do well. He has no one else in his life he cares for, unless you count Rene Russo's character, the television producer who buys his material.
His skills as a crime videographer empowers him in ways that nothing else can. The shocking news footage he captures on video are the best of their kind, partly because he manipulates crime scenes and goes into places he's not supposed to.
His work is reality television's revenge on the movie business. The tools of the entertainment industry are taken out at night and used for a different kind of entertainment. We want to watch horror when it's on a screen, regardless of it being fact or fiction. And it's more interesting when it's real.
This is the movie that captures the psyche of the paparazzo dorks who stalk stars—subterranean hunters who, armed with their precious cameras, turn citizens into prey. It shows how easy it is to dehumanize your subject when you're looking at them from the other side of a lens.
This movie also captures our desire to look. We want to look at the car accidents, to rubberneck. Like porn stars who aren't given mainstream credit, even though so many people watch porn, Jake's nightcrawler creature exists because the demand is there. He's going to keep crawling though all our nasty business because we keep watching.

Saturday Update:
Open Road reports that Nightcrawler bowed to $3.2 million on Friday, a solid start for the Dan Gilroy film given the deflation that occurs on Halloween for most films. Early word of mouth is strong with a 93 percent Flixster user score, lining up with critics' 90 percent Rotten Tomatoes score as of Saturday morning.
BoxOffice projects a healthy $13 million weekend and a first place finish overall for the modestly budgeted flick.

Nightcrawler is outstanding. Anchored by an incredible performance from Jake Gyllenhaal, he is utterly amazing.

Jake about Brokeback
:)
"It's an honor to be a part of [that movie] and it was the universe bringing it my way," he said.

http://www.thewrap.com/whats-the-deal-with-jake-gyllenhaal-and-nightcrawlers-oscar-chances-video/?utm_source=newsletter&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=contactology
Busy, busy, busy!

:)
Adults from reddit are so adult. Terrible, lol

The way Jake Gyllenhaal changed for Nightcrawler kinda reminded me of how Heath Ledger portrayed the Joker
A 2015 shoot is scheduled.
PG is still stupid and insane, yuck!

Other than the paid troll, I can't even recall the last time someone came on here and questioned the existence of kids -
I bet it has been at least two years. It kind of feels like a time warp, lol.
How inhumane a person would he be to have flowers in the attic like that?
Well - if that's how you want to term it, then Jake's pretty inhumane because he's fathered kids.

If you see a better film than #Nightcrawler this year you can punch me in the face. Jake Gyllenhaal 10/10.
The 2005 film featured Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal playing Ennis Del Mar and Jack Twist.
Speaking to Huffpost live, the 33-year-old said the film now “lives in its own space.”
He said: “It was at the time, culturally, it gave me the idea that movies can be important.
“That they do have some sort of political value… it’s become something beyond what any of us could have imagined.
“It’s a beautiful story and it was very successful in many different ways and so that’s what brought a lot of the attention…
“That film lives in its own space. It’s one of those films that’s no longer mine – it’s sort of everyone’s.”
PG lacks the selfawareness to realize that OMG is really entertaining in its crazyness.
Plus, she has no clue what Flowers in the Attic means. She's such a simpleton.

Nightcrawler excellent, as expected.
Nah, cats should always be top news.
I think Jake's a dog person, lol

@Wetdarkandwild OMG!!!! “NAILED getting a U.K. release under a different name http://blogs.indiewire.com/theplaylist/david-o-russells-abandoned-nailed-getting-uk-release-in-2015-under-title-politics-of-love-20141105 … ” #JakeGyllenhaal
PG-13 for sexual contact and language - oh no, what a disappointment!

Jake Gyllenhaal Is a Night-Crawling Master
November 6, 2014
James Franco

I loved Nightcrawler. American Psycho meets Network meets Drive. The script is top notch and Jake Gyllenhaal is a revelation.

Nightcrawler was class. Gyllenhaal does crazy intense superbly and the whole thing had a "Taxi Driver" claustrophobia to it. Intense.
