A thin line between fandom and insanity

What turns a fan into a crazy fan?

Fan who writes insane theories as truths, ignores facts and fakes evidence in desperate attempt to support some delusion.

Two creepily similar examples:

1. Oh My Godot blog – "Jake Gyllenhaal and Austin Nichols are married and have 5 or 6 kids."
2. Hkn Haven blog – "Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson are married and have a kid."

From Hkn Haven blog:

"Yep Kristen and Rob still have a baby. Did you think that would change? No they are not bad parents because they don't spend 24/7 together. They spend plenty of time as a family that we don't know about.

Can't believe she (daughter) is two already! Adorable! Looking forward to the day when we get a pic like this of Rob, Kristen, and Sweet Pea. Sigh.

Yes they are married!

Is that his wedding ring on his finger? Could be. Wink.

She also said yes Kristen was in L.A on Rob's birthday. Taco stand she's pretty sure on but doesn't want to say 100 percent. July 4th is a definite yes.

As for where they live no she's not going to tell us where but yes they do live TOGETHER. Rob doesn't live under a bridge or sleep on an air mattress. He lives with Kristen and sleeps with her. Among other things.

Just because you don't see daily pics of them together like other celebrities who WANT to sell their relationship to the tabs doesn't mean their relationship doesn't exist. It most certainly does.

Having said that we are always still looking for clues to convince us what we already know to be true.

Rob and Kris are married and have a child. My husband believes this, too. You can't change our minds."

ALL that you can find posted on Oh My Godot blog, too.
Same fiction, same "arguments", same insanity.
Creepy.

Gyllenhaal is a wide-eyed, fascinating wonder here, easily giving one of the best performances of the year. Lou is the kind of terrifying sociopath who too often makes sense to completely dismiss. He's crazy but he's disturbingly successful at the same time. Bloom taps into a different kind of insanity when his lack of a moral code combines with Russo’s desperation (although I wish her character was more of a narrative equal to his; one of the film’s few flaws). Gyllenhaal never goes “Full Bickle,” keeping Lou grounded in a way that we believe him, an essential element of a film that gets this intense. Lou Bloom is a product of our news era, what has been spawned from a desire to get the story first, get the most blood in the footage and push the envelope of what’s right and what’s wrong. Nothing is wrong for Lou Bloom, other than failure.

However, the genius of “Nightcrawler,” implicit in Bloom’s namesake, is the alienated man was apparently always troubled; he just needed the right vocation to let his mania fully blossom. Gyllenhaal is a revelation once again, and the control of his instrument is a wonderful thing to witness. The character is unhinged, but precisely pitched. Unblinking and haunted, one imagines a rich back story for this character. While it's never explicitly stated, much is suggested by Gyllenhaal's fractured, on-the-edge performance and the environment around him; a lifetime of loneliness and isolation from an indifferent world that's about to crack and manifest itself in all kinds of ugly fissures. The harsh fluorescent brilliance of “Nightcrawler” is just how in tune Gyllenhaal, Gilroy and the movie are. Bloom and the movie slowly uncoil in tandem lock and step to unveil much more than an unsocialized loner who’s listened to too many of Tony Robbins' motivational speeches. But Gyllenhaal isn’t scene-chewing and the humanity glimpsed early on is perhaps what makes his sinister transformation so creepy.

Jordan Hoffman, Film.com

The best thing in “Nightcrawler,” however, is Jake Gyllenhaal himself. Lou Bloom, by some form of black magic, is likable, even though he is 100% devoid of morals and not even a real person. Nothing out of his mouth is genuine – he’s like Al Pacino’s character in “Glengarry Glen Ross,” but instead of obfuscating with verbal smoke and mirrors he’s disarmingly direct.

Jordan Mintzer, The Hollywood Reporter

It’s an acrobatic performance in a movie that constantly oscillates – sometimes impressively and sometimes tediously – between neo-noir and contemporary satire, using Los Angeles as the backdrop for a world whose values have gone completely out of whack. Those elements, along with a near two-hour running time, may make this upcoming Open Road release a tough sell for the general public, though the film will certainly have its fans, while its star should gain even more recognition as one of the most daring actors working in Hollywood today.

More raves

Jake Gyllenhaal Plunges To Terrifying Psychological Depths In The Fantastic Nightcrawler

Somehow, Jake Gyllenhaal doesn’t get full credit for the chances he takes as an actor. And yet, this is a performer who burst on the scene in City Slickers, but boasts such incredible, daring and unconventional films as Donnie Darko, Brokeback Mountain, Jarhead, The Good Girl and David Fincher’s masterpiece, Zodiac. But the DiCaprios and Depps of the world get lauded for their high-profile risks, while Gyllenhaal keeps delivering with the likes of Prisoners or Enemy.
The tide should turn in Gyllenhaal’s favor, finally, with Nightcrawler, a seedy, after-hours contemporary thriller about the insomniac ambulance chasers who record exclusive video at human tragedies, then sell them for top dollar to ratings-hungry local news producers.
Louis Bloom fascinates, particularly because he shifts shapes as he adapts to his scenario. You will spend the bulk of Nightcrawler trying to figure out what, about him, is accurate and true. Most of that is due to Gyllenhaal’s mesmerizing performance, which is both guarded (in the way it protects secrets) and completely open. Bloom is a pariah and a thief. He’s a smarmy grifter, but an entrepreneur with a taste for what’s seedy. He finds his niche in the tracking of ratings-worthy news, where whatever bleeds tends to lead.

Still, Gyllenhaal does a fantastic job channeling Louis’ outrageous and overwrought personality, whether he’s offering up lame sermons on entrepreneurship or tying his greasy long hair into a knot. It’s a performance that seems to take cues from both Robert De Niro in The King of Comedy and Joaquin Phoenix in The Master, although the real reference could be Timothy Treadwell in Werner Herzog’s Grizzly Man – another character risking his life to capture something deadly on video, well aware of both the danger it entails and the self-aggrandizement that it generates.

Consider Nightcrawler a success. The buzz on Jake Gyllenhaal's latest low-budget wonder is solid, with positive word-of-mouth and many critics impressed by the actor's rendering of a hard-on-his-luck Millennial who will go to any lengths to succeed at a job prowling the streets of Los Angeles.

"The best thing to ever happen to Jake Gyllenhaal's career is Prince of Persia," crows Indiewire.com, positing that the actor's career rejuvenation "is turning into full-blown renaissance, and it flowers impressively in Nightcrawler."

The Hollywood Reporter decided Nightcrawler "is destined to become a classic." Hitfix.com says the dark film is "a showcase for what may well be the best performance Jake Gyllenhaal has given so far."

"More and more I feel blessed when you make a movie that works and people respond to it so positively," said Gyllenhaal at the bumping HFPA / InStyle festival party on Saturday night.

While some are speculating on Oscar buzz for the creepy thriller about a gaunt, job-hungry local news stringer who will go to bloody depths to get the winning shot, "it's a long shot," admits Indiewire, adding that "the material is twisted stuff and probably a little too dark and pulpy for the Academy's tastes."

Still, it's a festival-sized shot in the arm for Gyllenhaal – especially upon the news that he's teaming up with Dallas Buyers Club and Wild director Jean-Marc Vallee on a new project, Demolition. Not in the future. "In a week," said Gyllenhaal, literally bumping into Vallee at the party as he spoke."It's a beautiful part," said Vallee.

"It's about a man who loses his wife and then destroys his life in more ways than one," added Gyllenhaal. Because why take a break while you're on a hot streak?

Wow 10\10
REVIEW: Having already seen a half-dozen movies at this year's edition of the Toronto International Film Festival, I can say without a doubt that NIGHTCRAWLER is the first truly great film I've seen from this year's programming. It's still very early, but I was absolutely floored by this darkly humorous, violent, chilling look at a sordid world many of us are utterly naive to.
Watching the evening news, have you ever wondered who goes in and shoots the aftermath of accidents and violent crime you see repeated over-and-over again? In NIGHTCRAWLER, you get up close and personal with a truly terrifying example of this breed, Jake Gyllenhaal's Lou Bloom. Gyllenhaal's always been a great actor (which he proved twice at last year's TIFF alone with PRISONERS and ENEMY). Leo Bloom is like his Travis Bickle, with him doing an unsettling job portraying the sociopathic Bloom, who we first catch ripping off copper-wiring and manhole covers to be resold for pennies to a construction company. When caught in the act he brutally assaults a guard, and he gets much, much worse as the film goes on.

Gyllenhaal's physical transformation is striking. While he apparently only lost twenty pounds or so, with his prominent cheekbones and huge eyes, he looks a lot different than the matinee idol audiences were drooling over at the post-film Q&A. This is a game-changer for his career, and if he doesn't get an Oscar nomination for this than something is seriously wrong with the Academy, as this is the performance of the year so far.

Make no mistake, he's playing a truly bad guy here. A lot has been made of its neo-noir take, with DP Robert Elswitt's neon-lit shooting of the Los Angeles suburbs by night casting a dark lens on what we assume are the quieter parts of the city. But, in classic noir, the hero is often an unwitting pawn. Gyllenhaal's Bloom happily goes down the rabbit hole, sneaking into crime scenes to shoot the victims, even moving corpses and at his worst interfering with investigations to spur even more violence he can exploit. He's an evil man, but a fascinating one.

Coming from writer-director Dan Gilroy, NIGHTCRAWLER's depiction of Bloom is never simple, furthering the TAXI DRIVER comparisons. We get inside his head, and that's a nasty place to be. However, special contempt is saved for Rene Russo's news director at the station where Gyllenhaal sells his work. She laps up his brutal clips telling him to think of their program as “a woman running down the street screaming with her throat cut.” Russo is tremendous in her first really juicy role in a while (with a possible best supporting actress nod seeming like a distinct possibility). What's interesting is how the relationship between her and Gyllenhaal develops, as their balance of power starts to shift from one to the other, leading to an amazing scene at a Mexican restaurant that will make jaws drop.

Additionally, Riz Ahmed, as Gyllenhaal's none-too-bright “intern” and Bill Paxton as his rock n'roll fellow “nightcrawler” are terrific, with both playing well off Gyllenhaal, and getting plenty of juicy scenes to sink their teeth into. It's amazing to think that this is Gilroy's directorial debut – although he previously co-wrote his brother Tony Gilroy's THE BOURNE LEGACY, REAL STEEL and more. The pace is relentless, and it has lots of hair raising chase scenes including a climatic one that had everyone at the packed premiere applauding at its execution. The score by James Newton Howard is similarly good, with it being kind of Gyllenhaal's greek chorus throughout. This is really amazing stuff.

In the end, I'd say I was as blown away by NIGHTCRAWLER as I was when I saw GRAVITY, 12 YEARS A SLAVE or PRISONERS at last year's fest. It's an incredible piece of work, and so far my pick for not only the best movie of the festival, but maybe the best of the year as well. It's tremendous piece of work and it'll be a tough act to follow for any other TIFF title in the lineup.

For all of Gilroy’s skill as a director and screenwriter, Nightcrawler would not work without Gyllenhaal. I do not have enough adjectives to describe the power of his performance. Here are some I scribbled down over the course of watching the movie: Intense, blood chilling, darkly comic, calculating, intentionally robotic, off-putting, eerie, lonely, oddly naïve, and creepy. In one scene, Leo threatens Nina with such authority that I was pushing back in my seat. His even tone and tight, clipped sentences make a Terminator feel positively cuddly by comparison. It’s a performance that threatens to reach out of the screen, grab you by the throat, and eat your soul.
Nightcrawler had me gasping, laughing, flinching, and squirming for a multitude of reasons. We all know that local news is ghoulish and appeals to our worse desires. Gilroy hasn’t just created a searing reminder of a sickness we allow to persist; he’s also made a disturbing observation about how far people are willing to achieve their goals when morality and decency are treated as obstacles rather than the foundation for society.

Yesterday Shitty K posted one (1) Nightcrawler review, from The Boston Globe, and she made sure to choose something negative:

"... All right, I’m dropping too many old-movie references here, and “Nightcrawler” doesn’t quite hold the comparison. It’s a little too proud of its own daring, for one thing. And Gyllenhaal gives a big, juicy, eye-bugging performance that will either convince you of its creepazoid majesty or have you laughing up your sleeve. But, again, the guy’s having fun, and as my friend Sean Burns has pointed out, the last time that happened was “Bubble Boy.”
...
Folks, it’s called acting. “Nightcrawler” does it big and bold, which is more than all right. But if you want a performance that stays skulking around in your head for a while, Tom Hardy’s your man."

bit of Hardy said...

Despite this talented ensemable, “The Drop” rarely clicks, and most of the cast are on a pedestrian form of tough guy autopilot rather than connecting with each other or the material. The late James Gandolfini delivers dialogue seemingly filtered through the random James Gandolfini dialogue generator and therefore his performance is tiresomely gruff and banal. Tom Hardy is one of the great actors of his generation, possessing Brando-like intensity and a world of smoldering internal life. However, director Michaël R.

Roskam (“Bullhead”) never taps into that wealth of simmering moodiness in any meaningful way. In fact, Hardy, the protagonist, is a key weakness in the film and he feels not only lost but woefully out of place. His character carries a burden that makes him more complex than he initially seems, but Hardy plays him like an awkward halfwit—you’re half expecting some character from the neighborhood to call him “Marv’s cousin, you know, he’s a little slow.” His unfortunate choice of accent is decidedly more doofus than regional, and the ceaselessly artificial mumble doesn't help, nor does it help endear you to him. And don’t even ask about actor-to-actor chemistry between him and Rapace.

Will Jake Gyllenhaal Creepout 'Nightcrawler' Wow Crowds Outside Toronto as Well as Oscar Voters? (VI #film #awards http://bit.ly/1oXvkbE

The one dark horse Oscar candidate is Dan Gilroy's Jake Gyllenhaal vehicle "Nightcrawler," which allows the pale, gaunt actor to transform himself physically into Lou Bloom, a dangerous sociopathic creep in the vein of Robert De Niro's Travis Bickle in "Taxi Driver." Chasing after visceral and bloody video footage of fires, car crashes, and murder victims, Gyllenhaal's nightcrawler is magnetic and charming, a loser who wants to be a winner and doesn't care what he does to get there. And Bloom's dalliance with a desperate-for-ratings TV news director (an excellent Renee Russo) displays the ugly underside of today's local newscasts. "Lou is the coyote who looked me in the eye at night," said Gyllenhaal at the Q & A, video below.

^^^ said...

If Open Road can ride top-tier reviews to box office success---if "Nightcrawler" can be perceived as a breakthrough winner of a movie that is more than a genre exercise--then Gyllenhaal has a shot in a very competitive Best Actor race. He's respected and liked. He's been nominated once, for Ang Lee's "Brokeback Mountain.

Make no mistake, Nightcrawler is a major work for everyone involved – yet another powerful turn from Gyllenhaal (who truly gets better, weirder and richer with each feature), a battle cry of a debut feature from Gilroy and a uncanny showcase for supporting stars like Russo, Paxton and Ahmed. It's dark and strange and unsettling, but it's never anything less than compulsively and devilishly watchable and highly consumable. What is Nightcrawler? As Nina tells it, it's “a screaming woman, running down the street with her throat cut.” It's brutal, and you can't look away, but why would you want to?

You’re making your Broadway debut in Nick Payne’s “Constellations” this December, and you recently starred off-Broadway in Payne’s “If There Is I Haven’t Found It Yet.”

Jake: I love that play so much. It’s extraordinary, that play, and I had seen it in London a few years ago. Then I did “If There Is” and when the opportunity came to do it, it just seemed so logical to me. It’s a love story, a two-hander. It’s about a relationship between two people and the different scenarios which they go through in their relationship, but it happens in different universes. Nick’s writing is so beautiful. This one is very much exchanges but what happens is the play is written so that there are eight different scenarios and within those eight different scenarios there are five versions of the same scene. The first scene, she’s in a relationship, he’s not in a relationship. He’s interested, she’s not. Then in thirty seconds, bam, they’re both not in relationships, but they’re both not interested. It goes like that and you track a relationship through time over universes.

At least SpecialK is pleasant, nice, happy for Jake and a good-hearted person. She's glad when his career is doing well and he's getting good reviews. Tom is pretty much a good guy too. The rest? Nasty, bitter and jealous with borderline personality disorders. PG must be on one of her sabbaticals, and like a bad penny, will return.

Anonymous said...

Special K allowed all those "nasty, bitter and jealous with borderline personality disorders" people to post on her blog.
Special K trashed Jake and Jake's familly, too - like her red arrows posts about Maggie faking pregnancy.

Anonymous said...

Special K decided that all 'Jake is gay' fans are trolls if they question things or don't believe that Jake and Austin are a couple.

Anonymous said...

I don't know what that was all about, questioning Maggie's pregnancy! For the most part, harmless speculating I guess, but some of them go off the deep end.

When is Honourable Woman coming to US TV, does anyone know?

Anonymous said...

Special K allowed all those "nasty, bitter and jealous with borderline personality disorders" people to post on her blog.

... post nasty crap about Jake and his family on her blog.

Anonymous said...

"I don't know what that was all about, questioning Maggie's pregnancy!"

It was Special's attempt to prove that photo dates are faked, that Gyllenhaal family is helping Jake and Austin. Attempt to sell delusional lie as a "fact".
