It's funny how you return to a film you loved years ago wondering whether it will still mean as much now. Well I revisited Sidney Lumet's 1988 film RUNNING ON EMPTY and I was just as impressed, just as moved as I was all those years ago. It's about a family, mother Anne - CHRISTINE LAHTI, father Art - JUDD HIRSCH and their children Danny - RIVER PHOENIX and Harry - JONAS ABRY. The family has been on the run from the FBI for fourteen years, after Annie and Art's involvement in the bombing of a military laboratory in 1971 which resulted in the accidental maiming and blinding of a janitor. The kids are used to packing up quickly, moving to another town, another state, changing their names, their identities. Things reach a kind of crisis point in a New Jersey town where Danny's talent as a musician is recognized by his teacher and where he falls in love with the teacher's daughter Lorna - MARTHA PLIMPTON. Danny is torn between loyalty to his parents, his desire to attend Julliard and his love for Lorna.
He's so wonderful River Phoenix, it's a terrible reminder of the utter sadness and waste of his death nearly twenty years ago. He was nominated for an Oscar for his role in this as was the screenplay by Naomi Foner who coincidentally is the mother of Maggie and Jake Gyllenhaal.

Jake Gyllenhaal lives in NYC.
Director Baltasar Kormakur has already built an impressive ensemble cast to star in his upcoming Everest, the movie already set to star Josh Brolin, John Hawkes, Jason Clarke and Jake Gyllenhaal but today the list has gotten just a little bit longer. Variety has learned that actor Clive Standen, best known for his role as Rollo on the History Channel series Vikings, has nabbed a supporting role in the new mountain-set thriller.
Based on a script written by Lem Dobbs, Justin Isbell and William Nicholson, the film will be set in 1996, which is considered one of the deadliest years in Everest's history. The story will follow a "multi-expedition assault" on that mountain that turned deadly due a devastating snow storm. The tragic true story was famously turned into the non-fiction book Into Thin Air by Jon Krakauer, which will serve as partial inspiration for the new feature along with interviews with the survivors. At this time it's unknown who in the cast will be playing which roles.
Standen does have some film credits to his name, but is best known for his small screen work. Originally from Northern Ireland, the actor began his career in the UK, starring in episodes of shows like Doctor Who and Walking The Dead, and more recently played Gawain in the short lived series Camelot. On Vikings he plays the brother of Travis Fimmel, who will also soon be getting his big screen break in Duncan Jones' Warcraft. You can watch some of Standen in action in the clips below:

Vikings will return for the start of its second season at the end of this month on February 27th.
Everest which is a co-production between Working Title and Universal Pictures is scheduled to be in theaters on February 27, 2015, where it will do box office battle with the Tarsem Singh-directed sci-fi thriller Selfless starring Ryan Reynolds. Production will presumably be starting up soon.

Do they sell babies at Babies R Us? Because this family is trying to buy one! Adoption agencies up and down the West coast are buzzing about the “rush order” for a white baby placed by a celebrity couple that is faking the wife’s pregnancy!

They wouldn’t tell us the amount (although they hinted it was in the $1 million range), and they didn’t want to say whether the money was going to the attorneys, the adoption agency, the expectant mother, the hospital, the doctors, or a combination of the above. Yes, there are a lot of people to pay off! The only people that don’t have to be paid off are the family members of the adoptive couple, who all know about the deception but are playing along.
As of right now, it looks like they have found an expectant mother in the San Diego area and that the deal is closing just in time for the adoptive mom to avoid that fake miscarriage. However, the birth dates don’t match up exactly, so we don’t know what they are going to do about that. Since they have already faked the sonogram and the belly and the photo shoots and a video, they will likely lie about this, too.

Bar Katz claims the publication printed a libelous story falsely claiming he gave them an "exclusive interview" in which he said he and Hoffman were lovers, had seen Hoffman freebase cocaine the night before his death and that he'd seen Hoffman use heroin.
In a complaint filed in the New York Supreme Court, Bar Katz claims the story is a lie. "The story is a complete fabrication: There was no interview," it states. "Bar Katz and Hoffman were never lovers. Bar Katz did not see Hoffman freebasing cocaine the night before he died, or at any other time. Bar Katz never saw Hoffman use heroin or cocaine."
The lawsuit goes on to say that Bar Katz has "no recollection" of ever meeting the three writers on the National Enquirer story and "unquestionably has not spoken to them or anyone else from the Enquirer since Hoffman's death."
Bar Katz is seeking $5 million in actual damages and $45 million in punitive damages.

Attending Philip Seymour Hoffman's funeral is sure to have brought up painful memories for Michelle Williams who lost her former partner Heath Ledger to an accidental overdose six years ago.
But on Friday the actress had some emotional support in the form of close friend Jake Gyllenhaal, who is also the godfather to her and Heath's daughter Matilda, as he accompanied her to the sad event.
A visibly distressed Michelle clung to Jake’s arm as she left the St. Ignatius of Loyola church in New York supported by him and a female friend.
Michelle, who starred alongside Hoffman in 2008 film Synecdoche, New York, and Jake have remained close since Heath's death.
Earlier this week, she was seen visiting the home of Hoffman's estranged partner Mimi O'Donnell's Manhattan home.
The 33-year-old actress dated Ledger – who she and Jake starred with in Brokeback Mountain - for three years until 2007, splitting up less than four months before his untimely death in January 2008.
The couple welcomed daughter Matilda, now nine-years-old back in 2005.
Hoffman, 46, who was widely respected as one of the best actors of his generation, was found with around 70 bags of heroin on Sunday inside the apartment he was renting after splitting from partner Mimi O’ Donnell.
His body was discovered at the Greenwich Village home after Mimi phoned his friend David Katz to check on him when he failed to collect their children Cooper, 10, Tallulah, seven and Willa, five, at 9am.
He had been open about a past that included drug addiction and rehab.
The fiercely private star was mourned behind closed doors in an emotional farewell from his close-knit family and loyal Hollywood friends.
Hundreds of mourners came to say goodbye at the Upper East Side church.
These included stars such as Meryl Streep, Cate Blanchett, Joaquin Phoenix, Ethan Hawke, Amy Adams, Julianne Moore, Spike Lee, Louis C.K., Mary Louise Parker.
Laura Linney, John Slattery, Jerry Stiller, Marisa Tomei, Ellen Burstyn, Ashley Olsen, Diane Sawyer and her director husband, Mike Nichols also paid their respects.

'More freedom' in a sense that you have more options in life, that you're not tied down. Life and minimalism isn't 'one fits all' thing. For example, if you are a student, it could mean choosing between having a car or having money to take a plane and visit friends and family.
The student example doesn't fit because they don't have the choice. Being able to make the choice to be free of what you don't really need is the difference. A student is still making their way in life. Nice clothes of high quality, but not tons of them, good food, and cooking your own. A smaller home that uses less energy, realizing that a car really only is necessary to get you from one place to another, not a personal identity statement, that kind of thing, or maybe you don't need one at all.
The point is that everyone always has a choice and always makes a decision (except in case of extreme poverty), which can be seen from that small student and car example.
You get $150 for Christmas - will you spend it on another pair of shoes you don't need, but they are really cute, or concert with friends?
Will you buy coffee in Starbucks or fair trade coffee in the supermarket? Even such small purchase can be a statement about your beliefs and values, concious decision to support something good.
