'Gay closet is eating away at your soul'

Sean Maher
Sean Maher

“I was nervous coming here today because I’ve just never talked about it,” Sean Maher says, while sitting down to chat at Little Dom’s Italian bistro in Los Angeles’ trendy Los Feliz neighborhood, the area where the actor lives with Paul, his partner of nearly nine years, and their two children, Sophia Rose, 4, and Liam Xavier, 14 months. “But, it’s so liberating. It was interesting to be coming to have a conversation that I was always afraid to have.” Despite his trepidation, he adds with a big smile: “This is my coming out ball. I’ve been dying to do this.”

“I’ve never discussed it publicly,” the 36-year-old continues. “I’ve never been asked about it publicly, but I would be lying if I said I didn’t paint a different picture.” Maher says that not coming out wasn’t so much a choice as much as it was a reality of the business when he first came to L.A. fresh out of college back in 1997. Publicists working with him during his first Tinseltown role as the title character on Fox’s short-lived cop drama Ryan Caulfield: Year One assumed he was straight — and he didn’t tell them otherwise, out of fear. “I’m 22, I move to L.A., and it’s such a cliché, but the day I arrive, publicists from the show took me out to The Ivy for lunch,” he remembers. “They’re telling me, ‘You know, gosh, we’d really appreciate it if you could keep your girlfriend on the side because we want to appeal to the female demographic of the show.’”

Granted, Maher could have corrected his handlers, but in that instant, he decided not to. “At that moment, I didn’t think to say, ‘Oh, I’m gay,’ because right before I left New York [where he went to college at NYU], I had my manager tell me: ‘You need to get a girl on your arm or people will start talking.’ I remember telling him: ‘I’m gay.’ He had no idea. And he said: ‘All the more reason to get a girl on your arm.’ My agent was also like, ‘It’s best if you keep your options open. Maybe bisexual?’”

Despite pressure from his manager and agent, both of whom he has since parted ways with, it was ultimately Maher’s decision to stay in the closet, out of concern that he wouldn’t otherwise be able to book leading-man roles. “I kept thinking, This is my first show, I don’t want to get fired,” Maher says. “I’m thinking, What is the potential that if they caught wind that they had cast a gay lead actor that they would fire me? I was young, I was 22. I didn’t know anything. So that sort of started the idea of, okay, well, I’m working a lot, I guess I’ll just keep that gay part of my life on the back burner for now. I went so far as to sleep with women a couple times. It was a very confusing time for me.”

But being in the closet tormented Maher. “It was so exhausting, and I was so miserable,” Maher says. “I didn’t really have any life other than work and this façade I was putting on. So I kept my friends from college [where he was out] separate from my work friends, and that was very confusing. I just kept going on and on painting this picture of somebody I wasn’t. I didn’t have time for a personal relationship anyway. And you just don’t realize that it’s eating away at your soul.”

Although there have been famous cases of homophobia in Hollywood (ex. when Isaiah Washington called fellow actor T.R. Knight a gay slur on the set of ABC’s Grey’s Anatomy and was subsequently fired), Maher says he never encountered much hostility — mostly because he was never out and was very adept at acting straight. “Because I was never out, I was never addressed in a negative way to my face,” Maher says. “Although I witnessed a lot of it, whether it be making fun of gays or gay jokes. I just bit my tongue or looked the other way. That was part of the reason that I didn’t come out earlier — because there was an energy on set, and I felt like my being gay would have offset that, especially with the crew.”

Does Maher regret spending 14 years in the closet professionally? “I don’t think I have regrets,” he responds. “I do believe that sort of this journey took me to the place where I got and I don’t think I would feel so strongly about doing what I’m doing now had I not suffered for the years that I did.”

Having a family is what ultimately what made Maher want to be honest about his sexuality. “I have these beautiful children and this extraordinary family,” Maher says, “and to think in any way shape or form that that’s wrong or that there’s shame in that or that there’s something to hide actually turns my stomach.” Maher kept thinking about what daughter Sophia would say when she realized he was closeted professionally. “What would she think if I said, ‘Oh honey, you can’t come with me to work because they don’t know I have an adopted daughter and they don’t know that I’m gay.’ My children and our family, I’ve really never been as proud of anything in my life. I couldn’t be happier at this point in my life, and I feel like we’ve created this pretty extraordinary family.”

In the end, coming out publicly is what Maher feels he needed to do to tie his life together, personally and professionally. “Creatively, I feel so much more open and free, and I am so happy on The Playboy Club,” he says. “I think it’s because I’ve never been so open on set. All of the relationships that I have off-camera, I never would have allowed five years ago. It feels so liberating.”

    Posted: 1:54 AM, October 2, 2011

Jake Gyllenhaal had hoped for a nice, relaxing steam when he turned up at the 10th Street baths last week -- but arrived to find the place packed with power players in robes. Organizers of Elit by Stoli’s male-only gathering had taken over the place, with white towel-wearing guests including Nobu’s Richie Notar, venture capitalist Adam Dell, Niche Media founder Jason Binn, David Rabin and Lance Broumand. We’re told they, ahem, “let it all hang out.”

  10. An Encounter with Mr Gyllenhaal

Some days I remember that anything can happen in New York. Just when you really need to be woken up, New York obliges in one form or another. But she’s a fickle mistress – your wakeup call could range from the unpleasant (taxi driver locking the doors and refusing to go the “wilds” of Brooklyn at 2am despite the fact you are alone, drunk and in possession of a mangled umbrella entirely incapable of shielding you from the unpredicted deluge of dirty rain), odd (that guy with a cat on his head who incidentally has now migrated up Broadway all the way to SoHo) or the swoon-inducing: Jake Gyllenhaal quietly eating breakfast in my regular cafe. Those of you who know me will realise that this event is like some kind of personal milestone for me – he is one of the few people I would actually care to meet, the others being David Lynch and Hans Blix. Yes, Hans Blix. And possibly Mark Kermode.

Anyway, after a meeting on Thursday morning, I decided that I needed the type of reliably strong coffee which only this particular cafe* can supply. There was a lineup out the door and so my colleagues abandoned me to my fate. I hope they regret this now, because as I stood in line I saw a vaguely-familiar looking guy sitting by the window. When I realized it was Jake Gyllenhaal I immediately started looking anywhere but at him, as there was a kind of rising estrogen temperature in the room, a lot of giggling and trying to move up in the line to get a better view (which, apart from being mortifyingly embarrassing, is very annoying when you actually REALLY NEED YOUR COFFEE RIGHT NOW, GYLLENHAAL OR NOT).

As I looked back, expressionless, Jake looked right at me, in the eyes. I was very careful not to let any kind of expression cross my face (“Be careful,” warned my friend later. “First he’ll take your soul… then your apartment”). I probably should have smiled like a normal human, not stared coldly like Patrick Bateman. I glanced away and then looked back. Our eyes met again and we stared for 3 seconds. This sounds like the beginning of a romantic comedy, but in reality, it was almost a careful negotiation, like he was daring me to move suddenly and unleash chaos. I have the terrible feeling that my attempts to radiate coolness yet approachability, kind of “Hey, I really admire your political activism and your intelligent role choices and don’t worry I’m not going to throw myself at you from across the room,” unfortunately telepathically communicated “Dude, you’ve obviously been sitting there with your Macbook for like 3 hours now. Your coffee is cold. I’m wearing killer heels and just want to sit down” instead.

So as usual my tactics backfired, and whether he was being polite or quite possibly becoming increasingly terrified of the estrogen meter reaching critical levels, poor Jake started packing up his Macbook and his iPod and carried his dishes over to the counter. At this point it briefly crossed my mind that this might very well be my only chance ever to strike up a conversation with him, but I just couldn’t bring myself to do it. Besides, since he was in possession of a pair of (very attractive) glasses, it’s quite possible that he hadn’t actually seen me at all, and had merely been staring into space trying to decide whether he wanted the rest of his croissant or not.

Regardless, thank you New York for reminding me that strange things can happen. And Jake Gyllenhaal if you read this, please know you never have to give up your seat for me – oh and thanks for supporting Greenpeace. We appreciate it.

The Police star reached the milestone on Sunday (02Oct11) and he celebrated with a lavish birthday concert in the Big Apple in aid of local charity the Robin Hood Foundation.

The gig at New York City's Beacon Theater included performances from Joel and Wonder, as well as actor Robert Downey, Jr., will.i.am and Mary J. Blige...

Famous faces in the audience included Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson, Jake Gyllenhaal, Darren Aronofsky and Melanie Griffith, while Sting and his wife Trudie Styler also invited 32 members of the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards, who have all completed missions in Afghanistan.

  16. Question: were posters who defend insane theories always like that?
I love gossip and learning about Hollywood fakeness, but what I'm really interesed in is the TRUTH behind PR smoke and mirrors. I've followed J&A gossip because I was interested to find out what's really going on.
What about J&A&BT supporters? Were they ever interested in the truth? Or just wanted Ted to be right and J&A to be together?

Hard to tell becuse during Reeke time most people didn't really question J&A relationship. Right now Special K and regular OMG posters have no problem lying in order to support their "J&A are still together" opinion - they aren't interested in the truth and facts/"facts" posted by them should be double-checked.

  31. I used to love the 10th Street Baths back in its single-sex days. Lots of immigrant types and old Polish and Russian guys, gay men, young old, etc.

Everyone was naked, but the place was pretty much sex-free, except for the Russian female masseuses (NOT massage therapists) who gave hand jobs and blow jobs for $25 to $50 to the straight men who wanted them.

I used to get massages from the male Russian masseurs, who appeared to be somewhat homophobic. There was one very young hot to-die-for guy who was very surly and would be extremely rough with the massages he gave me, like he was furious to have to work on a fag. But jesus, it felt good to be so manhandled by him, naked with his long beautiful uncut dick.

And there was an enormous -- maybe 300 pounds -- very hairy blond-all-over guy who was like a bear or a bull, he was so strong. The room was tiny and when he needed to get to the other side of the table, he would pick up the whole table with me on it and move it so he could get in a better position. And I always felt wrung out like an old wash cloth when he finished.

There were a few male hustlers who hung out there, but they were very discreet and did not operate with any degree of openness on the premises. I remember one very hot young guy who appeared to be straight and had an absolute horse dick that mesmerized me, and he followed me out one day and offered to let me suck it, for a price, of course, but alas I was young and too poor to hire him. I had to scrimp and save to have the cash to go once or twice a month.

But then they integrated the sexes so there were always women there and the men stopped going naked and started wearing swim trunks. Sigh.

I'm betting we know get a bunch of same entertainment media stories of Jake being seen out with several different women in the next few days. You know, so they can show what a Ladies Man Jake is. Also bet that they must be turning up the pressure for him to pick a new beard. Surprised they have allowed him to go so long without one. Wonder if Jake will ever grow a spine and do his own thing. Prairiegirl had a big tanty yesterday about censorship on WFT2 - she is just pissed because she can't ring up Jackie and get posts deleted, like she does on OMG.

PG: And frankly, I don't care to read anything brought over from a site where anything and everything I have put up has been deleted/censored no matter how mild it is.

  66. Thomas Jane, who plays a gigolo on the new HBO series “Hung,” revealed today that he used to turn tricks while living as a homeless teen in Los Angeles.

Jane says he was an out-of-work actor, and often performed sexual acts with men to make ends meet.

The actor tells the L.A. Times, “When I was a kid out here in L.A., I was homeless. I didn’t have any money and I was living in my car.”

“I wasn’t averse to going down to Santa Monica Boulevard and letting a guy buy me a sandwich. Know what I mean?”

Jane says, “Being a young artist and broke in Los Angeles, I was exploring my sexual identity,” noting that the experience was productive for him in that it “blew the doors off of my conventional upbringing and thinking and opened up possibilities for me.”

The actor, who has been married twice – most recently to Patricia Arquette – says he doesn’t regret his sexual “experimentation,” stating, “Until you’ve tasted the food, you don’t know whether you’ll like it or not, as my mom always said.”

The oldest Gyllenichol is 3 yrs old, the youngest under 1. I'm trying to give these guys some time to get their family assembled and situated and then see what they do. But they are not going to come out right now while I believe they have another one on the way. The glare of the media would be circus-like.

WTF?????? Is this woman delusional? Who's carrying the bun in the oven? Last time I look, Austin nor Jake look pregnant.
Does she think someone can just go to the store and order a surrogate baby every year? Then don't take care of the child when the 1st months and and year are a vital time in a newborns life.

    This woman needs help.

  79. Whether it be trolls, Babbleheads or old DC posters but you women need to grow up.

You need to wake up to reality. What trolls? People are trolls because they don't believe in BTs? Well?

    ReplyDelete
  80. Why can't you just accept what other people believe. Everyone can believe whatever they want. I believe 100% that Jake is gay. That is all I care about now. Not sure what else is going on inhis life. I also began to believe Jake and Austin may have broke up but when I saw the Leadville picture I chnaged my mind. I think they very well may still be together. Some people very very much believe that Jake and Austin have kids. I respect that. No one else from DC, DL or GB has to believe it. Either does anyone who has held a grudge againt OMG. Give it a rest.

    ReplyDelete
  81. Why can't you just accept what other people believe.

I'm an atheist. I accept and have no problem with people who believe in God.

But I have a problem with people who ignore common sense, ignore facts and claim that insane fiction has something to do with reality and with real poeple. And who are insulted when other people point out their delusional bullshit.

    ReplyDelete
  82. when I saw the Leadville picture I chnaged my mind

Sure you did. Special K lies about Austin being in that picture and the rest of you pretend the same. Pathetic.

    ReplyDelete
  83. P.S. All you have to do is zoom and compare that photo with other photo where you can clearly see Austin's ear. That is enough to see for zourself that man in Leadville pic isn't Austin (not to mention that Austin is taller). But OMG doesn't care about facts or truth.

    ReplyDelete
  84. I respect that.

Unfortunately I can't respect anything about OMG. I don't understand what's wrong with you, why are you so desperate about J&A that you are willing to make fools of yourself like that (see 6:50 PM post for example).

    ReplyDelete
  85. I don't think anyone at OMG is making a fool of themselves. That was Austin in Leadville. PLus I am not saying that the girls are wrong about kids. I don't know. It does bother me to think if they exist that Jake would lie and hide them.

    ReplyDelete
  86. That was Austin in Leadville.

It wasn't. That man's ear doesn't match Austin's ear. You ignore simple facts like that and then say "don't think anyone at OMG is making a fool of themselves". It would be funny if it wasn't sad.

    ReplyDelete
  87. PLus I am not saying that the girls are wrong about kids. I don't know.

You don't know? You don't know that Ted mentioned only BT and that he mentioned, more than once, that there is one BT? You didn't notice that there is nothing to support BTx4 theory? You didn't notice that Jake and Austin don't give a shit about being in the same city and the same time?

    ReplyDelete
  88. I am lucky to know where the heck I am some days. I certainly don't know where Jake and Austin are but Austin was in Leadville with Jake. To much similaries in that pic. Any angle can make an ear look different. Maybe Abby from NCIS could tell us. LOL! Loosen up ur staring to sound like a looney:-)

    ReplyDelete
  89. Sorry Tom, but you and OMG sound like loonies who spent hours and hours analysing photos that could prove "J and A are together" speculations, but who refuse to do that with Leadville photo because a lie about that photo is needed for J/A fiction. Transparent and pathetic.

  90. The only posts that get deleted at OMG are those using nasty words and name-calling.

The same apparently can't be said for WFT2, which apparently deletes posts based just on where/who the post is coming from.

Meanwhile people who haven't posted at OMG in years continue to beat a dead horse, whining about how they don't have freedom to say what they want over there, all while claiming OMG is too crazy of a place for them to even bother with.

Why people continue to fret over a handful of people whose opinions they don't like is beyond me. It's not going to change anything.

  95. Jake Gyllenhaal charmed Melanie Griffith and Don Johnson’s daughter, Dakota Johnson, at Sting’s 60th birthday bash, and spies said the up-and-coming actress looked enchanted by the “Source Code” star.

“She was trying to play it cool, but looked very smitten,” said a witness, adding that Griffith kept a watchful eye over her at Sting’s Beacon Theatre concert.

Gyllenhaal has been seen hanging with a string of Hollywood starlets after splitting with Taylor Swift in January. And Dakota has no fewer than six new films dropping, including “21 Jump Street” with Jonah Hill and “The Five-Year Engagement.”

  130. Blake Lively, Leonardo DiCaprio Split

It was fun while it lasted!

After five months together, Blake Lively and Leonardo DiCaprio have parted ways, reps for both stars confirm exclusively to Us Weekly. The pair "remain friends," Lively and DiCaprio's reps added.

First spotted getting cozy while aboard Steven Spielberg's yacht in Monte Carlo on May 17 during the Cannes Film Festival, the couple embarked on a whirlwind, super-luxe summer romance that spanned the globe. During their time together, the Gossip Girl actress, 24, and Inception star, 36, took their PDA parade to romantic locales ranging from Venice, Italy to Anaheim, Calif. to NYC. In late August, Lively even flew thousands of miles from the U.S. to Sydney, Australia -- for a quick weekend -- where her beau was filming The Great Gatsby.

Weeks before he and Lively became an item, DiCaprio and model Bar Refaeli called it quits on their on-and-off, five-year relationship. Back in October 2010, Lively and Gossip Girl costar Penn Badgley ended their three-year romance.

The pair's recent split is sure to come as a surprise to some DiCaprio pals, one of whom told Us they'd "never seen him like this with a girl." Back in June, the couple were ensconced in DiCaprio's L.A. home, where Lively "spent the whole time baking....Leo's never dated a girl who can cook. And he's smitten!" The duo also bonded with one another's parents.

Echoed another insider this summer: "I bet they get engaged in six months."

As for Lively, she's long said she never lets public opinion affect her relationships.

"I have a strong sense of myself. That gives me a sense of security, you know? Every relationship you have, you're learning and growing and taking something from that," the actress recently told Glamour magazine. "So for me, it's never been too dramatic of a thing when something ends."

  154. Supposedly Blake is now hooking up with Ryan Reynolds because she visited him in Boston, where he's filming a movie. Is the Green Lantern DVD coming out already? [Boston Herald]

Blake Lively makes tracks to Hub with Ryan Reynolds

Over the weekend, the two were spotted at sushi palace O Ya in the Leather District, and the next afternoon while Ryan was shooting “R.I.P.D.” in the Financial District, Blake dropped $270 on groceries at Five Seventy Market in the South End. According to our spies, either Reynolds recruited Blake to fill his fridge or she plans to stay for a while!

“She bought general groceries, mostly healthy stuff,” a store source told the Track. “And a couple of pumpkins. Some oats and grains, fruits and vegetables, and toothpaste. She bought a lot of stuff.”

The staff at Five Seventy claim the “Gossip Girl” was “super nice,” and always the style maven, Serena van der Woodsen’s alter ego was “dressed really nicely.”

Seeing as RyReyn wasn’t there to help Blake carry her loot, one of Five Seventy’s employees was happy to help the actress schlep her bags to the car, which was parked around the corner, we’re told.

The couple’s rumored romance began during their filming of “The Green Lantern,” when Ryan was still married but estranged from ScarJo back then.

Blake’s publicist, Leslie Sloane Zelnik, never responded to our queries about the budding romance.

  173. Rachel Maddow revealed her conflicted feelings about gay marriage in a new cover interview with the Hollywood Reporter.

The interview was published Wednesday. In it, Maddow said that, though she and her longtime partner, artist Susan Mikula, knew many people who had gotten married, the two didn't "feel any urgency" to join them. The reason, she said, was that she is ambivalent about the assimilationist aspect of gay marriage.

"I feel that gay people not being able to get married for generations, forever, meant that we came up with alternative ways of recognizing relationships," she told THR. "And I worry that if everybody has access to the same institutions that we lose the creativity of subcultures having to make it on their own. And I like gay culture."

Maddow has, of course, been a staunch supporter of same sex marriage rights. She even incurred some liberal wrath for continuing to note President Obama's opposition to marriage. However, she has not previously expressed her misgivings in such plain terms. In fact, during a 2010 interview, she said that she would "maybe" and "conceivably" get married.

In the interview, Maddow also revealed her love for George Clooney. She even broke one of her longstanding rules by agreeing to film a cameo for his new movie, "The Ides Of March."

"It's really hard to say no to him," she said. "So there I am, I'm a Hollywood sucker. I'll do anything for George Clooney."

  176. It's not stupid, there are a lot of people in the gay community who feel that way. Among other things, a lot of people feel that having certain rights shouldn't be dependent upon your marital status, or who feel that being shoehorned into traditional roles is not the way to go.

There are plenty of people in the gay community who are not interested in marriage, and some are afraid that if gay marriage becomes the norm they will feel pressure to conform.

I absolutely get what she means about the attraction of subcultures, and how something is lost if you go mainstream.

  177. It's not a matter of feeling that gays shouldn't have a good life, it's a matter of feeling that everyone should have a good life, regardless of the way they choose to live their own life. Gay/straight, married/living with a partner, having children/remaining childless, on and on.

Number doesn't matter. "A lot of people" doesn't turn something stupid into something smart.

As I've said, saying something like that is too stupid for words.

  181. Looks like obvious things like "marriage equality is about equal rights for all people" should be repeated over and over again, even for someone like Destiny.

  182. It's not a matter of feeling that gays shouldn't have a good life...

Please explain to Mr Clay Greene that marriage equality isn't really important because some gays don't care about getting married:

"Clay and his partner of 20 years, Harold, lived in California. Clay and Harold made diligent efforts to protect their legal rights, and had their legal paperwork in place--wills, powers of attorney, and medical directives, all naming each other. Harold was 88 years old and in frail medical condition, but still living at home with Clay, 77, who was in good health.

One evening, Harold fell down the front steps of their home and was taken to the hospital. Based on their medical directives alone, Clay should have been consulted in Harold's care from the first moment. Tragically, county and health care workers instead refused to allow Clay to see Harold in the hospital. The county then ultimately went one step further by isolating the couple from each other, placing the men in separate nursing homes.

Ignoring Clay's significant role in Harold's life, the county continued to treat Harold like he had no family and went to court seeking the power to make financial decisions on his behalf. Outrageously, the county represented to the judge that Clay was merely Harold's "roommate." The court denied their efforts, but did grant the county limited access to one of Harold's bank accounts to pay for his care.

What happened next is even more chilling.

Without authority, without determining the value of Clay and Harold's possessions accumulated over the course of their 20 years together or making any effort to determine which items belonged to whom, the county took everything Harold and Clay owned and auctioned off all of their belongings. Adding further insult to grave injury, the county removed Clay from his home and confined him to a nursing home against his will. The county workers then terminated Clay and Harold's lease and surrendered the home they had shared for many years to the landlord."

Destiny I have not agree with you on almost anything over the years but, I agree with you totally on this one.

Every gay person/couple don't want to get married, but I does not mean they should not have the right to get married.

Certain rights? That's so ignorant. Gay people must have equal civil rights as everyone else.
