'Gay closet is eating away at your soul'

Sean Maher
Sean Maher

“I was nervous coming here today because I’ve just never talked about it,” Sean Maher says, while sitting down to chat at Little Dom’s Italian bistro in Los Angeles’ trendy Los Feliz neighborhood, the area where the actor lives with Paul, his partner of nearly nine years, and their two children, Sophia Rose, 4, and Liam Xavier, 14 months. “But, it’s so liberating. It was interesting to be coming to have a conversation that I was always afraid to have.” Despite his trepidation, he adds with a big smile: “This is my coming out ball. I’ve been dying to do this.”

“I’ve never discussed it publicly,” the 36-year-old continues. “I’ve never been asked about it publicly, but I would be lying if I said I didn’t paint a different picture.” Maher says that not coming out wasn’t so much a choice as much as it was a reality of the business when he first came to L.A. fresh out of college back in 1997. Publicists working with him during his first Tinseltown role as the title character on Fox’s short-lived cop drama Ryan Caulfield: Year One assumed he was straight — and he didn’t tell them otherwise, out of fear. “I’m 22, I move to L.A., and it’s such a cliché, but the day I arrive, publicists from the show took me out to The Ivy for lunch,” he remembers. “They’re telling me, ‘You know, gosh, we’d really appreciate it if you could keep your girlfriend on the side because we want to appeal to the female demographic of the show.’”

Granted, Maher could have corrected his handlers, but in that instant, he decided not to. “At that moment, I didn’t think to say, ‘Oh, I’m gay,’ because right before I left New York [where he went to college at NYU], I had my manager tell me: ‘You need to get a girl on your arm or people will start talking.’ I remember telling him: ‘I’m gay.’ He had no idea. And he said: ‘All the more reason to get a girl on your arm.’ My agent was also like, ‘It’s best if you keep your options open. Maybe bisexual?’”

Despite pressure from his manager and agent, both of whom he has since parted ways with, it was ultimately Maher’s decision to stay in the closet, out of concern that he wouldn’t otherwise be able to book leading-man roles. “I kept thinking, This is my first show, I don’t want to get fired,” Maher says. “I’m thinking, What is the potential that if they caught wind that they had cast a gay lead actor that they would fire me? I was young, I was 22. I didn’t know anything. So that sort of started the idea of, okay, well, I’m working a lot, I guess I’ll just keep that gay part of my life on the back burner for now. I went so far as to sleep with women a couple times. It was a very confusing time for me.”

But being in the closet tormented Maher. “It was so exhausting, and I was so miserable,” Maher says. “I didn’t really have any life other than work and this façade I was putting on. So I kept my friends from college [where he was out] separate from my work friends, and that was very confusing. I just kept going on and on painting this picture of somebody I wasn’t. I didn’t have time for a personal relationship anyway. And you just don’t realize that it’s eating away at your soul.”

Although there have been famous cases of homophobia in Hollywood (ex. when Isaiah Washington called fellow actor T.R. Knight a gay slur on the set of ABC’s Grey’s Anatomy and was subsequently fired), Maher says he never encountered much hostility — mostly because he was never out and was very adept at acting straight. “Because I was never out, I was never addressed in a negative way to my face,” Maher says. “Although I witnessed a lot of it, whether it be making fun of gays or gay jokes. I just bit my tongue or looked the other way. That was part of the reason that I didn’t come out earlier — because there was an energy on set, and I felt like my being gay would have offset that, especially with the crew.”

Does Maher regret spending 14 years in the closet professionally? “I don’t think I have regrets,” he responds. “I do believe that sort of this journey took me to the place where I got and I don’t think I would feel so strongly about doing what I’m doing now had I not suffered for the years that I did.”

Having a family is what ultimately what made Maher want to be honest about his sexuality. “I have these beautiful children and this extraordinary family,” Maher says, “and to think in any way shape or form that that’s wrong or that there’s shame in that or that there’s something to hide actually turns my stomach.” Maher kept thinking about what daughter Sophia would say when she realized he was closeted professionally. “What would she think if I said, ‘Oh honey, you can’t come with me to work because they don’t know I have an adopted daughter and they don’t know that I’m gay.’ My children and our family, I’ve really never been as proud of anything in my life. I couldn’t be happier at this point in my life, and I feel like we’ve created this pretty extraordinary family.”

In the end, coming out publicly is what Maher feels he needed to do to tie his life together, personally and professionally. “Creatively, I feel so much more open and free, and I am so happy on The Playboy Club,” he says. “I think it’s because I’ve never been so open on set. All of the relationships that I have off-camera, I never would have allowed five years ago. It feels so liberating.”

You are talking about money again.
It would be harder for them to come out because they would lose more money than some TV actor.

October 08, 2011 3:01 PM

Not only, around them it turns an industry of present and future productions, Merchandising plans places of employment, from the appearances to the costume designer, a whole economic mechanism that stirs and it risks only because there is their name as guarantee to reenter with affairs of strive that they has done. without counting that very often the contracts that these stars do with the studios are, and full of clauses halter, and for more years for these motives that it is more difficulty for me

Will Smitt or Leo od Deep are actors. There are 100 or 1000 or 10000 other actors who can take their place. People would watch movies with and without them.

Their coming out as gay would hurt their income, nothing else.

Anonymous said...

That doesn't matter. There is only one way to be openly gay if you are a public figure - you let them know.

October 08, 2011 3:07 PM

but who establishes this? you cannot say: this is the correct way, or so or nothing we are not playing to monopoly

Anonymous said...

Last Will Smith movie is from 2008. Last 3 years movie industy is doing fine without him.

Anonymous said...

but who establishes this?

Gay people. Gay people can tell you what being out means.

not if you have a contract of three or four years and you have to do others two "Pirates" and from this they depend for that years salaries and places of employment, to that point it is a thing that concerns all and it aches to all those involved if it jumps

Anonymous said...

Without Deep they would produce and work on some other movie or use some other actor for "Pirates" - like they replaced leading actors in Spiderman and Superman and Batman and James Bond movies.

Anonymous said...

it is then only a matter of form, to say it when it is obvious and you already behave you so it is superfluous

Anonymous said...

Not true. There are people claiming that Wentworth Miller isn't gay. There are people and fans who presume that everyone is straight. Gay celebrities are closeted as long as they don't make a statement that shows /tells the public that they are gay.

Anonymous said...

come on !we know everybody that "Pirates " it is Jack Sparrow, superman is still Reevs, Spiderman Tobie the only true Bond is Connery, alone Batman changes, but it depends more from the director that from the actor, do you remember you the Batman of Clooney or the bond of Moore?

Anonymous said...

from the behavior of Quinto it is easily presumable his sexual orientation, he is brave enough to showit the fans they believe that even Elton Jhon is not gay, people speak and see what wants to see but someone doesn't have to behave him as the other ones they pretend, I repeat every one has his ways and times

Anonymous said...

Sorry 3:51 PM but facts are facts - movie franchises are changing leading actors all the time, movie industry doesn't depend on any actor.

Anonymous said...

I repeat every one has his ways and times

Everyone has his/her time, but the way is only one - to come out by saying or showing "I'm gay".

Anonymous said...

the facts are undoubtedly made, but must be explained and sets in the context, and to do it there is need of tangible and recent examples, you cannot say only: the cinema will go on the same! I hope for it really but the "here and now " must also be considered! it is as to say it is useless to cover himself this winter because will arrive from there another

Anonymous said...

You still don't understand. Speculations about someone's sexuality is one thing. Knowing that someone is gay is something very different and for that gay person must come out.

Anonymous said...

I keep on thinking that in a civil society is not necessary

You are very wrong about that. There is strength in numbers. There is big need for gay people to be accepted as "normal".
Kids are still killing themselves over being gay.
Kids are still tortured over being gay.

these are certainly facts, but "Gone whit the wind" would have been the same without Clarck Gable? and "On the Waterfront"without Brando?or"Some Like It Hot"without Marylin'?not all are easily replaceable and these are also facts

Anonymous said...

I keep on hoping in a society where a different sexual orientation is so normal not to be had to be explained, but I understands and they agree with you that the visibility today it is still important and the road is still long, therefore yes better saying it that no :)

Anonymous said...

There is no way of knowing what would have happened with other actors, those movies could have been better or worse. So that's pure speculation, NOT facts.

I have not said these films they would have been better or worse without these actors, I have said that they are hardly replaceable it is this the fact. imagine it to me Mickey Rooney to the place of Gable or James Stewart to the place of Brando, and I don't sincerely succeed in imagining anybody to the place of Marylin

Won't happen. Let's face it black people have the same rights as white but black and white society are very very seperate. Gays will also have all the rights very soon as straights but but will also remain seperate societies. Gay men such as Jake Gyllenhaal need to get their head out of their asses and help gay kids realize that their importance here on earth is just the same as anyone elses. We are God's people. I agree that it is much better to be completely out than to be in a glass closet. But I think actors who live in a glass closet deserve credit too--they are resisting the pressure in HW to conform by bearding--all you have to do is look at Luke Evans, who went from out to bearding, probably because it was the only way to get cast in action and adventure films.

I think of actors in the glass closet as a necessary step on the way to greater change. They will show that you can have a good career, maybe even be a leading man and be seen as a sex symbol, while younger, internet-savy fans know they are gay, like Quinto and Matt Bomer.

destiny said...

I've read that NPH's publicist did not not consult him before saying he "isn't of that persuasion" in response to questions about the gay rumors. I also read that she tried to persuade him to stay in the closet. Shortly thereafter he decided he wanted a gay man to handle his publicity, and switched to Simon Halls (Bomer's partner). I believe it was in an interview in the Advocate, but I can't find it online.

Anonymous said...

I believe that NPH's publicist wanted him to stay in the closet, but I don't believe he/she didn't talk with NPH about Perez, outing situation and what NPH wants to do about it.

No one deserves credit for being closeted.

They aren't resisting - they weren't lucky or interesting enough to get big offers like Luke Evans.

Early Weekend Estimates (Domestic)
Fri, Oct. 7 - Sun, Oct. 9

# Title weekend Locations Avg. Total Wks. Dist.
1 Real Steel $26,500,000 -- 3,440 -- $7,703 $26,500,000 1 Disney / DreamWorks
2 The Ides of March $10,500,000 -- 2,199 -- $4,775 $10,500,000 1 Sony / Columbia
3 Dolphin Tale $9,800,000 -30% 3,478 -37 $2,818 $49,709,645 3 Warner Bros.
4 Moneyball $7,700,000 -36% 3,018 25 $2,551 $49,453,178 3 Sony / Columbia

Disney's Real Steel managed to rake in a strong $8.550 million on Saturday, which means that it will have no problem claiming the #1 spot during its debut frame. Word of mouth at this point is healthy with nearly 16,000 Flixster users combining to give the robot flick a 79% approval rating. The debut certainly comes as a relief for star Hugh Jackman. The Aussie actor has had more than his share of disappointments outside of the X-Men franchise, but Real Steel isn't one of them.

The Ides of March is off to a good start thanks to $3.450 million on Friday. George Clooney's political thriller may not break the bank this weekend, but Oscar buzz will help it to thrive for weeks to come. Clooney's films tend to have great staying power simply because they skew older. Case in point: Michael Clayton opened to $10.3 million before finishing with $49 million. Word of mouth looks promising thanks to a combined approval rating of 84% from nearly 10,800 Flixster users.

I don't wish that. He has done some good stories. Someone said something here that I believe. If you are a public figure or celeb you are not gay in the public's eye until you offically come out..
Every celeb does have the right to make their own decisions but it sure is sweet when they make it offical. That's why my interest in Jake was so high. For me I love the coming out process. I really don't follow all this anymore because I am a big fan of anyone in particular. I sure wish Jake would come out but I am past the process of thinking that he will. He has that right. No he's not . He doesn't owe you anything .
People like Ted are part of the problem . Why ? 1. He calls his Blind Items Vices , by definition that is something bad. 90% of all his B.I. are about soemones sexuality , it's the main theme among all Blind Items out there . People might be all "it doesn't matter" but the speculation is there anyway. As long as it leads to a People Cover there is no normalisation. Back to Ted , he goes on and on about how he wants these actors out of the closet - but he would be out of a blog if that would be the case . He doesn't really want them out , he just wants blog hits

I'd so be a closeted actor. Idealism doesn't pay bills, money does.

I further think that the gay kids commiting suicide, now come out and save them thing is emotional blackmail. These kids are not saved by an actor 1000 miles away. They are saved my their family and community
I was bullied in school and having some actor tell me that everything is going to be better once you're out of school is not really going to stop classmates from locking someone in the classroom closet or having them wring out a dirty sponge over your head . It won't stop them from picking on you all the way from your home to the bus stop or from classroom to classroom, it's not going to stop them from not inviting you to birthdays or choosing you last for the team during sports

"As a pleasant contrast to the e-mails he receives through his website from right-wing Christians warning him that he’ll “die a horrible death," Jackson’s inbox is regularly flooded with messages from small-town teenage boys whom he’s inspired to come out. "One of them asked me to send him a picture, and he said he held it as he told his family because it gave him strength. A couple weeks later when his friend was going to come out, he let the friend hold my picture. More people being out is not just about stories like that, it is also about changing the culture so that we don't have bullies who go after gay kids. Bullies pick up from their parents, the culture and other kids that gay is bad. The more people are out in all walks of life the more accepting society will be.

kids will always be bullied , for being gay , small ,overweight, wearing glasses , being poor... It's not a new thing and it's not going to stop because you want it to stop . Reunited: Jake Gyllenhaal supports old co-star Michelle Williams at My Week With Marilyn premiere

They say a good friend will always come through for you.
And this proved to be true when Jake Gyllenhaal turned up at the premiere of My Week With Marilyn in New York tonight to support his old chum Michelle Williams.

The Brokeback Mountain hunk starred with her in the Oscar-winning hit, which told the story of two gay cowboys.

Michelle, 31, starred as Alma in the 2005 flick, who ended up getting married to Jake's boyfriend in the movie, who was played by tragic Heath Ledger.
She became close to the Australian on the set of the film, and they dated until 2007, having a daughter Matilda Rose in 2005. The cast had become so close they asked Jake Gyllenhaal to be her stepfather.

The friendship developed on-set between the pair carried on where they left off as they cuddled on the red carpet together.
Jake looked excited to see the new film, which documents the tense interaction between legendary actor Sir Laurence Olivier and Marilyn Monroe during production of The Prince and the Showgirl.

Michelle Williams looks wondrous in white at the pre-screening cocktail party for the premiere of My Week With Marilyn held at the Hudson Hotel on Sunday (October 9) in New York City.

The 31-year-old actress, who wore head-to-toe Dior to the New York Film Festival screening, was joined at the event by her Brokeback Mountain co-star Jake Gyllenhaal. Guests sipped Grey Goose at the cocktail party, before heading over to the premiere at Lincoln Center.

Michelle has garnered wonderful reviews for her portrayal of Marilyn Monroe.

“Michelle Williams gives a layered performance that goes beyond impersonation. Playing both the damaged, insecure woman and the sensual celebrity construct, Williams gets us on intimate terms with one of Hollywood’s most enduring and tragic icons,” wrote one reviewer for THR.

In case you missed it, check out the trailer for the film, which opens November 4.

Gray Goose is Ted Casablanca's code name for Austin Nichols in Toothy Tile blind items.

Anonymous said...

yes I know it but why JustJared brings it? is it an allusion, or is there something that calls this way?

Anonymous said...

Grey Goose is a brand of vodka

Anonymous said...

Gray Goose = Vodka

Anonymous said...

Damn, that has been indeed an unusual coincidence ! In a way or in the other truth always reaches you, poor Jake

Anonymous said...

Just Jared brings it up because it's his job to pimp companies that sponser events, Grey Goose vodka sponsers a shitload of events, just google it It's no different than him pimping shoes, bags, suits, sneakers and other stuff on his site.

BTW, Ted didn't come up with that name on his own, I know for a fact that someone on OMG suggested that name after they wrote him and asked isn't it time TT BF had a BV name too. Before then they discussed the name GG on the OMG as an alternative to Wild Turkey because Austin Nichols is the name of the label, or visa versa.

Austin Nichols=Wild Turkey whiskey, Grey Goose=Vodka, how clever!

BTW, Jake could have dressed up a bit.

Gay or bisexual?

In the early 1970s Freddie Mercury had a long-term relationship with Mary Austin, whom he had met through guitarist Brian May. He lived with Austin for several years in West Kensington. By the mid-1970s, however, the singer had begun an affair with a male American record executive at Elektra Records, which ultimately resulted in the end of his relationship with Austin.[54] Mercury and Austin nevertheless remained close friends through the years, with Mercury often referring to her as his only true friend. In a 1985 interview, Mercury said of Austin, "All my lovers asked me why they couldn't replace Mary [Austin], but it's simply impossible. The only friend I've got is Mary and I don't want anybody else. To me, she was my common-law wife. To me, it was a marriage. We believe in each other, that's enough for me."[55] He also wrote several songs about Austin, the most notable of which is "Love of My Life". Mercury was also the godfather of Mary's oldest son, Richard.[41]

During the early-to-mid-80s, he was romantically involved with Barbara Valentin, an Austrian actress,[56] who is featured in the video for "It's a Hard Life".[57] By 1985, he began another long-term relationship with a hairdresser named Jim Hutton. Hutton, who himself was tested HIV-positive in 1990,[58] lived with Mercury for the last six years of his life, nursed him during his illness and was present at his bedside when he died. Hutton claimed that Mercury died wearing a wedding band that Hutton had given him.[58] Hutton died from cancer on 1 January 2010.[59]

Elton John is the same generation as Freddie. Elton was "bisexual" and married to a woman. 70s were long time ago.

UK - Decriminalisation of homosexual acts: The 1967 Act

After almost ten years of campaigning, the Sexual Offences Bill was put before parliament in 1967 in order to implement some of the Wolfenden Committee's recommendations. Lord Arran, a sponsor of the Bill, made the following remarks at the third reading in the Lords:

Because of the Bill now to be enacted, perhaps a million human beings will be able to live in greater peace. I find this an awesome and marvellous thing. The late Oscar Wilde, on his release from Reading Gaol, wrote to a friend:

Yes, we shall win in the end; but the road will be long and red with monstrous martyrdoms.

My Lords, Mr. Wilde was right: the road has been long and the martyrdoms many, monstrous and bloody. Today, please God! sees the end of that road. I ask one thing and I ask it earnestly. I ask those who have, as it were, been in bondage and for whom the prison doors are now open to show their thanks by comporting themselves quietly and with dignity. This is no occasion for jubilation; certainly not for celebration. Any form of ostentatious behaviour; now or in the future any form of public flaunting, would be utterly distasteful and would, I believe, make the sponsors of the Bill regret that they have done what they have done. Homosexuals must continue to remember that while there may be nothing bad in being a homosexual, there is certainly nothing good. Lest the opponents of the Bill think that a new freedom, a new privileged class, has been created, let me remind them that no amount of legislation will prevent homosexuals from being the subject of dislike and derision, or at best of pity. We shall always, I fear, resent the odd man out. That is their burden for all time, and they must shoulder it like men—for men they are.
—Lord Arran

The Sexual Offences Act 1967 was accordingly passed. It maintained the general prohibitions on buggery and indecency between men, but provided for a limited decriminalisation of homosexual acts where three conditions were fulfilled. Those conditions were that the act had to be consensual, take place in private and involve only people that had attained the age of 21. This was a higher age of consent than that for heterosexual acts, which was set at 16. Further, "in private" limited participation in an act to two people. This condition was interpreted strictly by the courts, which took it to exclude acts taking place in a room in a hotel, for example, and in private homes where a third person was present (even if that person was in a different room).

God, I have learned indeed something, thanks. It's unbelievable as the world can foolishly be cruel at times. and even if we are not under those terrible conditions anymore (at least in the free world) there is still so much road to cross. Mr Wilde was indeed a brave man.

Anonymous said...

I expected to read something nice and encouraging from Lord Arran but "homosexuals must continue to remember that while there may be nothing bad in being a homosexual, there is certainly nothing good ... let me remind them that no amount of legislation will prevent homosexuals from being the subject of dislike and derision, or at best of pity" can't warm any (gay) heart.

Jake Gyllenhaal & His Beard!

Oh, c'mon now! We're talking about the one on his face, obviously!

Besides, she was Heath Ledger's beard in Brokeback Mountain, not his! Get your facts straight! HA!

Okay, settling down…

Last night, Jake Gyllenhaal and his facial hair came out to surpport his longtime friend Michelle Williams at the premiere of her new movie, My Week With Marilyn.

It's nice that they've stayed friends all these years. Wonder if she ever chats with Anne Hathaway the way he does?

Also, and more importantly … SHAVE JAKE!!!

I think most adult Gay folks don't give a hoot about what str8 Homophobic people think about them as long as they have equal rights and are protected from the from harm by the law.

Now when it comes to children that is a different story. It is our responibility as Gay adults to tell them that they are OK and that They are equal in God'd eyes.
Something Jake is certainly not doing.

Anonymous said...

...that They are equal in God'd eyes...

That's tricky when the Pope / the Church is saying that God doesn't like gays.
