Music + Soul + Sex

Tuesday, February 1, 2011

Last year, I made a big deal about Ricky Martin’s coming out.

Revisiting the blog piece today, I realize I was somehow evoking the spirit of the It Gets Better Project. And while I continue extremely critical of this campaign (for many reasons, not the least are its ageist and classist narratives), I do believe the visualization of imagined possibility is important. For the young boy who, like myself in my early teen years, finds himself living in rural México, seeing a public figure with pop culture prominence spanning a few decades might help in the process of imagining and/or visualizing what being a Brown man who loves other men might look like.

Later in the year, I wrote a piece titled “How Ricky Martin is Changing the Face of Latino Fatherhood,” based on Ricky and his two sons' (Valentino and Matteo) appearance on the cover of People En Español’s father’s day issue. Given People En Español’s circulation, the image of an openly gay Latino father and his children, would be in countless Latina/o supermarkets and living rooms. Yet again, the image of Ricky’s queer Latinidad was helping us imagine a more expansive Latinidad that includes more of us.

Musica+Alma+Sexo cover
With Ricky’s reemergence into the public light, we had the opportunity to see a queer Latino strike down racist stereotypes about inherent homophobia in our communities. Perhaps the best example was on The View when Ricky responded to Joy Behar’s suggestion that his culture kept him from coming out. In a moment that made him even more beautiful in my eyes, Ricky refuses to take the bait and simply states that people all over the world are struggling with their sexuality. (Thank you!)

This morning, Ricky's new album "Música + Alma + Sexo" hit stores and I typed faster than my queer fingers could to download it on iTunes. Refusing to shy away from the "sex" in sexuality by daring to have the word "Sexo" in the title of the album, I am excited to see where Ricky takes us as an openly queer historically sensual performer.

Watching two brown men in an affectionate embrace in the “Lo Mejor De Mi Vida Eres Tú” video, I’m pretty darn sure Ricky will continue to matter to me… and maybe a few other boys.

    Enough Already

    Getting closer to the truth
I look for a way to explain to the world
What I no longer know how to silence
As I let a tear escape
From this jail where feelings are punished
    Without pity,
Against all odds, I will be with you!

Enough already, putting my feelings in a jail cell
And deny myself of what I love
Enough already, of condemning the voice within me
And pretend that I am sincere
Fear doesn’t frighten me anymore, enough already.

    Reason has awakened me
The words that I kept in silence
    Got tired of waiting,
    My revolution begins here
In my hand I carry the flag
Which defends the heart, oh yeah
Against all odds, I will be with you!

Enough already, putting my feelings in a jail cell
And deny myself of what I love
Enough already, of condemning the voice within me
And pretend that I am sincere
Fear doesn’t frighten me anymore, enough already.

    Enough Already!

From here on I will be faithful to myself
    I will erase the pain
In the story of my life, each line screams Enough Already!

  15. Jake's PR and Austin are faking tweets to convince OMG and WFT2 posters that Jake and Austin broke up?

Of course. They set up 'sleeper' accounts on Twitter which they use to put everyone off. They also pay a fee to regular tweeters to make fake tweets, so that not all tweets come from the fake sleeper accounts. There's a mix so that the charade is not obvious.

    ReplyDelete
  16. And they do that because they care so much about OMG and WFT2 opinions? Why are we so important to Jake's PR?

    ReplyDelete
  17. It's not specifically targeted at those two sites. It's just a component of the overall JiS smokescreen.

  51. Professional lunatic Bear Grylls has confirmed that Love and Other Drugs star Jake Gyllenhaal will be the next Hollywood actor to join his adventure show Man vs Wild.

Bear — a man who's drunk his own wee and the warm blood of animals he's killed with his bare hands (he is amazing) — revealed that his yet-to-be-filmed collaboration with Jake came about because of an offhand remark the actor made on a talk show.

"Jake was just joking [about what it's like to be famous]," Bear told reporters during his recent trip to Sydney. "He was going, 'Yeah, it's great, I get whatever I want — if I get in trouble in the wild I just call Bear Grylls."

Bear and Jake had never actually met at that point, but it wasn't long before the former called up the latter and invited him to "put his money where his mouth is". And that, ladies and gentlemen, is why you never make jokes about Bear Grylls. The man is hardcore.

Other celebs to join Bear on his wacky adventures include Will Ferrell and Ben Stiller.

Jake Gyllenhaal will be in an episode of Man vs Wild

Amanda Seyfriend has revealed that she believes Leonardo DiCaprio is like a younger Robert De Niro.

Seyfried spoke to Access Hollywood about her upcoming film Red Riding Hood, stating that the cast and crew often found themselves starstruck by DiCaprio, one of the movie's producers.

"When [DiCaprio] came to visit there was a weird tension on set," Seyfried said. "Everybody was whispering, 'He's here! He's here!'

"You know, he's like a godfather. He's like De Niro to the younger generation of actors."

Seyfried also revealed that DiCaprio played a large role in casting the film.

"He was a big part of the casting process, which is good because his input is always wanted," she said. "He's been working for a long time and he makes great choices."

Leo's been extremely lucky. That's rare, really.

Jake Gyllenhaal is decked out in Nike gear while taking a jog around his neighborhood on Sunday (March 6) in Los Angeles.

The 30-year-old actor has been getting himself into shape with regular runs. On Friday, Jake took his dog Atticus for a jog while wearing a bright neon jacket.

Jake, who is currently gearing up for the April 1 release of his film Source Code, recently landed his next film role. He will star in the gritty cop drama End of Watch.

It is starting to become irritating that critics don't like Jake in MOST of his roles anymore. I for one think he was good in PoP i.e., the accent was spot on and he did a fine action job. Not saying the movie itself was a masterpiece though.

I remember in his early career, critics liked him. What happened? Why all the scepticism towards him now? His acting isn't getting much praise nowadays and I truly think that's not fair.

Source Code (2011, directed by Duncan Jones)

We're two films into his career, and it's pretty clear what turns Duncan Jones' crank. Like Moon before it, Source Code uses science fiction trappings to explore humanity's free will and survival instinct. And like Moon, Jones isn't afraid to apply DJ sensibilities to filmmaking, mashing up genres and sampling from the classics to try and create something that is still unmistakably his own.

Unlike Moon, though, Source Code struggles to escape the gravity of those influences, and Jones' voice at times gets lost in the noise. It's hardly what you'd call a sophomore slump - Source Code is entertaining enough, with some interesting ideas and a couple of great supporting performances - but it's not career-defining either. (At least, I hope not).

If Jones gets anything perfectly right, it's the opening minutes of the film. The precredits sequence is flat out great. Over a score that sounds like it's cribbed from a top-notch 70s paranoid political thriller you've never seen, Jones intercuts between swooping aerial shots of Chicago and a commuter train hurtling towards the city. The music, the pacing of the shots, all scream one thing: something capital-b Bad is going to happen.

After that, Jones tosses the audience straight into the deep end of the plot. Jake Gyllenhaal wakes up on the train and finds himself sitting across from a woman (Michelle Monaghan) he doesn't know. In fact he doesn't even know how he got on the train - last thing he remembers, he was piloting a chopper in Afghanistan. The reflection he sees in the window isn't his face, and Monaghan keeps calling him by someone else's name. He's disoriented, angry, very nearly in a blind panic, and then boom.

No, literally, boom. The train blows up, killing everyone aboard. And then after blowing up, Gyllenhaal finds himself back in uniform, locked in a strange capsule with no memory of how he got there either while a different woman on a monitor grills him on the details of what he just saw...

From there, things settle down into a rhythm. Gyllenhaal is part of a covert anti-terrorism initiative trying to thwart the next attack by the train bomber. Through the magic of quantum physics, he's able to re-live the last 8 minutes of the life of one of the train's passengers over and over (and over and over) again, to try and find clues pointing to the identity of the terrorist. As he does so though, and despite being told repeatedly by his superiors that the people upon the train are already dead and that there's nothing he can do for them, Gyllenhaal starts to care about his fellow passengers (especially, of course, the pretty one sitting across from him) and tries to save them as well as complete his mission.

    ReplyDelete
  91. If that sounds like a Frankenstein's monster sewn together from equal parts 12 Monkeys and Groundhog Day, well, that's because it is. But there's a spark created by the collision of those two concepts that propels the film, and the script gives enough credit to the audience's intelligence that it never bogs itself down with exposition, although a large degree of credit for that needs to go to the always awesome Jeffrey Wright. He plays the scientist in charge of the project with a preening intellect that is simply astounding to watch. His one attempt to explain to Gyllenhaal how the project works lasts all of about thirty seconds and simultaneously gives you just enough information to suspend your disbelief while also making it clear how tired he is of dumbing down his genius for lesser minds. It's phenomenal, as is the rest of his performance. Why Wright isn't a bigger star is one of the great mysteries of modern Hollywood.

The other standout performance is Vera Farmiga as the face on the monitor, Gyllenhaal's liaison with the project HQ. Like Gyllenhaal, she finds herself trapped between her orders and basic human decency, but unlike Gyllenhaal her dilemma is a lot less theoretical. She takes what might have been a very jarring transition from ruthless model of military efficiency to bleeding heart, and makes it seem natural and inevitable. It's not a showy performance, but it's a very, very good one.

As for the leads? Well... Monaghan's sweet-natured cutie role is certainly necessary to get you as invested as Gyllenhaal in the fate of the passengers, but it doesn't give her a whole lot to do other than smile and occasionally scrunch up her brow in confusion. And good ole Jake, bless his heart, just doesn't have the over-the-top personality of a Willis or a Cage to really ever become a full-blown Everyman action hero, but in a role like this which is lighter on action and heavier on emoting, he's entirely adequate.

There's one other thing that makes Source Code slightly more than the sum of its parts, and that's its metaphysical underpinnings. Speaking as someone with a great love for pop culture bastardizations of quantum physics, this movie handles the whole 'multiple universes' concept as well as any big Hollywood production I've ever seen. Every time Gyllenhaal goes 'back' to those eight minutes, his choices create a new universe branching out from the old one. Since they all end in the train blowing up anyway (thus collapsing the wave, if you're following this and your eyes didn't glaze over a couple of sentences ago) Wright dismisses any of Gyllenhaal's concerns as nonsense. There's only one 'real' universe, and it's the one Wright is standing in. But as Gyllenhaal keeps pushing the envelope on what he can get done and get away with in those eight minutes, he becomes more and more certain that these universes aren't just shadows of probability, and are just as real as the world he's being sent from. The payoff on it all is really quite well done, even if it does raise some curious moral questions.

In short, Source Code is a fairly well-shot (one unfortunate CGI shot aside), reasonably clever movie with a couple of really good performances. Just so long as you aren't expecting to have your mind blown, it's worth checking out.

  92. Jake is a very good actor in the right genres i.e. drama and comedy. Not action. I don't find him believable, it happened with PoP and it's happening again with the trailers for Source Code. If I were Jake I'd rather be good/great in the genres that suit me than "adequate" in action movies or thrillers.

  95. "Every time Gyllenhaal goes 'back' to those eight minutes, his choices create a new universe branching out from the old one."

This has been done millions of times in tv and movies. There is even an episode of The X-files with the same plot.
The only way they could make this interesting is not ending the whole thing in a conventional way, but being an American mainstream movie,I very doubt this will be the case.

I'm eager to see this movie, though.

I agree, there is just something a bit controlled or inhibited about Jake's performances, unlike in the past. I still think he is good, but he doesn't really shine.

When you think of the actors of jake's generation who get all the attention, yes, some of them may be gay and bearding too, but the bearding doesn't seem to consume their lives the way it does with Jake, and they certainly aren't tabloid fodder.

People seem to be the most interested in actors who are perceived as cool, and kind of a bit mysterious. For example, it seems like people are a little less interested in Alexander Skaarsgard since he took up with Kate Bosworth and they were seen on gossip sites practically every day.

    ReplyDelete
  98. I don't think reviews are so bad. The problem is that Jake's movies don't make money (you don't care about reviews in that case) and his roles are too "middle of the road" for critics to care about him as an actor.

hmmm, I think you have something there. I agree with one of the above posters that Jake needs to do and edgy role. Something to take him clearly out of his comfort zone. Does not have to be horror or a vicious villian, just something to push the boundaries. A likable, diablical villian just might work.
but he would have to be bi also. LOL hey let's push the boundaries, ok.

  102. BlindGossip – We really thought that this successful funny man was done with the whole bearding mishegas. After all, he did get a divorce and has been pretty much living as an openly gay man. So why in the world would he get married again? Well, consider this mystery solved. He is still gay, but he believes he was more successful when people perceived him as a heterosexual man. His next live-action film is scheduled for release in 2012, so we’ll see then if the whole married man act pays off at the box office.

  104. Personally, this "people" I couldn't care less about an actor's cool factor, just if they are good in their roles, or I like the kind of roles they choose. That's what makes the cool factor and/or mystery, not their personal lives. With that thinking, Jake is keeping mystery about himself, so ... where's the problem?

    ReplyDelete
  105. "Why Wright isn't a bigger star is one of the great mysteries of modern Hollywood."

I totally agree. He has an Emmy and Tony for the Angels in America, but he should have received an Oscar for Basquiat. Jeffrey Wright is a spectacularly brilliant actor, as maleable, committed and daring as Johnny Depp.

    He definitely is.

And even though I think Franco is a pretentious douche, he's serious about his acting career. He'll be fine. As for Jake, I'm really not sure how he'll fare in the future. He's solid enough, but he needs to get better. I see similarities with DiCaprio's acting nowadays, but DiCaprio is in amazing productions, Jake isn't.

  127. Not really, i'm on gossip boards where you are made to register and people posted about Tiger cheating, it was an open secret.

If you click on people's avatar's on the site you can see a profile, true the profile can be made up but you have to submit a legit e-mail address. People can easily teace someone, here it's all anon., much more reason to plant BS.

PS: Tiger's penchant for porn and skanks, etc were talked about before he married, even in mainstream media, when he married all thought it would end.

Hell even BI's about him were guessed to be him, Tiger made a lot of $$$$ for Golf, therefore most of his fans and chose to ignore the chatter.

On Saturday, March 12, Moviefone will sit down with 'Source Code' stars Gyllenhaal and Monaghan during the SXSW festival in Austin, Texas, to answer your questions.

Ask Gyllenhaal what it was like to once again play a soldier in a movie or ask Monaghan about the stunts she had to perform. Ask them anything you'd like!

Leave your questions in the comments with your name and location.

Then check back on Monday, March 28, to see if they answered your question!

  159. Anyone watch Glee? Last night's episode was very gay friendly (as is the entire show) with one of the main plots being about two girls figuring out their feelings for each other. Very emotional stuff.

The other had Chris Colfer's character getting the sex talk from his dad. I think it was the first time I've ever seen a scene where "the talk" was given to a gay teen. It was a powerful message that will be very meaningful to kids (gay or straight) watching the show. "You matter"

  165. On last night's Glee, Burt Hummel had a talk with Kurt about the birds and the bees. It'd be great if all gay teens (or teens in general) had a parent who cared this much.

    Said Burt:

"When you're intimate with someone in that way, you gotta know that you're exposing yourself. You're never gonna be more vulnerable, and that scares the hell out of a lot of guys...With two guys you've got two people who think that sex is just sex. It's gonna be easier to come by and once you start, you aren't gonna want to stop. You gotta know that it means something. It's doing something to you, to your heart, to your self-esteem, even though it feels like you're just having fun...When you're ready, I want you to be able to do everything. But when you're ready, I want you to use it as a way to connect to another person. Don't throw yourself around like you don't matter, because you matter."

    ReplyDelete
  181. It is believed that BT1 is Austin's. Austin's father is blond as was his nephew in a pic where he was small.

The child in the Paris pic and the PoP crew picture is blond and the approximate size that BT would be at those times. In Austin's twitpic during famous Nashville week with Swift, the small blond tot that the Jake-could be is looking at could also be BT.

These kids aren't going to have a sign on their clothes that screams I'm BT. But for those who think Jake can't be proud of his kid(S) this could be his way of getting them seen without a way to "prove" they are his.

And for those who are denying they could be his kids, that would be a well thought out plan that Jake just might have for once. Because it is fooling the doubters.
