Make up or cheap bronzer not put on profesionally. Jake's complextion is pale like the rest of his family and is probably sensitive to the sun hence the bronzer to make him look "healthier".

Ironically Jake's career could end up like Ryan Phillipe's. A string of forgettable movies and a different blond on his arm every year mixed in with going out with the guys and getting your pic taken while he's drunk. I hope that doesn't happen. Believe it or not, but The Tourist slowly beomes a box office hit internationally.
Black Swan climed up a few spots from last week and Blue Valentine made an impressive 1 mill. dollars in just a few theaters.

Not only Michelle, but Ryan and James Franco too. Jake tried with video game adaptions and mainstream romcoms which should have been sure hits, but instead crashed and burned over and over.
I saw Blue Valentine yesterday. Michelle and Ryan are excellent. Both have a highly naturalistic style of acting that works perfectly for this realistic film depicting the start and end of a relationship.
I was surprised by how attractive Ryan is. Good god--he's very sexy (when the character was younger--not older). That took me by surprise.
I also thought Ryan looked good in the previews of Blue Valentine.

To be fair to Jake (and I'm no fan) there really doesn't seem to be that many really big crash hot stars right now. It's almost like those days are gone.
Franco actually sands out as the guy taking on some great non-commercial but interesting roles. This has always been Franco's genius. Jake could have built on Donnie Darko in the same style even after BBM. Instead he seems to have allowed himself to be guided - or misguided - by Hollywood etiqette and convention, pehaps by his handlers, his family, himself, or a mixture.
What he is good at is comedy should go down this route if he stays in acting because he is genuinely funny and quick with it.

I think Natalie, Anne, etc. have been doing Jake favors. I think he is having a hard time, and they know it, since POP failed.
There was a time when people were interested in Jake in part because of the sexual ambiguity and TT stories, but he killed that with Reeke. He used to be a quirky indie actor, and then he killed that with trying to do films he was not suited for, or weren't good, and, after BBM, holding out for too much money (and probably holding out too much for "prestige" or "big" movies) when he should have been jumping into the fire and doing all he could while he was the "it" boy for fifteen minutes.
Now he has become yet another of the many HW lying phonies trying to make it up the food chain. As a result, he's probably not getting many film offers, if any, so it's probably not fair at this point to blame "laziness."

I think that's right. Instead of hanging out with single, hot actresses, he hangs out, or is contantly associated with females who are already hooked up with other guys... or women who are mommies like Busy Phillips, Maggie, Michelle, now it will be Natalie. Probably, Anne soon. Odd, when you think about how he wants to push his heterosexual, "I'm on the prowl," vibe.
Maybe it's just a coincident that many of his close pals are moms or moms to be? But it's kinda weird/funny. I do think he genuinely enjoys Ms Philipp's company, as well as his sister's, NP's or AH's. I do agree with whoever said that he seems indifferent towards MW though.
Did you notice in what a great mood he seemed to be presenting to NP? Very comfortable. Compare that to the BV screening for MW. He seemed uncomfortable with her when she, IMO, inappropriately invaded his private space. It's still nice he supported her.

Looks like a lot of great minds do think alike. It normally would be Austin and beard, but he is back in NC so Jake is probably paling around with Busy and company. He went to her daughter's birthday party so for those of us who believe Jake is a Daddy, I'm sure the main thing they have in common is that their kids are friends. Prior to Busy having a child in August 2008, you didn't see Jake hanging around her even tough they were both godparents to Matilda. Sorry, I don't see this Career Mess you speak about. Right now Jake is staring in movies. Being the star says alot, or do you know this? This translate to more money and prestiege. I do understand and agree with you that he has not given a Oscar worthy performance in some time now, but, in ones career, this may come around once or Never. Then some get passed up over and over who do give oscar worthy performances. Look at your girl Jennifer A. She is making money and do the same damn movies and charactor over and over. She is getting paid though, Right?? No oscar worthy perf., no oscar worthy film. So many actors take this route. Then some stay indie stars for years, not making the big bucks, names floating around the oscars at times, but most don't win.
Besides there are so many lame movies being made and HW continue to not have a clue of what the movie going public want.
It's all a chance, a crap shoot to be in an Oscar worthy movie and win an Oscar worthy role. Then the actor has to loose themselves in that role.

In case you have not noticed Jake has no movies lined up after Source Code which has already filmed. Even if he started a film today it would be next year or year end at best before we see it. His bankability is not good at the moment. We measure his status today versus our expectation of what he could achieve after that tremendous performance in Brokeback. When nothing else has come close you begin to wonder if it was a fluke. Or if Ang Lee was the only one that could pull such a performance out of him. I think Jakes priorities changed and acting is just not that important to him anymore.
