This past weekend, the New Yorker held its annual festival, which -- as always -- includes a multitude of speakers and panels discussing a variety of topics. Top players in all professions were represented, including Stephen King, Malcolm Gladwell, Jake Gyllenhaal and Regina Spektor -- all chatting about themselves and their areas of expertise. Our favorite, though, would have to have been Cynthia Nixon on the panel discussion "Love and Obstacles: The Case for Gay Marriage."
Ms. Nixon, who is most known for her role has Miranda Hobbes in Sex and the City, and now is engaged to education activist Christine Marinoni, stole our hearts with her rather calm, well made argument. Not only does she make a good case, she makes an example of how to make said point.
“Gay people who want to marry have no desire to redefine marriage in any way. When women got the vote, they did not redefine voting. When African-Americans got the right to sit at a lunch counter alongside white people, they did not redefine eating out. They were simply invited to the table. And that is all we want to do. We have no desire to change marriage. We want to be entitled to not only the same privileges, but the same responsibilities as straight people.”

It turns out the actor is a voracious chef: he most recently whipped up a veal stew. "I love to read cookbooks and I subscribe to a lot of cooking magazines. Latest Oscar predictions: Lead actor
Right now it looks like Colin Firth is far ahead in the Academy Award race for lead actor.
All Oscarologists know that voters are suckers for actors who portray real-life characters (Forest Whittaker in "Last King of Scotland," Philip Seymour Hoffman in "Capote"), especially ones with handicaps (Jamie Foxx in "Ray," Geoffrey Rush in "Shine"). In "The King's Speech," Firth portrays Britain's monarch George VI struggling to overcome a stammer while rallying his countrymen to fight World War II.
Firth has something else going for him — the old Oscar Makeup Rule: If you lose one year, don't worry, you'll win the next. All of these stars (plus many others) won an Academy Award one year after being a losing nominee: Russell Crowe (triumphed for "Gladiator" after losing for "The Insider"), Jack Nicholson (won for "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" after losing for "Chinatown"), Nicole Kidman (won for "The Hours" after losing for "Moulin Rouge!"), etc. Last year Firth lost for "A Single Man."
In addition, "The King's Speech" is a top contender for best picture, possibly even the front-runner to win. Academy voters love to give away an acting Oscar along with best picture (Russell Crowe in "Gladiator," Kevin Spacey in "American Beauty").
But that's also true of James Franco in "127 Hours," which will certainly be nominated for best picture. Arguably, he portrays a handicapped person too, since he chops off his arm while stuck in a canyon, and a real-life one at that (based on the ordeal of hiker Aron Ralston). He benefits a bit from the Oscar Makeup Rule as well, not as a past nominee, but as someone who should've nabbed the supporting slot for "Milk" in 2008, but got snubbed.
There's a third serious contender in this race: Jeff Bridges in the Coen brothers' "True Grit," which probably will be nommed for best picture. It's also a proven vehicle for Oscar glory since John Wayne triumphed in the role in 1969. Having won last year for "Crazy Heart," he wouldn't benefit from the Oscar Makeup Rule, but from the Oscar Bandwagon Effect that earned Tom Hanks ("Philadelphia," "Forrest Gump") and Spencer Tracy ("Captains Courageous," "Boys Town") consecutive victories.

One of the most respected film festivals in the US, the American Film Institute's AFI Fest announced on Wednesday its eight red carpet gala screenings for the upcoming 24th annual event in Los Angeles, November 4-11.
The opening night selection is the world premiere of Love and Other Drugs, directed by Edward Zwick (Blood Diamond) and starring Anne Hathaway and Jake Gyllenhaal as mismatched lovers. Black Swan starring Natalie Portman and directed by Darren Aronofsky (The Wrestler) will close the eight-day event.
For the Tribute Selection, Toronto festival winner The King's Speech will honor director Tom Hooper (The Damned United, John Adams) and star Colin Firth as the stuttering King George VI and Geoffrey Rush as the Australian speech therapist. The film will be released in theaters November 26. Firth is considered an early candidate for an Oscar for this role.
The premier film festival attracts film industry players and actors with the American Film Market occuring concurrently in nearby Santa Monica and is attended by 7,000 people from 70 countries. AFI Fest is the only US film festival with a FIAPF (Fédération Internationale des Associations de Producteurs de Films) accreditation.

With horrific incidents like THIS making headlines, it's heartening to know that there are families who do the right thing for kids who experiment with gender roles at a young age.
The Kilodavis family has welcomed their son Dyson's desire to dress like a princess with open arms, celebrating it in fact with a children's book authored by his mother Cheryl Kilodavis. Dyson's school now uses the book as an anti-bullying tool.

Before Halloween, Dyson's teacher called everyone in the school and informed them all that Dyson would be a Princess Boy. As the Chef opened the door to one of my favorite pizzaria’s in Brooklyn (Franny’s) I noticed the man behind me. He was well dressed, tall, and sporting a beard like the Chef. We all walked into Franny’s together and I soon realized that the well dressed man who had walked in with our group was in fact, Jake Gyllenhaal. He was accompanied by Anne Hathaway and soon both of our groups would be stuffing our faces with delicious pizza and Lambrusco next to one another.
This post isn’t about Jake Gyllenhaal though, nor is it about a celebrity sighting. I am a terrible terrible celebrity stalker. iphones take shitty pictures in the dark and even if they didn’t I wouldn’t feel comfortable trying to take a pic of a total stranger. Too invasive for the likes of me. Unless of course it was Ewan McGregor…mmmmmm…..Ewan.

Loody: Yeah I saw “Love and Other Drugs” at a preview screening about a month ago. It was an okay film, nothing to write home about, though much of its appeal is due to the likability of the two leads and their chemistry. Still this is not an Oscar contender – even with the praise Hathaway has received. It may very well prove to be a solid hit though.
Doc: I saw it at a free screening recently. Sorry, but the film’s exploration of the pursuits of these drug companies is peripheral at best. It’s decidedly a boilerplate, cliche-ridden romantic dramedy. Gyllenhaal has never been more charming and whoa do he and Hathaway spend a lot of the movie naked, but I have a hard time believing the film is going to be nominated for any Oscars.

The film probably won´t win any Oscars but I think it will be a Box Office for Jake (and everyone involved). And IMO at the moment this is what Jake needs more than awards.
BTW according to Variety he is interested in participating in K. Bigelows next film - among some other A-listers. Lets wait and see how this works out for him.

While a handful of high-profile actors being interested in the same movie is nothing new, what is becoming more apparent is the effect certain casting decisions are having on other upcoming projects.
After "The Hurt Locker," it's not surprising that actors want to work with Kathryn Bigelow and Mark Boal on their next project, but even for jaded Hollywood, the roster of actors they've been meeting with is impressive. Will Smith, Matt Damon, Leonardo DiCaprio, Sean Penn, Christian Bale, Javier Bardem and Jake Gyllenhaal have either asked Bigelow and Boal for a look at the script or taken meetings to discuss the film.
That's in addition to Tom Hanks and Johnny Depp, who are also interested in the project, "Triple Frontier." Since there are four lead roles, there could be various powerhouse combinations. And since many of these thesps are planning other films, the casting could create a ripple effect on a platoon of projects.
But don't hit the panic button yet. As one agent reminds, "It's such a fragile business right now that until you are on a set and shooting, nothing is real."
Depp is attached to "Dark Shadows" and "The Lone Ranger"; Damon is onboard for "We Bought a Zoo" and a Robert Kennedy biopic; and there are a slew of films on DiCaprio's plate, including "Hoover," with Clint Eastwood set to helm.
"Decisions like these can completely flip the city upside down," one rep said. "It's not just because these actors are among the few who can greenlight certain films -- it's also because any actor might be willing to pull out of a movie for the chance to work with Johnny Depp and Tom Hanks in the same film."
On the other hand, that casting is hardly set in stone. "Triple Frontier" is set in the border zone of Paraguay, Argentina and Brazil where the Iguazu and Parana rivers converge, a haven for organized crime. Paramount is distribbing.
Other films currently casting could similarly cause ripple effects. Alfonso Cuaron's search to find the femme lead for 3D space pic "Gravity" had a number of names circling the role including Natalie Portman and Angelina Jolie. The part was eventually offered to Sandra Bullock, who is in talks, but the uncertainty threatened to cause more upheavals.
And Tom Hardy, whose star has been rising after perfs in "Bronson" and "Inception," may reteam with Christopher Nolan in the untitled Batman movie. While a Batman role may be hard to turn down, Hardy was set to play Mad Max in "Mad Max: Fury Road," which will now be pushed back until Hardy's schedule has freed up.

But that only means there's more room this week to speculate about John Travolta's on-going "secret gay spa subculture" sex romps!

A source very close to both Christina Aguilera and Samantha Ronson tells X17online exclusively that the singer and the DJ are taking their friendship to the next level.

I’ve seen the film too and like others, I agree that there is no way this is an Oscar contender. Also, I didn’t think Anne’s character was likable or easy to relate to. She was just rather annoying. It’s Jakes movie though. Love & Other Drugs is as much about Hathaway as Up In the Air was about Farmiga. IMO, Hank Azaria is the best thing about the entire film.
I also don’t think this film will make much money. Most of the people in my screening’s reactions were pretty lukewarm saying “It was fine, I’m glad I didn’t pay for it though”

Seems not only some Babblers didn't really like LAOD, some OMGers who saw it at a pre screening didn't like it that much either. What happened to Jake's ability to choose good scripts? I was hoping LAOD would be a gem, but all signs point to mediocre. Another disappointment is Duncan's bad mouting Source Code. And he's the director. Very disappointing.
