Love and Obstacles

Cynthia Nixon and family

October 4, 2010

This past weekend, the New Yorker held its annual festival, which -- as always -- includes a multitude of speakers and panels discussing a variety of topics. Top players in all professions were represented, including Stephen King, Malcolm Gladwell, Jake Gyllenhaal and Regina Spektor -- all chatting about themselves and their areas of expertise. Our favorite, though, would have to have been Cynthia Nixon on the panel discussion "Love and Obstacles: The Case for Gay Marriage."

Ms. Nixon, who is most known for her role has Miranda Hobbes in Sex and the City, and now is engaged to education activist Christine Marinoni, stole our hearts with her rather calm, well made argument. Not only does she make a good case, she makes an example of how to make said point.

“Gay people who want to marry have no desire to redefine marriage in any way. When women got the vote, they did not redefine voting. When African-Americans got the right to sit at a lunch counter alongside white people, they did not redefine eating out. They were simply invited to the table. And that is all we want to do. We have no desire to change marriage. We want to be entitled to not only the same privileges, but the same responsibilities as straight people.”

I cannot believe Anderson still refuses to come out publicly. I know he has been all over the recent suicides cases of young Gay kids but his coming out publicly would be huge. He is a well respected reporter. I am sure he is concerned about his career but I don't see him having to stand in the unemployment line if CNN screws him over. Plus CNN would look like crap.

Anonymous said...

I think it must be Anderson's own decision not to officialy come out and I don't think it's because he's afraid of losing his job. idk, maybe as a "news" guy he's afraid he'll become the story instead of a reporter. But then again, Rachel Maddow is out and proud and does well at MSNBC.

I Think Jake is in NY because most of his family lives here. Isn’t Maggie in England filming or about to film. Maybe he is staying with them before they go or he is hanging out with Peter, Ramona and his mom while Maggie is away.

I don’t buy that there is a BT. Sandy could hide Louis for a few months, she couldn’t do that for years. Unless BT is raised without him around, Jake would be caught with the child. The only way is if the kid was a mute. One call for “Daddy” and it is over.

Anonymous said...

Anderson could not travel to certain countries if he stated he was gay. It would be a death sentence.

Or, maybe he thinks it isn’t anyones business. Unless I’m dating him, it isn’t my business who shares his bed.

Anonymous said...

We know who shares his bed.

Anonymous said...

it isn’t my business who shares his bed.

"Coming out" does not mean anyone has to share details of their sex lives. I don't know why that myth persists. There's a different standard for straight people and for gays - if you know someone is straight, do you automatically think about who shares their bed? When it comes to gay people, a lot of the public can't seem to think of them as anything but sexual beings instead of just human beings.

Mumbai, October 11, 2010

Maggie Gyllenhaal, who played Batman’s love interest in The Dark Knight (2008), arrives in Mumbai today to lend a helping hand to the city’s homeless children. Esprit, in association with SOS children’s villages — one of the world’s largest orphan and abandoned children’s charity, is
bringing down the Hollywood actor and her actor husband, Peter Sarsgaard, both global brand ambassadors for SOS, along with Esprit CEO, Ronald Van Der Vis to inaugurate the SOS Alibaug Children’s Village. This area will focus on improving the state of orphans and underprivileged children in the country.

Gyllenhaal says, “Despite the dynamic economic development, it may be hard to accept that India has the largest population of street children in the world with at least 18 million living and working on the streets. There are approximately 2,50,000 in Mumbai alone.”

The village, financed by Esprit as a part of their CSR activities, falls under the campaign Big Bang. According to them, the banging of a drum is universally recognised as a symbol of celebration. Eleven Esprit stores around the world will house a Super Drum, where people will be made aware of the situation of homeless children and asked to bang the drum. Esprit will donate another 500,000 euros to the village when three million bangs have been hit. The campaign will commence on November 13.

“The street kids in Mumbai and elsewhere in the world are denied the right to a family. Protecting their rights is a universal responsibility that requires global commitment from us all,” adds Gyllenhaal. SOS currently reaches out to 132 countries. Gyllenhaal and her husband will inaugurate the village with a bhoomi puja.

Blind Vice: This Star Needs a Sex Swing, Stat!

Oded Good-Head is quite the good media pot stirrer. He knows how to stay relevant considering he hasn't done much career wise in forever, like twat away on Twitter to get himself press.

But on that rare occasion the multifaceted hottie does book his bulky self a gig, he makes sure he has three things waiting for him in his dressing room: magnum condoms, a sex swing, and Jujubes.

RELATED: Oded Pulls a Toothy, Only Bigger!

Yes, that infamous dressing room where Oded first made his B.V. debut—he was caught on his knees servicing another dude, and by his manager no less—has become a debauched cave of, well, not love.

Sources who have dealt with OGH recently tell us they had to make sure ten boxes of magnum condoms were on hand, presumably to go with said sex swing—that this poor runner had to go to a sex shop and purchase himself specifically at Oded's request!

We're guessing the Jujube candy would be used post-coital, for whichever lucky lady or gentleman took a ride with O.

Yes, Oded is a platinum member of his little down low club, but he bangs chicks every now and then too—and then blabs about it to all his straight buddies so he can keep up that macho persona.

A couple ladies have been rather famous, too, which makes Good-Head shout or tweet his tales for everyone (especially the press) to hear or read.

So sad.

It's only a matter of time before Oded Good-Head joins Crotch Uh-Lastic in the Hollywood nut house. You can only hide your true self for so long, and O. is slippin'.

"If you know someone is straight, do you automatically think about who shares their bed?"

Yes, but I’m a gossipy bitch!

But, you MISSED the point. The point is that unless I’m in a sexual relationship with a person, it doesn’t matter if they are gay are straight. If they want to tell me, fine, but if not, that’s fine too. I like a person because how they treat me, not who they sleep with.

_____

I guess Jake and Mom are hanging out with Ramona while her parents are away.

Sorry, but I still think you are the one missing the point. Coming out is not about getting people to like you, - and it's not about finding out who someone is sleeping with. You're still concentrating on the sexual aspect. The reason it is important for people to come out is that it puts a human face - not a sexual face - on what a lot of the world still views as "abnormal" or "perverse." It's great that you judge people by how they treat you. But, sadly, much of the world doesn't think the way you do. That being said, I don't believe in outing people and I think there are some people, like Anderson, who live in pretty transparent glass closets, who are doing the best they can and I'm not going to criticize them.

Isaac Katz, Son Of 'Proud Bigot' Professor Jonathan Katz, Comes Out

Isaac Katz, the son of Washington University physics professor and notorious bigot Jonathan Katz, is gay. And he just told an entire newspaper audience about it — including how, three years ago, he tried killing himself.
...
So what does young Isaac, a new University of Pennsylvania cum laude grad, think about daddy's bigotry?

"My father is a physics professor at Washington University. Years ago, he wrote an article on his personal website in which he justified homophobia as a "moral judgment" about a person's actions. Even if one does not accept Judeo-Christian morality, he wrote, gays should be shunned because they are physically and morally responsible for the AIDS epidemic. Any person "cursed with unnatural sexual desires" should suppress those desires. Further, even if gays are thoroughly safe and monogamous, they are still morally culpable for the promiscuity that spread AIDS in the past, just as people who join the Ku Klux Klan without physically engaging in violence still share the responsibility for past Klan actions. Though one should "not engage in violence against homosexuals," my father argued, one should 'stay away from them." The last line of the essay is as follows: "I am a homophobe, and proud."

It is harder to stay away from homosexuals, I would imagine, when your son is one. When I told my dad I was gay, his immediate response was, "No, you're not." (My mom, by the way, was and is more supportive.) When my insistence finally overrode his denials, he echoed his online essay that I should deny who I am rather than to engage in an act so abhorrent as to love another man.

[...] I can't change my dad's thoughts about homosexuality overnight. Underlying his opinions and those of other homophobes is the belief that homosexuality is not ingrained within gay men and women, that someone attracted to people of the same sex should simply choose not to be a "practicing homosexual." That this idea is absurd should be obvious to all straight people, unless they can identify a time in their lives when they chose to be straight and not gay, and would gladly become intimate with a same-sex partner if only they chose to."

Is it possible that CNN requires Anderson Cooper to not admit that he's gay?
---
I would say it wouldn't be explicitly in his contract that he can't ever come out as gay while at CNN.

I've heard tell of Hollywood gay actors have contract clauses that forbid them from making major personal announcements (which is obviously really targeted at coming out) during some stretch of time (like in the time between when they are hired for a big money movie and the movie's opening).

Anonymous said...

Regardless, your sexual orientation is partly about sex. Duh. When you come out, you are making a statement about your sexual orientation. I don't even think people consciously think about who someone, gay or straight, is sleeping with, but people make evaluations and their own translations about what people tell them on many levels. Unfortunately, what people do with that information is out of your hands. Saying "I don't care what people do in their own bedrooms" is a figure of speech, and has nothing whatsoever to do with literally caring about what goes on in someone's bedroom, nor does it say anything about strictly being about the sexual aspect of a relationship. It means you respect their privacy, their decision and their right to be who they are, or it can mean you couldn't care less. Either way is fine with me.

It's hard to believe that otherwise intelligent people can carry around the ideas about homosexuality that his father does/did. He may begin to feel differently now that he knows his own child is gay. Some people are born straight; some are born gay, that's it, and it has been this way since the dawn of humanity, so it is a natural human condition, IMO.

It's completely ridiculous that Nasrudin Hasan, leader of Malaysia's conservative Pan Malaysian Islamic Party, wants to ban Adam Lambert from performing in the country Thursday because he's promoting "gay culture" by leading shows that are "outrageous, with lewd dancing and a gay performance that includes kissing male dancers, this is not good for people in our country." Oh, wait, you saw the photo? Oh, wait, you've seen him on tour? Maybe this Hasan character has a point! But c'mon, Hasan, it's not like Lambert is screwing every dude in sight.

Yeah, that's exactly what I've been trying to get across.

Adam Lambert Makes 'Minor Adjustments' After Malaysia Protest said...

The Pan Malaysian Islamic Party, currently on the warpath against gay singer Adam Lambert, makes Carl Paladino seem quaint.

PAS, which has about one million constituents, launched a protest against an upcoming Lambert concert in Malaysia because of the singer's same-sex ways.

Said PAS youth leader Nasrudin Hasan: "Adam Lambert's shows are outrageous, with lewd dancing and a gay performance that includes kissing male dancers, this is not good for people in our country."

In light of the outrage, Lambert now says he will make "minor adjustments" to his performance. "While I don't believe that my Glamnation tour is in any way offensive, I have agreed to make a few minor adjustments out of respect for the Malaysian government," wrote the singer.

Lambert later elaborated, telling reporters that he's making the changes out of respect. "[My] main goal is to keep people entertained — not to make them uncomfortable," he explained. "It’s something I’m doing out of respect. It’s just one little thing. Man kissing another man is something that government really doesn’t appreciate."

Celebrity Couples We Still Believe In

With the news that Courteney Cox and David Arquette have decided to split surprised us, not only because we didn’t see it coming, but also because it elicited in us an emotional response we rarely exhibit toward celebrities: genuine sadness. We like Courteney Cox and David Arquette. And we liked them as a couple: the pretty girl who is unafraid to make an ass of herself for laughs, and the dorky guy from the weird-but-famous family who is never killed in horror movies because he's too un-cute. They were supposed to make it! We got to thinking: This wasn't the only recent breakup that rocked us to the core. What about Susan Sarandon and Tim Robbins? Jim Carrey and Jenny McCarthy? Kate Winslet and Sam Mendes? In a sea of shallow people who get engaged at the drop of a hat, these were people we thought had considered their relationships before entering into them. People who were smart and normal (or at least similarly crazy) enough to go the distance. We've lost a lot of such couples this year. So who's left?

Anonymous said...

That's a cute pic of M&P too. Tom and Rita make a great going long-distance couple too.

From what I have read "Mad Max" has been postponed for one year to 2012, perhaps cancelled due to financing problems.

It Took Gay Kids Killing Themselves For Perez Hilton To Realize He's a Disgusting Gay Bully said...

He's going to do things differently from now on, obnoxious Internet personality P.H. tells Ellen DeGeneres on her show today. He's not going to be an utter dick to people from here on out, even celebrities! He'll no longer rationalize his torment of public figures by saying he was just playing a character. Oh, and he's not going to out people. (That's great news for Lance Bass and Neil Patrick Harris, who were thrown out of the closet, in part, by his website.) It only took some high school and college kids ending their lives for this guy to consider he's doing harm.

These are the words not just of a bully, but of a bullying victim: P.H., a homo who says he doesn't want his own community be "ashamed" and "embarrassed" about him, is one of the most tormented online figures out there. It's always just been hard to feel bad for a guy who makes others feel like shit.

So, I guess, good luck out there, P.H. I still can't bring myself to write out your name. Even your pseudonym.

Atticus said...

Are you talking to me?

Perez Hilton said...

...
Out: Were you bullied as a kid?
Perez Hilton: Of course I was bullied as a kid. And a lot of people ask if I began my website as a way to get revenge on those who bullied me but I don’t think I was bullied any more than most kids are in middle school and high school. I was bullied just as much for being very overweight as I was for being gay and in the closet. But being bullied allowed me to find my core group of friends. Being bullied allowed me to seek out and surround myself with like-minded people. I joined the drama club. I joined the forensics team. Those were places where all the other closeted gays were hiding at the time. They didn’t bully me and they didn’t make me feel bad. So it wasn’t all negative and it wasn’t unbearable to the point where I was contemplating suicide. Although I have been that low in my life and I have suffered that kind of depression before.
...
Q: Well, you have an incredible platform. I think that when you spoke about gay marriage at and after the Miss Universe pageant you really brought that issue to the forefront and gave it a kind of attention in the mainstream it didn’t have before. Do you think of yourself as an activist?
A: I think of myself as someone who shines a light. I like to think of it in that way. I shine the light on celebrities behaving badly and I shine the light on those who get it right. I shine the light on causes and issues that are important to me. If that makes me an activist, then yes. But I think it’s foolish to try and be a spokesperson because that will only set you up for failure. I’m not saying I’m perfect. Yes, I won’t out celebrities anymore but if there’s another situation like the Dustin Lance Black nude photos -- I will for sure report that. It’s a different thing.
...
Q: So you don’t regret that at all.
A: Not at all. I got so much flak from the gay community for that and I found that very hypocritical. I’m not perfect and I might make mistakes and I’ll probably say or do things that will upset gay people in the future. And that’s OK, because I’m making a concerted effort to do things differently and be sincere about it and just be mindful of what I do and how I do it.

Q: Talk to me a little more about outing.
A: Lance Bass -- I reported about his relationship with Reichen [Lehmkuhl] and was one of the first people to talk about that before he came out -- he could have committed suicide and left a suicide note and blamed me for that. Thankfully, that didn’t happen. But I will continue to justify my actions. So many people from the gay community were telling me, “That’s wrong! That’s wrong! That’s wrong!” and I don’t want to say that’s wrong or right -- it’s just what I’m not going to do anymore. And don’t forget -- Out put Anderson Cooper and Jodie Foster on their cover.

Q: We definitely did. And I think a huge part of the problem regarding queer kids not having role models has to do with celebrities refusing to come out.
A: I agree. I wholeheartedly agree. And like I said -- I’m still going to be sassy. Like, if I know someone is gay and in the closet I might just repeatedly say that person has a very pretty face [laughs]. I’m still going to be me. To me, that’s still being playful and sassy. But I’m not forcing anyone to come out. I’m not outing anyone. And I don’t even know that that’s what I’m going to do. I’m not putting myself in a box or saying "This is what I’ll do or won’t do." It’s all going to be case by case, post by post situation. I’m just trying to be more thoughtful.

Naked Director Photoshopped Out of Love and Other Drugs Poster said...

Look closely at the poster for the Jake Gyllenhaal and Anne Hathaway Viagra-and-Parkinson's comedy Love and Other Drugs. Apparently, director Edward Zwick was actually naked and in the shot with his stars, but got Photoshopped out. At least that's what we heard at Zwick and Gyllenhaal’s recent New Yorker Festival Q&A with Anthony Lane. According to Zwick, Gyllenhaal and Hathaway had been complaining about how often he'd forced them to do nude scenes. "I said, 'What do you want me to do?'" said Zwick. "And they said, 'You take your clothes off.' And I said, 'Fine!'" Said Gyllenhaal: “It’s weird how eager you were, too. He was like, ‘That’s it? No problem!’ And then it was off. It terrified me! Like, all of a sudden, this really intimate relationship became way, way weird.” Then, says Zwick, all three of them snapped a naked photo together. "The art director looked at it and said, 'Get rid of the director,' and he stripped me out and put Annie’s head on Jake’s shoulder, and that’s the movie poster."

Also, we learned a few other fun facts about Gyllenhaal:

• He’s masturbated “four or five times in four or five different movies.” In The Good Girl, he said, "I decided my character was going to masturbate with his left hand. That was my character choice."

Naked Director Photoshopped Out of Love and Other Drugs Poster said...

• His early acting career mostly consisted of sitting in the background while his older sister Maggie sang and danced for dinner guests. “I did everything wrong, according to her. So I was always banished to the corner,” he said. “Les Mis, when she put that on, I was just a poor person sitting in the corner, begging for money, and she sang and danced all the songs. It’s never changed. It’s still like that to this day."

• He filmed Donnie Darko when he was having a hard time in college and didn’t know where he was going in life. (He dropped out.) After it screened at Sundance, he said, “My mother and father and sister came up to me afterwards, crying, sort of realizing that I had been trying to say something to them about how lost I was. Something about talking to that rabbit at the time comforted me.”

• He accidentally offended the entire crew of Brokeback Mountain when he showed off his first “bad acting” attempt to play Jack Twist at age 40. “We did the first take and I was doing all this bad acting, like, limping around and my back was achy and I picked up this saddle and I grunted, and half of the crew was 40. They were like, ‘We’re 40. We’re not 80! We do more work than you do, you wimp actor.” Also, looking back on his performance, he really regrets the mustache, though he thinks it helped his acting. “It was hard to eat with that mustache,” he said. “Ultimately, it’s the pain that brings great performances.”

• His dream list of collaborators: Paul Thomas Anderson, Ryan Gosling, and Michelle Williams, again.

• He said this about Love's love scenes: “There’s this weird sense of being watched. If you’ve ever made out with anybody and you know you’re being watched, you can’t help but watch yourself, and that just takes the sexiness out of the whole thing. But we’re performers, so you can make it work. Occasionally I’ve been into it. I won’t talk about with whom." And then he laughed a lot. But seriously, we need names.

Clint Eastwood on Monday denied rumors that Joaquin Phoenix is being considered to play gay in the upcoming biopic of FBI director J. Edgar Hoover. But Eastwood, who'll direct the film, did confirm that Leonardo DiCaprio will play the lead.

Eastwood, however, suggested the film would not linger much on Hoover's romantic life.

“He was a very complex person. The homosexual aspect is just one of many. I would say that's the least of his problems. But he was also very clever, whether rightfully or wrongfully, he was very clever about keeping himself in a certain position in life, so it is an interesting study,” he said.

“He was an iconic figure,” the legendary actor added.

Milk screenwriter Dustin Lance Black announced last month that he's completed the movie's script and filming is set for early next year.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt's reps have already denied that he's playing the Riddler in Christopher Nolan's third Batman movie.

Inception's breakout star, Tom Hardy, has been cast in Christopher Nolan's latest Batman picture. No real surprise there, given that Nolan delights in recasting past actors he's worked with, but still — who do you think he'll play? Deadline is reporting that Hardy is up for the lead role in the next Batman film, and that Nolan was the one to suggest him.

Gavin Rossdale Talks About Gay Fling said...

Gavin Rossdale finally spoke about a long rumored gay fling with the British pop star Marilyn.

According to Access Hollywood, Rossdale talked with Details magazine for the November issue.

“I think at the outset there was a sort of fear—that was right at the beginning of Bush, and I didn’t want it to be part of it,” he said. “It felt like a cheap shot, so I was like, ‘I’m not getting involved.’ I’ve never wanted to appear closed about it. It’s not something I’ve talked about really because it’s always been in the glare of a tabloid world. It’s just one of those things: Move on. When you’re 17, Jesus Christ. I don’t think there’s anything strange about any form of – you’re learning about life. It’s a part of growing up. That’s it. No more, no less.”

Rossdal, who married No Doubt front woman Gwen Stefani in 2002, added, “That was it. You have to know what you like, and I know what I like.”

Neil Patrick Harris to Direct Film said...

Neil Patrick Harris will make his feature directing debut with Aaron and Sarah, a romantic comedy starring Emma Roberts and Josh Hutcherson.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, “Written by Chad Gomez Creasey and Dara Resnik Creasey (TV’s Pushing Daisies), the story follows a geeky guy and a popular girl who become friends as freshmen in high school and see their relationship deepen through the four years, four proms and one funeral before graduation. The spec, originally titled B.F.F., was purchased by Rogue Pictures several years ago before Fox 2000 picked it up out of turnaround.”

Harris has directed projects including an episode of his CBS sitcom, How I Met Your Mother. He will star in the new films Beastly and The Smurfs in 2011. Roberts currently appears in theaters in It’s Kind of a Funny Story. Hutcherson recently starred in The Kids Are All Right.

A surprise guest even to event organizers, Jake Gyllenhaal sat discreetly in the last row of the orchestra accompanied by a petite brunette.

After the performance, Natalie Portman stood diligently next to her raffishly handsome boyfriend of over a year, Benjamin Millepied, the principal dancer-cum-choreographer whose ballet Plainspoken premiered that evening. Mr. Millepied choreographed the dance sequences in Darren Aronofsky's forthcoming Black Swan, starring Ms. Portman, on the set of which the two are rumored to have begun dating.

Grecian in a diaphanous emerald green dress with curls of georgette that looped and coiled around the actress' tiny torso, Ms. Portman politely declined The Observer's interview request: "I'm so sorry, not right now."
