Confessions of a Late Bloomer

Neil Patrick Harris used to be an underage doctor on TV. Now he’s another Hollywood first: an out gay actor who can host award shows, play a womanizer, walk the red carpet with his boyfriend, and then get cast in movies as a straight dad. Neat trick.

Neil Patrick Harris
Coming out is its own kind of theatrical performance: It’s a reveal. For most of show-business history, it’s been more like an exposure — often in the aftermath of a scandal, as with George Michael. But then there was Ellen DeGeneres, whose famous "Yep, I’m Gay" on the cover of Time seemed to presage a new era of openness, an end to the double life. Instead, it hobbled her career until she returned, years later, as a talk-show host. That was twelve years ago, and each year there’s more give in the social fabric, with openly gay newscasters (Rachel Maddow), talk-show hosts (Rosie O’Donnell), singers (Michael Stipe), American Idols (Adam Lambert), comics (Mario Cantone), and actresses (Wanda Sykes, Sara Gilbert, Portia de Rossi, Cynthia Nixon). Even some long-closeted female stars have quietly shifted their status, including Lily Tomlin, Jodie Foster, and, most recently, Kelly McGillis.

Yet there’s one set of performers for whom coming out is still considered a career death sentence: male actors, particularly those who play romantic leads or star in action films. The few who are out — Alan Cumming, Nathan Lane, David Hyde Pierce, Ian McKellan — are seen as niche performers. Rupert Everett, once a contender for the first Gay Bond, has been relegated to the margins of the industry. When Grey’s Anatomy’s T. R. Knight came out, it underlined his lack of chemistry with his female co-stars. Meanwhile, a retinue of major stars hover in limbo, their relationships haunted by the suspicion that it’s all for show, their performances (onscreen or on talk shows) scrutinized for indicators of some hidden self. The assumption is that they have little choice, since the conventional wisdom hasn’t budged: An out male star can never be a leading man. Straight women won’t be able to fantasize about him; straight men won’t be able to relate.

Harris has violated all these expectations. He staged his own revelation beautifully, with a clear and upbeat statement for People magazine in 2006, an interview with Out, and a good-sport appearance on Howard Stern, in which he shot back "whatever you please, man" when asked whether he was a top or a bottom. The idea all along has been to acknowledge the fact of his sexuality, then change the subject to his talent. Still, there was a kind of alchemy involved. Maybe it was Harris’s easy style of masculinity, at once unthreatening and seductive. Maybe the timing was right, coming after he’d proved he was more than a Trivial Pursuit punch line. Or maybe he’d learned, from his own extended personal coming-out process, how to handle the expectations of a wider audience.

Harris is careful never to complain about stardom. He always adds a caveat explaining that he is very lucky, that he is grateful for every opportunity, that he has learned a lot. But if there’s a strain of early fame that feels like heavenly power — when you’re the most super-popular person in the room and everyone wants you to take them to bed — that’s clearly not what Neil Patrick Harris experienced at 16. Mention Doogie Howser, M.D., the diary-keeping prodigy he played on the show, and Harris’s whole body language changes. He grimaces, and an extra diagonal line on his forehead appears like an arrow pointing far away.

Back in those strange L.A. years, Harris says, he was preoccupied almost entirely by work. It was a distraction that allowed him not to think about dating. "There were gay adults in L.A., and that kind of made me panic a bit?" His voice rises uncertainly with the memory. "Made me a little sweaty in my palms — and uncomfortable. That was just kind of the elephant in the room. Or not the elephant in the room, but the ringing in my ears: that that was some sort of horrible inevitability. And I tried many different angles to head in a different direction. Dating different girls, being the funny, witty guy at the party, to avoid being the sexual being. I wasn’t thought of in a sexual way, which is easy when you have big ears and the neck and are called Doogie all the time. So I just never really contemplated physicalizing any kind of sexual ideas until much, much later."

Rob: Oooh, wow, that's funny. I've been actively avoiding the Internet and the blogs because I found out very early on that there is a huge vocal fan base for the show and so I knew that this is something that these people cared about tremendously and if I mess anything up, I would probably hear about it in ways that would make me feel horrible. So I've just steered clear of it and tried to give it my best. But I'm actually glad to hear it. I mean, “ladies man” I can handle.

Because Jake is nice and didn't want to embarrass the boy.

^^Maybe, but it'd be more understandable to me if it was a little boy, but he's actually a grown man with 19.

As I said earlier last week, this weekend made 2 weeks since Reeke was seen together, so it was time for a public appearance. They always keep to the same schedule. If Jake has Atticus with him, to me it means that he intends to stay put for the 2-3 months it takes to film the movie. I notice that when he flew himself down to Philly during the summer to follow Reese around and be the babysitter and dinner escort, he didn't take Atticus with him. I would think that if Reeke and the kids are such a "close" and "wonderful" family together, Jake would have brought Atticus with him then also since he spent most of the summer being the good wife waiting for Reese to come home at the end of the day.

Also: Johnny Depp is well aware the second two movies sucked. That didn't stop him from signing on for a fourth film, of course, but based on his comments last week it seems that his faith in Dick Cook was a lot of what was keeping him on board.

What this seems to mean for moviegoers is that there will be a lot of behind-the-scenes negotiations to keep Depp happy for Pirates of the Caribbean: On Strange Tides, but there probably isn't any amount of money that will convince him to stick around after that. Sounds similar to what Tobey Maguire is planning for Spider-Man 4, and probably the only appropriate thing for a guy as busy as Depp to do. But if they decide to replace Jack Sparrow for the fifth and sixth film, I predict they'd have something resembling a fan mutiny on their hands.

Hollywood stars Jake and Toby to light up film's Irish premiere said...

Good news girls -- we may be welcoming Hollywood hunks Jake Gyllenhaal and Toby Maguire here shortly.

The Diary can reveal that plans are afoot to stage an Irish premiere of Jim Sheridan's new blockbuster movie Brothers in a bid to light up the Dublin scene this winter. Oscar-winning director Jim explained how the release date had now been set for his long-awaited movie, which he described as a "love story", and he hopes to be rolling out the red carpet in Ireland.

"Its official release date is December so we're going to have a proper premiere in New York for that, but what I really want is to have a premiere in Ireland as well, probably in late November. "We filmed the movie in New Mexico and it stars Jake Gyllenhaal and Toby Maguire," he said. He added how a glitzy premiere with some of the movie world's biggest names was the "perfect tonic" to all the doom and gloom that has prevailed in Ireland over the recent months.

Although the Irish movie industry has been badly affected as a result of the downturn, ambitious Jim -- who won an Oscar for My Left Foot -- has never been so busy. "The movie's coming out on December 4 and they want to go for a wide release with it. I'm also working on a psychological thriller and I'm trying to do a few other things," he added.

The Dublin movie mogul was out turning on the smiles for the cameras this week after lending his name to the Yes campaign for this Friday's forthcoming referendum on the Lisbon Treaty. After getting political to join the campaign spearheaded by the Screen Producers Ireland, Jim explained his reasons for getting behind the Yes faction. "I think we're nuts to vote No, I think Yes is the only vote that's feasible. Do we really want to be on the edge of Europe or something and have to convert to sterling?

"I'd have to go over to England and change money all the time over there and I wouldn't like that," he laughed.

And he also lashed out at the way the country had been governed for the past number of years, launching a broadside at Ireland's financial institutions. "We've been leaving politics to the politicians for the past 10 years -- with disastrous results. We've also left it in the hands of the bankers and look what they did. "I suppose all the bankers all the way around the world have been caught with their trousers down but in Ireland, they were especially bad. It seems crazy to me," he continued.

New Gay Foreign Minister and Partner are Germany's 'Power Couple'

The German daily Bild is feting the likely new foreign minister, Guido Westerwelle (left), and his partner Michael Mronz, as the nation's new "power couple" following Angela Merkel's election win.

The AP reports: "The ringing endorsement for the 47-year-old Westerwelle, who is widely expected to be tapped for the high-profile post of foreign minister in Chancellor Angela Merkel's new government, in the Bild daily also highlighted his personal life in a way he rarely has. 'His man makes him so strong,' Bild wrote about Westerwelle, declaring that his 42-year-old partner Michael Mronz was not only his most important adviser during the campaign, but also 'gives him security and ... supports him when he suffers a setback.' Despite eight years as leader of the pro-business Free Democrats, Westerwelle's homosexuality has generated relatively little discussion. But with his party set to become kingmaker to Chancellor Merkel's conservatives and him foreign minister, it has been thrust into the spotlight."

Said Westerwelle to German gay magazine Siegessaeule: "I can only tell all young gays and lesbians to not be disheartened, if not everything goes their way. This society is changing for the good in the direction of tolerance and respect ... though slower than I would wish."

A Producer Once Told John Barrowman Not to Come Out. Guess If He Took That Advice said...

Like it's any surprise Torchwood's John Barrowman, who is unreasonably attractive, was initially told by his handlers not to come out? Of course not. It his auto-bio I Am What I Am, Barrowman says a gay producer made a strong suggestion that he keeps things in the closet, to which he replied: "I really hope you’re not saying this, because I’m not going in the closet for you or anyone. You’ve hired me to be a professional, not to have sex. Being a gay man has nothing to do with my abilities on this show."

Apparently not: Barrowman just beat out hetero Alexander Skarsgard (vampire hottie Eric from True Blood) in a meaningless Captain America casting poll! Meanwhile, don't all gay producers tell gay talent not to come out?

"Jake isn't dumb"

No, he's pathetic, not dumb. Family and career issues have reduced him to the pitiable state in which he now finds himself.

And the people who come to visit him on set probably does matter to him. For Jake, this bearding disaster has as much to do with the professional advantages of appearing straight as it has to do with reliable, everyday companionship. Let's face it : Jake is a closeted, ambitious gay man (lots of secrets to keep), transient (where is *his* home?) and separated from his family and Chris (past or present best friend?). That is a prescription for isolation. Those visits on the set for someone as lonely as I think Jake is most of the time mean something.

His mother, sister, bro in law and loony godmother have lots of money, but they *never* visit him on set. And remember when Jake drove two hours to see Austin on set? Did Mr. Nichols ever do the same for Jake. No.

Jake visits them, but they never return the favor. If you were him, how would that make you feel? If your emotional life consisted of these kinds of one-sided relationships, you weren't in love, and you were willing to temporarily suppress you libido in order to pursue something that you've always wanted, why not sell your soul to the highest bidder and accept an running buddy-kind of arrangement?

So much for this feels like Jack Twist driving 12 hours each way for a few days with Ennis, who never seriously inconvenienced himself (geographically) to see Jack. Life really does imitate art, doesn't it?

Well, maybe Reese is like Randall. It's not a particularly fulfilling or healthy arrangement, but at least it's reliable. On a day to day basis, it's better than being alone, settling for a series of superficial business relationships on set, intermittent visits to see relatives, strained relations with colleagues/agents/acceptable pals (ie. super-straight looking, media savvy) and your right hand.

Anonymous said...

Those visits on the set for someone as lonely as I think Jake is most of the time mean something.

Jake isn't lonely.

Jake has longtime friends, he's close to his family, he stays in contact with colleagues and has no problem socializing with the crew or PAs.

Jake doesn't need Reese.
It is Reese who needs Jake to be her escort, it is Reese who uses Jake's friends and family for publicity.

How do you know that Austin or Peter or Maggie never visit Jake on set? And even if they don't, what that has to do with anything?

You forget: the beard makes sure everyone knows she's there, while others don't have that need. IMO there's plenty of people who visit Jake - you just don't hear about it. For example, Ted & Lisa, or the other "Ronnie" lady who won a lunch meeting and set visit (Nailed and POP respectively) via charity (ACLU?) auctions. If they hadn't taken their own pics or written about it themselves, you never would have known that they visited Jake on set. It wasn't in the local or national papers or the gossip rags or the TV tabloids and there weren't any pics taken of them with Jake by outsiders or paps. ~ Just like how it is when other people (friends, relatives, professionals) visit Jake.

Just because you don't see or hear the tree fall in the forest doesn't mean it didn't happen. There's more going on in the world than just what YOU witness.

I feel sorry for all J.G. fans who were hoping he'd be a pioneer, the first young, talented, respected up and coming movie actor who won't hide who he is and show that it is ok to have a different orientation than the majority of people. It's not just Jake though, it's many other artists... actors, singers etc. or sportsmen/women who hide as well. They don't fight to have the right to publically be who they are, they are cowards who hide, not only because of fear of negative reactions from family, friends and fans, but for money and image. What does that say about our society? That you can buy people! Does every person have a prize? With their behaviour they show that it is NOT ok being gay/lesbian, that it is shameful, that it will prevent you from making a career or destroy your career. If people continue to stay mum, nothing will change.
I understand why many hope for popular public figures to come out, because they want these talented, admired men and women to be role models. But many (or most) people are too concerned about themselves, about their personal consequenses etc., so that nothing significant will change anytime soon. People who deserve critisizm are first and foremost ignorant people who hate everything that is different (very dangerous), then people who are cowards and hide who they really are and then people who support those cowards.

Don't expect J.G. to be a pioneer, a role model. You will all be bitterly disappointed. It needs truly brave, selfless personalities to be that. But there aren't many of them.

Kudos to the few famous people who came out and kudos to, presumably, straight actors who showed in movies (which is a medium that reaches masses) that gay love is not different than straight love, like River, Heath, Sean etc... I hope many others will continue to do so, because, believe it or not, it has an effect.

I wouldn't put too much emphasis on who has or has not visited Jake on set. After all, not many people can entertain while at work. The key thing is that wherever Reese goes, she makes sure it is all about her and no one else. She did not visit him, she invaded him.

2:37, I gave the two fan set visits as an example of non-industry people visiting Jake and it's not publicized. Even if/when family or fellow actors visit Jake on set my bet is 99 to 1, that unless paps are present and/or the stars want it known (like Reese), it goes unnoticed in the public sector. The crew is not allowed to reveal details about the project or the actors, and as a rule more filming is done on closed studio sets than in public areas. Just because you don't see or hear about it doesn't mean it never or rarely happens.

Racy pics of Cleveland Mayor Eric Brewer dressed in drag.

LOL said...

And in the WOW news of the day, East Cleveland mayor Eric Brewer has been caught up in a cross-dressing scandal. Apparently he's running for re-election (taking place tomorrow) and this pics just so happened to leak over the weekend. According to Eurweb:

Someone has released photos of East Cleveland Mayor Eric Brewer with all kinds of x-rated poses, lingerie and some things even the media felt would be too risqué for public consumption.

Brewer's opponent, City Council President Gary Norton, says don't look his way and has already condemned the behavior of those who may be associated with the releasing of these photos at this time.

Yeeeees indeed. Scan-duhl!

Brewer actually looks pretty good!

Peter's "An Education" - one of 20 Must-See Fall Movies

"An Education"
Every year there are a few stars whose work gets heralded as a breakout performance. Peter Sarsgaard saw it happen in 2004 with "Kinsey." Now it's time for his co-star to feel the glare of a spotlight. Her name is Carey Mulligan and once you see her play a sheltered woman bursting at the seams to live life, you won't have any trouble remembering her name. (Opens Oct. 8)

P.S. Carey Mulligan is in Brothers too.

We both have insecurities or flaws, but we were both like, 'How do we get over this? How do we be the sexiest we can be in this movie?' We pushed each other. We challenged each other. We developed a love affair that was based on truth rather than niceties."

I've been following Jake's career since October Sky, which is basically the beginning lol. I remember when TDAT was coming out and his wet cover for EW, I thought it was going to be his breakout movie and he was going to be a big star then. That everyone will have heard of him. But it didn't really happen. I thought the same thing with the different coupling in Brokeback, then Zodiac with the amazing hit-making Fincher, then Rendition with the more grownup serious look. But....nothing. Maybe POP will be it? I kind of doubt it, but the bad taste of the general public can't be underestimated, eh?

October 11 said...

Playwrights and producers have used scathing commentary, heartbreaking drama and sharp satire to score political points about war, torture, presidents, AIDS, race relations and women’s rights with New York theater audiences. Now the Broadway musical “Hair” is expanding the concept of stage activism by taking to the streets and urging audiences to follow. The producers canceled a Sunday matinee so that the cast and crew could attend and perform at a march for gay rights in Washington on Oct. 11.

That unusual — and expensive — decision to skip a popular weekend performance at the beginning of the theater season originated with the show’s star, Gavin Creel.

“I said, ‘My God, we have to go, we have to go,’ ” Mr. Creel recalled when he first heard about the rally late last spring.

A picture of the whole "family" in NY some weeks ago has popped up:

Reeke + Maggie/Peter/Naomi

from this blog

Anonymous said...

So much for people at another site saying that the twitters from that day of Reeke in Brooklyn/DUMBO were all PR generated with fake accounts and false tweets. LOL.

Anonymous said...

12:04 PM,

no one said that. Why are you making up things that can be easily checked?

Anonymous said...

Reeke is still fake no matter if there are 10,000 pics of them with his or her family around.

Isn't it obvious already that family photo-op is a constant instrument of their PR?

Why are some of you so shoked? What is very odd,IMO, is that nobody in general really believed they actually use to hang out together(to make people twit about them) and few day later, VOILA! we have pics to prove it. Where were those pics before? In the photo- developing room?

this bullshit gets dumber by the second...

Anonymous said...

I don't think they arranged this or knew someone took their pic. It was some fan who took the pic and posted it on a blog.

Of course Reeke are fake, what Jake's family has to to with anything?

Anonymous said...

They didn't. I presume Maggie didn't agree to do a photo op so Reese didn't have much choice.

Anonymous said...

P.S. They were at a very busy place so they did expect pictures.

They expected twitter, IDK if they wanted pics. But i guess after the skepticism of the sightings, BOOM! a pic shows up! Neat..!

YES! I want to be a Volunteer Movie Extra!

Volunteer to spend a full day (12-14 hours on Tuesday, October 13 at Mellon Arena) as an extra in the film, “Love and Other Drugs.” Proceeds for recruiting volunteers will benefit the Greater Pittsburgh Arts Council! You will help us earn a donation of $1,250 or more from the movie producers if we recruit at least 25 people! Sign up below by October 7th.

The film is directed by Ed Zwick (“Defiance,” “Legends of the Fall,” “Blood Diamond,” “Glory”) and stars Jake Gyllenhaal, Anne Hathaway, Oliver Platt, Hank Azaria and Jill Clayburgh. This R rated film is set in 1997 during the boom of Pfizer and the birth of Viagra. On Oct 13th, the shoot is a Pfizer event and rally which requires over 400 extras to portray Pfizer employees.

Volunteers will provide their own “costumes.” We will send more information regarding what you need to wear (colors, types of clothes), suggestions for hair/makeup, info about parking, etc. about one week before the shoot. Two days before the shoot, we will send the official start time for the day (expect it to be between 5 and 6 am). The movie producers will provide breakfast, lunch, and snacks and will also pay for parking.

It is funny that it took some time to get the picture of Reeke. Like they were saving it for a rainy day, lest we forget them. I'm sure they were disappointed that there were not millions of photos taken while they went to all those busy places. They're hoping twitters and fan cameras will replace some of the arranged pap shoots so they look less like the fame whores we know they are. Plus Maggie probably put her foot down to an arranged photo opp.

Stop stirring 12:04. Just because one or two people don't buy every single twitter that crosses their computer or wants photos doesn't mean that everyone on OMG feels that way.

I guess you couldn't get something going over there this morning so you've decided to come over here and try to make trouble. If you can't get the posters at a site to turn against each other, maybe you can get WFT and OMG to turn against each other, right?

Don't know if you're a troll or pr, but you're sure getting nervous about the continued existence of these two sites.

Anonymous said...

2:02 it probably "took some time" for the blogger to do the pic because they were busy. Plus let's face it: Reeke ain't exciting and Jake isn't anything to crow about anymore.

The blogger has been around for more than a year. I doubt they set it all up (the blog) and faked pics and stories for over a year just so Reeke can have a measly pic in Sept 2009. Some of these conspiracy theories are ridiculous.

Anonymous said...

BULLSHIT 2:06. You know yourself the prevailing theory at OMG at the time of the DUMBO outing was that the twitters were all faked with fake accounts and people crying that there were no pics so that proved it was all PR fake. I am FINISHED with that site. Too much BS and fantasy.

Little Blue Pill/Popcorn/All the names you used on OMG the Sunday we got all those sightings of Reeke in Brooklyn, you either had a meltdown or are trying to distract us from the fact that Jake spent a few days in Pittsburgh when no one else from LAOD was seen there, so he could have an excuse for not showing up at the Disney Expo, and then he skipped off to Brooklyn to get in some Reeking.

No time for real work--or more accutately, no one wanted him there because they know PoP is a dog--but always time to spend with the beard.

Unfortunately for you Tom is the only one who took the bait and bailed. OMG and WFT are still going to be around next May when people start surfing the internet, once they stop laughing at the Princess.

OT: I WAS going to see Dr Parnassus because of Heath (and the others who shared his role) but after reading in Ted's column that Terry Gilliam is one of the directors who signed a petition to free Polanski, I doubt I will now. The girl was 13 years old and it's considered statutory rape even if it's consensual. I was kind of willing to give Polanski some slack until I read the transcript on X17. The reason why I could give him slack was if it was consensual, you know? But it clearly wasn't. What gets me is it wasn't vaginal either. He raped her in the anus. He drugged her with a Quaalude and butt fucked her, dry, raping her in her anus. A 13 year old, a child. That monster deserves much more than jail time. And to see Terry Gilliam and the others stand by him? No way will I go to any of his or the other director's movies again.
