The Last Frontier

Gus Van Sant's "Milk" isn't just a mainstream-minded Oscar candidate; it's also a rallying cry.

With Sean Penn starring as Harvey Milk, the openly gay San Francisco supervisor who was gunned down along with Mayor George Moscone in 1978, the movie (which opens Wednesday) makes its message clear: Gay people must be "out" to be counted.

This theme is particularly timely given California's passage of anti-gay-marriage Proposition 8 this month, but there's also a certain irony:

Here's a broadly targeted movie with marquee actors (James Franco, Josh Brolin and Emile Hirsch co-star), yet not only is none of the featured players openly gay, but there isn't one openly gay leading man in all of Hollywood. Even as gay people have become far more prominent and comfortable in culture and everyday life in the 30 years since Milk's death, not a single current A-list movie actor is "out."

Could it be that big movie stars simply don't swing that way? That lead actors defy all percentages and likelihood to remain a strictly heterosexual crowd?

Or is the more logical explanation that while Hollywood preaches openness, it is fearful to practice it?

"It's the last frontier, and it will remain the last frontier for quite some time," said Bruce Bibby, who as Ted Casablanca writes the popular gossip column "The Awful Truth" for E! Online. "Some of our biggest moneymakers right now are absolute boy-on-boy kind of boys. It's America's dirty little secret. If they only knew."

We won't play the who-is-and-who-isn't game here.

But it's worth noting that at a time when everyone seems to know everything about everyone, and careers move on in spite of arrests, sex tapes, addiction-rehab cycles, affairs and babies out of wedlock, public acknowledgment of homosexuality remains a formidable taboo among top movie talent.

The most cited reason is money.

Van Sant, who is openly gay, laughingly called this an issue of "merchandising," noting that over the last decade leading men have become "industries within themselves. They're almost like industrial conglomerates."

"Hollywood does not like anything that's going to threaten its bottom line," said Michael Jensen, editor of afterelton.com, a Web site devoted to gay and bisexual men in entertainment. "The idea of a gay leading man in a movie that's going to have a budget around $100 million—getting a studio to be the first one to take that chance is a challenging thing to do."

As for the actors, Jensen continued, "there are already so many reasons for a casting director to turn a person down, and being an openly gay actor trying to get a romantic lead role, you're just giving them another reason."

The absence of gay lead actors—and, yes, we are talking primarily of men—stands in stark contrast to the progress activists say has been made in other areas.

"The images in the media 30 years ago and the images today are vastly, vastly different," said Neil Giuliano, president of the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD). "You had 'Three's Company,' an over-the-top caricature of a gay man, and the other characters ridiculed him. Today a show like that would not be aired. We have 'Brothers & Sisters,' we have 'Desperate Housewives,' 'Ugly Betty.' Those are real portrayals."

A gay character on a TV show is no longer news, though GLAAD has tabulated that just 16 of 663 prime-time characters, or 2.6 percent, are gay. Openly gay celebrities in themselves also are no longer such an anomaly.

Singers Clay Aiken and Lance Bass have come out, as did comedian Wanda Sykes just last week. Elton John remains a huge concert draw and classic-rock fixture, and Ellen DeGeneres is welcomed into millions of American homes on her daytime talk show, just as Rosie O'Donnell was on "The View" and her own show.

"People who watch and adore Ellen DeGeneres don't care one iota that she is gay, and they've known she is for a long time," said Mark Urman, distribution president for Summit Entertainment. "That is a very mainstream audience."

Then again, DeGeneres and O'Donnell have done little acting since they opened up about their sexuality. People accept them for themselves, but it's unclear whether they'd accept them as anyone else.

This leads to a dynamic in which heterosexual actors such as Penn or Tom Hanks (in "Philadelphia") have no problems being believed as gay men—or murderers or mentally challenged characters—yet there's much doubt that an openly gay actor could be convincing carrying a romance with the opposite sex.

“I don’t know why that is,” Urman said. “We know for a fact they’re acting.”

There also may be different standards for women and men. Although Jodie Foster does not discuss her personal life, while accepting an award late last year she thanked "my beautiful Cydney" in reference to the woman widely acknowledged to be her partner. Cynthia Nixon's revelation that she is a lesbian had no effect on her participation in this year's smash "Sex and the City" movie, and if anything, Lindsay Lohan has received more sympathetic press since she began dating DJ Samantha Ronson (and stopped acting so erratically).

Back on the male side, Ian McKellen is probably the most prominent "out" movie actor, having co-starred in the lucrative "Lord of the Rings" and "X-Men" franchises. But at 69, McKellen is well beyond the typical leading-man age, and he's British, which comes with a different set of cultural associations. The dashing Rupert Everett also is British, and his career never took off after he opened up about his sexuality, though making the Madonna bomb “The Next Best Thing” didn’t help.

The greatest male success story may be TV's Neil Patrick Harris, who is openly gay yet plays an enjoyably obnoxious straight man on "How I Met Your Mother." T.R. Knight also continues to fare well on "Grey's Anatomy" despite having essentially been outed by reports of former co-star Isaiah Washington's directing an anti-gay slur at him on set.

But neither star is being asked to sell millions of multiplex tickets. Nor are those actors who have come out well after the peaks of their careers, such as Richard Chamberlain. Rock Hudson acknowledged his homosexuality only after he was terminally ill with AIDS in 1985.

Bibby has written a number of much-speculated-about blind items about a closeted actor dubbed Toothy Tile, who he reported was close to going public with his sexuality until his agents and publicists persuaded him not to—a situation far from unique.

"Toothy Tile is a big star, but Toothy Tile wants to remain a big star, and that's the problem," said Bibby, who is gay himself. "Hollywood is a very creative community, and the creative arts have always been totally homo filled. But it's first and foremost a business. We've got to sell the product out to the masses in the rest of the country where it's not so gay filled."

The question is whether the industry's and actors' fears are justified or whether a megastar's coming out might not be such a big deal after all.

Giuliano hopes his own experience could serve as an example. He'd been the mayor of Tempe, Ariz., for two years when he came out, and he was re-elected four times to serve eight more years.

"I had a very misplaced understanding and a very misplaced fear of what life would be like if I was more authentic and more honest and more out," the GLAAD leader said.

McKellen considered coming out to be positive for his craft, saying in a 2005 interview:

"Acting in my case is no longer about disguise; it's about telling the truth, and my truth is that I'm gay. I'm very happy for people to know that, and then I can get on with telling the truth about the character that I'm playing. That's why I say to other actors: If you really want to be a good actor and a successful one, and you're gay, let everybody know about it."

Urman said that at this point, "I don't think that anything to do with anybody's sexual orientation would or could harm somebody's career."

Bibby isn't so optimistic. "My opinion is it would be painful at first because America has shown it has such a fear of gay people," he said. "It would be very rough going for an actor to find that out, and I don't blame them for not wanting to find that out. They're not politicians. They're performers. They don't want to be held accountable for America's discomfort about homosexuality."

Still, Giuliano, who has seen Van Sant’s film, hopes some Hollywood A-listers follow McKellen's and Milk’s lead.

“The message of ‘Milk’ is as important as it was 30 years ago, which is our visibility matters, and you need to be open,” the GLAAD leader said. “The changes we have seen in our society are because we are more open and the community is more visible than it ever has been.”

  2. Anne Hathaway, Michelle Williams Pass First Oscar-Season Test

Anne Hathaway, Michelle Williams and James Franco, your tickets to Oscar season have been punched. Mickey Rourke, you've been punched, too. In a good way, this time. All actors were front and center as nominations were announced today for the Independent Spirit Awards, the movie-award calendar's first major test.

Brokeback Mountain costars Hathaway and Williams are up for Best Female Lead for dressing down in the art-house hit Rachel Getting Married and the upcoming Wendy and Lucy, respectively.

Franco is a Supporting Male contender for playing Harvey Milk's longtime boyfriend in the biopic Milk. Sean Penn, who plays Milk's titular pioneering politician, scored a Best Male Lead nod, as did Rourke, the former rising star and former pugilist, for his career-resurrecting turn as a career-sputtering grappler in The Wrestler, opening Dec. 19.

Other brand-name nominees include Javier Bardem (Best Male Lead) and Penélope Cruz (Best Supporting Female), for playing two-thirds of Woody Allen's Vicky Cristina Barcelona threesome; Debra Winger, for playing Hathaway's mother in Rachel Getting Married; and Rosie Perez, for her turn in the crime drama The Take.

Notable snubs include Milk, which earned four overall nods, but none for Best Feature and Best Director (for Gus Van Sant); Darren Aronofsky, who helmed top contender The Wrestler, but didn't score a directing nomination; and Scarlett Johansson, left on the outside looking in at the Vicky Cristina Barcelona lovefest.

The Dark Knight's Heath Ledger and Iron Man's Robert Downey Jr., among others, were not snubbed—they were not eligible. The Indie Spirit Awards honor films that cost less than $20 million, roughly the light-artillery rounds budget on Hollywood's top action movies.

The Best Feature race shapes up like this: the better-known Rachel Getting Married, Wendy and Lucy and The Wrestler versus the lesser-known Ballast and Frozen River. Rachel Getting Married, Ballast and Frozen River led the nominations, with six each.

Winners are to be announced Feb. 21, the day before the 81st Annual Academy Awards. Here's the complete list of nominees for the 2008 Spirit Awards:

AS if President Bush doesn't have enough gaffes to atone for, he had to send out an apology to Jewish leaders this week. As The Post first reported, prominent Jews were aghast when invites they received to the official White House Hanukkah reception had a Christmas tree and Christmas wreaths on it. It prompted Brooklyn Jewish community leader Isaac Abraham to crack, "It's obvious . . . the Christmas tree is being taken out of the White House and the menorah is being brought in the back." New invites went out yesterday with a menorah on them and a note saying, "Please accept our apologies as the invitation you previously received had the incorrect artwork on it."

    ROURKE'S HERO

IF Mickey Rourke ends up winning an Oscar for his turn in Darren Aronofsky's upcoming drama "The Wrestler," Aronofsky should be the first person he thanks. "Every investor and financier turned down this film because of Mickey Rourke, but I wouldn't do the film without him," the director told guests including Aaron Sorkin, Jane Krakowski and designer Alvin Valley at a Soho House screening hosted by Alec Baldwin and The Week. Baldwin chimed in: "Some actors take drugs, drink, and act crazy to light a fire within them; others take drugs, drink, and act oddly to put out the fire in them. Mickey is one of those actors."

  7. Dear Ted:
While I have no arguments over who can play what role artistically, I have a big problem as a gay man with Hollywood refusing to cast openly gay men in films such as Milk for leading roles. Harvey Milk was all about visibility in real life. Therefore, once my company begins filming, gay men will be playing gay roles. This was where Prop 8 failed. We counted on other people to "represent" us instead of ourselves. So simple, yet nobody, gay or straight, in Hollywood, wants to get it. By the way, you "represent" like hell, baby!
    —Jeff, Panther Studios, LLC

    Dear Man to Man:
But what openly gay leading men are out there and available to be cast? It's slim pickings if you're trying to make a big-budget flick. I actually have no problem with Sean Penn playing Milk, he did a bang-up job I think Milk himself would have loved. It's the rest of the cast that should have been filled to the brim with out, or at least quasi-out, men and women. Neil Patrick Harris would have been great, for starters.

  9. Mary Beth Maxwell, Labor Secretary?

The Wall Street Journal reports on Obama's possible pick for Labor Secretary, Mary Beth Maxwell:

For the rainbow cabinet of the nation's first African American president, Mary Beth Maxwell is the perfect labor secretary you've probably never heard of: a gay woman, community organizer and labor leader with an adopted African American son. And this founding executive director of American Rights at Work is about to get the full-court press.

Maxwell already had the strong backing of former Rep. David Bonior, who despite repeated attempts to get his name removed from consideration continues to be on the short list of potential labor secretaries. Bonior, 63 years old, says it is time for his generation to turn over power to a new generation, and Maxwell, whose labor-backed organization pushes for expanded collective bargaining rights, is his pick.

As Marc Ambinder notes, "Maxwell, who'd be the first openly gay cabinet secretary, is being vetted for the job, along with Jennifer Granholm of Michigan and Kathleen Sebelius of Kansas."

His whole role as part of Reeke is to be a pussy-whipped wimp without a backbone of his own. There's nothing admirable or sexy about him at all. He's fallen off or way down on every list of hot, sexy bachelors and the paps don't even seem to care about him anymore unless he's with Reese. I'm embarassed for him at this point.

    ReplyDelete
  29. We can rest assured that once Jake is back in LA he will go back to his pre-filming routine. Go to breakfast in Santa Monica with Reese and have the pap photo op with them walking with their coffee cups-they will either walk straight to the car or go shopping and the leave. The days they don't do breakfast out, they will go jogging together for the pap photo op that day. Then we may also get the mid afternoon coffee/shopping pap photo op or the exercise class/coffee run pap photo op. Then on one weekend night we will have the out to dinner pap photo op. All of this so we can listen to Reese go on about how she dislikes the paps and she won't live her life looking to see if paps are hiding somewhere.

  45. Donny Osmond on gay marriage:

"There are many gay individuals that are members of our church. I know many of them. In fact, some of my best friends are gay. You ask how I react regarding their marriages. Well, I do support our Church leaders who say that we can accept those with gay tendencies in our church as long as they do not act upon their temptations. Everyone has tendencies to succumb to temptation, but we all have the same standard given to us by our Father in Heaven. Whether we may be tempted to be immoral with members of our own sex or of the opposite sex, we are expected to live chaste lives." [Joe. My. God., Donny.com]

I dont like it either. Dumbing a person down to a caricature of a male, a Disney figure that is, as you say, less than human.

I feel it as a personal insult, the same as when Sarah Palin was nominated as VP.

    ReplyDelete
  52. Well, he'd hardly be the first one in HW, and won't be the last. Becoming a character, or bringing one to life, I don't consider dumbing down, nor take it personally. That's acting; for a male actor, the telling of a story whoever that character happens to be - male characters run the gamut of all types of masculinity, there's not just one type, traditional or not traditional. But it does exist, and it shouldn't be thought of as threatening. I don't feel the entire world revolves around me, to take insult at it where none exists. What is going on in his personal life is a different matter, I don't know if one relates to the other. We could think of it as something to embrace, a maybe NCS actor taking on a mainstream role.

Police sources tell TMZ Scott Ruffalo was the victim of a "suspicious shooting" that took place in his own Beverly Hills apartment. We're also told cops are trying to determine if anything criminal went down -- meaning they haven't ruled out an accidental shooting or a suicide attempt."

Watch her rewrite marital history! Watch her bed the most unbeddable bachelors in town! Oh, and if these magazine confessionals where Ms. W says the fact that she's "too trusting" is her greatest flaw isn't enough, now we've got all of America buying this nonsense, as Four Christmases' massive success is proof.

But look, this is a double-edged Pisser for me, really, as I happen to adore Ms. W, and not just because she likes to call me "Mr. Casablanca." So does Bill O'Reilly. Those good manners often reveal steely and dangerous aplomb deep down below, surely as it does with no one better than the Tennessee-raised barracuda herself.

R.W. beams while her myriad representatives take care of the dirty work in town, trust me on this score. I'm almost starting to admire Angelina, by comparison. Dear Ted:
Why is it such a big deal that Angelina Jolie knows her way around press manipulation? Don't they all in Hollywood? Or at least they try. I just think Angie is the best at the game. Jen tries, she's selling "girl next door." Stephen Huvane, write down some pointers. Tom tries, he's selling Suri. Toothy tries, he's selling straight. Hollywood is really quite transparent. Not as many smoke and mirrors as most would like.

According to People Jake gets 4 stars on the best boyfriend scale because he will do ANYTHING for Reese.

According to Star he has proposed three times!

"Reese Witherspoon really means it when she says she's not ready to marry again. Star has learned that Ryan Phillippe's ex-wife turned down three proposals from her boyfriend, Jake Gyllenhaal. The 27-year-old New Yorker first popped the question — with a diamond ring, even — on March 22, Reese's 32nd birthday. He tried again in July and mid-October when she visited him in London, where he's been filming Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time. The next time, Reese will have to do the asking, says a source. "Jake feels he's found the love of his life, and he can't understand why Reese won't take that step with him."

  144. Richard Chamberlain talks about his kind of girl

    From DL:

He was a HUGE TV star in the early 60s because of Dr. Kildare, bigger than George Clooney during his ER days. I can remember scores of teenage girls wearing Kildare white intern smocks to school in worship of him. His rival for their affection was (the far hotter IMHO) Vince Edwards who played surly and hirsute Ben Casey, the other big TV medic.

When Dick, as he was often unironically called then, was finally done with Kildare he focused on non-commercial theater projects and British films, including most famously playing the tortured gay Tchaikovsky in Ken Russell's The Music Lovers with Glenda Jackson and Julie Christie's lover in Petulia.

While he didn't officially come out until he wrote his autobiography just a few years ago, I don't think he exactly hid his sexuality either, perhaps giving an interview about it on European TV(?). His long time partner Martin Rabbett was often a "coproducer" on many of his theater and TV projects like Shogun and The Thorn Birds.

  146. Gus Van Sant: Happy Milk Came Out AFTER Prop 8

"A new step" in gay cinema is how director Gus Van Sant described his Harvey Milk biopic last night at a Q&A following a screening at the the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Queerty attended, if only to see if Van Sant was as charmingly handsome as he seemed in his Entourage cameo. (Answer: He most certainly is.) Fielding a handful of questions after Milk's credits rolled, Van Sant was lauded by the audience. A 25-year-old blonde New York transplant, who says he is still harassed daily, even in New York, and saw new hope in the film, gave the director a tearful "thank you." An executive from the Hetrick-Martin Institute, home to New York's gay-friendly Harvey Milk High School, attended with some of his students, and commended Van Sant for perfectly capturing Milk's "legacy." And of course, somebody asked the director how he felt the film could have impacted Proposition 8, if only it came out before the election. And that's where he surprised us:

Focus Features and Van Sant could've rushed the film out before California's Proposition 8 vote, the director said, but they didn't even hear about the measure until July, and at that point it wasn't polling well and didn't have much support, so there wasn't reason to think the movie would need to impact the outcome. (He also didn't want to put Milk out before Prop. 8 in case the movie sucked and would've helped pass Prop. 8, he joked.)

But now that the vote is over, Prop. 8 passed, and Milk came out a month later, how does Van Sant feel?

Actually, he said, he's happy about Milk's post-election timing, because seeing the film will make people "wise up" to gay civil rights, which will do more than passing "just one proposition."

Not sure we entirely agree with that sentiment, but that's just poetic license.

  148. 'Milk' Men Speak Out on Prop 8

'Good Will Hunting' director Gus Van Sant's long-in-the-works 'Milk' biopic starring Sean Penn is finally here, and ET's with ensemble cast members Josh Brolin, James Franco, Emile Hirsch and Alison Pill to talk about the first openly gay man to be voted into public office in America -- and how the period film mirrors contemporary political struggles happening now!

"I voted no on 8," says Franco of the California proposition that recently passed making same-sex marriage illegal, "and in our movie Harvey Milk fights a somewhat similar proposition -- Proposition 6, which would have barred gay teachers from teaching in schools. I think we have come a long way in 30 years, but Proposition 8 shows that we're not all the way there yet."

"I think that it's unfortunate that it passed," says Hirsch. "I think it would be kind of weird to make a movie about Harvey Milk and want Proposition 8 to pass. I think the protestors should do what they're doing and I think people are ready for this movie to come out. I think people are fired up for Milk's message to come right now."

With Penn as Milk, who was elected to the San Francisco Board of Supervisors in 1977, the film charts the last eight years of the politician's colorful life after he relocated to the Castro neighborhood and became personally involved with the fight against injustice. Armed with tenacity and a solid group of friends and supporters behind him, the larger-than-life Milk fought for equal rights until he was tragically gunned down along with the Mayor of San Francisco by fellow supervisor Dan White.

Of working with Penn, Franco says, "He's just one of the best actors that's ever lived. He's been doing it for 20-plus years; some people might get complacent, but he's still so dedicated, from everything from the look to how the character sounds. Everything. That's just an inspiration to me."

"He's very intelligent and very mischievous," says Hirsch of Penn, who also directed him in 'Into the Wild.'

Reposting old Towleroad gossip from 2004, so this supposedly happen after TDAT:

    Apr 20, 2006

hey, P-Bitch! I live in LA to and I've heard LOTS of stuff about Jake-y and being gay (but really bisexual, as if theirs a diff).

A guy friend of mine that's str8 does valet parking for xtra $ sometimes, and he SWEARS ON HIS LIFE AND ON HIS MAMMA'S GRAVE that about 2 years ago he saw Jake kissing this older dude when the stopped the car and didn't think anyone had come up yet to get his keys. Hours later when they came out Jake signed an autograph for my friend but said no when he asked if he could take a picture with his cell. My friend kept saying that if he had had his cell out and could have gotten a pic of that man and Jake he wouldn't ever probably have to work again 'cause he would sell it. I told him that was wrong, but he would have done it anyway.

I totally believe my friend cause he doesn't have a problem with gay people and he didn't have a reason to make it up. He' isn't the kind to do that.

wehohag, is this story part of the toothy tiles story? Jake and male in parking lot of mall? just don't see it, but could be true. people keep say gay, but I read he was bi-sexual.

    ----- Posted by: thom | Apr 21, 2006 5:53:04 PM

I don't think it is part of the toothy stuff because the guy who is my friend that saw it saw it back when we were in all high school and that was almost 2 yrs. ago. I've never read all the toothy things but I thought it was all just some gossip colum.

My guy friend would never lie about this. He just isn't the kind to do that. He has a sister that I went to school with at an all girls school and he went to an all boys school wiht my brother. Their at the same college now so I will ask him if it's part of all that toothy stuff, but I don't hink so.

    ----- Posted by: WeHoHag | Apr 21, 2006 8:53:04 PM

What I left out was that my friend was working for a temporary valet service when he saw this. When a restarant's regular valet would call in sick the restarant would call this service my friend worked for and they would send people to replace the sick ones. I will have to ask my friend what restarant it was, but I know it was a restarant and not a mall.

Hollywood and told me that one of the actors in BBM looks familiar after he saw the movie. I was not aware of the rumors then.

    ----- Posted by: thom | Apr 22, 2006 4:43:39 PM

hey, NYCER - - that is NOT what I said. I did NOT say my friend slept with him. I said that two years ago my friend was working as a temp valet and saw him with an older man. They didn't know anyone was watching and they were very close and it looked like they were kissing. They were in line at a restaurant to turn their car over to the valet and there were several cars on in front of them. They didn't expect the valet to come up to them and take their car until they pulled in under the restaurant's garage thingy, so they got caught by surprise.

My friend would NOT lie. He even got Jakes autograph when they came out but said Jake would not let him take a pic. And like I said this was like two years ago.

You need to read the posts before you start accusing people of doing things they haven't. THAT's how shit get started.

  161. James Franco on ‘Milk,’ Heath Ledger’s Death, and Going Back to School
    ...
There’s an easygoing charm about Franco today that contrasts with some of the complex, charismatic men he has portrayed over the years, from James Dean (in a 2001 biopic which propelled his career out of the land of TV fare like Freaks and Geeks) to the impetuous, stringy-haired pot dealer of Pineapple Express, to his solid supporting work in the upcoming Milk, with Sean Penn as Harvey Milk, the first openly gay politician elected in California, and Franco as Scott Smith, Milk’s longtime lover. In person, with a five o’clock shadow giving him longer sideburns and a hint of a mustache, it’s clear that Franco has more on his mind at the moment than looking camera-ready at all times. In addition to his graduate courses at NYU, he’s also simultaneously pursuing an MFA in creative writing at Columbia University. “Going back to school has been life-changing and lifesaving,” he says, taking a banquette seat, placing his knapsack by his side and leaving his black leather jacket on. He leans forward, hovering over a lit votive candle as jazzy music plays in the background. “I wasn’t on the point of suicide,” he says, “but I wasn’t satisfied.”
    ...
“Movies have their own rewards for an actor,” he says, his voice a kind of tough gym-teacher rasp, familiar to those who know him by his villainous Spider-Man character, the vengeful rich boy Harry Osborn. In person, Franco uses the rasp to humorous, gregarious advantage. “You can feel satisfaction for doing a movie that you believe in, or with critical praise, or good box office,” he says. “As an actor, you can tell yourself that your self-worth isn’t measured by how your last movie did at the box office. But I found when acting was all I had, inevitably I would be emotionally affected by how well a movie did.”

“School offered a way to focus on something that had a new criteria for success, and its own rewards,” he continues. “It’s the reward of knowledge and learning things that I’m interested in. What it does is release me from pressure that I put on myself, where everything has to be perfect. Now I go into a project and I turn myself over to the director’s vision. And if a performance doesn’t come out exactly as I wanted because I’m not in complete control, that’s fine. Since I’ve taken this appraoch, I haven’t had a performance that I’ve hated.”
    ...
With his hair lightened and curled for this 1970s-era story, his frame outfitted in jeans and a series of flannel shirts, Franco as Scott Smith, Milk’s long-time lover, brings tenderness to the scenes between Scott and Harvey. He breathes life into what could have been a two-dimensional character, making the performance look effortless. “Whenever Harvey went out and failed at something,” Franco says, “Scott would be there to support him. That was the main function of the character in the film—to provide support.”

On choosing Franco to play Scott Smith, Gus Van Sant says: “We wanted a romantic couple, and James seemed a perfect combination with Sean. I had seen James’ plays, met him a few times. He was also really interested in the part.” As for any similarities between Phoenix and Franco, Van Sant says, “There is a physical resemblance, I think, but they have very different approaches. River was not schooled, but could be great. James has a little more practical study going on.”

Penn and Franco had known each other for years, their friendship beginning when Penn called after witnessing Franco’s breakthrough, Golden Globe-winning performance in the 2001 James Dean biopic. Penn had written a script and had a part he thought would be great for the young star. “It was a world-weary kind of character,” Franco recalls, adding that the film has yet to be made, but it’s still on Penn’s wish list. “After we wrapped Milk,” Franco says, “Sean said to me, ‘We’re definitely doing that other movie, but I’m sorry to say that I’m going to have to break up with you now.’”
    ...
Going from this depiction of internalized homophobia in The Ape to playing Scott Smith in Milk, did Franco receive any new insights about what it might be like to be gay, or in a gay relationship? Franco responds: “As soon as I got out of high school, I was like, I don’t care if anybody’s gay. It doesn’t matter. Doing Milk, I don’t know if it broadened my mind at all. I like to think that I was as open as I could be at that point.”

Franco is continuing to explore themes of conflicting sexual identity in a short film he’s currently directing at NYU, inspired in part by an Anthony Hecht poem about the darker side of locker room horseplay called “The Feast of Stephen.” Poetry is a medium that has fascinated Franco since childhood (his mother, Betsy Franco, is a published poet and children’s book writer). At UCLA, Franco took poetry workshops, and developed a style of writing that he says involves combining fragments of existing texts, like Strunk & White’s The Elements of Style, with his own poetry “for unusual effects,” he says, “and as a kind of response to the previous text.” It’s also the form of expression he turned to after learning about Heath Ledger’s death.

“I was in between classes, waiting in line at a café,” Franco recalls. “Somebody wrote me that Heath had died, and it really upset me. It was weird, because it seemed like a lot of incredible people died in the past year—Sir Anthony Minghella, Sydney Pollack. Brad Renfro died the week before Heath and I’d worked with him twice. It was really adding up. So I wrote something about it, that I actually read at the Hammer Museum in LA… ” he says, his voice trailing off. “Whatever… ” He looks embarrassed for a moment, and then explains: “I’m so shy about talking about it, because in print, it sounds like ‘Oh, James Franco likes poetry!’ ”
    ...
In a convenient tying together of his current preoccupations and pursuits, James Franco will spend his winter holiday starring in Howl, as Allen Ginsberg, the gay beat poet. He’ll also play an alt-rock singer in a movie called Sympathy for Delicious, directed by Mark Ruffalo. After the month-and-a-half long break, his studies will resume uninterrupted, as they have for the past three years. “I have faith that my school and acting schedules will work out,” Franco says. So, what’s at the end of this paper chase? A PhD? “Yes,” says Franco, adding that teaching is something he’d like to do in the future. “It sounds more appealing to teach creative writing students than a general composition class,” he says. “I like the idea of teaching people who I know are interested in a subject, and not because it’s a general education requirement. I want students who want to be there.”

Can Macho, Non-Metro Actors Play Gay?
Sean Penn Follows in Gyllenhaal, Ledger's Footsteps With 'Milk'

He has played a hardened ex-convict, a mentally challenged man and a California stoner. But Sean Penn's current portrayal of a gay politician has some critics calling it his best performance ever. How this tough-guy, straight actor was able to step into the shoes of Harvey Milk, the country's first openly gay politician, in the new film "Milk" is as much a testament to Penn's talent as it is to a culture that has become more accepting of gays.

Yet, while Penn receives raves for his performance, some in the gay community wonder aloud why a gay actor could not have played his role or any one of the others cast with straight actors James Franco, Emile Hirsch and Diego Luna.

"It has almost become a rite of passage for these leading Hollywood actors to take on a gay role," said David Hauslaib, editorial director of the gay and lesbian Web site Queerty.com. "I think Sean Penn's career can only benefit from a role like this. The same was true for Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal [who played gay lovers in 'Brokeback Mountain']." "I think there's probably less fear of being typecast the way that actors in the last century had fears," said New York casting director Tiffany Little Canfield. "It's not as big of a risk. I've never heard in all my casting of an actor being concerned about playing a homosexual character."

A cultural shift that turned "Will and Grace" into a Top 10 sitcom and 2005 gay romance "Brokeback Mountain" into a mainstream success has also made the American audience more open to gay characters. But some charge Hollywood has warmed to gay characters but not to gay actors.

"When straight men get these parts, the gay community feels slighted," Hauslaib said. "A whole number of roles could have gone to openly gay actors to give them visibility. Instead they went to well-known straight actors. It's just another notch in a belt for a straight actor. For a gay actor it could have been a breakout role."

Problem is, even in liberal Hollywood, there remains a dearth of openly gay A-list actors who can open a film. "It was hard to find gay actors who were out," the film's openly gay director Gus Van Sant told Reuters. "There really aren't [many]. You could do it, but they would be unknowns and that would be fine with me, but the money [financiers] would start to get nervous." After a dozen years of trying to get "Milk" made, the film finally received the green light when Penn signed on.

"Of all the colors in the rainbow, green [the color of money] still seems to be the most important," Canfield said. She points out that the number of A-list movie stars who can get a movie produced just by signing on is already small. For gay actors, it's nonexistent. Prominent openly gay actors Sir Ian McKellen and Rupert Everett haven't been able to do it, Canfield said.

"Who are our big movie stars who are openly gay? Is there an A-list?" Canfield said. "No, there is not." Meanwhile, audiences appear to have little trouble accepting tough guy Penn as a gay man on screen -- in his personal life, he has scrapped with paparazzi and carried a rifle through New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina.

"I think he does a remarkable job," said Gregg Kilday, the film editor for The Hollywood Reporter. "He seems to inhabit Milk's milieu, his mannerisms and his spirit." "Sean Penn often plays very intense characters that keep the world at a distance," Kilday said. "As Milk he's alternately playful and warm. At his core there is a toughness to Milk and also a lightness. That's the real surprise, that Penn captures the lightness as well."

Kilday does not believe that Penn approached this role differently than any other. "In this case he's playing a real person. He clearly had a lot of research to draw on, a lot of footage of Harvey Milk, friends like Cleve Jones, who served as advisers," Kilday said. "My sense is both he and Van Sant wanted to make the gay sexuality as matter of fact as they could. So they introduced it right at the beginning of film and treated it as casually as the people would have treated it at the time."

While the door has swung open for straight actors to play gay roles, the reverse -- gay actors in straight roles -- is still rare, at least on the big screen. Cheyenne Jackson, the hunky male star of Broadway shows "Xanadu" and "All Shook Up," has acknowledged that since coming out of the closet, he's unlikely to get leading man roles, though he has gotten a cameo on the NBC drama "Lipstick Jungle" and a small role in the film "United 93." "To be frank, I think I've missed out on big parts because I'm open," he told The Advocate in April. "I've screen-tested on some really big projects, and you can't tell me that behind closed doors big execs aren't like, 'We have Dean Cain or this gay guy who played Elvis on Broadway.' I'm not that naive to think that that doesn't play into it."

But Kilday sees a shift and it's being spearheaded on the small screen. "Older gay actors who wanted mainstream film success -- Rock Hudson being the main example -- kept their sexuality hidden," he said.

"Now you're seeing a younger generation of actors on television and stage, who [are] openly gay. Some are playing gay; some, straight. As they mature, a few over time could become mainstream A-list actors." Those actors include TR Knight on "Grey's Anatomy" and Neil Patrick Harris on "How I Met Your Mother." Both are playing straight roles.

Still, Hauslaib believes American sensibilities are changing faster than Hollywood's. "Until Hollywood decides it will support the career of gay actors, we won't have openly gay actors," he said.

"That's the next step for our culture," Canfield said. "Where is our star who is openly gay?"

    JUST TOO SPOOKY

THE rental listing of the SoHo apartment where Heath Ledger accidentally overdosed has been pulled without a taker willing to cough up $26,000 per month. The Post's Braden Keil reports the three-bedroom loft at 419 Broome St., which was officially relisted in late July after Ledger died there last January, couldn't attract a tenant - most likely because of its spooky provenance and a cooling high-end rental market. A Corcoran Group source would only say the 4,400-square-foot pad is "temporarily off the market."

NOT A GAY MOOD AT SUNDANCE

ORGANIZERS of the Sundance Film Festival insist 2009 is going to be their biggest year yet - an assertion that gay-rights activists will not be pleased to hear. While the star-studded event announced the 118 movies in its lineup yesterday, activists remain up in arms over the festival's involvement with supporters of Proposition 8, the amendment that passed in California, banning same-sex marriage.

The festival is held every year in January in Park City, Utah, the state that's a stronghold of the Mormon Church, whose elders "organized its followers to support the amendment banning same-sex marriage . . . and encouraged them to give generously to the cause," according to The Advocate. Sundance organizers screen many festival films in Cinemark Theaters, owned by Alan Stock, who made a personal donation of $9,900 to support Prop 8.

Political activist and AmericaBlog.com editor John Aravosis, who uncovered Stock's funding of the amendment, told Page Six: "If you go to Utah, you're funding hate."

A Sundance Institute representative said all the movies that screen in Cinemark theaters will also be shown at alternate locations. But Aravosis fumes, "Just moving movies around is not enough. Money from this festival is funneled directly to the Mormon Church and to a supporter of Prop 8. Sundance should simply say they won't screen films in a hate theater."

Openly gay actor Alan Cumming, whose "Dare" is a Sundance selection, is skipping the festival to attend the inauguration of Barack Obama - "someone who I believe will make America a place where gay people will be respected and given true equality," he told Page Six's Neel Shah. (In fact, Obama is on record opposing gay marriage.)

A Sundance Institute rep told us: "Sundance has a long history and in fact was founded on the idea of championing diversity . . . It is our hope that people will embrace the festival for its commitment to diversity, not avoid it."

  181. "Dark Knight:" A Solid Oscar Contender

As the box-office bankroll climbed for "The Dark Knight" last summer, the Hollywood consensus was that a posthumous nomination for Heath Ledger was the Batman blockbuster's best Academy Awards hope. Now that critics have gotten a peek at all the last-minute Oscar contenders, "The Dark Knight" has emerged as a solid contender for best picture and best director for Christopher Nolan.

Web sites such as TheEnvelope.com and Awardsdaily.com rank Nolan and Ledger among key Oscar contenders and list "The Dark Knight" alongside best-picture possibilities such as Ron Howard's "Frost/Nixon," Gus Van Sant's "Milk" and David Fincher's "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button." "Far be it for me to try and predict, and I think that anybody looks like a (jerk) if you really try to predict what people are going to vote for. But certainly, for me, I think that the serious contenders in this movie in my mind are Heath, Chris for director because he's done an extraordinary job, and I do believe best picture, as well," "Dark Knight" star Christian Bale said Wednesday night at a cocktail reception for the filmmakers and critics.

It's unusual for an action flick to climb into the company of Hollywood's year-end prestige pictures, with Oscar voters tending toward highbrow literary works rather than comic-book adaptations. Among the action films that made the best-picture cut at the Oscars were the three "Lord of the Rings" movies and "Raiders of the Lost Ark."

But building on the critical and commercial success of 2005's "Batman Begins," the sequel elevated the superhero genre to a new high, with critics ranking "The Dark Knight" as one of the year's best films. "It is a genre movie, but I think it goes beyond it with the themes in this movie," said "Dark Knight" co-star Aaron Eckhart. "It's an important movie sociologically. I feel like in this day and age, with terrorism and with the cancers of the city and people trying to find a voice within their own city, this is an important film.

"But it's a Batman film, so it has that going for it. It has that going against it."

With about $1 billion in worldwide theatrical grosses, "The Dark Knight" arrives on home video Tuesday, two days before the Golden Globe nominations, where the movie could gain some Oscar momentum if it scores well there.

Ledger, who died in January of an accidental prescription drug overdose, is considered a likely supporting-actor nominee for his diabolical performance as Batman nemesis the Joker. Oscar nominations come out Jan. 22, the one-year anniversary of Ledger's death.

"I'd like to think he would be very quietly proud of the fact that people really responded to it in the way he'd intended, were moved by the performance," Nolan said. "As far as Heath goes, any and every validation of the success of his performance is a great source of pride to me and relief to me that I've done my end of getting his performance out there."

  183. The Dark Knight Returns to Theaters on January 23rd 2009

December 4, 2008 – Warner Bros. Pictures is bringing “The Dark Knight” back for a return engagement in theatres and IMAX on January 23, 2009, giving audiences one more chance to see the film on the big screen. The film will re-open nationwide, it was announced today by Dan Fellman, Warner Bros. Pictures President of Domestic Distribution.

In making the announcement, Fellman stated, “‘The Dark Knight’ is a crowning achievement in every sense of the word. We wanted to provide one more opportunity for moviegoers to experience it on the big screen as it was meant to be seen.”

One of the most celebrated and successful films of this or any year, “The Dark Knight” has been hailed by both critics and audiences since its original release last July. The film garnered widespread acclaim for its artistic and technical achievements, including the work of its outstanding cast and its director, Oscar®-nominated filmmaker Christopher Nolan (“Memento”).

Led by Christian Bale, reprising his role from “Batman Begins,” and Academy Award® nominee Heath Ledger (“Brokeback Mountain”), the ensemble cast also includes Academy Award® winner Michael Caine (“The Cider House Rules”), Gary Oldman (the “Harry Potter” films), Aaron Eckhart (“Thank You for Smoking”), Maggie Gyllenhaal (“Stranger than Fiction”), and Academy Award® winner Morgan Freeman (“Million Dollar Baby”).

  188. OK!'s Strategy: Don't Publish

Why does the public not sufficiently appreciate the hardworking people at OK! magazine? Last month there were rumors that Richard Desmond, the billionaire British publisher of the laughable celebrity mag, actually flew to America to personally investigate why new OK! boss Kent Brownridge was losing money. The magazine's flack denied this, saying they where "doing fine." Shockingly, it appears what that flack said was not entirely true, because OK! has decided to skip four issues at the end of this year:

"Skipping dates suggests it is cheaper to not publish than it is to publish. Publishing sources estimate that its edition in the slow-moving Thanksgiving week had sold only 300,000 copies while a double issue with Michelle Obama sold about 500,000 copies. That suggests that the magazine has been missing its rate- base promise to advertisers of 900,000 copies a week."

We also heard recently that Brownridge has put a $100K cap on the amount of money the magazine can bid for its favorite things: celebrity baby pictures. That's like, what, Kelly Osbourne prices? This does not look good.

That's absolutely true; Brokeback Mountain was one of the best movies I have ever seen, right up there with the best of them all, IMO. And look what happened there. It's just that in Heath's case, a nomination or an award would be a great tribute.
