Out In the Cold

The enduring stigma of homosexuality in Hollywood
By Matthew Hays
December 15, 2005

When Ang Lee’s latest film, Brokeback Mountain, did the festival circuit in the fall, it was greeted with warm critical and audience responses, won the top prize at Venice and was declared a cinematic breakthrough. The film — which opens Dec. 16 — involves two cowboys, played by rising stars Jake Gyllenhaal and Heath Ledger, who meet and fall in love in the 1960s. Despite their passionate romance, one that continues clandestinely over decades, they are never able to live together as a gay couple might do today. The social taboo surrounding homosexuality, the film tells us, is all that stands between them and their honest and innocent pursuit of happiness.

Brokeback Mountain is a testimony to the huge advances gays have made in terms of their representation on the big screen. It is a beautifully shot, studio-backed film featuring two bankable stars, directed by an Oscar-winning director, with a same-sex romance as its central focus. But these changes have not come easily.

In 1981, New York film critic Vito Russo penned the first edition of The Celluloid Closet, a diatribe in which he argued that the powers-that-be in Tinseltown had long supported anti-gay attitudes by infusing American movies with injurious stereotypes about the lives of gays and lesbians. Gays were too often sidekicks and the brunt of bad jokes, Russo argued, chastising closeted Hollywood gays for not pushing the issue further. Most striking was the book’s concluding section, "Necrology," in which Russo tallied a list of movies in which gay and lesbian characters met their untimely ends via suicide, mutilation, skewering or gunfire.

"Hollywood is too busy making old formulas hit the jackpot again to see the future," Russo stated in his final sentences of the book. "Hollywood is yesterday, forever catching up tomorrow with what’s happening today. This will change only when it becomes financially profitable, and reality will never be profitable until society overcomes its fear and hatred of difference and begins to see that we’re all in this together."

Many of Russo’s dreams have been realized since his death in 1990. With a general demystification of homosexuality in Western culture has come a shift in Hollywood casting calls. Now, heterosexual actors are no longer afraid to take on gay roles for fear of being identified as gay themselves. This has brought major star power to gay characters and issues that affect them. In Philadelphia (1994), Tom Hanks played a corporate banker who loses his job when his employers learn he has AIDS. He won an Oscar for his role, seen as doubly courageous given the character’s sexual orientation and illness. In 2003, Charlize Theron won the Oscar courage sweepstakes for her role in Monster, portraying a homely, serial-killing lesbian prostitute. It seems a fait accompli that Philip Seymour Hoffman will get an Oscar nomination for his portrayal of gay scribe Truman Capote. On television, meanwhile, Eric McCormack has won an Emmy for his ongoing role in the long-running sitcom Will & Grace.

These roles, considered breakthroughs in their own way, have something in common: the characters are all played by heterosexual actors. All of these portrayals have been accompanied by media fanfare and publicity. In interviews, the actors were always careful to emphasize that they are heterosexual. Indeed, it could be argued that their ability to muster widespread audience sympathy and empathy seems to be predicated on the fact that they’re only playing gay. Despite this so-called progress, when an actor plays a serial killer, they are never asked about their reluctance to take on the role. When an actor plays gay, the possible-reluctance question is obligatory.

If dramatic gay and lesbian representations have shifted radically in the past two decades, the change for gay actors is starkly unmoved by comparison. Various thespians have come out, but the idea of a leading actor — male or female — being openly gay remains out of the question. A number of British actors have come forward, notably Sir Ian McKellen and Rupert Everett, and Nathan Lane and Harvey Fierstein have given a number of supporting-role performances in Hollywood features. Ellen DeGeneres and Rosie O’Donnell have famously come out, but are now thought of primarily as talk-show hosts.

But little has shifted for the A-list acting club since Rock Hudson succumbed to AIDS 20 years ago. The damage such widespread knowledge could do to an actor was reinforced in 2001, when Tom Cruise sued a French tabloid for $10 million US over a fallacious story about the actor’s affair with a French porn star. Cruise’s lawyer, Bert Fields, pointed out in his legal brief that the mere perception that Cruise might be gay — and he is not, Fields repeated — could seriously damage Cruise’s ability to command multi-million-dollar film roles. In fact, much of the damage, Fields inferred, had already been done. “It’s something that will be there forever,” he said. The tabloid printed a full retraction and an apology.

The issue of closeted actors is something San Francisco-based author and screenwriter Armistead Maupin has dealt with in his own work. The author of the hugely popular newspaper serial-cum-book series Tales of the City, Maupin is a hero within the gay community for championing sexual honesty above all else. In 1995, when filmmakers chose to make a feature-length documentary version of Russo’s book The Celluloid Closet, they hired Maupin to write the narration. When the film was released, however, Maupin distanced himself from the project, slighting the film’s narrator, Lily Tomlin, for not being more forthcoming about her lesbianism. (Tomlin has since come out of the closet.)

"If Vito could see this now," Maupin said at the time, "he’d be very upset. Having a closeted person involved with this project runs counter to everything Vito Russo stood for: openness and honesty, and an end to the celluloid closet he wrote about so passionately."

In speeches and articles, Maupin frequently refers to the massive successes of the gay and lesbian liberation movement, a phrase that now seems almost quaint. But for all the discussion of evolving attitudes, he acknowledges little has changed for a new generation of A-list actors.

"Unfortunately, that closet hasn’t really vanished at all," Maupin told me recently. "It’s simply more sophisticated than it was in the past. Rock Hudson could rely on the fact that the local press wouldn’t run with a story about him being seen with another man. Now, gay superstars are required to get married, have children or adopt them and be very discreet about that trainer who travels with them."

At a time when black actors fought for better roles, the point was often made that Hollywood is about green, not black and white. According to Maupin, the question for gay actors boils down to the same thing: economics.

"It’s about money and the continuing perception that actors will lose money for their agents if they come out. And that may be true, but it won’t change until there’s honesty. I have more admiration than ever for people like Ian McKellan and Rupert Everett, who’ve come forward, been honest and are still pursuing their careers."

That’s two British actors who’ve come out. Where’s the American leading man?

Maupin sighs. "You’re right: there isn’t one."

Jessica Biel Isn't Getting Married, Doesn't Want Kids

Is she a gay man? Terrible blogger Jessica Biel speaks up in Harper's Bazaar and tells them that she doesn't "need" to get married and that kids aren't in the picture right now. She also says she doesn't see herself as "ballsy" or "cool" but she does use the word "groovy." I had so much respect for her until that last sentence.

"The actual idea of signing those papers and doing all this stuff ... I've never been someone who's like, 'I have to, have to, have to have it," she says about marriage. And as for kids?

"I think when you make a decision to have a family and children, everything else comes second," she says. "But if I choose to have a family, I would hope to create a balance, because I don't want to lose my sense of identity, my career, and my independence. Why can't I have both? Why can't I have everything? So many women do it."

Damn, do what every other self-absorbed broad does in H-town and have a kid and hire a nanny the second the kid is cleaned off. Have the kid around for photo opps when necessary and live your life. Why all the chest-thumping. Just do it. You have the money. I should seriously be a life-coach.

Christianity is a major force behind intolerance, and when they brought their religions to the New World and the Middle and Far East, they actively condemned homosexuality and took steps to discourage what was in some cultures accepted and respected. July 11, 2008 8:32 AM

Homosexuality was never accepted or respected in any organized religion.

^^Very true, but few or none had such far-reaching ramifications or the need to convert "savages" to the "superior" religion and culture, white superiority. Once they were Westernized, certain aspects of cultures of course changed.

I guess with the Eurostar pics Jake is clearly not going to make it to NY next Monday for the premiere of TDK...I'm shocked that OK! was incorrect. I thought for sure Jake would make it...cough.

Jake obviously doesn't have a problem with showing his long hair.

"I guess with the Eurostar pics Jake is clearly not going to make it to NY next Monday for the premiere of TDK...I'm shocked that OK! was incorrect. I thought for sure Jake would make it...cough."

Well, it was a very bad fortnight for Reeke, Inc. First, Jake fires his personal assistant. Then Jake's outer homo makes an appearance with the limp-wristed picture. Then, he's caught stumbling along, semi-inebriated. Two days later, Reese moves into a hotel with her rugrats. And the piece de resistance, Jake decides to go to Europe instead of attending the premiere of of his sister's biggest film, even though she's attended many of his premieres.

So, instead of interpreting these past two weeks as a sign that he needs to clean up his act, reconnect with his family, best friend, non-industry friends and the wider world, what does Jake do? He digs an even deeper psychological hole for himself.

Could this guy be more estranged from his family?

Could this guy need more therapy than he's already getting?

Could Reese be a more destructive, co-dependent, isolating force in his life?

And most importantly, is there a lonelier man in Hollywood right now?

Anonymous said...

Reese is annoying bitch in his life.

Oh c'mon now, we don't know if he's lonely or not. Please don't make him a victim in all of this. We don't know anything about his life.
What real problems does he have?
I'm a foreigner in the country I live in and despite being an integrated student I always have to fight for equal rights. Just today I got attacked from a neighbour who said I was talking too loud and he threatened me, but when other neighbours talk too loud it's ok, because they are no foreigners. This pisses me off so much.
Jake otoh lives in his own wealthy country, had a priviledged childhood, his parents are respected and helped him in the business. I envy him so much.

Whether Jake is bearding or not, I think he knows what he's doing.
It doesn't change anything for me, he's still attractive to me and I still like him as an actor.

"THE praise and adulation for the late Heath Ledger has extended beyond the rave reviews for his performance in The Dark Knight to a US bio which threatened to sully his memory.

Despite pledging to explore Ledger's family secrets and the feuding that has followed his death, producers of his E! True Hollywood Story have glossed over the drama in the final edit.

While the dramatised biographies usually dish dirt on celebrities, Ledger's family circle and industry friends closed ranks on a team of filmmakers who flew to his hometown of Perth last month to dig up more secrets.

Instead, the one-hour clippings job, which airs tomorrow night, features limited insights into his life and arms-length interviews with colleagues, including his Sweat co-star, Melissa Thomas and casting agent Ann Fay.

The final chapter of the drawn-out episode sees one of Ledger's last co-stars, Mini-Me actor Verne Troyer, breakdown in tears over his passing.

Troyer reveals details of the cold symptoms Ledger had been battling on the set of The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus just a week before his death by accidental overdose on January 22 this year. "You could tell he was sick. He looked exhausted," Troyer said.

A New York coroner found Ledger had died due to a likely mix of prescription medications treating insomnia, anxiety and pneumonia.

E! producer Dana Drake was quoted as saying they would be "open" to tackling the controversial areas of the actor's life, but avoided airing family in-fighting between his father Kim and his brothers."

Ok was the source of the TDK story. Jake is a grown man, he has out grown those HW friends."

So because you have a new girlfriend, you don't need your close friends anymore? You make no sense. Also, in case you forget, Jake's SISTER with whom he's close, is in TDK (and mind you, he has been there before for previous premieres--just like she was there for him at his premieres--most notably Brokeback Mountain). And Maggie was definitely seriously involved with Peter when she went to the premiere of Brokeback Mountain (he went with her)--so clearly, being involved in a relationship is not an impediment to showing your support for family members.

I really dislike your cavalier tone when it comes to family and close friends. Chris is hardly a HW friend of Jake's--he is his longtime best pal and for however this relationship with Reese will run, Chris (like Maggie) will be there before, during and afterwards.

Also, I know you don't like to be reminded of this but the father of Jake's goddaughter is in The Dark Knight too.

Great career...?? Anybody hunky could play the Prince of Persia. Jake only got that role because Orlando said no and they needed another bland hunk in that same age range for that role. It's hardly a great acting stretch nor will it get Oscar nods. I seriously doubt Jake's work in "Brothers" will get much note--(I think it'll be Tobey who's very good and very underrated). Jake's recent work in "Rendition" and "Zodiac" was very disappointing--and then there's "Nailed." That's a great career? Please...this guy is well on his way to becoming his generation's Ben Affleck. He's a total mediocrity and sellout. I'm shocked at how BAD his movie role choices have become...

I don't think Heath expected to die at 28. I think he expected to have a lot more kids and I'm sure he would have named his best pal Trevor as a godparent to one of them. I really don't understand WHY Jake was named Matilda's godfather except I did read one time where Heath said it had been Michelle's idea so maybe she should be blamed.

I'm pretty sure, since Michelle really liked/likes (?) Jake she was a big influence when Heath chose the Godfather. She, on the other hand, chose her best friend Busy. Now we don't see Jake taking a stroll with Michelle and Matilda, it's Heath's old Aussie friend.

It's Miller Time!

I've talked a lot about Rooster McConaughey and his son, Miller Lyte, but I've never seen a picture of the poor kid. Well, here he is. What in Carrot Bottom hell did they do to Miller Lyte's hair? They totally used leftover Easter egg dye and mashed up carrots to make his hair look like that. They were paying homage to their hero, Ronald McDonald.

Miller Lyte may look like a happy child now, but wait until he grows up and becomes a Bud Light kind of boy. He's going to take the family shotgun off the wall and chase his Rooster all around the trailer park.

This is what pisses me off about Matthew. His brother's nickname is Rooster and his nephew's birth name is Miller Lyte, but he names his son Levi? The McConaughey family should disown his ass for that.

Old news with one new sentence:

Williams Plans Ledger Film

Michelle Williams is reportedly set to make a personal film about her late actor boyfriend Heath Ledger. The actress is said to be keen to keep his memory alive for the sake of their two-year-old daughter Matilda.

A source tells the Australian Daily Telegraph, "It makes Michelle's heart ache that Matilda was so young when Heath died and she's unlikely to retain any memories of her father. "She (Williams) wants to keep his spirit alive with something Matilda can treasure all her life."

The proposed film will feature friends and colleagues sharing their memories of the Brokeback Mountain star.

It's funny to notice how everyone is all over Jake, "he's so sexy with the long hair", "bad ass" etc..
But I remember vividly when Heath Ledger was sporting the long hair and a similar look Jake's sporting now, everyone said how gross he looked and dirty. Now all of a sudden everyone is a Heath Ledger fan, I wonder if he'd have as many "fans" if he was still alive.
I was dreading reading comments about Heath on blogs, because they were mostly so nasty. I just recently read through old JustJared, ONTD and PopSugar posts and almost ever reply was how ugly and gross Heath looked. Look how the replies after his death changed.
I like the long hair on Jake AND Heath and their outfits.

"6:26 PM So Jake is so much better than ugly nasty Heath, happy now?"

That's not what I'm saying. Read some of the old comments about Heath and you'll see what I'm talking about. You will notice how the comments changed after he died.

Anonymous said...

There was a post on Perez Hilton when Heath was still alive and Josh Hartnett was looking very Heath-ish in one set of pics and Perez mentioned it. Most of the people who replied yelled at Perez how he could compare beautiful Josh to nasty Heath. Hell, even Josh Hartnett had more fans. After he died bam, change of tone. That's why I was surprised that besides Brokies others were taking about his death so much, he sure wasn't so loved when he was still alive.

I think a big factor in a Hollywood actor's popularity are his looks. Brad, Johnny, young Leo, Jake, Josh are all obviously pretty men. Johnny, Leo and Jake also have the talents which is a huge plus.
With Heath, he wasn't pretty, but he was sexy, some noticed the sexiness some not, he wasn't flaunting it. I think he would have gotten a bigger fan base after TDK. I think his talent would have made up for his lack of prettyness, like it's with some other stars. It's a shame he isn't alive to witness it anymore.

ITA. And I would describe Reeke, Inc. as a contractual and co-dependent collaboration, not a relationship.

"Jake is giving off a pretentous vibe lately, must be the influence of Reese's company."

Actually, I would call it a dysfunctional vibe, and it started last October. Every time he pulls one of these stunts, essentially running away from his family and long-time friends, he reminds me of a mini-Britney Spears, right before her complete breakdown. I am convinced now, more than ever, that he had some kind of mini-meltdown last October, and he's still healing.

running away from family publicly
running away from non-industry friends (including perhaps even Chris) publicly
running away from the respectable press
running away from heath's death
running away from the gay community

Jake has been running away for months now, but he isn't getting anywhere. He isn't running to Reese; he's running away from himself.

The Reeke-bots over at WDW suggested that Jake might be in France because he has a few days off from PoP.

We've heard this refrain before. He was seen escorting Gen. Witherspoon in DC for some Avon function while his grandmother was dying. Work did not prevent him from attending to his biological family obligations.

If the Reeke-bots are correct, he is not skipping Maggie's premier because of work. He's skipping the premier because he's a scared, closeted little gay boy running away from family responsibilities.
