Gay Power in Numbers

"Whether you love him or hate him, there's no denying that Perez Hilton - aka Mario Armando Lavandeira Jr. - has Hollywood by the balls with his constantly updated, hilarious and often vicious celebrity-gossip blog, PerezHilton.com.

MW: Didn't you tell Howard Stern the blog originally had something to do with Clay Aiken?
Hilton: Well that's the reason I stopped using my [real] name: I started getting death threats from Clay Aiken fans.

MW: Serious death threats?
Hilton: Serious to the point where they started two hate Web sites against me. They put up my home address, my home phone number, [and] a picture of my apartment building. That's pretty hardcore, I would say.

MW: What were you saying about Clay Aiken that set them off?
Hilton: Just that he's gay. He's repeatedly denied it.

MW: Why do you think it's okay to out people?
Hilton: Because I'm not doing anything differently than what you do with your friends. I'm sure when you talk to your friends, and when you talk about Clay Aiken, you talk about his being a big queen.

I view the Web site like I'm talking to my friends. I'm not making anything up. And also, I only like to say someone is definitely gay when I know that they definitely are. I probably was the first person to talk about Wentworth Miller being gay, and that's because he is. He's denied it, but that's okay. His ex-boyfriend, Luke Macfarlane, just came out of the closet.

MW: Why is it so important to you?
Hilton: There's definitely power in numbers. And also the more there are being openly gay, the less of a stigma is attached to being openly gay and the less fear there is around it.

There are so many closeted lesbian and gay actors and celebrities -- and most of them are afraid to come out because they're afraid it's going to hurt their careers. I don't believe that. I don't think it's going to hurt their careers. I know that it's not going to hurt their careers. In the past it may have been a different story, but I can't think of a single case in the last five years where someone has come out of the closet and it's hurt their career. In fact, it helps."

  1. MW: When did you know you were gay?

HILTON: I think when I was 6 years old. I got naked with the boy next door and we rolled around in the dirt. My parents found out and they sent me to a psychologist, trying to cure me. [Laughs.]

MW: When did the blog become big enough for you to quit your day job?

HILTON: Well, thankfully, I got fired from my day job. I was working at one of the shitty shitty shitty celebrity magazines: Star Magazine. That was a job I got after I started the Web site and it was paying really good money. I hated that job. Thankfully it only lasted about five months.

Grace looks the way she's supposed to look - like Will's faithful bearding companion and co-enabler.

I know that his personal life is a mess, and his career hangs in the balance, so I have to feel sorry for the guy. He must be under enormous pressure by his pr handlers to do this. And he's shed virtually all contact with non-indusprobably a pretty lonely place for him.

Thank god that Chris (his real soul-mate, plus extras) is going to help him pull together this restaurant in LA. Chris will provide him with an island of snaity in a storm of deception and lies.

I don't think that you'll see Jake with family or any other friends for awhile, or in any respectable, first-tier magazines for some time now. Unlike US Weekly, People and Star, these places have fact checkers. You can't lie to them and get away with it.

Reeke need to get as much face time in as possible because she's going to New Zealand to film soon. He won't be able to stage any pr events easily from five time zones away.

  8. I don't think you can compare actors working in television to actors in film when it comes to the effect coming out has.

And Perez is such a hypocrite. First, all the people he has outed have worked in television or music. Second, we all know he's in bed with pr when it comes to Reeke, and probably others as well. Now that he has television and music deals, Perez can't afford to piss off the powers that be. In some ways Perez is worse than the other gossip mongers who at least don't pretend to be a renegade.

Brolin and Alley sign on for Russell's "Nailed"

NEW YORK (Hollywood Reporter) - James Brolin is replacing James Caan in David O. Russell's "Nailed," with Kirstie Alley and Olivia Crocicchia also boarding the politically charged romantic comedy.

Caan departed the film three weeks ago, in large part because of a spat with Russell ("I Heart Huckabees") about the proper way for his politico character to choke on a cookie. Brolin can turn to his son Josh for advice: The younger Brolin will portray George W. Bush choking on a pretzel in a scene from Oliver Stone's upcoming biopic.

Alley, in her first feature role since 2002, will play a veterinarian who fails to remove a nail from the head of her niece (Jessica Biel). With the help of a disgruntled tween (Crocicchia), the injured woman travels to Washington to fight for better health care and falls for a congressman (Jake Gyllenhaal).

Brolin last played a politician in 2003, when he starred as Ronald Reagan in Showtime's "The Reagans."

  17. Brolin and Alley sign on for Russell's "Nailed"

The cast of Nailed is sounding worse and worse and the movie seems a mess already. I mean, we're talking TV movie of the week level here. Only Catherine Keener has any real comedic cred.

In some studio exec's addled mind, "risque political satire" plus Jake G making out with Jessica Biel (bleh) equalled boffo box office. So wrong.

Great that Jake is trying a comedy and this one may have sounded fine on paper, but Biel was a terrible casting choice. And don't give me any "giverr a chance" crap. She's thick as two planks and has no visible life going on behind her eyes. How about choosing smart beautiful funny Rachel McAdams, Amy Adams, or Isla brilliant Fisher. The movie is now all on Jake's shoulders and he has exactly nothing to play against.

Really too bad that Caan walked out.

  18. Nailed sounds like it's getting worse by the day. Bet that the movie will go straight to DVD. And, one of the comments on another site of the pics from the set on Monday, said that Reese and Jake looked so in love and the paps intruded on a private moment. What a laugh. Their in the middle of town, in front of town hall, on an open movie set, where the paps have been hanging around. They absolutely knew they were being photographed. They couldn't possibly stage this any more plainly.

  19. Josh Brolin will steal the movie. He stole scenes from Denzel and Crowe in "American Gangster" and he was very strong (but Javier ruled) in "No Country for Old Men." This is great news for "Nailed" because Brolin is guaranteed to be great.

  22. Wentworth Miller is going to have a fit after he reads that.

    Perez interview - Aug 30, 2007

Q: Can you explain why outing is so viscerally important to you?
A:I don't consider it outing. I consider it reporting. I am not speculating that Wentworth Miller is gay. I know Wentworth Miller is gay. One of my best friends dated Wentworth Miller. I know the person he's currently dating. I believe in equality. I'm not going to discriminate against gay and lesbian people because mainstream heterosexual society tells me that I should. John Mayer is currently having a secret relationship with Cameron Diaz. US Weekly and People magazine everyone is talking about it. So why is it okay for me to talk about John Mayer's secret relationship with Cameron Diaz but it's not OK for me to talk about Wentworth Miller's secret relationship with Luke McFarlane? Because there's still a lot of internalized homophobia in this country. There's still a lot of homophobic people who still think that being openly gay will hurt your career. And that's not true.

Q:It's not like you're saying you banged Wentworth Miller. This is the same grapevine that says Richard Gere had gerbils pulled out of his ass.
A:No this is first person. One of my best friends dated Wentworth for a long time.

Q:Okay, did you hang out with them as a romantic couple? Did you witness public displays of affection between Wentworth and your friend?
A:No because he's always been closeted. He would never be that public with my friend. But they still had a relationship.

Q: Does being closeted represent hypocrisy to you?
A: No. It represents fear. Obviously, he still has this fear that it will hurt his career which I think is an unfounded fear.

  23. James Brolin gets Nailed

James Brolin has stepped in to replace James Caan on the film “Nailed”, says The Hollywood Reporter. You’ll recall that hot-head Caan left the film over a fuckin’ cookie (He and director David O’ Russell fought about the proper way for his politico character to choke on a cookie).

The older Brolin has been doing some great stuff lately – check out his performance in Richard Shepard’s “The Hunting Party”, for starters. Son Josh might be getting all the attention… but Dad deserves some kudos too. He’s likely to give this role his all.

The first official production photo for Gus van Sant's Milk has been released and shows Sean Penn as Harvey Milk celebrating his 1977 election to the San Francisco Board of Supervisors, which made him the first openly gay man to be elected to office in a major U.S. city.

Producer Dan Jinks told EW: "[Sean] is playing a guy who's not at all like him, way beyond the sexuality of the character. Harvey was this guy who wants everybody to love him, and he loves everybody else. Sean just completely became that guy. It's a real transformation.''

RDJ even managed a (spectacular) comeback in his 40ies. Maybe he won't have blockbuster movies for a while, but he'll still get roles and 4 to 5 millions a film. Why feel sorry?
If it's not PR then he seems to like high profile girlfriends like Kirsten (back in the day she was) and now Reese.
I probably wouldn't have cared one way or the other about Reeke, but since I suspect that their clean image prevented him to pay respect to an important co-star of his, I became one of the few "fans" disgusted by his behaviour.

  37. 11:42 I would have accepted Jake saying nothing about Heath (yes, grief is private) if the shitstorm over Heath's drug use hadn't erupted and begun staining his memory in every possible way. When that happened, Heath needed friends -or colleagues- to set aside their own feelings and stand up and remind people that he was still a decent man and great actor despite the way he died. Some people with clear eyes and full hearts and courage of their convictions did so. Jake left Heath twisting in the wind.

For someone who admires men unafraid to do the right thing ... well, Jake is no Atticus Finch.

  58. Maggie Gyllenhaal on working with the dark and light

From interview by Tim Blanks, Interview magazine, May 2008.

In SherryBaby (2006), Maggie Gyllenhaal portrayed Sherry Swanson, who returns home after serving a prison sentence to reestablish a relationship with her young daughter. Gyllenhaal describes for Interview magazine her experience with the character, and the big change in her attitude toward appreciating roles that are “not so wayward.”

Maggie Gyllenhaal: We shot Sherrybaby in 25 days. I was never in my own clothes. I would get into her clothes, be her all day, come home, fall asleep, wake up, go back to work. I do better in that kind of work. What I found with Sherry was that she was in such a rough place that she didn’t have the luxury to feel any kind of self-pity or to fall apart at all, or she would not have been able to survive.

So I shot all these fucked-up scenes that were really horrible, but I didn’t experience them that way. Obviously, I understood that all the things that happened in the movie were painful for her, but I didn’t let that into the work.

Then all the terrible things I’ve had to go through surfaced after we’d finished shooting. And I got over it. I don’t think I could play that part now. I don’t know that I could be okay with the things I had to be okay with in order to play her.

Interview mag.: Were you in therapy when you did that film?

    Maggie Gyllenhaal: Mm-hmm.

Interview mag.: So was it exorcism? Catharsis?

Maggie Gyllenhaal: Well, that stuff is private, but every role I choose - whether consiously or unconsciously - there’s something in it that I have to think about and work through. . .

For a while, I got into taking someone really fucked-up and showing the audience how they were beautiful and lovable. That’s a way of practicing compassion. But now I want to play a queen! I want to play someone who’s thinking and elegant and not so wayward. I feel like a big change has happened.

Interview mag.: Here’s another observation from your press clippings: “Gyllenhaal clearly relishes taking a wrecking ball to anything perfect or beautiful in her own cinematic creations.” But I always suspected that you were happy to be beautiful in real life.

Maggie Gyllenhaal: That is not wrong about my work. It was also true in my life. What I thought was most beautiful was something a little fucked up, a little off. I think that’s a way of hiding. As an actress and a person. I feel different now. I’m not as interested in finding what is unattractive as I am in finding what is attractive. It’s much riskier to say, “I’m going to try and express what’s beautiful in me.”

    Reese Witherspoon vs. Integrity

This past weekend I participated in my 2nd Avon Walk for Breast Cancer. Last year I walked the 39 miles in 2 days with my mom - a 9-year survivor - and my sister in Boston. This year I decided to try the other side of the playing field and volunteer to be a part of the crew. Of course I jumped at the chance to be a part of the motorcycle crew, which is responsible for controlling people busy intersections - both walkers and drivers.

Every time I'm a part of this event - even the few times my mom did it by herself and we went up as a family to cheer her on - I'm blown away at how generous and driven people are. This year I got a small taste of the other group of people who seem to be unable to wait an extra 30 seconds for some of the 3000 people walking to make it through a crosswalk. All-in-all people were very supportive though.

One highlight this year for the Avon Foundation was their new honorary chair, Reese Witherspoon. She was going to come to the DC Walk and walk the last mile and a half or so with the walkers. Or so the crew was told (it was supposed to be hush-hush for the walkers, a big surprise). Instead, we got to closing ceremonies and found out that she showed up at the Avon office (about 1.3 miles from the finish line), stood outside for about 15 minutes, and then got back in her car and drove to the closing ceremonies. Being the bikers that we are, the moto safety crew of course had more jokes to tell about Reese than a person could handle. At the closing ceremonies she just added to the humor by saying "awesome" between 60-70 times, and "SO exciting" about 30-40 times. All in the span of her little 10 minute speech. I'll admit, I laughed my ass off because its funny to make fun of celebrities who think they can wing it and actually suck at speaking in public. That and she lived up to every single blond stereotype we could think of.

After I got home though I got to thinking - was her literal 15 minutes still worth it? Most of the walkers, and even some of the crew members, had no idea as to the extent of Reese's initial commitment, so the fact that a celebrity showed up at their event was enough for them. And just having her face attached to the organization will quite likely help push the fundraiser totals higher. But at what cost? Her integrity? Our integrity?

I'm normally the type of person that believes if you're going to care, then care. Pretending to care just upsets me. I feel a little like I'm being mocked for caring. Like the person is saying, "Oh look, I can do it too without caring, aren't you silly for taking the time to care." But as the daughter of someone who once relied on this type of funding just to stay alive, even considering being against a source of income for the cause is ripping me apart. It's almost like Hitler donating millions of dollars to help kids with cancer. Sure, he's helping kids with cancer in a way few can and is certainly desperately needed, but then again, what is behind that money? Obviously its not quite that controversial to most, but in many ways it is to me, largely due I'm sure to the personal investment I have in the cause.

    And so I ask...

If walking that last mile was obviously too much for her, should she have just skipped the whole thing or should we be grateful that she showed up at all?

Now I know that a lot of people don't like Angelina Jolie but she does walk the talk so to speak with the causes she supports. Even someone like Teri Hatcher or Eva Longoria, for god's sake, would have walked that mile with everyone else.

Reese is really a lazy, self-entitled diva. She and Jake are perfect for each other, after all, the entire world is their personal theme park. Bleech.

  64. I have not spoken up too much since WFT2 started. Kind of put off by Jake lately. I think a lot of the credit for how Jake looked in BBM goes to Ang. Every frame of that film was shot to perfection and he has mentioned in interviews that he was careful how he filmed Jake, that some angles did not show him to best advantage. Ang did not mention this as to Heath specfically, so maybe he was a bit more photogenic than Jake. I think Jake looks good, but his personality - the one he had before Reese- made him beautiful. But now, he looks just ok most of the time.

  67. Brokeback Mountain is probably one of the best films I have ever seen, and I think everyone was wonderful in it, but special tribute must go to Ang, for the loving way he directed it. The more I learn about Ang Lee, the more impressed I become. And yes, Heath was magnificent, and Jake was incredible in it - every time I watch it, I see something new in it, and I am astonished by their performances. Far from leaving this behind, I hope those who worked on it realize how lucky they were to be associated with it. Some actors never have that in their entire careers.

    ReplyDelete
  68. 10:19, I completely agree. And if Heath had lived (and this also applies to Jake who's still very much here)

    ReplyDelete
  69. I'm sorry I got pulled away--I meant to say if Heath had lived and this applies to Jake, it would have been hard to find another movie that tops BBM in terms of quality and impact.

    ReplyDelete
  70. 9:13 PM...you're right. Ang Lee did mention that he took care how he filmed Jake, but that Heath basically could be shot from every angle. I think Ang was very happy with both his boys, but various things he said - and didn't say - and that Charlie Rose interview, suggested that Heath was the actor he was in awe of.

Many directors were huge admirers of Heath. He was approaching a sort of mythic status in the industry even before he died. He also had major cred as an actor among his peers...and when people like Sean Penn, D Day-Lewis and Ryan Gosling respect you, it means something. Jake, while seen as pretty good, doesn't have this. Unfortunately for him, because it's what he wants.
    (Just like TomCruise.)

    ReplyDelete
  71. 11:21, I wouldn't exactly include Tom Cruise in that assessment of Jake. He may be dismissed by the public as a joke due his couch-jumping and Scientology but among fellow actors, he is very well regarded and well respected because 1) they do think he's a good actor who works hard; and 2) he's a movie star (or was), someone who helped vitalize the business for two decades, drawing audiences into movie theaters.

    ReplyDelete
  72. I'm anxious to see how Jake performs in Brothers. I thought he was OK in Zodiac and Rendition, but just OK. Nothing like BBM or even some of his prior roles. I wonder how all of this crap in his personal life will impact his ability to be there for the role. It must be a major distraction.

  73. "...I just read a harrowing piece about how nice it was back in the Fifties, to be a movie star, that is. It involves Raymond Burr, who had just struck it rich with “Perry Mason.” Burr was big and burly and gay as they come. Back in those good old days to be gay was a big no-no, and the poor man was terrified to be outed once he became a pop culture idol. He was a TV star, and did not have a big movie studio behind him to protect him, so he did the next best thing. He invented three deaths, one of his non-existent first wife whom he claimed had died in the same air crash as Leslie Howard, the death of his non-existent second wife, who supposedly died of cancer just after the birth of their son, and then, for good measure, he claimed his non-existent son also died from the disease after having spent a year travelling around the world with his father Raymond. Burr also fabricated military service during World War Two, including a non-existent Purple Heart. Reporters didn’t dare ask any questions about Burr’s agony, which was just as well. Natalie Wood, as troubled a child star as it was possible to be, went after Burr, convinced their tragic lives had many things in common, including great sexual appetites. She was deeply disappointed but never let on, as the sweet person that she was."

  87. Interview, Feb, 2003

Jake Gyllenhaal - Interview by Chelsea Clinton

Onscreen he wears angst and desperation like a badge of honor. Raging in the existential cult drama Donnie Darko (2001), crossing the fine line between passion and obsession in last summer's The Good Girl (in which his character, one Holden Worther, lugged a beat-up copy of The Catcher in the Rye across Texas in writer-director Miguel Arteta's shout-out to Salinger's protagonist), mourning the loss of life and youth in Moonlight Mile, Jake Gyllenhaal has become the movies' poster child for outsider, misfit characters. Not content to sit back and fit neatly into any one (or anyone's) category, he's shooting his first action movie, Roland Emmerich's Tomorrow. With a quirky hangdog charisma evoking Dustin Hoffman in The Graduate (1967), Gyllenhaal proves infectiously unpredictable onscreen and in interviews, as his pal Chelsea Clinton finds out.

CHELSEA CLINTON: Jake! How are you?

JAKE GYLLENHAAL: I'm good, thanks. Where are you? In London?

CC: Actually I am in Oxford, at school.

JG: Hmm. I dropped out of college, you know.

CC: [laughs] I know, my dear. And where are you now?

JG: I'm living it up in New York City right now.

CC: You told me recently that you're making an action movie. Will I see you on the screen baring your muscles and striking a rather exciting, dashing figure?

    JG: [laughs] Yeah. We're shooting on Martha's Vin--no, not Martha's Vineyard--Montreal.

CC: I wish you were shooting on Martha's Vineyard.

JG: I remember going to your father's 51st birthday on Martha's Vineyard, where we met. Both our families are friends with the Danson-Steenburgens [who hosted the party], and I was invited.

CC: We sat together at dinner.

JG: And we just immediately started talking. I'm going to the Vineyard next week with my mom.

CC: Your mother's such a heroine.

JG: She is. As is yours.

CC: Yes, she is. My parents are actually coming here, and I'm thrilled. My lather has visited me, but this will be the first opportunity I'll have had to share my Oxford with my mom.

JG: What are you studying, by the way?

CC: I am getting an MPhil, which is essentially a master's, in international relations. I am in the second year of a two-year program, currently working on my thesis. Tell me, how is your family? How's your sister?

JG: Maggie's great. She's doing this movie [Mona Lisa Smile] with Julia Roberts and a whole cast of beautiful women. She's working really hard. And her movie, Secretary, is doing so well.

CC: Her movie is doing so well. My mother liked it. But let's talk about you. You're making this action movie: Who are you in it?

JG: I'm Dennis Quaid's son. Does that say enough?

    CC: No, not really.

JG: Okay. It's called Tomorrow. It's about global warming, which, unfortunately, is a subject most people don't read up on. Maybe if it's presented in spectacular fashion they'll listen. You know?

CC: Right. Well, speaking of reading, are you reading anything interesting?

JG: I happen to be rereading my favorite book, [J.D. Salinger's] Franny and Zooey. Have you read that book?

CC: I have. Have you also read The Catcher in the Rye?

JG: Of course. Many times, actually.

CC: How old were you when you first read it?

JG: I think I was 12. We went on a family vacation to Hawaii, and my sister gave it to me for Christmas, and I remember I couldn't put it down. You know, my production company is called Nine Stories Productions, which is an homage to J.D. Salinger's book of short stories. After The Catcher in the Rye I read everything he wrote. And now I'm back on another kick, reading them all again.

CC: Are you finding different lessons in them now than you did when you were younger?

JG: I think now I have an appreciation of the specific more than the broad--the ideas, the sort of Buddhism that pervades all of Salinger's work.

You know, I think it's genius that J.D. Salinger doesn't want anybody to make a movie of his book, because there's no way anyone can play it. it is what it is to everybody. I've met many people who actually dislike it. Especially some women I know.

CC: Really? Why? In protest of the--and here I will try to shield those who haven't had the good fortune to read it yet--various tools Holden uses in his night of self-discovery?

JG: I don't want to be gender-specific, and I hate separating male from female, but I do think that male angst, especially in an adolescent boy's life, is very specific. I think girls moving into womanhood go through it earlier and in a somewhat different way. So by the time they're the age where boys start going through it, they've sort of already gone through it, and some people just don't relate.

CC: That's interesting. I don't think I've ever encountered anyone who has a vehement dislike for the book. I know people who don't like it as much as I would have anticipated they would, but I've never had the benefit of having to defend why I like it. It's a special experience to read it when you are at the age Holden is in the book. I had to read it in high school, and it really compelled me and my friends to think about where we were in our lives.

CC: I would encourage people to read it in the hope that maybe it would have a similar inspirational effect. Did you feel Holden Caulfield-esque while you were making The Good Girl? Do you even agree with your character's interpretation [of the book]?

JG: There's something about him that makes me think he's only read that one book. He's so lost that he just sort of takes on this "Holden" persona because he understands it's universal. There's a funny line in the movie where [Jennifer Aniston's character] says to my character, "Your name's Tom?" And he says, "Tom is my slave name. Holden's what I call myself."

CC: [laughs] I remember that part.

JG: The Malcolm X of white suburban boys.

Chelsea Clinton is currently a graduate student at Oxford University.

  108. Heath Ledgers Final Portrait by Vincent Vantauzzo

Here is the portrait of Heath Ledger by artist Vincent Vantauzzo, an Australian with whom Heath Ledger posed on his last visit to Perth in December 2007.

This is a rather interesting portrait. The first thing that came to my mind when looking at this portrait is the 2 poses of Heath that are whispering appear to be alter egos of somekind, perhaps good and evil.

The picture of Heath on the right side looks a bit lighter in color and he seems almost angelic.

The left picture of Heath appears darker and a bit more sinister or develish if you will. You can see his tatoos and his expression is hidden and dark. Also, he is closer to the picture of Heath in the middle. What is he whispering to himself?

  110. Re Brothers…The buzz is pretty much zero so far. (If there’s a very good performance in the offing, the studio usually leaks something or the crew chatters or other actors talk about it.)

Sheridan is a respected director but both "In the Name of the Father" and "My Left Foot" (and "The Boxer") were made long ago…and lifted to higher levels by Daniel Day-Lewis. Sheridan's strength is particularly in storytelling and screenplay, however on Brothers he gave that task to David Benioff (ridiculous Troy) and just as in Kite Runner (a worthy bore), when something original and great is rewritten by a hack, it inevitably ends up worse.
There's also the risk that Sheridan will allow Jake to fall back on his ultra-sincere acting style. (He gave quite free reign to Day-Lewis but that's a very different type of actor.) David Fincher nailed Jake's limitation when he said "I hate earnestness in performance." So it remains to be seen if Jake can play “boozing and womanizing” (how the bad brother starts out) with any conviction. Natalie Portman is often unconvincing in the roles she plays, too.
The original Brothers had outstanding acting. Jake is going to have to pull out all the stops. Tobey may surprise people but...two blands don't make a fight...

    ReplyDelete
  113. Of working with Ledger, Fantauzzo said:

"Heath was a very private person, which is one of the reasons I was so honoured that he allowed me to paint him. He was so easy and professional to work with. He didn't need any direction, (he was) absolutely focused. Once done, he was back to his usual charismatic self."

    ReplyDelete
  114. "When Vincent Fantauzzo began sketching his friend Heath Ledger for an Archibald portrait last year, he had no idea it would become an unofficial shrine to the young actor. But the picture has drawn record crowds, triggered a flood of emails and attracted six-figure offers. The portrait is odds-on favourite to win the People's Choice Award in a landslide and its popularity has helped the Archibald exhibition draw twice the number of visitors as last year. Fantauzzo, 29, has been overwhelmed by the public reaction to his painting. "I've had thousands of emails. I still get between 20 and 50 every day," the Melbourne artist says. "People say they feel like the painting is a tribute, something to remember him by, because it was more like him than his movies." . . . When Ledger died in January, Fantauzzo considered withdrawing the portrait from the competition, but was convinced by the late actor's mother to enter it. . . . He has been offered "hundreds of thousands" of dollars, but will honour his promise to give the painting to Ledger's mother, Sally. . . . The young painter didn't even think the portrait would be accepted by the prestigious prize when he first started work on it. "My confidence was a bit low so he [Ledger] kept trying to boost me up a bit. He kept saying, 'It's going to be great, it'll win'."

The Australian singer-songwriter debuted in 1996 as the frontman and singer of the pop duo Savage Garden which had the hots "I Want You", "To the Moon and Back," "Truly Madly Deeply," "I Knew I Loved You" and "The Animal Song." Savage Garden sold more than 23 million albums worldwide before parting ways in 2001. Hayes released his first solo album, "Spin" in 2002 and last year released "This Delicate Thing We've Made," his most personal collection of songs - ever.

Darren entered into a civil partnership with his boyfriend of three years, Richard Cullen, on June 19, 2006 in London and announced it on his official website the next month. I interviewed him last fall and here is what he had to say about being an out singer:

"I don't see myself as a gay artist at all. I see myself as a human being. On the surface, I don't think my marriage or being gay reeally colors my music. But being out and being in a beautful relationship has made me feel better about myself. What that has done is made me brave in every area of my life. From launching my own label, making a double album. It's made me really brave and i think that kind of shows in the music that I''m making."

Montgomery Clift was the original Lindsay Lohan—he was the first uninsurable actor in Hollywood! On top of that, Marilyn Monroe said he was the only person more screwed up than she was, and that was extremely screwed up, folks. He, of course, was the brooding, beautiful star of films like From Here to Eternity and A Place in the Sun who was deeply tortured and who suffered for his craft (not to mention from a car accident). So there's no doubt that Monty's life would make for a riveting drama. And sure enough, here comes the play: The Rarest of Birds, coming to the Wings Theatre starting June 1.

Says the release: “He spoke six languages. Elizabeth Taylor begged him to marry her. He was friends with Picasso, Matisse and Gertrude Stein... HE was Montgomery Clift, the subject of an upcoming play penned by playwright and actor John Lisbon Wood and starring Omar Prince...The show is a must see for students of cinema, the Golden Era of Hollywood, movie buffs and historians, archivists of gay life and all theater aficionados.” And even some straight people!

WTF. Wooden almost actor Jake Gyllenhaal apparently dated wooden former first daughter Chelsea Clinton, according to Star. In 1999! When he wasn't even famous! Apparently their parents knew each other. We don't buy a word of this. Why is it coming out now? Last-ditch effort to rescue Hillary Clinton's campaign with star power? Also according to this story, Chelsea Clinton thinks Jake should marry Reese Witherspoon. According to a "source."

  155. Thanks Natalie

I'm way too lazy to look it up, but a few months ago I wrote a post about Wuthering Heights and how the UK was all in a tizzy because the producers were going to cast American actors. Well, they did cast Natalie Portman and she then proceeded to give them a list of demands which they met, and then after that she said she wasn't interested and backed out of the project.

Thanks a bunch Natalie. You basically have ruined it for everyone now. Instead of doing what you were supposed to be doing, you are probably back in New York hanging out with that tool of a boyfriend of yours who walks around with a c**k as his glasses. Yes, it's true, and odd that her boyfriend and another guy went sex toy shopping together. I don't know about the rest of you but when I go sex toy shopping I don't usually take along another guy.

Meanwhile because she told everyone she was going to do the part, Sienna Miller and Keira Knightley both have committed to other projects. Here is my advice to the producers. As I mentioned in my previous post there have been about 100 different Wuthering Heights projects. What I suggest is you go the Airplane! or Scary Movie route and just make it a spoof on all the other period pieces. Sure, no one will get your references, but throw in some nudity and some fart jokes and you will probably get more ticket sales than the way you are going now. I mean the only people who are going to see it are, well, honestly, no one. How did you get financing for this thing anyway?

  161. Robert Gant plays the first gay spy

AB: Speaking of being gay and acting - do you feel that being openly gay has limited your career in any way?

RG: There is no way for me to really measure that. That said, I would venture that there are parts that I have not gotten because I’m openly gay, and there are parts I have gotten because I’m openly gay, and that there are plenty of them that just didn’t matter one way or the other. I think that is pretty much going to be the case across the board.

Now, I think the determination is really a personal one and an individual one; it has to do with where you are as a person. I wouldn’t trade coming out for the world, and I would even say that it was good for my career. I say that because, one I want to affirm that, one, and two, because I think that… Russell Davies said that being a gay man gave him his career and I got it - I was like, yeah, you know, certainly, God knows with “Queer as Folk.” And so much of that for me has to do with what it’s done for me as an actor, and what it’s done for me as a human being—it shows up very differently in my life across the board.

In terms of my acting work, my acting work has improved vastly as a result of not having to use so much energy to maintain the façade. And to keep that in place also keeps a certain amount of inauthenticity in place, so as a performer or actor, I think that can be very detrimental—it was for me, certainly.

But I think there’s plenty of phobia. There’s homophobia along all ranks, certainly there’s plenty in Hollywood and there’s plenty of internalized homophobia. And at the same time, there are younger generations coming into power. I get emails from agents and writers and producers who are now in some positions of power who are like, “You know what, I really have a lot of respect for you…” I’d say it’s a little bit of the older and even middle-aged guard who still haven’t processed as much of that stuff, even though they may have kids and a full life as a gay person. It’s generational.

It’s also because this town, as much as entertainment is intertwined to some extent with messaging and social consciousness, it’s really a business. Above all else, it’s about ticket sales. So even if something wouldn’t really compromise ticket sales, there are going be some people who just don’t want to take a chance.

AB: We are also seeing a change in Hollywood in another way—we’ve also got Neil Patrick Harris and T.R. Knight who are out, and I think that’s really incredible.

RG: The last great frontier is the openly gay leading-man-type guy, and that’s the frontier that a number of us are all slowly crossing. Neil Patrick Harris playing that part, it’s a contribution in that direction. It’s a comedy, and that’s easier for people to embrace, and he’s probably not as much your classic leading man type, although he’s certainly more so than we’ve seen. And T.R. also, like it’s another move forward, another contribution to the whole effort of crossing this frontier. And gradually that’s happening, it’s like all progress: you make small steps here and there and eventually there’s a big leap. Forward progress is also not a straight line–we’ll move forward and we’ll move back a little bit–which is why I’m not so concerned with all the minutiae, this or that state statute. Collectively we’re moving forward, and I really enjoy my life.

    Two possibilities:
    1. engagement story is fake and they really got "engaged" in the William Morris office when their reps presented them with a ring and an idea on how to capitalize on the unexpected preganancy.

    2. Reese is so bitter and angry that she looks for ways to use the press to print stories that will get back to Ryan and piss him off because in real life he totally ignores her.

  164. "Reese is so bitter and angry that she looks for ways to use the press to print stories that will get back to Ryan and piss him off."

It's obivious that she's pissed at him. Apparently, he left her months before they announced their divorce. She spent years trying to portray the happily married couple and Ryan blew it for her. Look at the Mexico trip, same time as the week Ryan's movie came out. The whole Reekemance is so she can look like a poor woman who tried so hard to save her marriage and has now moved on and found another true love who treats her like a goddess and a second father to her kids. If Reese's PR is reading, this may be a good time for the romance to start cooling off-Jake's on location far away and Reese could say that distance and his diva behaviour pulled them apart.

Reese is an icy control freak and snob who mocked Ryan's family background and taste, so I have sympathy for him. He was drunk at the Oscars on the night of her big win because the marriage was long over and she was forcing him to play the charade for her career. The reason they split was not the cheating, it was because he fell for Abby Cornish. Otherwise, they'd still be together, trust. Reese has proved she's capable of living a marriage that's a lie for years, so why not a fauxmance with Jake, who, um, like her, may also have a low sex drive.

  169. "DRAMA! David O. Russell Film On Hold? Jessica Biel & Jake Gyllenhaal Sidelined?

EXCLUSIVE: I'm told by knowledgeable sources that David O. Russell's indie pic Nailed may have been put on hold yesterday. It's a risque political comedy starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Jessica Biel who sources say are standing by to see if the movie can continue to completion. The script co-written by Al Gore's daughter Kristen (once a staff writer on Futurama) and Russell began filming April 15th. Details are sketchy, but I've gleaned that the pic's predicament is related to its financing, not to its helmer Russell. True, the temperamental director is known for turbulent shoots especially when it comes to actors. Already on Nailed, Jimmy Caan quit the South Carolina set two weeks ago after he and the helmer couldn't agree on the best way for the actor to choke to death on a cookie during a scene. (Caan’s role of U.S. Speaker Of the House was being recast before this new problem.) Russell also had well-documented differences with George Clooney (the two came to blows on the set of Three Kings) and Lily Tomlin (profane exchanges on the set of I Heart Huckabees... See my previous Lily 'Liberated' By F-Bomb/C-Word Video). But now the pic's woes go way beyond just a tense set. There are a lot of rumors circulating, and I'm trying to separate what's fact and what's fiction. The film focuses on a naive small town waitress (Biel) who gets a nail lodged in her head and discovers a new-found sexual drive. When she travels to Washington to fight for better health care for the "bizarrely injured", she meets an unscrupulous U.S. congressman (Gyllenhaal) who attempts to take advantage of her. The movie also stars James Marsden, Catherine Keener and Tracy Morgan. Those are a lot of name actors to be sidelined. One source with insider knowledge about the production tells me, "The actors are waiting to see if the movie will continue. It's kind of amazing, really.""

    Ask the Flying Monkey

Q: Can men be gay icons? I have a straight friend who's always asking me if celebrities like Ian McKellen and T.R. Knight are "gay icons," and I keep trying to tell him there's a difference between a gay icon and a gay role model. Do you think any men, gay or straight or somewhere in between, have achieved "iconic" status? (My friend always defends his case by arguing that Chuck Norris is the ultimate "straight icon"...) -- Tom, Koreatown, CA

A: This is a tough one, but I think I agree with your friend.

It’s true that when I hear “gay icon,” I tend to think Cher! Liza! Dolly! Mariah! Bette Davis!

But what is a “gay icon” anyway? There’s some sort of larger-than-life quality about them, some refusal to compromise who they are just to conform to the expectations of others (because they ultimately can’t change what isn’t quite “right” about them anyway). But these icons somehow manage to take the very thing that might make others reject them — a big nose, for example, or a hillbilly twang — and, through the sheer force of their will (not to mention considerable talent), they force the world to accept them completely on their own terms. They turn their “flaws” into assets. Plus, they get to wear sparkly stuff.

What gay guy can’t relate to that?

I think it is harder for a guy to be a gay icon because — let’s face it — men make the rules in life, so the odds are never quite as long for them. And — let’s also face it — society tends to frown on flamboyance in men even more than it does big noses or a hillbilly twang in women.

But surely some men qualify as gay icons: Elton John? RuPaul? Freddie Mercury? Cary Grant? Quentin Crisp? Noel Coward? Paul Lynde? David Bowie? Not surprisingly, many of these icons are or were gay.

    Ask the Flying Monkey

Q: In your opinion, what’s the greatest real-life gay love story? – E.M., Newark, NJ

A: No doubt there are many, many long-term same-sex love affairs that we’ll never know anything about, because the people involved couldn’t be out, or because the media censored the information about their love.

Playwright Tennessee Williams had a relationship with Frank Merlo from 1947 until Merlo’s death in 1963. Like his sister Rose (the inspiration for Laura in The Glass Menagerie), Williams suffered from mental illness (and addiction). But Merlo brought stability to Williams’ life and enabled him to write some of the greatest plays of the 20th century, including the Pulitzer Prize-winning pair, A Streetcar Named Desire and Cat on a Hot Tin Roof.

If they hadn’t been gay, this would have been a movie starring a chain-smoking Jane Fonda and a grizzled Jason Robards ages ago.

And speaking of Pulitzer Prize-winning playwrights, Edward Albee’s long-term partner died several years ago, and he recently talked about it to the New York Times: “We had such a good, long relationship: nearly 35 years,” Albee said. “That’s a long time, a life in itself. Of course that makes it worse, but at the same time you can’t just say, ‘How dare you go away from me?’ — which is an attitude that a lot of people get. ‘How dare you die!’ There’s got to be a lot of ‘Thank you’ too. ‘Thank you for being alive and being with me for so long.’”

On the lighter side, the Monkey once interviewed actor Dick Sargent (the second “Darrin” on Bewitched) shortly before his death in 1993. Sargent, who had recently come out, told me how happy his life had been with his partner, Albert Williams, despite the lengths they’d had to go to hide their being gay. For a time, Sargent even pretended to date lesbian writer-actress Fannie Flagg, appearing on game shows together as boyfriend and girlfriend.

A more recent love story that would be an instant TV movie if the couple involved wasn’t gay: Iraqi hostage James Loney and his Canadian husband Dan Hunt. Hunt and Loney's family tried hard to hide the fact that James is gay, so as to not potentially inflame his kidnappers. Just imagine the screen tension!

  186. ON SET DRAMA UPDATE: SAG Orders Actors On David O. Russell Film To Leave; Jessica Biel & Jake Gyllenhall Sidelined

EXCLUSIVE! SATURDAY AM UPDATE: I'm told by knowledgeable sources that David O. Russell's indie political comedy Nailed which began filming April 15th was shut down by the Screen Actors Guild on Thursday because of a "cash crunch". I've also learned the shoot is in trouble with both the IATSE and Teamsters unions, and some members have left the beleaguered production. Rumors also are circulating that the state of South Carolina could withdraw its incentive monies because of the financing problems. 187. From the same site, by Nikki Finke:

"As for Fox's What Happens in Vegas and its tired "been-there, done-that" plot, stars Ashton Kutcher and Cameron Diaz didn't deliver much box office firepower playing newlyweds. But the first-time-paired duo haven't been hot at the cineplex individually for a long while. Again, this is a case of movie stars, not box office stars. Some marketing mavens are hanging this on Ashton. "Guys just do not like him. He's a pretty boy toy and not someone guys feel they connect to," said an insider. "The upside is that the film cost only $35 million." Fox's well-oiled marketing machinery can make something out of nothing, and did that again here."
