Gay Power in Numbers

"Whether you love him or hate him, there's no denying that Perez Hilton - aka Mario Armando Lavandeira Jr. - has Hollywood by the balls with his constantly updated, hilarious and often vicious celebrity-gossip blog, PerezHilton.com.

MW: Didn't you tell Howard Stern the blog originally had something to do with Clay Aiken?
Hilton: Well that's the reason I stopped using my [real] name: I started getting death threats from Clay Aiken fans.

MW: Serious death threats?
Hilton: Serious to the point where they started two hate Web sites against me. They put up my home address, my home phone number, [and] a picture of my apartment building. That's pretty hardcore, I would say.

MW: What were you saying about Clay Aiken that set them off?
Hilton: Just that he's gay. He's repeatedly denied it.

MW: Why do you think it's okay to out people?
Hilton: Because I'm not doing anything differently than what you do with your friends. I'm sure when you talk to your friends, and when you talk about Clay Aiken, you talk about his being a big queen.

I view the Web site like I'm talking to my friends. I'm not making anything up. And also, I only like to say someone is definitely gay when I know that they definitely are. I probably was the first person to talk about Wentworth Miller being gay, and that's because he is. He's denied it, but that's okay. His ex-boyfriend, Luke Macfarlane, just came out of the closet.

MW: Why is it so important to you?
Hilton: There's definitely power in numbers. And also the more there are being openly gay, the less of a stigma is attached to being openly gay and the less fear there is around it.

There are so many closeted lesbian and gay actors and celebrities -- and most of them are afraid to come out because they're afraid it's going to hurt their careers. I don't believe that. I don't think it's going to hurt their careers. I know that it's not going to hurt their careers. In the past it may have been a different story, but I can't think of a single case in the last five years where someone has come out of the closet and it's hurt their career. In fact, it helps."

Someone on IMDB, on the Prince of Persia board, claims Jake is definitely cast a s POP. His upcoming projects also include the "Untitled Moonproject" and the "Joe Namath" bio. He'll be busy in the next few years!

IMDb post: The prince is Jake and the princess is Gemma. Disney will be announcing it by the end of the month.

Jake could get that role, but I bet IMDb poster isn't an insider.

Who is Gemma?

Thanks! How do you know?

It's just a rumor so far - check out IMDb Prince of Persia: Sands of Time (2009) posts.

I think Gemma will be beautiful as the Princess. She has the right eyes, or something, like the character. :)

The prince of Persia is a trilogy, if he gets the part, and it looks like it, it's a guaranteed BO success. It looks like many support the idea of him being cast, which is good!

Anonymous said...

Fingers crossed, I think the Prince of Persia trilogy will be lots of fun for us, and lucrative for the actors! He'll be beyond gorgeous in it, and Gemma's beautiful too - they'll be good together. :)

Anonymous said...

Supposedly he'll get 40 million dollars for PoP.
A while ago someone posted a quote by Jake that he only wants to do meaningful movies and that money isn't important.
This raises the question, then why did he desperately try to get the Spiderman role? Even Kirsten tried hard to get him in! And now this, if PoP isn't for fame and money, I don't know what is! ;)

Anonymous said...

Well, realistically, they have to make money to live. Why not? It also gives him freedom to make smaller films for less money if he chooses to. Bascially, it gives him freedom, in many ways. At first look, it seems like good casting. :)

^^Also, I don't think the occasional mainstream film is selling out. I wonder if the stalling of Nailed will cause problems for Jake for PoP? I hope not. :)

Now you see why he wants to get out of Nailed! Although I suspect that he does want to get nailed. ;)

Oh, and I really think that the Untitled Moon Movie Project was a plant/trial balloon to signal his deep interest in a blockbuster film.

Well, realistically, they have to make money to live.

They have so much more than they need to live! Honestly, I think Hollywood stars are paid too much money.
The highest paid actors get 25-30 millions for a film and the highest paid actresses, Reese and Angelina, make 15-20 per film!
It's insane!

Anonymous said...

^^^ Not for every movie.

Anonymous said...

Now you see why he wants to get out of Nailed!

He only did the movie because the Gore girl who co-wrote it wanted him in the part!
It still may turn out to be a decent film!

Not for every movie.

Perhaps not for every movie, but they are still very well paid for every movie they do!

Anonymous said...

True, it's insane the amount of money actors make compared to us regular folks. Money enough to live means something entirely different for them. But why not? Good for him. He seems like the kind of person who when they have good fortune, would give back a little. :)

Now you see why he wants to get out of Nailed!

There is nothing to support your hunch.

I hope he is!

Definitely not for every movie.

Yes, they are overpaid and Hollywood is well aware of that:

6:43 PM, I don't even think it's that important what actor is in the movie if the movie gets good reviews and word of mouth.
Of course there'll always be obsessed fangurls/boys who'll watch every crap their favourite actor stars in!
I did this with Brad Pitt!;)

Doesn't sound so bad.

Actually, it's not good at all. Nailed is a troubled production.

What's worrisome for Jake is that rumor about diva-ish behavior on his part. True or not, that kind of gossip indicates a tense set with some blame being apportioned to one of the names. Below-the-line people will grumble but put up with a difficult actor - as will studios - as long as the actor delivers the box office. Jake can't really afford whispers about being temperamental at this point.

PoP will do well with fanbois no matter who stars in it, so it's a good $$$ bet for Jake (though surely that's what people told Emile Hirsch about Speed Racer).

Can you see into the future?

Anonymous said...

Everything about Nailed is dodgy... the cast, the story and now the production!

Anonymous said...

That is something about the Nailed film being in trouble with financing. Not good at all. I just watched SNL with Shia Labeouf. Very funny and alot of gay references in the skits.

Anonymous said...

Prince of Persia sounds like something Orlando Bloom would do. Is that the kind of career Jake wants?

Anonymous said...

That’s right being in 2 trilogies which were all a huge BO hit hasn’t helped Orlando much, has it? He can’t seem to find work. I don’t see how it’s going to be any different for Jake. Maybe instead of wasting his time plotting to make his fauxmance believable he should work on his acting, but I always forget that he’s not interested in the craft only in fame and money.

Anonymous said...

Good points 4.51. anyway PoP is still only a rumor. Probably planted by Jake's PR! Let's wait and see.....

POP could be a challenge after all,
not so bad

Seemingly the joe namath biopic and the moon project are not cancelled

he will be very busy next year

ON SET DRAMA UPDATE: SAG Orders Actors On David O. Russell Film To Leave; Jessica Biel & Jake Gyllenhall Sidelined

EXCLUSIVE! 3rd UPDATE: See new details about Capitol Films below. I'm told by knowledgeable sources that David O. Russell's indie political comedy Nailed which began filming in April was shut down by the Screen Actors Guild on Friday because of insufficient funds on deposit with the guild. I've also learned the Columbia, S.C. shoot is in trouble with both IATSE and Teamsters, and some of those union members have left the beleaguered $25 million budgeted production. Rumors also are circulating that the state of South Carolina could withdraw its incentive monies because of the financing problems. Filmmakers hope to resolve the cash crunch and re-start shooting next week since principal photography is only at the halfway point. "I am confident we will finish," an insider on the pic just told me. "The financing on this like most indies is based on bank loans and bridge loans. This is a matter of waiting on the bridge loan. Hopefully, it will all be resolved."

But new information coming my way says David Bergstein's Capitol Films behind the pic is troubled. In 2006, he acquired a leading UK-based international sales company which over the years had built a good reputation in the movie biz and made a wide range of commercial and critical successes, including Robert Altman's Gosford Park. But now I'm hearing from NYC film financing circles that "a shitload of people are owed a lot of money," in the words of one expert in the field. "I heard this week that his major financing source, a hedge fund, has shut down and left him in the lurch."

The filmmakers were able to get in a full day of shooting Thursday until SAG put its figurative foot down to protect its members during traditionally more dicey independent productions. I'm told co-stars Jake Gyllenhaal and Jessica Biel and the other name actors are all standing by to see if the movie can continue to completion. Some left the location for the weekend to spend Mothers Day with their families. My sources say James Brolin, who replaced Jimmy Caan after the veteran thesp got into a creative battle with Russell and quit, flew in early in the week and completed all his scenes before the movie was shut down. An insider confirms for me: "It's been touch and go the entire time. The financiers are doing the best they can. There's been a cash crunch, that's for sure. It's a drag, but they'll muddle through. Everyone seems happy and committed to the movie and hopeful all this stuff will get worked out."

Nailed is based on the novel Sammy's Hill authored by Al Gore's daughter Kristin (once a staff writer on the TV series Futurama) who co-wrote the script with Russell. The pic's predicament is unrelated to its helmer. True, the temperamental director is known for turbulent shoots especially when it comes to actors. Already on Nailed, Jimmy Caan stalked off the South Carolina set two weeks ago after he and the helmer couldn't agree on the best way for the actor to choke to death on a cookie during a scene. The film focuses on a naive small town waitress (Biel) who gets a nail lodged in her head and discovers a new-found sexual drive. When she travels to Washington to fight for better health care for the "bizarrely injured", she meets an unscrupulous U.S. congressman (Gyllenhaal) who attempts to take advantage of her. Brolin plays the U.S. Speaker Of The House. The movie also stars James Marsden, Catherine Keener, and Tracy Morgan. Those are a lot of name actors to be sidelined. One source with insider knowledge about the production told me Friday, "The actors are waiting to see if the movie will continue. It's kind of amazing, really."

PoP will do well with fanbois no matter who stars in it, so it's a good $$$ bet for Jake (though surely that's what people told Emile Hirsch about Speed Racer).

"Warner Bros' Speed Racer won't crawl past $20 million this weekend. That's half what the studio hoped, even with lowered expectations. The anime actioner also is doing dismally in key areas of its 30+ day and date opening foreign territories. Its Saturday take of $7.6 million was only 25% higher than Friday's indicating a smallish bump from kiddie matinees. The Wachowski siblings' pic which cost at least $160M pic could finish the weekend battling for No. 2 with Fox's What Happens in Vegas, which cost only $35 million."

Donnie Darko Sequel On The Way
Wait...what?

Why? That's all we want to know, why? Screen Daily says this morning that there is a sequel to Donnie Darko not just planned, but actually happening. If you haven't seen Donnie Darko then spoilers follow. S. Darko will pick up seven years after the death of Donnie, with youngest Darko Samantha, now 18, and her best friend Corey being plagued by bizarre visions while on a roadtrip to Los Angeles.

Richard Kelly, director of Donnie Darko, is not involved in any official capacity and directing duties will instead be taken over by Chris Fisher (Nightstalker). Daveigh Chase, who played Samantha in Kelly's film, will reprise her role, and be joined by Ed Westwick, Briana Evigan and Justin Chatwin.

Again, we ask, why? If ever there were a film less demanding of a sequel, it's Donnie Darko. It tied its story up quite neatly, bringing it absolutely full circle. There were no loose ends. We don't even remember what Samantha did. Of course, a film can't be judged on quality until it's seen, but we fail to see the reason for a sequel's existence – other than, y'know, money.

Mug Shot Friday

Okay, I can't imagine I'll find enough material to make this a regular feature, but after being inspired by this post and kind of allowing my mind to drift around Austin Nichols all day, I present to you one of my very favorite mug shots of all time.

Once again, not a promotional photo from John From Cincinnati. Actual mug shot. So fantastic.
