I read about the sudden "scheduling conflicts" for Burn This and had to laugh. Sounds like the misleading Into the Woods narrative back in 2013. There was all this press about how Jake was going to play Rapunzel's suitor, yet if readers paid any attention at all, there was no way he could do the project because it conflicted with his Nightcrawler production schedule that Fall. A schedule that had already been published and talked about as early as March.
Later on, PR tried to cover up the deception by floating the dramatic story that Anna Kendrick was so upset with Jake when he "dropped out". How she texted him with the message, "'You're abandoning me, and I'm never going to forgive you!'" Yeah, right. Sell it somewhere else. Jake's team do this kind of bait and switch promotion for two reasons. 1) Make it seem that Jake is more popular and up for more high profile roles than he is. 2) Make it seem like Jake is working non-stop and therefore can't have any family obligations
Management loves to attack bloggers/civilians who use social media to call them out on their nonsense and accuse them of writing fan fiction about their clients. In actuality, it is Management who makes their stock in trade in fan fic. Classic blame shifting in the hopes no one notices that they are the ones who are actually making sh*t up. Particularly, when it comes to closet cases.

Though Mr. Gyllenhaal was charming (and generally on key) in another musical night to remember at City Center, as the nerdy monster plant feeder in “Little Shop of Horrors” last year, he did not seem like an obvious candidate for leading us through the musical labyrinths of Sondheim. But this screen actor (whose announced return to Broadway in Lanford Wilson’s “Burn This” has been delayed) continues to surprise us onstage.

Rather, Jake Gyllenhaal and Annaleigh Ashford were making it an extraordinary one—after only four days of rehearsal, that is—in a special gala concert performance of Stephen Sondheim’s and James Lapine’s musical “Sunday in the Park With George.” (There are two more performances on Wednesday of the show, directed by Mr. Lapine’s niece, Sarna Lapine.)
David and Julia Koch, Anne Bass, Rachel Feinstein, Ruth Wilson, Clive Davis, Anna Wintour and Bee Shaffer, Fran and Barry Weissler, producer Riva Marker, William Ivey Long, Stacy Bash-Polley, Eric and Stacey Mindich, Laurie Eustis, Naomi Foner, Maggie Gyllenhaal and Peter Sarsgaard and Kelli O’Hara were just some of the guests who came to see Mr. Gyllenhaal tackle the role of pointillist painter Georges Seurat made famous, in 1984, by Mandy Patinkin, not to mention also honor Adrienne Arsht.
“I can’t sing. I can’t even hum,” said Ms. Arsht, before the performance began. “I can’t dance. I’m still working on my shuffle. I can’t act. I’ve got messy handwriting and I can’t paint. What I can do is give contributions to the arts.”
After the performance, everyone retired to the Plaza, where the Terrace Room had been decorated to evoke the Île de la Grande Jatte, complete with painter’s palettes with table numbers, oversize parasol umbrellas and lots and lots of macarons.
Mr. Gyllenhaal performed in a City Center concert of “Little Shop of Horrors” in the summer of 2015, but singing “Sunday in the Park With George” “is so much harder,” he said. Plus only those four days of rehearsal. He added that Ms. Ashford, who stars as Seurat’s muse, Dot, just had a baby five weeks ago and thought she was coming down with a cold.
Bernadette Peters, a friend of Ms. Arsht’s who played the original Dot opposite Mr. Patinkin, was particularly moved. She said this was only the third time she’d seen “Sunday”—once the original production with her understudy “and I still felt I was in it,” another at the Roundabout’s 2008 revival.

So how was Monday in the dark with Jake?
One word: Bliss.
That sums up City Center’s exhilarating concert staging of Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine’s 1984 musical. The show concerns 19th-century impressionist Georges Seurat, along with the burdens and blessings of the creative process. It insists that “art isn’t easy.” And that's true of some of Sondheim’s tricky melodies and lyrics.
But Gyllenhaal, who delighted last year as Seymour in “Little Shop of Horrors” on the same stage, made it look easy breezy while packing his performance with fire and longing. As he dabbed Seurat’s imaginary paint brush, the audience dabbed real tears.
He’s in wonderful company.
That goes double for Annaleigh Ashford, who plays Seurat’s model, Dot, and his elderly daughter when the show leaps forward in time. Known for roles on TV in “Masters of Sex” and Broadway in “You Can’t Take It With You,” for which she won a Tony, Ashford is irresistible. She radiates a rare and special warmth you want to wrap yourself in.
You wish her late-in-the-show duet with Gyllenhaal, “Move On,” would never end. “Give us more to see,” she urges.
If only.
The nearly sold-out show, whose starry, sterling ensemble includes Phylicia Rashad and Zachary Levi, wraps its run on Wednesday night.

FilmNation will launch foreign sales next week on the June Pictures title, based on the Richard Ford novel, at the American Film Market. WME is handling domestic sales.

When cover-up for a deeply closeted individual is going to be needed, the battle plan should be proactively in place as well as effective. When all of the pieces are not in place however, the leaks in the dike of cover-up begin spouting everywhere so that witnesses are left with a puzzle as easy as....
We knew who was in New York City this past weekend. Anyone in Jake's fandom knew. Jake was in the Big Apple; he was rehearsing for Sunday In The Park With George for the NYC Center Gala held at the City Center, leading up to opening night last night, Oct. 24.
So what started on Oct 22 with a beard-hosted Halloween pumpkin carving party...
Oh, wait - I'm sorry. I forgot there wasn't a picture to post of the couple to document that particular event. (The wonderful Frank Drebin in assistance.)
But then on Oct. 23 here came the Agents of Shield crew trying to place Austin at an LA Galaxy soccer game. And just for GPS purposes, the timing is well documented:

Let's see, you have half of the men photo'd with their SO's on their lap, and then there's Austin and Chlo...... oh. Looks like Jennifer Grey isn't on her SO Clark Gregg's lap because she was needed at Chlo's side. Yeah, I think that's what was going on there. And Austin barely made it into the pic. Amazing, isn't it? Mgmnt had their money shot opportunity right there. Put Chlo in Austin's lap like the other fellas. But they didn't get it.
Now what was going on later that evening, on October 23? The big season opener of The Walking Dead. #1 rated show in television. Number One. Fans were excited enough about the event to trend The Walking Dead all day on Twitter. All day and all night. The ratings knocked out Sunday Night NFL Football! There was a red carpet premiere held at the Hollywood Forever Cemetary in Los Angeles with major cast members. Here's the group pic:
Norman Reedus, Andrew Lincoln, Steven Yeun, all of the major actors were there. Even Austin's buddy Chris Hardwick, remember him? Austin supposedly attended his big wedding gala this past summer, complete with bolo tie. Chris was there to host a Talking Dead event after the season opener premiered.
But someone's missing in that cast picture. Austin is. Perhaps he and Chlo were walking the dogs and grilling burgers with the Agents of Shield family. So, in a nutshell. Management would have folks believe that Austin and his 'gf' would rather attend an LA Galaxy game on Sunday afternoon followed by whatever, than attend an important career event like the premiere of The Walking Dead.

Gonna Need A Little Bit More of That Mortar Over Here!
Because we here at Narnia don't like to keep pleasant surprises all to ourselves, we thought we would share a couple of quick notes tonight. Quick being the key word, blink and you might miss them.

Of course, if the World Series is still being played, there may need to be some multi-tasking going on, i.e. Cheez-It nibbling. Because how can we deprive ourselves of the missed opportunity of watching the 5 o'clock shadow (Chlo Bennet) dig herself out of the mess created from Sunday's LA Galaxy debacle? Or perhaps we should start a pool on what number one reason will be given for Austin Nichols missing The Walking Dead red carpet season 7 premiere.
Two Possibilities:
* one of the deards ate the Google Map directions to the Hollywood Forever Cemetery where the premiere took place
* the couple lost track of time while filming Instagram Stories and Snapchats
Or MAYBE Austin wasn't in Los Angeles at all on Sunday, the 23rd. That reason might be more like the winning ticket. And if he wasn't in LA attending the Galaxy game & the accompanying Agents of Shield family photo op or The Walking Dead season premiere, what occasion would have been powerful enough to draw him away from both events? How about Jake's opening performance of "Sunday In The Park With George" in New York City. That would be just the right lure for Austin's heartstrings.
But we'll let Chlo tell everyone on Sunday night what the real reason was. *wink*
And even though Mr. Nichols is scheduled to participate in this weekend's Walker Stalker convention in Atlanta, might he return to Los Angeles in time to join his partner in crime in Talking Dead stories?
After all, he may have some of his own explaining to do, in order to distract from that Family Tile sighting near his Michigan birthplace on Tuesday October 25th.

^^^ Interesting, isn't it? When you first look at that tweet, you kind of chuckle and think 'Of course not, but that's kind of funny.'
But it caught my eye right away because until Jake shaved for his role in Prisoners, one of the words used to describe him in tweets was Amish looking, I kid you not. That's how out of control his beard was at times. I would not be surprised at all if this girl really had seen Jake. And the brood. I know we say sometimes that there's no way Jake and/or Austin are going to walk side by side on a public side walk with their kids but who knows in this case. Maybe the nanny(ies) was along as well and they were going to split up once on the plane, I don't know how they do it.
We're not going to know until maybe there's a book on their lives someday 25 yrs from now. Maybe we'll never know how they did it.
But I don't dismiss stuff like this when I see it. Not anymore.

And so he was cast, in 2010, as a floppy-fringed, pumped-up, fake-tanned beefcake hero, the star of Disney’s $200 million wannabe action franchise Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time. The film was a critical disaster (“Mush,” said The New York Times) and a box-office disappointment. He followed it with another blatantly commercial project, this time in suave, populist, Cary Grant mode, as a Viagra salesman in the romantic “dramedy” Love & Other Drugs. That was a shocker too. I met Gyllenhaal on that film’s promotional trail, in late 2010, and he was miserable. We had a tense interview during which he tried to make it sound interesting, and I tried, not very enthusiastically, to agree.
ReplyDeleteHe says today that he eventually reached breaking point. “I didn’t want to do another interview where I had to talk about a film that I didn’t truly love. I had veered from who I am, as a person. I got sucked up into that machine. I had lost my way.” The solution presented itself, gradually, over the next year. He moved from LA to New York, forced himself to be bold and regard himself as “an artist”, did a film that he loved (End of Watch), and took some professional advice from the most powerful man on the planet.
About this time, Gyllenhaal was in Washington and asked about a tour of the White House. “I get a phone call saying that I should come, and probably wear a suit. I got an inkling that I wasn’t going to get just the normal tour.” He says that the meeting with President Obama in the Oval Office was short, but overwhelming, and that during their exchange the president said: “Your job as entertainers is to provide entertainment and, given the tough times that we live in, to create art that says something.” As if by magic, the films that Gyllenhaal has done since have easily lived up to that presidential remit.

Following Sunday's new episode of The Walking Dead, Chris Hardwick will have a full couch to recap the latest hour of the show on Talking Dead.
ReplyDeleteHardwick will be joined by Ezekiel actor Khary Payton, Agents of SHIELD's Chloe Bennet, and comedian Dana Gould. Payton will make his debut on The Walking Dead on Sunday night after the first look as his portrayal of Ezekiel coming in the San Diego Comic Con trailer for the show's seventh season back in July.
Bennet joins the show after years of being a huge fan. Currently, she plays Daisy Johnson on ABC's Agents of SHIELD but has ties to The Walking Dead outside of the fandom. Bennet has been dating The Walking Dead's Spencer Monroe actor Austin Nichols for a couple of years.
Gould is a producer of The Simpsons. Coming up, Gould is executive producinga new series headed to IFC called Stan Against Evil. Gould is also an accomplished stand up comedian.
Talking Dead will be less of a therapy session this week than it was seven days ago. The Season 7 premiere saw the brutal sendoff for two core characters from Alexandria. Episode 2, titled, "The Well," will introduce a new, friendly, and much brighter community to the mix. In fact, showrunner Scott Gimple claims the episode will be "funny."
Payton will have much to discuss as his Ezekiel and Ezekiel's jungle cat Shiva are introduced to the AMC series. That's right, there will be a tiger on The Walking Dead, starting with tonight's new episode.
