At the Cannes Film Festival in May, Harvey Weinstein vowed to get Jake Gyllenhaal an Oscar nomination for Antoine Fuqua’s boxing drama “Southpaw” after the actor was shockingly passed over for a nod in last year’s “Nightcrawler.” It appears that wasn’t just lip service: The Weinstein Company announced Thursday that the film will be re-released on more than 300 screens tomorrow, Oct. 2.

“Monday is Jake Gyllenhaal day,” joked an insider who said the actor and production company Bold Films have invited movie execs to meet and pitch.

Jake Gyllenhaal, Paul Dano, Kelly Macdonald and Bill Nighy are poised to join Tilda Swinton in “Okja,” a multilingual monster movie from “Snowpiercer” director Bong Joon-ho, multiple individuals familiar with the project have told TheWrap.
ReplyDeleteDetails surrounding the project remain vague, but it is said to feature a Korean female lead and a host of English-language supporting actors whose scenes will be set in New York. Lewis Pictures is producing “Okja,” which is expected to start production early next year.
Swinton has already confirmed her involvement in the project while the other actors are in various stages of discussions, and though official offers have not gone out yet, they’re expected to shortly. Representatives for Gyllenhaal and Dano did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
Director Bong recruited a top-notch English-language cast for his hit film “Snowpiercer” including Swinton, Chris Evans, Jamie Bell, Octavia Spencer, Ed Harris, Alison Pill and John Hurt. “Snowpiercer” grossed $82 million overseas and countless more millions on VOD domestically. The South Korean filmmaker’s previous movies include the serial killer procedural “Memories of Murder,” the crime drama “Mother” and the critically acclaimed monster movie “The Host.”
Gyllenhaal is coming off an impressive run that includes “Nightcrawler,” “Prisoners,” “Southpaw” and the upcoming Fox Searchlight release “Demolition,” which opened the Toronto International Film Festival. He can currently be seen in “Everest” and will soon begin filming Tom Ford‘s “Nocturnal Animals.” He’s also attached to star in “The Current War,” the Boston Marathon bombing movie “Stronger” and Antoine Fuqua‘s drug drama “The Man Who Made It Snow.” He’s represented by WME, which also reps director Bong.

ReplyDeleteEG: The short version is: I would work again with Jake in a New York minute. Jake is a wonderful person — kind, gracious, bright, warm and dear. (I'm making him sound like a Boy Scout, but it's true.) A truly great actor and acting partner. He was game to go to the depths of emotion one minute, really passionate — allowing himself through his character to be intimate and open, pouring out his heart or allowing me to pour out mine, to be able to be naked and unafraid, for I knew that he would catch me, and he did — for he knew how scared I was. And, of course, I would catch him.
He's very responsive and open as an actor and intuitive, going to hard places — the uncomfortable places where real emotion lies — and then in the next beat, he will allow himself to just be silly and enjoy playing the fun of Little Shop. To sing with him was a true — there's that word again — delight. He met me with all the passion and beauty of song. At the end of "Seymour" I was spent — a song that is difficult for me, for in the lyrics I confess that, "Nobody ever treated me kindly." The frightening reality of being vulnerable, opening up, letting go, and giving in and trusting. "Please understand it's still strange and frightening for losers like I've been, it's so hard to say…" Today the word "loser" is used as a punchline, a put down, but the feeling down on oneself, having a low self esteem — the reality of feeling that word — well, it hurts and drains you causing a helplessness, as if there is a bottomless black hole. Well, during the matinee, I just lost myself in that well of helplessness, sadness and emptiness.
I felt like I was hearing that lyric in such a new way, opening up a wound so old and deep. I lost myself in the echo of loneliness, and I did not come in with the next "Suddenly Seymour," but Jake came in with his entrance. He rescued me out of my and Audrey's reverie through his compassion, empathy and dearness that he so kindly gave me and showered on me. He helped me to get through that rendition of a very emotional song, and I was grateful.
It seems actually simple — this land of Little Shop — but to get it just right you have to play the truth in the moment and in the character and at the very same time live in this land never forgetting the sweet and dear humor. Jake did just that. When I first started playing the scenes with him, I looked up at him and said, for I realized, "My gosh…we have chemistry! Who knew?" But we did, and I loved working with him, and I told him so many times.
To be honest, I am not always fun to work with, for I was brought up at the Public Theater, mentored by Joe Papp, and I take the work very seriously. Before Little Shop, most of my work was dramatic, and if there was humor, as in In the Boom Boom Room or Teeth and Smiles, it was kind of a wry humor, not like Audrey's in Little Shop. My favorite time is always during rehearsal, and for Howard and Alan's sake, I wanted everything to be the best it could be and not disappoint anyone. Jake was kind and understood that, and he worked so hard and gave me himself totally and all his talent. And for that and his generous and kind nature towards me, I am humbly thankful. I told him that Howard would have loved him. I know Alan did — so did the audience.
During the short rehearsal period and four performances, Jake and I found so many new moments that were never there before in any of the productions that I had done — funny moments that I had never seen before and also new ones that were moving and touching. There was also this rawness that was new and a raw sexuality that came through our characters that was unexpected, but exciting. Jake's Seymour never knew love before...or I guess anything physical (which of course, she did, but also she was never respected or even liked…just a play-thing). Although I always loved how she saw the good in everyone — I guess to a fault. You can't fake authenticity or real, genuine or true kindness to an audience. It is not often that you are gifted with a fellow acting partner who gets you, gets the work and music, can wail, gets the humor and the pathos.

I hope we get to realize Little Shop in a full production, for I would so love to further work with him in that land again, or any other projects for that matter. It was that wonderful to work with him. He is that good of an acting partner…and a whole lot of fun!

Why Austin: When Austin Nichols graduated from McCallum High School, he was gung-ho for UT. But when a manager persuaded him to move to Hollywood, he ate his enrollment fee and headed to the University of Southern California instead. Since then, Nichols—who starred in the beloved teen drama One Tree Hill before bumping up to the adults’ table on Ray Donovan and now The Walking Dead, as the cagey Spencer Monroe—has created his own Texas community out West. He gathers with other Texan ex-pats to watch UT games on TV, and while he continues to divide his time between LA and Austin, it’s still Texas that holds his heart. Here it’s just a hustle between JuiceLand, Tacodeli, and Barton Springs.
What’s Next: Inspired by his hometown, Nichols shot his first short film, Stroker, a 2014 Austin Film Festival entrant, in town using a local crew, and he hopes to direct future projects here. But first keep an eye on him on The Walking Dead, which returns for season six on AMC on October 11, and don’t be surprised if you see Nostradamus, a short that Nichols starred in about a military drone program, in the next Oscar competition.
Dream Projects: Nichols is shopping around a dark comedy pilot about a 1980s game-show host that he cooked up with his writing partner. As busy as he is, though, Nichols would love to do something with local heroes Robert Rodriguez and Richard Linklater in the future. “I would die to work with those guys, but I want to meet them organically,” he says. "It’s hard not to be seriously impressed by Orphan Black’s Tatiana Maslany. The show has a complex structure with the clones, but sometimes we forget that the Canadian actress is playing all of these characters. Whether it’s Helena, Sarah, Cosima, Alison, Rachel or even Beth – she sets these characters a part and gives them real personality.

“Everybody wants me so badly to want an Emmy nomination. I just want to work on a cool movie with Paul Thomas Anderson, or I want to work with a cool actor like Jake Gyllenhaal. That means something to me” she said.

chloebennet: In advance I apologize for shitty grammar and spelling and general "A.D.D.-ness" about to happen in this post. Ten years ago my mom started a medical clinic in the mountains of the Dominican Republic. The initial goal was to bring basic mental and physical health care to those who desperately needed it. The first team consisted of my mom, dad, baby 13 year old me, and a small group of doctors...(crazy I know, cause of the whole part where I was a child and also not a doctor). Anywayyyy. What started out as a few doctors simply trying to help other people, ended up growing into multiple medical clinics throughout the DR and Haiti. Thousands of lives have been saved, some simply by receiving medicine as basic as Benadryl, and some by having access to surgeries they otherwise would never have been able to afford!

They are the real superheroes. They are the ones who should be walking down red carpets and have people screaming their names. The world is so confusing sometimes. This stunning little lady pictured is just one of the thousands of people @afhbenefit has treated, she's also the most beautiful human I have ever seen agh!! So yes guys, As you can see this organization is incredibly near and dear to my heart. I have been a little angry at Matt Damon recently for saying it was not a good idea for Gay male actors to come out of the closet because it takes away the mystery. He tried to wiggle out of it on the Ellen show but he meant what he said. I do not think it was a hateful remark but stupid. Saying that I still had to go see The Martian in 3D. It was awesome. The rescue was kind of crazy but the effects were awesome. I sware it felt like you were on Mars with Matt. It was a lot of fun. I may go back and see Everest in 3D :-)
