“Tom is fit to be tied,” one “insider” supposedly told the weekly scandal sheet. “He is upset when fabricated stories about him are published as if they were the truth.”
Two years ago, when Cruise and Holmes broke up, the headlines on the Enquirer front page trumpeted, “Inside Tom’s House of Horrors! The Abuse. Punishments. Humiliation.” It turned out to be the tab’s best-selling cover of 2012.
Back then, Fields immediately released a letter saying he would sue over the “disgraceful and lurid” story. “Mr. Cruise is certainly not a ‘monster.’ He is a caring father, a hardworking actor and, above all, an honest, decent man.”

But Fields had nothing to say Friday when I contacted his office about the Enquirer story. It could be a fatigue factor, after so many years of battling the rumor-mongers. Or maybe Cruise is starting to realize that very few people care whom he sleeps with. If he’s in a good movie, we’ll go see it.

This time, he’s taken to Instagram to take on Gawker, who published an article that claims Franco has been living with a man – his friend and co-star, Scott Haze.
“But theirs is the kind of relationship - somewhat ambiguous, seemingly gay, probably romantic - that almost always sends The New York Times into a bizarre moral panic,” it read.
So he posted a screenshot of the headline alongside the caption: “GAWKER - always getting the cutting edge, homophobic scoop!!! Go see CHILD OF GOD in theaters and see me direct my live-in boyfriend, SCOTT HAZE!!! Love you SCOTT!!!!”
Gawker penned the salacious piece after reading an interview with Franco published in the New York Times. It was scheduled as part of his promotional duties for his new film, Child of God, and he conducted it alongside Haze during a night out with the journalist Jacob Bernstein.
"Mr. Haze and Mr. Franco met about a decade ago when they were acting students in Los Angeles," Bernstein wrote. "They are now so close that describing them merely as friends would be a disservice.
"Now, it was 12:30 a.m. and Mr. Franco was clearly fading," it concluded. "An assistant pointed him and Mr. Haze to two waiting town cars. Mr. Franco expressed surprise, since they needed only one. 'We live in the same place,' he said."
"I don't even care if people think I'm gay, so it was like, 'Awesome!'" Franco told The Daily Beast in an interview last year. "I mean, I wish I was… I wish I was gay."
