How To Spot Publicity Whores?

Caught in the Act!

How Hollywood's bold-faced names secretly steer the celebrity news machine.

Excerpts from The Wall Street Journal article, March 4, 2006:

A delicate new game is under way between the stars and the vast gossip industry of TV shows, magazines and Web sites that feeds upon them.

It has always been a relationship built upon animosity and mutual need. But tensions have grown with the explosion of media running paparazzi photos of stars canoodling or emerging from coffee shops in frumpy track suits.

Now many stars including Gwyneth Paltrow, Angelina Jolie and Jessica Simpson are fighting back. They are hiring their own photographers to capture supposedly private rendezvous, tipping off reporters to their whereabouts and developing relationships of mutual back-scratching with magazine editors.

The result is the flowering of a genre: fake paparazzi journalism, or the staging of "unstaged" moments. It is an art form that benefits both stars and the press. Stars get to participate in the framing of their image and magazines appear to give readers a glimpse of the real celebrity untouched by public-relations varnish.

When Ms. Paltrow gave birth in 2004, she knew there would be a high bounty on the first photo of her newborn daughter. A staple of the celebrity press, the actress and her husband, Chris Martin, leader of the band Coldplay, decided to take matters into their own hands and tip off a photographer they knew, Steve Sands.

Mr. Sands took what appeared to be surprise shots of the two emerging from the hospital in London with the baby and sold them to People for $125,000, according to a person familiar with the arrangement. Larry Hackett, managing editor of People, says he knew that Mr. Sands had been tipped off by Ms. Paltrow. But he didn't see the need to inform readers about it. "I just don't know how illuminating it is," he says. Stephen Huvane, a publicist at public-relations firm PMK/HBH who handles Ms. Paltrow, confirms Mr. Sands's account. "You'll see a lot more of that happening," says Mr. Huvane.

The magazines are lucrative. US Weekly sells a million copies a week on the newsstand at $3.49 apiece. The magazine turns an operating profit of $50 million a year, says a person familiar with its accounts.

Network TV programs like Access Hollywood, cable channels like E! Entertainment Television Inc. and Web sites have added to the coverage. All these outlets compete for photos documenting the daily lives of a small cast of celebrities. These stars, in turn, seek to control their images without appearing to, because doing so would ruin their mystique.

"All those dirty little secrets in Hollywood include tipping paparazzi off and playing games with them," says New York-based public-relations professional Ken Sunshine, whose clients include corporations and stars such as Ben Affleck and Leonardo DiCaprio. He says people might find that "unethical" if they knew about it, "but unfortunately it seems to be an accepted part of the business."

Magazines have generally played along. In 2003, Ms. Jolie tipped off US Weekly that she would appear in a park one afternoon with her adopted son, Maddox, according to two people familiar with the situation. The actress had recently divorced actor Billy Bob Thornton, a relationship which was portrayed as reckless and bizarre. These two people say US Weekly knew Ms. Jolie had green-lighted the photo, which softened her image by showing her maternal side.

The photographers' onslaught has put stars in a tough spot. If they ignore the magazines, they let such pictures define their public image. But sitting down for formulaic interviews and staged publicity shots won't necessarily satisfy the magazines' lust for juicy stories.

The answer is manipulation so subtle it's hard to say if there's any manipulation at all. In January, when rumors swirled in the press that Ms. Jolie might be pregnant with the child of actor Brad Pitt, Ms. Jolie arranged for an employee of the charity Yéle Haiti to take a picture of her with her growing belly.

Ms. Jolie then let Yéle Haiti sell the picture to People, according to Mr. Hackett, the magazine's managing editor, and a representative for Mr. Pitt. A person familiar with the situation says People paid $400,000 for the picture. It appeared on the cover of the magazine with the headline: "Angelina Reveals: 'Yes, I'm Pregnant.' "

By arranging the Haiti photo, Ms. Jolie reaped several benefits. She ensured the picture was flattering. In diverting the money to charity, she put a twist on a tactic used by celebrities in recent years in which they arrange to be paid for wedding or baby photos with the proceeds going to charity. And Ms. Jolie reminded fans of her devotion to humanitarian causes. She had taken a hit months earlier when she struck up a relationship with Mr. Pitt shortly after his marriage to actress Jennifer Aniston broke up.

In many cases, stars don't need to try that hard. When celebrities pick a location like the terrace at the Ivy restaurant in Beverly Hills, they know they're liable to appear in the glossies the next week. A bank of photographers regularly sits on the other side of the street with long-range lenses. Actor Tom Cruise was thus captured on film last year when he roared up to the Ivy on his motorcycle accompanied by then-new girlfriend Katie Holmes.

"I would probably say at least 50% of what you see in terms of Hollywood coverage is something that was not necessarily born organically," says Janice Min, editor in chief of US Weekly. "This is a totally symbiotic relationship. This is how celebrities survive."

Thanks guys for sticking up for me, whoever you are ;)

When I first found OMG I was swept away by the giddiness that was this idea of J&A and lots of stuff sounded plausible until I started looking deeper and questions started to form. I've only been back twice for a quick catch up but haven't posted there since their 'warm welcome'. So if that is showing my true colours, I'm happy to do so. :)

That's what I keep telling myself now too ;)

Nev, you are reading old comments so you know that for a long time OMG and WFT2 posters were on the same page.

Unfortunately, it turned out that OMGers aren't interested in what's really going on with Jake and Austin, they are interested in "proving" that Jake and Austin are a couple with kids - even when that includes posting obvious lies and ignoring obvious facts.

Nev said...

That's right. I first stumbled upon OMG and checked out the link to WFT2 (kept it for later..waaaay too many comments to read ;) ). After having read and entered the uhm...discussion I kinda left it at that and thought I'd better check out WFT2 (and if I remember correctly, PG told me to read the old comments here...hmmm)

So, now I'm at Aug 2010... and although there is still stuff I just shake my head at, most is thoroughly entertaining and educating. I've never known so much about HW..it's great! :D

If OMG want to call me out on something..go right ahead. I've nothing to hide. I don't believe in J&A (after my initial excitement) and no way is there a BT....

Anonymous said...

If OMG want to call me out on something..go right ahead. I've nothing to hide.

OMG will trash you, make fun of you, ignore you ... but never ever really discuss your opinion.

They never answer direct questions nor explain why they believe what they believe. OMG posters are dishonest, pathetic people working extra hard to sound clever and superior.

posting said...

Isn't it possible to leave up more of the posts?

It's impossible to follow a discussion here when half the arguments are constantly being deleted. I understand that some might have been double posts etc. but it's better for later visitors to see that than wonder what it was! It feels like some posters are being deleted on principle - and I for one would rather struggle through some "troll" posts than feel differing opinions are being censored (I realize that may not be the case but the constant deletions give that impression).

Nev said...

I just came across this comment and thought it well put: (this was in the midst of another MAJOR BT/or no BT war)

Anonymous said...
I don't believe in BT. I have no problem with people who believe in BT. What pisses me off is that BT believers are believers, not people who use their own heads to make their own conclusions, they believe because Ted said so, don't question anything and ignore everything that doesn't fit.

"LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOLLLLLL" is not an argument.

Only troll posts are deleted.

Anonymous said...

What pisses me off is that BT believers are believers, not people who use their own heads to make their own conclusions

Exactly.
+ BT believers ignore, deny and lie about facts ("Austin in New York" and "Jake in Texas", for example) in order to support BT fiction.

posting said...

@Jackie.
I appreciate that some moderation is necessary (e.g. personal attacks) and that certain posts may not even be worth reading - but that is also kind of the point. Later visitors don't know whether a post simply said LOOOL or was an actual post being censored. I would much rather scroll past the "LOOOOL/ troll posts" (and maybe even get a laugh out of some of them) than wonder what I missed/ wasn't allowed to see!

Anyway, it was just a request / personal opinion. For me, when so many posts say "deleted by administrator" it spoil the fun a bit.

In Defense of Jake Gyllenhaal

^^^

By Simi Lampert

Part of being a journalist is correcting the injustices in this world, and I’m here to do just that for someone who’s been needlessly and heedlessly mistreated for so long that he has become nearly forgotten. I’m talking, of course, about Jake Gyllenhaal.
The puppy-eyed actor, so fabulously crushable as recently as two years ago in “Love and Other Drugs,” has been recently overshadowed by men like Ryan Gosling and Joseph Gordon Levitt in everything from chick flick roles to the part of my own heart devoted to actor crushes. Is this fair? No. Are these men any greater than the ever-adorable Gyllenhaal? Gosling may have sharper abs (okay, he definitely has sharper abs) and Gordon Levitt may have a permanent and irresistible twinkle in his eyes, but does that negate the deep blue of Gyllenhaal’s eyes? It does not.
Gyllenhaal not only has the major qualifications of leading men — charm and the ability to look good with his shirt off — but he has those secondary characteristics as well. He has acting range (I’ve never seen Brokeback Mountain but I would imagine the skills needed for that were quite different than those in Donnie Darko, or that ridiculously hilarious stoner movie, Bubble Boy) and he can, apparently, even transfer those skills to the stage.
Today, Gyllenhaal is starring not only in new action movie “End of Watch,” (which started September 21) but is also premiering on Broadway in the new play, “If There Is I Haven’t Found It Yet” (opened September 20).
So let’s bring the spotlight back to a man who deserves it. Let the teenage girls of America once again hang posters of this glorious male upon their bedroom walls. Let him return to his former state of objectification. And let such important discussions of his facial hair as that mentioned here get greater acclaim than they have until now.

Rupert Everett: Gay Marriage is 'Beyond Tragic', Having Babies is 'Absolutely Hideous'

^^^

Rupert Everett clarifies his recent remarks about gay dads to Decca Aitkenhead at the Guardian:

"For me, being gay was about wanting to do the opposite of the straight world, so I think that's where my problems in this particular area come from. For me, personally, the last thing I would like in the entire world would be to go through cocktailing my sperm with my boyfriend and finding some grim couple in Ohio who are gluten-free and who you pay $75,000 to have your baby. To me it feels absolutely hideous. But that's me, just me. I'm not having a go at gay couples who do. I think if Elton and David want to have babies, that's wonderful. I think we should all do what we want. Isn't there a middle way, where you can just say, 'Not for me, but it doesn't matter'? But no, everything's sort of turned into al-Qaida. I'm sure I'm going to be nail-bombed. David Furnish is probably going to send Patrick Cox with a bomb and blow up the theatre."

Everett adds, on marriage:

"Why do queens want to go and get married in churches? Obviously this crusty old pathetic, Anglican church – the most joke-ish church of all jokey churches – of course they don't want to have queens getting married. It's kind of understandable that they don't; they're crusty old calcified freaks. But why do we want to get married in churches? I don't understand that, myself, personally. I loathe heterosexual weddings; I would never go to a wedding in my life. I loathe the flowers, I loathe the fucking wedding dress, the little bridal tiara. It's grotesque. It's just hideous. The wedding cake, the party, the champagne, the inevitable divorce two years later. It's just a waste of time in the heterosexual world, and in the homosexual world I find it personally beyond tragic that we want to ape this institution that is so clearly a disaster."

Anonymous said...

a) guy is cute

Yes, he is and his beard is cute too! Jake, please shave!

Anonymous said...

Isn't there a middle way, where you can just say, 'Not for me, but it doesn't matter'?

Yes, there is.

So, dear Rupert, why didn't you took it, why did you trash gays as unfit parents?

Anonymous said...

I find it personally beyond tragic that we want to ape this institution that is so clearly a disaster.

Yes, marriage sucks and people are miserable, but most people aren't privileged like you, and to them things like spouse's health plan are really important.

The Global Festival is a massive advocacy event taking place in New York this September, as world leaders gather for this year’s UN General Assembly. Scheduled performers include Neil Young with Crazy Horse, Foo Fighters, The Black Keys, Band of Horses and K'Naan.

The Festival will bring 60,000 change makers to Central Park to celebrate progress made fighting extreme poverty, and to urge world leaders and fellow citizens to do more. It will showcase a generation taking action to end extreme poverty and share inspiring stories of progress, demonstrating how investments in things like vaccines can transform children's lives, and bring us to the brink of huge wins like the complete eradication of polio.

BREAKING: CA Governor Brown Signs Bill Banning Reparative Therapy Into Law

^^^

On Saturday, Gov. Jerry Brown of California signed Senate Bill 1172, which officially bans so-called “ex-gay” therapy for minors.
Sponsored by Sen. Ted Lieu, D-Torrance (Los Angeles County), the measure will bar mental-health providers from providing treatment that seeks to change gender expression, or eliminate sexual or romantic same-sex attractions in persons under 18. If a therapist violates the law, which goes into effect January 1, 2013, they will face disciplinary action from whatever organization licenses them.
“This bill bans non-scientific ‘therapies’ that have driven young people to depression and suicide,” Brown told the San Francisco Chronicle. “These practices have no basis in science or medicine and they will now be relegated to the dustbin of quackery.”
Reparative therapy—an umbrella term for various methods that often incorporate prayer or designate a childhood incident as a “root” for homosexuality—have been soundly condemned by the World Health Organization, the American Psychological Association and almost every other professional therapeutic group in America. (Adults can still seek such treatment, but do so with informed consent, not as the helpless victims of their parents or guardians)
“Governor Brown has reaffirmed what medical and mental health organizations have made clear: Efforts to change minors’ sexual orientation are not therapy, they are the relics of prejudice and abuse that have inflicted untold harm on young lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender Californians,” said Clarissa Filgioun, Equality California board president.
It’s a great day for Californians, but the damaging practice of “praying away the gay” is still legal in 49 other states and across the globe: “This isn’t just a problem in California or even only the United States,” says Andre Banks of International LGBT rights group AllOut.org. “American religious extremists are bringing these dangerous practices to more than 30 countries all over the world, despite their overwhelming rejection by the medical community.”

Tumblr review of If There Is...

Phew..

^^^

Nick Payne dares to ask the most important of all theatrical questions: is there a point to this play? Well, If There Is I Haven’t Found It Yet! Get it?

Three great actors and Jake Gyllenhaal (who can be solid with the right direction) are given nothing to work with in a flimsy, detached script that’s been directed in a hyper-stylized fashion that does nothing to elevate the source material except alienate everyone in the audience from being able to connect with it. At 90 minutes, this play about family, climate change, obesity, bullying, funny uncles, quizzical set-design, and the the self-destruct nature of mankind, feels about 60 minutes too long. The scenes between Terry (Jake Gyllenhaal) and Anna (Annie Funke) are the only moments when the play ever engages and pulls us is. But at $100 a pop, it’s just not enough.

I do think there is too much criticism of art. I’m not a critic. I don’t want to be a critic. I want to love things. And Nick Payne has a strong track record. And these actors are all capable and talented. And I am sure they are all very nice people. But when a friend offered me a free ticket to Wednesday’s matinee, I turned it down. This is just not the kind of show you need to see twice. Or, you know, ever.

I've mentioned several times now that I'm catching up on WFT2 and I'm now at Nov 2010.. the season of Jaylor and LAOD promo..and for quite some time now whatever I'm reading about from the past is linked to stuff happening now...like Swift's stupid song(s) or Anne getting married (you were all saying how stupid her boyfriend looks etc. It's amazing.

As you were.

Anonymous said...

Congrats to Anne on her marriage.

I saw the previews for Les Miz and she is outstanding in it - her voice is amazing - she not only sings well but there's something heartbreaking about her voice. I kept thinking how she and Hugh Jackman sang together at the Oscars. Who knew? It looks beautiful.

Uh, no.. :( I don't. And the first image in my head upon reading the words 'failed hero'? was PoP. :s I'm not saying Dastan was a failed hero (not at all) but that was the first reaction.

No, I think I'd really, really want him to go down the Time to Dance route... mmmmm

Btw... I've just come across one of the LAOD promo interviews in which Jake goes on and on about how he is dedicated to his characters and films blabla which means he practices an practices... and did anyone else think: BBM, Jake? How much practice did that take? ;)

I don't, no. :( I think I'm thinking more Time to Dance... A kind of sinister, almost two-faced, cold blooded kind of guy... I thought the contrast between everyday stuff by day (dinner/gym etc) and the murders at night were in stark contrast in the video. And wow..those cold, empty eyes.. *shudders*

Anonymous said...

^^I wonder what his character(s) in The Enemy will be like.

We were blow away by EoW. I truly almost didn't recognize Jake, as he disappeared in this character. I loved the relationship between Jake's character and Anna's; and Jake and Michael Pena were superb together. Michael is really attractive. And Yahira Garcia was stunning.

Don't know..just feels like something he'd be amazing in (see Time to Dance). His looks and Good-Guy image almost scream for a role that uses that but has a dark side.

I'm not after a slasher or Saw type role, no sire. I mean something dark, that messes with the viewer maybe. Not the in-your-face villains, more subtle, mental..

Oh I don't know. Does any of that make sense? :(

I understand if Jake wants that challenge, that test, but I don't watch movies to be impressed by anyone's acting skills per se, I look for good stories and characters I will care about.

Made sense to me ☺ And I agree. Would like to see him take on that kind of thing too. I’m thinking there might be a bit of that kind of “darkness” in an Enemy – though I have nothing really to base that assumption on! Guess we’ll wait and see.

posting said...

LOL at the Tay/Tay link.
I have to admit her new single Begin Again is starting to grow on me. I think it’s kind of sweet and catchy. Can’t quite figure out which guy (if any) is supposed to be Jake though – obviously I want him to be the nice one who pulls out chairs, laughs like a little kid and discusses Christmas movies, but I guess he’s more likely the “bad ex”, as seems to be the majority opinion.

Nev said...

Er..yeah. Me too, but I also kind of want to be impressed by the acting. I like when the actor disappears in the character. I don't pick movies for that reason but because I'm interested in the story (and yes, more often than not, the actors/actresses in it ;p)

@posting

Haven't heard her latest uh masterpiece yet but considering how much she bitched about Jake in WANEEGBT how could the new song be about Jake? Hmmm..

posting said...

@New.
Well just because there’s a “break-up” song doesn’t necessarily mean the album can’t also include one about the first dates – but I guess it is more likely that Jake is the “HE” being referred to (i.e. an ex who didn’t find her funny!).
The song includes 2 guys and is basically about moving on and dating again after 8 months of heartache. People are speculating it’s either about moving on from John Mayer with Jake (in which case he’s the nice date) or moving on from Jake with some other guy (can’t remember his name) – which is apparently most likely as people are mentioning some clues about her dress and stuff I don’t know about because I haven’t followed her… I just go by majority opinion.

Hitflix - 2013 Best Picture Oscar Contenders

^^^

'End of Watch'
Pro: A surprise hit at the box office, stars Jake Gyllenhaal and Michael Pena received rave reviews for their performances in LAPD drama. The picture also received impressive reviews from noted critics such as Andrew O’Hehir, Roger Ebert, Lisa Schwarzbaum, David Denby and Manhola Dargis. If it can become a staple of year-end top 10 lists and the studio can get a screener out to members earlier enough, it has a shot.

Con: “Watch” will need major support from distributor Open Road Films to even fashion legitimate campaigns for Gyllenhaal and Pena, let alone a best picture run. It’s not clear if that level of commitment to play the awards season game is in the young distribution company’s plans.

Apparently Jake's confirmed to star in Prisoner

^^^

A couple of weeks ago we told you that Jake Gyllenhaal was close to signing on for a role in Prisoners, and now the official word has come. Read on for all of the latest details, and look for more soon!

From the Press Release
Jake Gyllenhaal will join Hugh Jackman in the gripping thriller PRISONERS to be directed by Denis Villeneuve (Academy Award-nominated Incendies) it was announced by Alcon Co-Founders and Co-CEOs Broderick Johnson and Andrew Kosove.

Written by Aaron Guzikowski (Contraband), the story revolves around a small-town carpenter named Keller (Jackman) whose young daughter and her best friend are kidnapped. After the cops fail to find them, Keller takes the law into his own hands but in the process runs up against Detective Loki (Gyllenhaal), a hotshot cop with confidence to burn, assigned to the case.

Kosove and Johnson are producing, along with 8:38 Productions’ Kira Davis and Madhouse Entertainment’s Adam Kolbrenner. Ed McDonnell and John Stark will executive produce.

Production is scheduled to begin in early 2013. Alcon is targeting a fall 2013 release through its output deal with Warner Bros.

Everything About It’s Wrong: Stephen Gyllenhaal on Grassroots

Was there any doubt they would go into the business?

Oh, I never thought for a second they would. It was never anything I thought of. We just didn’t think about that. They were kids. They were doing whatever they were doing. I didn’t understand that they were absorbing everything that was going on and it’s amazing to see how much they took in, but there was never any idea that they should do anything but what they wanted to do. Never for a moment. There wasn’t really even time to consider, “Well, are you going to become a doctor?” because they were so young when they started acting and then it just took off.

Have you seen End of Watch yet?

Oh yeah, I saw it. I’m actually in New York right now. I just saw Jake’s play as well. Yeah, I saw End of Watch. It’s terrific and he’s great in this play. I don't know how it happened but my kids are very talented.
