Obama: The First Gay President

It was the spring of 2007, back when Barack Obama’s bid for the presidency seemed quixotic at best. I’d seen Obama speak to a crowd and was impressed but wanted to see if what I’d seen from afar held up under closer scrutiny. So I asked to attend a private fundraiser in a tony apartment in Georgetown. I promised not to write anything. I just wanted to see the man up close and get a better sense of him and his character. At one point in the question-and-answer session, a woman looked him square in the eyes with what can only be called maternal grit. “My son is gay,” she said, and the room went suddenly quiet. “I don’t understand why you don’t support his right to marry the person he loves. It’s so disappointing to me.” Obama, without losing eye contact for a second, told her: “I want full equality for your son - all the rights and benefits that marriage brings. I really do. But the word ‘marriage’ stirs up so much religious feeling. I think civil unions are the way to go. As long as they are equal.”

My heart sank. Was this obviously humane African-American actually advocating a “separate but equal” solution - a form of marital segregation like the one that made his own parents’ marriage a felony in many states when he was born? The sudden equivocation made no sense - except as pure political calculation. And yet it also felt strained, as if he knew it didn’t quite fit. He wanted equality but not marriage - but you cannot have one without the other. On this issue, Obama’s excruciating nonposition was essentially “Yes we can’t.”

And yet somehow, simply by the way he answered that mother’s question, I didn’t believe it. I thought he was struggling between political calculation and his core belief in civil rights. And it was then that I realized he was both: a cold, steely, ruthless, calculating politician who nonetheless wanted to do the right thing in the end.

Last week he did it — in a move whose consequences are simply impossible to judge.

Jake doesn't have a company of production

Wrong again.

From his bio: "Jake Gyllenhaal has a production company called Nine Stories."

What we’re learning about Jake Gyllenhaal’s stay in Toronto is truly unremarkable, but it is no less fascinating because, um, it’s Jake G. Last night, Gyllenhaal sat down to eat at Playa Cabana in the Annex, which he may have arrived at via TTC, because, that’s right, the man uses the same mode of transportation many use to get to work in the morning. Gyllenhaal has been filming An Enemy since early May, and was last spotted shooting around 130 Adelaide St. W. in the Financial District.

So, today, on set; one moment we're watching Jake Gyllenhall charming fans, the next?
BOOM!!!bangboomBOOM!!!

Serious three-car collision, less than a block away. Thankfully, nobody was killed.

This should reinforce the lesson that you NEVER know when you're going to need first aid and CPR training - and that ALL of you should be trained NOW.

What if the only trained personnel around were injured? What would you do?

Look around at your nearest loved one. What if they
passed out and had no pulse.

Please - even if it's not through my firm, GO GET TRAINED. www.rescueone.ca

do you provide 1st aid to movie sets?

Most of them have set medics present. That takes care of their liability issues, though I would certainly a) train the crews (the skills never really go away, with minimal practice) and b) supply trained medics to them.

(I was actually there working as an extra today) ...

Sorry you had me at jake gyllenhall!

Nice guy. Spent time talking to some of us - poor guy had to crouch down on the floor of the streetcar when it was being pulled back down York Street, because of all the screaming maniacs. (Seriously, after we had to re-set three times because of it, it got old - poor guy riding the floor, just looked miserable - reminded me why I don't think I'd want his life, awards, money, whatever.)

Nice....I've always liked him and his movies!

Proud?!? Why would anyone make any Brokeback Mountain joke on the movie set???

Anonymous said...

Are you kidding me? BBM is together his greatest fortune and his greatest adversity, nobody will ever forget that he is Jack Twist, BBM jokes will always follow him, read the comments on the video with Bear G. that stupid Blake Shelton, the answer is just one, unfortunately HOMOPHOBIA.

Anonymous said...

Sorry, I'm not talking about stupid people leaving stupid messages on the Internet, so I have to ask again - why on Earth would anyone make any Brokeback Mountain joke on Jake's movie set?

Anonymous said...

One more time homophobia, and people don't stop being stupid when is not on internet , Blake Shelton was in TV.

Anonymous said...

Blake Shelton's joke wasn't homophobic. Joke was stupid, but he was right - Jake did "break up" with Taylor Swift because he's gay.

But working place is not TV show nor anonymous message board.
And I don't expect movie studios to hire idiots to work on their multi-million projects.

Anonymous said...

According to you Jake's character on EOW dies? I have this feeling watching the trailer.

Anonymous said...

I hope not! But that would / could be good for the movie ...

Anonymous said...

I expect even worse from studios, and Blake Shelton is a stupid homophobe as his lame joke, that intended that Taylor is so magnificently special whether to leave hert, you surely have to be gay, the sexual preferences of the people, even if different from yours, don't have to be motive for sneer in a civil world.I am not Jake, and I am serene with my sexual tastes, but its joke has offended me.

Anonymous said...

Yes like in BBM!

Anonymous said...

In general it is true, but when a film is filmed in a place people of the place they are assumed, not only actors or casting directors but carpenters painters, appeared, workers of various kind, and I don't think this type of people belongs to HW, or saves some joke on BBM.

Yeah LOL. Just read all the articles/posts on this very web site about homophobia in Hollywood.

“Although I witnessed a lot of it, whether it be making fun of gays or gay jokes. I just bit my tongue or looked the other way. That was part of the reason that I didn’t come out earlier — because there was an energy on set, and I felt like my being gay would have offset that, especially with the crew.”

The “Glee” star, who is most well known for her role as Coach Sue Sylvester on the Fox musical comedy, has rejected claims that it is difficult to find work in Hollywood if you are gay.

“Look, I've never – as far as I know, it's been behind my back if it has – I've never been turned down for a role because I'm gay,” she told gay entertainment website AfterElton.com. “I don't find Hollywood, in my own experience, to be homophobic.”

HW is guilty of homophobia because it doesn't propose a positive and tolerant model, but rather forces to deny who you are really to the purpose to sell and to earn more, this is homophobia of market.

I have already answered numerous times with the example of WH and other, there is who is happy perhaps to fake to be what is not for money, and there is who as the poor W, it doesn't hold up the pressure the lies the pretense, and they end as her or John Travolta, HW should do it because it is a cultural industry that turns to the young people and the minds weakest, and it has the duty to promulgate messages of tolerance and hope, and there is not anything badly if i earns money in to do it. HW should do it because it draws to the homosexual world to full hands, and because HW arrives in places where to be homosexual is even crime and those persons in that places they look at that films with hope

indeed I don't know whether to say more, perhaps indeed, I am not able of to explain me, or I don't understand the questions,
I try again:
if the studios spend million of dollars in a film as Pirates of the Caribbean, you can be sure that will do anything to get further possible gay rumors, on the protagonists of the film, as has always done, as Disney does with the poor man Z.Efron, forced to be with beards of profession or Robert Pattinson that it has to fake to be with " Bella"or TL, because it is in this way that it works in HW and this, as I have already said, it is homophobia of market. I have read a BI about ZQ that has suffered pressures for not to come out because the sequel of Star Trek, and Chris P is deep in the closet because HW has big projects for him as Luke Evans that treated his declarations about the matter, as the other guy of Batman of which I don't remember the name now. I believe that everything this is wrong and homophobe
a things it is that a scriptwriter or a costume designer it is declared gay, as you say anybody doesn't care. other thing is A great star that coming out and it has the support of HW, this has never happened, and I doubt that will happen soon, because it is a matter of Homophobia.I hope to be explains me, you excuse the precarious English,

That is wrong, but is not homophobic.

Hollywood doesn't pressure actors to stay in the closet because gayness is bad or because they dislike gay people, they do that in order to sell movies worldwide and make profit like any other business firm.

Big closeted Hollywood stars have millions and millions of dollars.
They could live like rich people the rest of their lives without ever making another movie.
They are free to come out.
But they CHOOSE to stay in the closet because money is more important to them than self-respect or gay rights or helping other gay actors.

I call that greed - not homophobia.

They, doesn't choose, they don't have possibility of choice, or in this way or you don't work to HW, And The Homophobia is really in this, in not to give you the possibility to choose.perhaps it is banal, but it is true. money is not everything in the life, and to be able to work at the most of your possibilities and as your talent deserves can be more important, also for a rich movie star.JMO

I'll repeat myself - Hollywood isn't homophobic, but movie going public is. And we are discussing homophobia in Hollywood, not just any homophobia.

I'm sure that big Hollywood star would be able to get work after coming out, but not in big budget action star romantic lead kind of movies.
Why?
Because people who invest their 100.000.000$ in a movie want that money back and want to make profit,
not because they are homophobic.

There should be special rules for movie business? Or all art business? Or just Hollywood movie business?
Would you have a duty to risk losing your 50.000$ if that could help fight homophobia?

Anonymous said...

because HW is a cultural industry that founds itself for good half on the talent competence creativeness of gay people. And whether to open the minds and to spread tolerance should be one of the duty of art.

Anonymous said...

because HW is a cultural industry

No, Hollywood is movie business, private people and private firms are using their money to hire people and make movies.
You can't make up new rules of business just because you feel like it.
Like you can't make hospitals give big discounts to poor people - and that would be much more useful and dutiful.

But what HW status or rules of business have to do with homophobia in Hollywood anyway?

Anonymous said...

Movies are culture and art, in different ways and with different gradations, but it concerns art however, the cinema has not by chance called commonly the seventh art.

In my country health is free. One of the few good things of the Italian public administration.for the rest better living in some lost places in Africa.

You can't change facts because you don't like them - Hollywood is movie business, big and private movie business.

Do you have any arguments for your "Hollywood is homophobic" opinion?

Anonymous said...

I don't change the facts, if HW, hires directors as Sam Mendez or Terrence Malik and not men of business it is because it tries to produce something artistic, not only to make business. All the argumentss that I have expressed until now they are valid, and I don't need to add of new.

Just realized Jake Gyllenhaal has been in three time travel movies and in two of them has literally the same line.

Sorry,

you haven't provided any valid arguments to support "Hollywood is homophobic" opinion. And you keep changing subject because "Hollywood isn't homophobic" arguments are valid.

Anonymous said...

If you say so,but I am convinced to have done it, and only because you say that I have not done it, it doesn't mean that it is true ;)

Anonymous said...

PS I don't change subject, I follow the flow of the conversation that is varying otherwise it would be boring and repetitive.

Anonymous said...

If you say so,but I am convinced to have done it

You haven't done it because your arguments aren't valid - as explained in 11:49 AM and 11:57 AM comments.

Anonymous said...

I consider my arguments valid , and you are not the the judge of the validity of the arguments, I could make the same game with you saying that your arguments are less valid than mine, but I don't do it because I respect other people's opinions.

Anonymous said...

3:26 PM, I don't know what to think about your discussions and arguments. Your English is good, so here are few possibilities:

1. You don't understand what word 'argument' means.
2. You are incapable of logical and structured thinking, and can't see connection between opinion, argument and contra argument.
3. You are playing dumb.
4. You are suffering from narcissistic personality disorder and you can hear only yourself.

Anonymous said...

Yes, everything this and very other, I would also add, light squint, scarce sense of orientation and a light lycanthropy, leaves to you to choose what you prefer;)

Anonymous said...

So what is really wrong with you?

Anonymous said...

Really ,I can think about quite a lot things wrong with my but no one regarding the matter treated until now .

If closeted gay actors who are making millions of dollars in Hollywood prefer money to gay rights, why do you expect movie studios or producers to think more about gay rights and less about profit

Well I also prefer millions of dollars over gay rights. Money buys you stuff you need to live a nice and comfortable life . Can't pay your bills with gay rights .

Harvey Milk is uselessly dead-

Bad Ted said...

Dear Ted:
Where has Jake Gyllenhaal been lately? He seems off the Hollywood radar lately. Have you noticed? Same with Jennifer Aniston. Maybe they just needed a break from the paps. Sure, that must be it.
—PC

Dear JSqaured:
They're enjoying some well-earned away time out of the limelight, P. These two definitely generate a lot of attention when it comes to their love lives, but since Jake is more or less single at the moment (spending most of his time filming projects or scoring family time), there aren't juicy enough pictures worth selling. And Jen and her man have taken their romance way off the radar—that's how you know it's really serious.

Find out where Jake Gyllenhaal—or his stylist—shops in Toronto

Jake G’s jacket (Image: m0851)
A lot of paparazzi photos have surfaced of Jake Gyllenhaal from the set of An Enemy, and two things are being buzzed about: his impressive beard, and his leather jacket. The beard came from Jake G. himself, but the jacket is from Yorkville’s m0851. We can’t promise you that just wanting a beard will make it grow, but if you have $950, you could at least pretend to be as cool as Gyllenhaal in this motorcycle jacket. This could be just as popular as the Smythe jacket Kate Middlleton wore on a plane (at least to fans of Donnie Darko, Brokeback Mountain and, um, The Day After Tomorrow?).

I thought that leather jacket was one of the movie costumes.

They have spent the whole budget for the jacket and has not remained money for shoes!
