Can Hollywood "cure" gayness?

Luke Evans
Luke Evans

The Advocate, September 3, 2002

The Advocate: How did you decide you were going to be open about your sexuality?

Luke Evans: Well it was something I'd spoken to a lot of people about, including my boyfriend at the time - we've broken up now - but at the time when I just got Taboo, I knew that even though my part was a straight character, everybody knew me as a gay man and, in my life in London, I never tried to hide it. I knew I was going to have to do interviews with gay magazines, so I thought, ‘Well, I’m going to have to be open’. It’s who I am. And if people don’t like it, then I don’t want their jobs. I've never been a very good liar, which is another thing...

The Advocate: Aren't actors all good liars?

Luke Evans: Well, it's not nice. Look at George Michael, let's say. I mean, he hid it for so many years, and then he gets found out in a really awful way... Y'know, you start a slippery slope downward, and I don't want to start that at 22. If that means I'm going to be a poor man at 60, then at least I've lived a happy, open, gay life and not had to hide from anybody.

The Advocate: Do you think it might be different in the UK than in America?

Luke Evans: Well, it depends on how big you are. It's not a big issue, and it's never going to be a big issue for me; whether I'm successful or if I weren't successful, at least I'll never have that skeleton in the closet they can rattle out. Y'know what I mean?

Eight years later...

Wales On Sunday, September 19 2010

RISING actor Luke Evans is rapidly gaining star status after landing yet another major Hollywood role and romancing Charlotte Church’s ex – ex-PA, that is.

Fresh from playing breastplate-baring Zeus in Immortals and Apollo in Clash Of The Titans, 31-year-old Evans is sword fighting once again in a re-make of The Three Musketeers.

And Evans, from Aberbargoed, is described as “top farmer totty” for his role in Brit-com Tamara Drewe, has a special reason to be careful with his blade now he is dating stunning fashion industry marketing expert Holly Goodchild.

Miss Goodchild, 27, former personal assistant to Welsh singing superstar Church, said at the Tamara Drewe movie premiere: “Luke’s lovely – we’re really old friends and it just sort of happened.”

She added: “We are nowhere near engaged but things are really good.”

Country singer Chely Wright, who came out as lesbian last year, married Lauren Blitzer in an interfaith ceremony Saturday at Blitzer’s aunt’s home in Connecticut.

Wright met Blitzer, an LGBT rights activist, just two weeks after she came out. Saturday’s ceremony was officiated by both a minister and a rabbi because Wright is Christian and Blitzer is Jewish, People reports.

Wright, 40, and Blitzer, 30, both wore white wedding gowns but decided to forgo veils because, Wright told People, “We like our hair too much!”

More than 200 guests attended the wedding and a reception featuring barbecue from New York restaurant Blue Smoke and music by a DJ. “Bands at weddings make me nervous,” joked musician Wright, who also said the food was “Lauren’s idea” — Wright does not eat meat.

Wright also stressed to People the advantages of coming out: “The freedom of being out and open about who I am allowed me to find and fall in love with Lauren — the most amazing woman I've ever known.”

Gerard Butler DL gossip said...

I don't think the fact that he's never been married is proof that he's gay (or anybody else) but, the fact that he's never been in a long term relationship (and for argument's sake I consider 1 year+ "long term") is proof to me that he must be gay. Hell, I don't think he's had a relationship that lasted 4-5 months or longer than a few dates. He's either gay or has some very serious issues.

Plus, his "relationships" all seem fake. Some people here have said in other threads and I couldn't agree more that when a relationship is REAL and not for PR (whether the people are really gay or just media whores) the paps catch them doing daily, normal things like all couples and also when a relationship is real, couples don't like the attention that much. I think that's the best test if someone is gay - better than gossip, relationships past, gay face, gay voice, interpreting couples pictures and "chemistry" and so on.

I vote for GAY GB.

P.S A lesser possibility is that he's asexual (yeah, such people exist) or his junk doesn't work (either a physical problem or psychological).

Jake has a life and he's working. How about you get one, a Life or a Job..
He's not here on this earth to appease your needs of fun because you're bored.

How self centered you appear.

Yes, Jake is working after 14 months (more, less?) of free time (- movie promotion time).

Jake works in entertainment industry - that is his profession. He makes tons of money and has tons of free time. He's young. One would expect Jake to make better use of his time.

Or at least work on his career.

And,,, as an Adult, he may very well choose to do what "HE" wants with HIS time. And when he wants to, not what you want him to do when you want.

You don't think his life fits your script of a good talented actor and what they should be or not be doing, you can find another actor who does fit "YOUR" script.
It's easy.

James Franco got us looking so crazy right now after announcing that he’s getting into porn…as a director.

Whatever, man. Beggers can’t be choosers!

Franco first broke the news on Conan, but we assumed at the time that he was joking. Well, the joke’s on us! Homeboy is hard at work on a documentary about the porn industry, and has been spotted at the San Francisco Armory, home to porn juggernaut Kink.com.

To be honest, even if James Franco were simply adopting a kitten named “Porn,” he would still have our full and undivided attention. We’re very much looking forward to this.

No ass kissing needed. You're on a site dedicated to Jake.
So I assume you DO LIKE him?? Or are you here just to trash?
The statement stands, if the star, in this case Jake, does not meet your standards and approval, no need to frequent a fan site dedicated to the star, Jake that is.
See, No Ass Kissing. It's easy.
Just a decision.

I thought this was a site dedicated to waiting for Toothy. If you want a fansite go to the new IHJ or OMG. Try saying something critical over there and SK will have your throat or most certainly quickly change the subject.

There will no dicussion of Chely Wright's wedding on OMG. SK doesn't like it when an Gay person does something that makes the community proud. She pretty much thinks your trashing Jake and will quickly post right after and change the subject back to how wonderful Jake and Austin are when they are making a mockery out of what being Gay means..

You have got to stinkin' be kidding me with this comment. It's got to be about the most perplexing comment I've seen in ages on here or on OMG.

Just what exactly is Jake doing right now that could be hacking people off, other than maybe being bald?

Let's see - he's not bearding right now - hasn't been since Swift last November. He's not even had his name floated with a potential beard since the Olivia Wilde thing and even that was beaten down quickly. He just finished having a top selling DVD in Source Code. He's presently working on a tiny-budget, indie film. He's not been arrested, been caught in a drunken stupor, gambling fiasco, not been caught with drugs, and he's not doing blatant photo ops like coffee & shopping.

So what exactly does Jake need to be doing right now that will make him "worthy" of a compliment or a friendly observation?

What extraordinarily impossible expectations someone has.

prairiegirl said...

And anyone can say something fiery on OMG - for Pete's sake, I do it all the stinkin' time.

That statement is beyond stunning with its inaccuracy. To lump OMG with IHJ is an insult.

I don't know how Will and Jada have managed to keep their bearding off of the general public's radar. People keep saying that it's an "open secret" in LA that they are both gay-- but I wouldn't even call it that. These two attend swinger parties in some of the tonier LA neighborhoods TOGETHER. They're having same-sex-sexy-time IN FRONT OF STRANGERS. I mean... you don't even have to be famous to wind up at one of these parties... just beautiful. How has no one ratted them out to the press yet?

And, like the blind item writer, I am one [reputable] degree of separation from this info.

Hollywood PR said...

We know you're hearing conflicting reports about a certain celebrity couple. So, you want to know what's really going on? Of course you do! Here you go:

1. Saying that their marriage is "intact" is simply a fresh way of saying that they are not yet divorced. Therefore, it is a true statement.

2. Celebrities want to be in control of the timing of announcements about their personal lives. They get really irritated when information leaks out prematurely. This couple is no exception. The info was leaked and they are furious. Expect them and their publicist/s to continue to deny any rumors to maintain a modicum of control until all the pieces are in place for the divorce.

3. Whenever a couple insists on excessive PDA and statements about how manly/ womanly/ sexually active they are, you should immediately suspect that at least one of them is bearding for the other. In this case, it's a double bearding.

4. There are two publicists involved, not just one, and they are not playing well together. One contributing factor is a recent agent/agency shuffle.

5. Although the couple hasn't really spent any time together in the past month or so, the one thing on which all publicists can agree is photo ops! So you should expect several staged photo ops in the near future of the "intact" family. There will be lots of big, fake smiles and boisterous, fake laughter and playful, fake cuddling. They're actors, people. All of them. Actors know how to fake happiness.

6. Leaking information that a woman is having a secret affair with her costar is a very creative way of trying to convince people that your client is heterosexual. She is not.

7. Don't expect anyone to come out of the closet on this one as a result of the divorce. Their livelihoods depend on them being perceived as stereotypes of an A-list masculine action hero and a sexy and devoted mom.

8. Threats of lawsuits are mere blustering and are meant to discourage the media from printing additional stories. The truth is that this couple would never actually expose themselves to discovery (e.g. interrogatories, depositions, requests to produce documents).

9. They're done.

10. Yes, we're sure. We have only one degree of separation from this couple.

Zachary Quinto will play a gay character when he joins the cast of Glee co-creator Ryan Murphy new haunted house series American Horror Story for four episodes this fall, reports Deadline.

The series stars Dylan McDermott and Connie Britton as a married couple who move into a mysterious new home in Los Angeles for a fresh start following the wife's miscarriage and the husband's infidelity. Oscar- and Emmy-winner Jessica Lange costars (and steals every scene) as a nosy neighbor. Quinto will appear in at least four episodes as a gay man who once owned the house and befriends Britton's character.

The pilot, which pays homage to classic horror films, particularly Rosemary's Baby and The Shining, as well as TV's Twin Peaks, is filled with creepy characters, nudity, sex, and violence that make it one of the most provocative produced for television since Murphy's own Nip/Tuck. American Horror Story will premiere on F/X October 5.

Quinto previously played gay characters in the sitcom So NoTORIous and in the recent Broadway revival of Angels in America and last appeared on television in the sci-fi series Heroes. His next film Margin Call, in which he costars with Kevin Spacey and Penn Badgley, opens October 21.

Watch the teaser for American Horror Story below.

AN: This oil spill was really a big catalyst for us to really jump on the issue and start to motivate people.

SB: And to make the issue public and to really let people know how passionate we are about it. We're both pretty private, we're not the kind of people that are always running around trying to get our names and faces out there. We avoid that sort of thing and with being public about things you're passionate about does come an infringement on your privacy.

But that's what happens, now we have to acknowledge publicly things about our private life, like our relationship. There comes a point when you realize being quiet for your own convenience is no longer acceptable. and for us it was worth it to say look, we've got to put ourselves out there a little bit but this is so important, that it matters.
...

SB: Austin and i were just at Bonnaroo with a lot of our friends, and one of the things I love so much is that Bonnaroo really promotes itself as a green festival, and at every single location where there's a garbage can there's a landfill, a compost and a recycle can. We noticed this year that people were just leaving garbage wherever they were, and we were so grossed out at the main stage in this huge field waiting after one concert to see another that we went over to the food vendors, got giant plastic bags, and started picking up recycling and garbage to take over to the stations. As we were these crazy people walking around picking up other people's trash, we had fans of our show going, "Oh my gosh, this is so exciting, can we take pictures of you?" And we looked at each other and said, "If you bring us ten pieces of recycling, we will take a picture." So then all these groups of young people started running around this huge field, and then they'd count off ten pieces of recycling and then we'd take a photo with them and someone else would come up--for an hour we cleaned up!

PG: You both just recently started using Twitter [Ed: Follow Sophia and Austin to stay in touch with their ongoing efforts]. How has that affected your outreach?

AN: We were scared of Twitter, but we thought, how can we get this message out? So three days before we left we started the feeds and tried to get as many of our fans following as possible. As soon as we got down to the Gulf, we got messages from Brazil, Australia, all over the place, saying, our news is not telling us about this, we know nothing about this oil spill, if it wasn't for you guys Tweeting about it we wouldn't know anything about it. I know that each country covers it's own news more but I was amazed that they weren't hearing about the oil spill all over the world. People are really affected and angry everywhere.

SB: One of the things that's really amazing is seeing people saying, thank you for finally using Twitter for something good. We're not sitting here going hey, going to lunch here and then going on a jog--that's not information that's helping anyone. And what's been so special for us is the amount of information that's come back. People saying, look at this town that's newly running on wind energy in Sweden, and in Norway we're doing this, and in South America we've come up with these kinds of alternative fuels. It's really fascinating and it is something that ends up making you hopeful. People look at this and think they can't do anything, but everybody can. It's as simple as taking bags to the grocery store with you so you don't take plastic anymore.

But that's what happens, now we have to acknowledge publicly things about our private life, like our relationship. There comes a point when you realize being quiet for your own convenience is no longer acceptable. and for us it was worth it to say look, we've got to put ourselves out there a little bit but this is so important, that it matters.

Sophia and Austin are idiots.

You don't know that. I choose to think positively. Like the "Real M" said yesterday, she thought it was silly that weather reporters were out in the elements reporting. How else can they communicate the severity of a storm? She must think everyone should use her method, make something up without proof and report it. lol

Re: The Tea Partiers

An example of a great gov't organization is FEMA. FEMA is probably the most well-organized, efficent gov't organizations I have ever had the pleasure to have to had contact with, even if under not-so-great circumstances. Efficient, helpful, and their estimate of our flood damage was almost down to the penny accurate. So no or very little waste. I wonder what the conservative GOPs and Tea-Pariers have to say about that.

Just how stupid do Anderson Cooper — and Entertainment Weekly — think we are?

Really, really stupid, apparently.

In a profile of the celebrity newsman in the magazine's latest issue promoting the upcoming talk show Anderson, Cooper talks about a lot of things:

•His favorite TV shows.
•Intimate childhood details and memories.
•The emotional impact of his dad's death when Cooper was ten.
•The emotions he felt when he learned his brother had committed suicide.
And yet, in the second-to-last paragraph of this lavish four-page spread, the magazine also tells us, "There's no clarity, however, on whether Cooper will address the one topic many people want him to talk about: his personal life. For years, he has declined to speak about it."

"The less I know about reporters, the better, from my perspective as a viewer," Cooper tells us. "I'm not interested in their personal lives."

WTF? Didn't Cooper just spend the whole profile talking about some of the most intensely personal moments of his life? If that's not his "personal life," what is?

Oh, right. Cooper won't answer the question, "Are you gay?" And he won't give any details about the "person" he is or isn't dating — although he slyly allows that he might talk about it on his new talk show, saying, "I'm going to do stuff that's real and natural to me. But I certainly want to be a fully formed human being."

But wait, now I'm really confused. Didn't Cooper just tell us that he doesn't want to know anything about the "personal lives" of reporters?

Look, I'm not surprised that Cooper is offering these ridiculous, contradictory rationalizations to avoid answering questions that might reduce his Q-rating. He might call himself a "reporter," but first and foremost, he's a celebrity with an "image" to protectively guard.

But what the hell is Entertainment Weekly doing totally carrying his water and going along with this charade? This isn't just intellectually offensive, it's bad journalism: after all, the most basic part of journalism is to tell the truth, and what both the magazine and Cooper are telling us — that he doesn't discuss his "personal life" — simply isn't true.

AE said...

I was also under the impression that it's not the job of a journalistic outlet to merely help a celebrity hopelessly shill some upcoming project, which is basically the role that Entertainment Weekly has been reduced to here.

Shorter EW Anderson Cooper interview: "I hate it when reporters talk about their personal lives, and I don't talk about mine, except when I'm talking about the death of my dad or the suicide of my brother — but I just might come out as gay if you tune into watch my new show!"

Does entertainment "journalism" no longer even pretend to point out blatant, wildly self-serving hypocrisies on the part of their subjects?

Even worse, Cooper (and Entertainment Weekly's) bald P.R. spin worked: dozens of media outlets breathlessly repeated the news that Cooper might — just might! — be coming out on his new show.

Look, I get it. It's complicated when a celebrity comes out, especially a celebrity as famous and widely liked as Cooper.

It's especially complicated when the celebrity is living in the "glass closet" — the term coined to describe celebrities who are open among their friends and family, and even professionally, among their colleagues, but who still refuse to acknowledge their gayness to the public at large (who generally have no clue).

Here at AfterElton.com, we've written about these issues many, many times — even as we've long defended (not endorsed) the right of all GLBT celebrities to remain closeted if they choose to.

Likewise, there are definitely celebrities, gay and not, who really don't talk about their personal lives in any capacity. Daniel Craig is one, Ewan McGregor is another. They don't write memoirs or agree to "personality" profiles, and they only talk about their artistic projects.

But that doesn't describe most celebrities, who will gladly divulge very intimate details in order to promote their new project, and it absolutely doesn't describe Anderson Cooper, who's willing to talk on the record about the suicide of his brother. I can't really think of anything more personal than that, unless maybe we're talking about specific sexual practices.

By contrast, merely acknowledging one's gayness, or naming the person you're dating, doesn't seem very personal to me at all. After all, that's the kind of thing you put on your social media profile, available to even the slightest of friends. Or it's something you might indicate to someone within five minutes of meeting them at a party or the office.

I know, I know. Some people still freak out about gayness, so it's a "big deal," whether it's "personal" or not.

But would it kill Entertainment Weekly to at least pay lip service to some of the hypocrisy and contradictions involved here? Because I'm kinda tired of having my intelligence insulted.

US actor James Franco will not be making his Broadway debut in Tennessee Williams' Sweet Bird of Youth this autumn, his publicist has confirmed.

The 127 Hours star had been set to appear opposite Nicole Kidman in the play, which tells of an ageing actress and the gigolo who exploits her. Franco's publicist did not state why the 33-year-old was no longer involved.

The actor is currently filming Oz: The Great and Powerful and studying for a doctorate in English at Yale. Franco, currently on screen in Rise of the Planet of the Apes, will also soon to be seen in long-running US soap General Hospital.

The actor, who co-hosted the Oscars earlier this year, has a number of films in various stages of production.

Sweet Bird of Youth had been one of most anticipated plays this season because of Franco and Kidman's involvement.

1. Pants aren't unique, they are made in > 1 quantity - I'm sure you know that.

2. Special didn't post a photo where we could see Austin's pants and compare.

3. So far we only have "proof" that Jake shares his pants with Gavin Rossdale.

Always consider the source!

If there are photos of Austin's pants where we can see for sure that his pants are different, it wouldn't surprise me if Special K would "forget" to post them.

Special K isn't interested in the truth - her agenda is to prove that Jake and Austin are together, married with kids.

BTW, I looked at the full set of pics at IHJ and the pants that Jake are wearing appear to be lighter, and I don't think it's because he is outdoors because he is in the shade at one point. Also the holes are more shredded, Mr. Soapy's appear to be just a straight tear and they also look to be darker, more tan and the material looks different.
