In high school, I always loved movies; yet, I always looked at them passively. Only rarely did I become involved in the events or with the characters I saw on screen. In fact, prior to Brokeback Mountain I can't think of a single instance when I felt a profound emotional reaction to a film. I remember getting a little choked up while watching the end of Jonathan Demme's Philadelphia, but that's as close as it ever got to my becoming emotionally invested in situations taking place in a movie.
I watched Brokeback Mountain with my father on opening weekend back in late 2005 — though we had actually gone to see Capote instead. When we tried to buy tickets, we realized there was only one showing of Capote four or five hours later. Brokeback Mountain, however, was playing in just an hour; so, we bought two tickets and went to Borders to wait.
Since at the store they had a display with E. Annie Proulx's short story, my father and I each grabbed a copy and read it while we waited to see the movie, which had been getting phenomenal reviews. Curiously, I remember feeling underwhelmed by the short story. I thought to myself, "I don't even know if I'm excited to see this movie anymore." But since we had already bought the tickets, there wasn't really any turning back.

After the hour passed, we went in. As I sat there watching Brokeback Mountain unfold, something changed within me. I don't know what caused it exactly, but I remember that I started crying when Gustavo Santaolalla's "The Wings" began playing while Jack and Ennis are at the campfire. I had never, ever cried because of a movie. And frankly, I did not understand how or why anyone would. Still, as I sat there in the theater, I could not contain my tears.
Eventually, I stopped crying, but the tears began streaming down once again when Ennis collects Jack's shirt and hugs it, fighting to hold on to the man he loved. I shed more tears at the end of the film, when Ennis opens his closet door, looks at the shirt, and the credits slowly start to roll.
I don't know why, but ever since that first time I saw Brokeback Mountain, my entire movie-watching experience has been radically different. After that, I have revisited movies I had seen before; suddenly, I was looking at them in a new light; at times, I was able to connect with them where before I had been emotionally and/or intellectually detached.
In addition, whether or not I'm watching a movie for the first time, I have been able to find layers to characters and settings that would have been out of my reach before. In essence, Brokeback Mountain made me realize how much I truly love the art of film. It also inspired me to start writing about it.
I mustered the courage to start posting my film commentaries online only in 2008 or whereabouts, but I had never considered writing about movies prior to Brokeback Mountain. In a profound way, that same-sex love story set in the American West made me realize there were tangible differences between bad cinema, good cinema, and great cinema. Needless to say, I'm fully aware that my Brokeback Mountain experience was exceptional, for having such a visceral response to any film is something quite unique.
Even though I cannot fully explain my personal reaction to the film, I must credit the filmmakers for it. Had Brokeback Mountain not been crafted the way it was, I find it impossible to believe that I would have been so deeply affected by it. After all, I had felt quite unenthusiastic after reading E. Annie Proulx's short story.
I have watched Brokeback Mountain many times since that first viewing. My experience has been different each time, but the film's power has never been lost. As we grow, our experiences change; our hope is that they will change not for the worse, but for the better. Thanks to Brokeback Mountain, I can happily say that mine have been forever changed for the better.

I think the three of them got really close during the shoot and it intensified during promo. Matilda was born at the time, hence Heath choosing Jake as gf, it kind of fit at the time. Also for symbolic reasons.
Michelle always seemed to like Jake (she seems comfortable with him, at one point stroking Jake's back at the BBM press conf. in front of Heath, so. They all seemed and seem very comfortable with each other). She did not mind the admiration and/or crush thing Jake and Heath had going on.

My last movie was Avatar. Why? Because everybody went to see it . I don't have the money to spent 20 Euros on something nobody wants to see.

I think Source Code seals it, Jake just can not carry movies, not even the ones with excellent reviews. It's sad. DiCaprio manages to keep movies in the top five for months, even if they are't that good, i.e. Shutter Island. Oh well.

If a box office star starred in a movie like Source Code, the movie would reach 100 millions domestically. Now Jake can be happy if the movie reaches 35-40. It's another flop for him, at least he and the movie received largely good reviews.

Box office estimates are pretty true even while only estimates. Computers track sales especially advance sales and they get reported to the studios pronto. Manual counting went out with the abacus. As for Jakes lack of box office appeal. No secret there. You need a big personality to make people want to shell out money to see you. Hes too guarded and safe. But in all fairness to Jake, Arthur and Your Highness look like they will take in less than SC did the first weekend, and that surprises me. Still looks like the only movies people are going to in large numbers are the family films. Looks like lots of people don't want to spend the money. I don't go to as many movies in the theaters as I used to because in NYC it costs $13 unless you go to a 10 a.m. showing.

I don't find Aniston likable, she got on my nerves on Friends with her constatly errect nipples and bad acting. Except for The Good Girl, all her movies appear to be the same. Boring. Wimp Pitt seems better matched with that pathetic Jolie anyway.
Jake is one of those actors who do not appeal to masses. He should not expect leading man offers. But he is a good actor, if he concentrates on finding good, challenging roles and gives 110 % everytime, he should be fine. A big movie star, he probably will never be. But he tried, which is ok.
It would be completely irrelevat if Jake came out as gay, he still would have no b.o. appeal. It is how it is. Nonetheless it would be a brave and respectable move.

Well Source Code is not even in the Top Five for this weekend. Not good at all.
Limitless is taking some of SC's b.o.. It's still going okay in the fourth weekend and it cost less than SC. Looks like Bradley Cooper has another hit on his hands. Honestly, I feel bad for Jake.

Jake had an excuse for PoP underperforming because of the mostly bad reviews and with LAOD because of the mixed reviews and nudity, but there is no excuse for SC flopping. DVD’s and streaming make it easier to wait. I saw 4 movies in a theater in the last 12 months. (3 were 3d movies and wouldn’t look good at home.)
I will be off for a few days soon so I can go to a cheaper, earlier movie and then I will see SC. The people i know (very few go to the movies anymore) who went, liked it.
You need to be positive. #’s 2-5 are new movies and they are estimated to make less than SC did its first week. So, SC really did better than them.

You do have to wonder what next for Jake. Although i've always had a very soft spot for him (why else would I be here) I've also thought he's been more hype than substance (with some very big backers). However, you've got to wonder how much longer someone can be sold as an A-list star, when they can't open a movie and are really more famous for being tabloid friendly. Unless Nailed raises its ugly head its going to be at least a year before another of Jake 'last chance at a hit' films hits the screen. I'm betting that directors won't be castig Jake in leading men roles anymore. His next movie is a small budget indie movie. I think his futur lies in indie movies and if he stars in big movies he'll probably be cast in supportig roles.

It makes you wonder why BBM was so successful box office-wise. There are lots of well received, controversial movies that don't make much money. It's a mystery.

Huh? I seriously doubt that.
There are many actors with gay rumors... Tom Cruise, Leo, Clooney... to name a few. Yet they are b.o. stars. It's just, you either have IT or you don't. For some reason Jake doesn't have it, despite him not being less talented or attractive than them. It's the it factor, or lack thereof IMO.

Jake needs to work on his acting skills and find out what he's good in. I believe he would be great in comedies (not romcoms) and my advice would be to look for good comedy material and do support role.

Jake won the Bafta for BBM. Jake won the MTV award for Best Actor for BBM. Somebody including teenagers really liked him. Jake would have probably won the Oscar if Clooney had not been nominated.

SC is predicted to make $9 million this weekend--that's pretty good given it opened at $15 million, usually you see a drop of 50%. In the case of LAOD I think the second week really plunged. Is it going to make a ton of money? No, but it may end up doing okay, especially with foreign box office and dvd rentals thrown in.

( Kiki may have been the it girl for a nano second because of Spiderman, but she was still quirky, unconventional, and not beholden to the HW star system.)
But then he clammed up, stopped with the seemingly off the cuff gyllenbabble, bearded with Reese, an epitome of the HW system, with all its phoniness, constant and fake photo opps and pursuit of fame and money at any cost. His interviews and talk show appearances began to be designed to address concerns/holes in his image (something I have not noticed goes on to the degree it does with Jake). In between movie promotion, he disappears for months at a time and gets bent out of shape with the paps when they're not the ones on his speed dial.
Jake has become a product manufactured by his team.
His old fans can see that, and Jake 2.0 hasn't caught on with the public because there is nothing distinctive about it, and at times it seems downright robotic, not human.
They killed the things in Jake that attracted his fans in the first place.
It's very telling that the entire "family bliss" vibe between HL and MW stopped inmediately after movie promo was over. Suddenly they didn't want to say one word about their life together and I think is very odd that a couple who is 100% happy becomes totally miserable in only 1 year.It usaually takes longer time for two people in love finish their relationship in such a determinated way.

Even if that was Austin it wouldn't matter to PR - why would PR care about a photo of Jake, his friend Austin, Peter and lots of other people? What would be incriminating about such photo?
You forget that Jake went almost two years being papped with no one but Reese. It was only when people here and elsewhere started "complaining" that Jake seemed to never see his family and friends, and that the lack of any other photos showed how staged this all was, that Jake and Reese all of sudden had a flurry of photos with other people, starting with RDJ.
Jake particularly has a "problem" with being papped with other men. Funny because personally I think that makes him look all the gayer, not straighter.

And for those who think Jake & his people don't pay attention to what is being said on here, notice how he stopped being seen exclusively with Busy Phillips after both WFT2 and OMG began speculating why he was being seen with her so much - that she was a mom and had children. Where was her husband?
Then we began seeing Busy's husband with Jake.
When comments began to focus on that threesome, now it has stopped completely.
We haven't seen Jake with Busy Phillips and her husband since.
