Feelings for another person aren't always black and white. I think that at the time, Heath still was mixing his feelings for his daughter with the ones he had for Michelle.
It happens all the time between couples, a baby makes them shared a bond but it fades away very quicky if the love is not solid enough

Franco received an award for helping sick children, but I've never heard of him going to hospitals or otherwise support such a project.
Depp for instance really goes to children's hospitals in his captain Jack costume and even donated a huge amount of cash to a children's hospital (all low key though) and never received such an award. Oh well.
