Feels So Good That It Can’t Be Wrong

Ricky Martin Ricky Martin, "Me" book signing, November 2010

There is something beautiful in witnessing a major celebrity in the throes of profound and real transformation. A week before we meet, Ricky Martin had made a surprise appearance at the annual Human Rights Campaign national dinner to pledge his support. “Something as simple as standing at that dinner and saying, ‘I’m gay,’ creates so may emotions I’ve never felt before,” he admits. “I didn’t do it earlier because of fear, and, bottom line, it was all in my head. I was seduced by fear, and I was sabotaging most of my life -- my music, my relationships with my friends, with my family, with everybody. That’s something I need to share because I know that a lot of people are going through what I went through, no matter what their age, and fear cannot control us.”

Ricky Martin is about to share big time -- with his new memoir, Me, a remarkably heartfelt account of his journey from teen group Menudo to fatherhood, delivered in a frank, conversational style that doesn’t economize on the truth. It includes accounts of his first passionate affairs -- with men and with women -- as well as his struggle to reconcile his conflicted yearnings with his rapid ascent in America. The pivotal year is 1999, at which Martin performed his World Cup anthem, “La Copa de la Vida,” at the Grammys. Largely unknown in the United States beyond Hispanic audiences, he left the stage as a breathless Rosie O’Donnell (the evening’s host) exclaimed, “Who was that cutie patootie?”

It was connecting the dots that led directly to Martin’s tweet last March. In his memoir, he recounts how friends and colleagues remonstrated with him to hold off: “I ignored all their recommendations, and by the end, when they came to me with the argument that I shouldn’t do it during Easter because it might offend my Christian fans, I said: ‘What part of ‘I can’t take it any more’ do you not understand? What about me?’”

Above all, he says he worried about Matteo and Valentino having to answer for their father’s untruths. How would they respond as they grew older? Would they have to lie on his behalf? “How could I teach my kids to lie?” he asks. “How could I teach them not to be themselves?” And, as simple as that, he realized he couldn’t and wouldn’t. “My children will grow up with no prejudice,” he says. “As parents, we need to create a new way of thinking for our kids, in which we accept, and we love, and we can vibe with everybody.”

Andrew Garfield who will probably be Oscar nominated for Social Network said for his role in Spider Man he's drawing inspiration from Heath's acting in TDK. Now that kid's going places. Say what you want about Heath, he was an incredibility dedicated and talented actor, and he was younger than Jake is now when he delivered a performance other actors use as inspiration. Meanwhile Jake is WASTING his youth and acting skills on terrible movies and tabloids fauxmances.

For instance that he said he did LAOD to counteract BBM. He NEVER said that.

Yeah, he pretty much did. There is no other logical way to interpret "clear the air."

http://www.eonline.com/uberblog/b209790_jake_gyllenhaal_brokeback_was_just.html

Brokeback was just acting!

"It's different because this story is about us," Jake told us on the carpet for his premiere at the AFI Fest presented by Audi. "The other story was about how we were not into each other."
And Gyllenhaal is hoping his chemistry with Hathaway in this flick will set the horny record straight. Way straight:
"I would hope that this could clear the air that it was acting," J.G. said referring to his homolicious role in Brokeback with late BFF Heath Ledger.
"[Anne and I] have sex like 16 or 17 times in this one," laughed Jake to reporters about his and "Annie's" chemistry (which is real good).

Why "clear the air"? We know BBM was acting, Jake is paranoid.

Jake repeated fangirl "argument" for his "heterosexuality": "some people think Jake is gay just because he played gay - but Jake was acting!".

I saw the movie last night and would say LAOD was average. Yes, Jake and Anne are likeable (no surprise there), and there is some snappy, funny dialogue but, in the end, it’s impossible to feel much for these two characters as they boink their way across the screen. They both are certainly beautiful to look at, but I never bought the hound dog Jamie falling hard for the bohemian Maggie. Without that, the movie can’t work, no matter how charming or chemically in tune Jake and Anne are. The story was cloying and contrived and rarely had an authentic moment when it came to the love story. Not worth the $11 admission. DVD is the most appropriate platform for this light-weight romp.

Is there a "oh no, not sex again!" LAOD moment or not?

Anonymous said...

Is there a "oh no, not sex again!" LAOD moment or not?

The sex scenes were, most times, quickie, "can't keep my hands off of you" moments. Over before you had a chance to go, "Oh, no, not another one." But, I know I distinctly remembered when the "I love sex, but not the intimacy" message became stale, for me, was when one of the scenes was filmed in an artsy, blurred bodies format (like through a shower glass). I thought, "Looks like they are running out of ideas of how to portray more emotionally detached sex, without an NC-17 rating."

That's exactly what Todd McCarthy said(former longtime Variety movie critic now HR movie critic said in his review on indiewire.com).

I get the impression that the reason why Jaime falls hard for Maggie is because they have great sex and she has great breasts. Some critics have speculated that because they don't know either.

Anonymous said...

10:59, would you agree with Jake that LAOD is the child of BBM?

IA. I suppose the scene where Jamie's brother observes that Jake's character wants Maggie because she's rejected him, is a possible attempt, weak as it might be, to try to address the "Why?" issue. Unfortunately, the script tap dances around what is lacking in Jamie that might cause him to be drawn to someone who pushes him away. There's a line at the end where Jamie tells Maggie that he finally feels that just being him is "enough" which, if realistically developed, might have been an interesting avenue to pursue. Zwick, however, seems much more drawn to the physical and shallow than the complexities of what lies inside these two people's hearts. As a result, the movie left me somewhat cold.

Anonymous said...

Thanks, 10:59. Sounds like a fair review. You have to wonder why Zwick and his co-writers didn't realize they were writing so many cliches because it seems so obvious to everyone else, even a lot of the positive reviewers.

This is completely polar opposite to BBM in which so much unsaid and felt was not spoken or directly expressed on the surface. And Jake thinks LaOD is the child of BBM? Really? Would Ang Lee think so if he saw LaOD?

Ha! Now, that's funny. Maybe an abandoned child.

Anonymous said...

THIS. BBM is a masterpiece for a lot of reasons, and this is one of them. Ang and Diana and Larry (and AP in the story) did not spoon feed the audience or beat them over the head. They spoke directly to the intelligent viewers and didn't feel the need to cater to the idiots by lowering their own standards and visions.

Very interesting review--the critic disliked Jake's character--calling him basically an unredeemable jerk that the writers want the audience to root for. He also felt that Anne's character was not just a stock character (manic pixie dream girl) but that even she deserved better than Jake's character: http://dcist.com/2010/11/love_and_other_drugs.php

Now, if this film had taken the position that Jamie was a manipulative bastard, and she was weak-willed, and that sometimes one falls for the other, that would have been one thing. But that's not who these characters are made out to be, and their world-beating romance is meant to stir the heart to emotions other than disgust.

The character they've created in Maggie seems like she would be savvy enough to realize that Jamie is all talk more readily than she does. Instead, we're left with contrived contradictions in a character who's willing to put up with far too much from her partner -- so long as he says he's sorry at the end of the day. She deserves better than this guy, and I'd like to think we deserve better than what this movie is trying to say.

Oh be honest if Jake were to come out gay, you would be saying that the "late great" Heath Ledger was not as good an actor as Jake. You're just upset that Jake is not gay, be honest for goodness sake. You are bitter because you know no matter how much you wish it, it will never be true.

As far as Garfield looking to Heath's role in Batman, that dude must be dumb because Heath was playing the bad guy. Spiderman is the good guy, and that guy is one ugly dude.

Soon there will be books or stories trashing Heath and his drug use, right now is the dead angel but soon people will be telling the "real story" Heath's performance was way overrated. He got the Oscar because he died, get real. The academy likes to make themselves look good and for those who voted for him, most were friends who watch Heath destroy himself and did nothing. Guilt won the Oscar for Heath.

Jake is not gay, get over it. You are comparing his personal life to Heath's professional life which is just plain batshit crazy.

And it will probably do very well overseas, so stop your bad luck wishing. It will make its money and more. But don't fret if it doesn't, Jake will still be straight, do more movies and fuck Taylor Swift. And you all will still be bitter and losers.

05:02 PM - while I disagree with the constant Jake bashing and blaming him for things he probably even didn't do or say, I would still disagree with some of his decisions even if he were straight. Those relationships (in case he's straight or bi)with Dunst, RW and TS are too public. It's unnecessary attention. He could also choose someone who's not so much in the lime light. He also recently chooses too many cliche ridden movies. I realize that that maybe isn't his fault, maybe it's the only offers he's receiving? I think he should do more idie stuff combined with mainstream. Generally work more. He may not be the creme de la creme in Hollywood, but he is very solid and should be in better movies.

As for Heath, the guy showed his talent in his early career, but was very unfortunate with his projcets (similar to Jake right now), finally BBM came and critics finally recognized his talent. I personally don't find his role as Joker to be overrated, maybe he wouldn't have won the Oscar if he were alive, but he still would have deserved it. I found his Joker better than his Ennis. Both are great performances though.
As a person I was indifferent towards Heath, he had his good and bad sides like everyone.

"Half its budget is 15 millions not 30."

The movie needs to make 30 millions to get 15 millions return. The studio gets only 50% of the box office. The movie needs to make 60 million to recover the 30 million budget. Also, the LAOD budget was 30 millions, but we have to add the marketing costs. It had a very aggressive marketing campaign and lots of advertisement that must have been very expensive.

Wait, can you just get the visual of Taylor Swift sitting down to dinner with the Gyllenhaal clan. Maggie talking about filming her movie in England. But she can't say it's about a vibrator because you know, Taylor's sensitive ears. Maggie and Peter can discuss their upcoming Broadway play. Jake can discuss upcoming projects and they can discuss various business people with mom and Taylor can teach Ramona how to make a heart shape with her fingers. And then after dinner, before Jake and Taylor go out for patted while everyone else stays in for coffee and dessert, Taylor can teach Ramona the latest cheerleading routines. Oh to be a fly on the wall for that dinner today.

11:20AM, I'm glad you brought this up. It is morally, ethically and in every other way despicable for a doctor to tell a patient that a drug rep is an "intern" and allow the rep to stay for an exam - even if the patient didn't undress. The fact that she does undress makes it even worse. I think several reviewers have mentioned this scene and describe the doctor as unethical, shady, sleazy, etc. I guess though, this is Zwick's idea of "meeting cute" or "meeting funny." I haven't seen the movie, but what's even more puzzling is that Hathaway's character (apparently) doesn't file some kind of charges against the doctor instead of hitting Jake over the head with her purse (which I guess is supposed to be cute and funny, too, and the lead to sex.) I mean, you turn around a sleep with a guy who would do something like this? I don't care if it's "just for the sex," that shows an appalling lack of self-respect. I think a couple of reviewers also mentioned the portrayal of women in the film as either brainless bimbos, scheming manipulators or Parkinson's victims. That bothers me, too.

Anonymous said...

By the way, masturbation to whoever you want to is not illegal and is not against the Hippocratic Oath.

That scene can be defined by one only word: DESPICABLE and STUPID

well, those are two words actually.

"Conning his way into the exam room of a doctor he is trying to sell on Zoloft, the character, a pharmaceuticals rep, is present while a young Parkinson’s sufferer (Anne Hathaway) discusses her sad circumstances — then he stares as she shows the doctor a splotch on her breast. Hands up, ladies, if you think this is a cute way to meet a guy. Five minutes later, they’re in the sack."

Taylor Swift & Jake Gyllenhaal Share Thanksgiving Maple Lattes

Families across the country spent their Thanksgiving evenings tuning into Taylor Swift's NBC special Taylor Swift: Speak Now. But where was the starlet spending her Turkey Day?
In Brooklyn, alongside new boyfriend Jake Gyllenhaal. Around 10:30 a.m., the pair popped into Park Slope's Gorilla Coffee for specialty maple lattes, made with pure Vermont syrup.
"They were really sweet, really really sweet," says a source at the shop, adding that the duo also tipped well.
"They get treated like normal people around here," says the source, noting that Gyllenhaal, 29, deals with the occasional star-struck customer politely.
The actor's sister Maggie Gyllenhaal lives near the crowded neighborhood shop – which boasts loud music and an energetic staff – and frequently stops in.
The source says that this was Swift's first time in the shop. Being introduced to favorite family haunts? Sounds like the singer-songwriter, 20, is being welcomed right into the Gyllenhaal family lifestyle – one maple latte at a time.

^^I maen, he doesn't do anything besides. He's not in a band, doesn't produce or direct like many of his other peers. I think he's lazy.

Source Code - I heard the movie wasn't well received after a test screening.

I also read Jones' tweet, how he's happy to finish that "Hollywood film" and move on to his next project.

The problem is, people are tired of predictable storylines in various genres. Jake needs to star in smth. original again.

The jerk off scene is icky and dumb,i have to agree. But it is about incest as Pretty Woman is about prostitution.

They are brothers, family members don't do anything like that as a norm, it is about incest too. Pretty Woman is a fairy tail about a prostitute and prostitution.

LAOD critical reaction doesn't come as a surprise, it wasn't accepted at any of the important film festivals. Oh well.

The scene in the doctor's office where Jake and Anne's character meet sums up what is wrong with the movie. The first half hour or so is an indictment of the pharma industry and the sleazy way they push drugs. But then they tack on this by the books romcom. The movie is schizophrenic.

destiny, thanks for chiming in. I know you saw it, so let me ask you: I know Jamie is supposed to redeem himself by falling in love and promising to stand by the sick gf. LAOD is going to open at #6 or #7.

Jake should rethink his career, cause this is going nowhere.
No good prospects for SC either.

Maybe he should take a break for a while?

(I wonder if Anne regrets agreeing to do the movie? She and her former co-stars managed to pull good b.o. numbers even with middling to bad reviews. Now she'll have a turkey after a long time again.)

Anne is working, she'll be fine. Jake should work hard looking for good projects, he has too much free time as is.

Well put because we all know what big box office draws Franco and Gosling, oh but wait. Are they even still working?

LMAO!!! Are you for real? Franco is a shoe-in for an Oscar nom for Best Actor. Gosling is getting rave reviews, as usual, for Blue Valentine.

The only people being driven insane are Babblers and fangirls because of LAOD's blah reviews and blah box office. Plus, they know the Swifty fauxmance makes Jake look gayer than ever but they can't admit it, lol, so they have to pretend that he would actually be interested in her even though it's driving them nuts :)

Anne's boobies and Jake's peen or fakepeen or whatever it is also being discussed at ONTD, lol. One of the comments on the thread re the brother:

"When jake's character's brother was jerking it to his tape with her I wanted to throw up."

Anonymous said...

They withheld the reviews in hopes people would go see it before word got out that the film was mediocre. Did not work.

The Swift romance was the straw that broke the camels back. How does the saying go. A bird in the hand is worth 2 in the bush. Jake had a solid fan base after BBM but he and his PR did not want them anymore. They wiped them out with the Reese bearding and expected to get a whole new crop of Reese hangers on. No cigar. Now they are trying for Swift carryover. How pathetic is that. Not working either. It drove off the few new fans he had picked up during the Reese days.

Anonymous said...

I am skeptical of the peen. If there was frontal nudity I think they would have mentioned it. Nobody that saw the film mentioned seeing it either. It sure does look like peen in that screen shot but it is pointing in the wrong direction for being engaged in sex. Is it from an outtake or actually in the movie. If its an outtake he said the merkin fell off a few times. Then its real Jakey peen.

Travolta Fires Back at Gay Sex Claims said...

A lawyer for John Travolta has sent a five-page letter to Gawker.com demanding the website yank a “false and outrageous” post about the actor’s sex life, which includes claims he has engaged in sex acts with other men in multiple Los Angeles steam rooms.

Attorney Marty Singer fired off the letter Tuesday, days after the website published the gay claims by Robert Randolph, a man claiming he has witnessed the gay encounters. Randolph says he’s planning to tell all in a self-published book.

In the letter, Singer calls the claims "blatant defamatory lies" from a "patently unreliable source.” He points out that Randolph admits on his website to suffering from permanent brain damage and questions why Randolph is just now coming forward with stories he claims took place 15 years ago.

The letter demands Gawker remove the post and "the publication of an unequivocal and prominent retraction of the false and defamatory statements."

HUGE SPOILER ALERT

Anne's character never really takes him to task for the industry he is in. Not a word about how they're pushing erection drugs while there is nothing for her condition. Jake's character gets a big promotion he was hoping for, a job in Chicago instead of the sticks, but he later decides to quit because of Anne, and because Anne has convinced him he is not the failure he thinks he is, and that he should go to medical school like his parents always wanted.

She got paid $2500 to have her photo taken arriving at the gym with the twilight water bottle. SHE EVEN TOLD THEM HER LOCATION! She tells these people all the time! Thanks, destiny. So Zwick never follows through on his "indictment" of big pharma. Too bad. It also doesn't seem to make sense that Anne's character would never say a word about the irony of his job and her situation. Looks like Zwick instead glosses over or ignores hard questions so he can get to cliche romcom moment. Instead of running through an airport, he drives after a bus, but same thing.

Now we can patiently wait for his next turkey, SC. The same will happen like with Rendition, Brothers, PoP, LaOD.
I wonder how many turkeys Jake can afford befor no one casts him anymore? He is true b.o. poison.
I wonder how he feels about it?

How could Jake feel? Bad. Probably wondering who is more popular than Taylor Swift and would be interested in bearding for him.

I don't think you can call him b.o. poison. His last several movies have under performed for sure, but it's not like they're great films to begin with and he's the only thing bringing them down. I don't understand how he thought PoP and LAOD were great scripts to begin with. Don't actors have agents and managers that field scripts for them? Who is feeding him this stuff?

Yeah, that makes sense, I understand that. But is it possible that the agent, manager or whoever is seeing stuff that they pass on before they show it to him because they don't think it would further his career in the way they want? I'm wondering if maybe he's passing on stuff that he should have taken.

Not very likely because Jake would find out about it sooner or later - and fire them.

And, of course, agents and managers want Jake to be successful because that means more $$$ for them too.

His bad luck has nothing to do with bearding.

I think it does. Jake's success came in part from the fact fans thought he was different, i.e, not part of the HW machine. People loved Jake after BBM in part because of the mystery and sexual ambiguity.

By bearding Jake killed everything that made him "jake" in the eyes of many fans. Add in the fact that it was so over the top--Franco's relationship has never been spread all over the tabloids like Reeke and Swifty.

destiny said...

Regarding Jake and scripts, that New York article said CAA moved heaven and earth to get him POP. I think Jake and CAA have cared less about good scripts than getting him into the type of films that they think will make him an A-list star.

I think the last good movie he was in was Zodiac. I think all of the talk about scripts is partly a matter of the usual movie promotion bs, and partly the old, "my mother is a screenwriter" story.

Quote by closeted gay actor Leo DiCaprio said...

On rumors: I've heard some pretty bad rumors...that I'm gay. If I want to go to a party with a few male friends, it doesn't mean that I'm gay. I don't see why I can't have friends of both sexes without rumors being spread about me. It's crazy.

Source: IMDB, biography, his quotes.

What's funny is that he is still loved by the gay community and WFT2, whereas Jake is getting dissed continously.
