Love and Obstacles

Cynthia Nixon and family

October 4, 2010

This past weekend, the New Yorker held its annual festival, which -- as always -- includes a multitude of speakers and panels discussing a variety of topics. Top players in all professions were represented, including Stephen King, Malcolm Gladwell, Jake Gyllenhaal and Regina Spektor -- all chatting about themselves and their areas of expertise. Our favorite, though, would have to have been Cynthia Nixon on the panel discussion "Love and Obstacles: The Case for Gay Marriage."

Ms. Nixon, who is most known for her role has Miranda Hobbes in Sex and the City, and now is engaged to education activist Christine Marinoni, stole our hearts with her rather calm, well made argument. Not only does she make a good case, she makes an example of how to make said point.

“Gay people who want to marry have no desire to redefine marriage in any way. When women got the vote, they did not redefine voting. When African-Americans got the right to sit at a lunch counter alongside white people, they did not redefine eating out. They were simply invited to the table. And that is all we want to do. We have no desire to change marriage. We want to be entitled to not only the same privileges, but the same responsibilities as straight people.”

Sort of OT -

Lively meets Leo!

Newly single Blake Lively dined with Leonardo DiCaprio at NYC eatery The Lion on Wednesday, an insider confirms to UsMagazine.com. (LaineyGossip.com first reported the sighting.)

But Lively, 23, and DiCaprio, 35, weren't alone. "It was an 8 person dinner," the insider explains, adding that director Baz Luhrmann was in attendance.

PHOTOS: Surprise! These celebs are pals

And the meal was strictly business: DiCaprio has been cast as Jay Gatsby in Luhrman's adaptation of The Great Gatsby, F. Scott Fitzgerald's classic book -- and Lively is being strongly considered for the role of Gatsby's love, Daisy Buchanan.

Absolutely gorgeous.

That's why people applauded. He's not willing to play games anymore or try to make his gayness more palatable to the public by claiming to be bi.

Are you stating that (ALL) people who say that they are bisexual are lying and trying to make their sexuality more palatable for the public? (SRAIGHTS and GAYS)?
Is this what you are saying?
Or, Just Men?

Anonymous said...

Is this what you are saying?

No one ever said that ALL people lie about being bisexual, but we do KNOW that some gays lie about being bisexual, deal with that.

well maybe the taylor thing is working, people are now twittering about Jake being a good guy and seeing the LAOD trailer and wanting to see the movie.

If Shifty Swifty helps Jake's career than she has my vote besides its not like I would ever have a shot at him.

Anonymous said...

"Absolutely gorgeous."

If you mean Leo yes, Blake then no. That girl only has legs that go on forever but she is no great beauty. Or that pretty.

Anonymous said...

What does Taylor have to do with people wanting to see LAOD? More likely it is the the fact that the trailer has started running on TV this week.

I noticed that many male celebs date or have PR relationships (or both combined) with much younger women... DiCaprio, Clooney now Jake and the list goes on.

Oh, come on. DiCapiro and Clooney are with gorgeous, sexy models. They might be a lot younger than them, but they are women who look and act like women, not little girls making cutesy heart signs with their hands.

Anonymous said...

If you mean Leo yes, Blake then no.

I think Blake has a classy look about her that would make a perfect Daisy Buchanan. With Baz Luhrmann directing, The Great Gatsby should be wonderful.

No one cared about TR Knight and his much younger boyfriend because this blog is about Jake and Austin. A 10 year difference at 20 vs 29 is a lot different than 30/39 or 40/49. There is a huge difference in maturity between 20 and 30. Besides she acts like a child. That is why it is creepy.

The birth of his sons Valentino and Matteo in 2008 was a life-changing event for Ricky Martin in many ways. Not only did he become a father, but it made him decide to reveal to the world that he's gay.

"The moment I sat down and held my children in my arms, I said enough is enough," the singer tells USA Today. "I need to tell the world what I'm about, my nature, because not doing so would be teaching my children how to lie. I didn't want it to be, 'At home, we're one thing, but when we go out, we're another.'"

Though he was worried about the response the news would get, he says reaction from fans, friends and family has been "beautiful."

"When my babies were born, my father said, 'Now it's time to come out!'" he reveals. "So imagine the support system that I had."

Ricky, 38, says that he'd always dreamed of having a family.

"I always saw myself as a father. I have amazing memories of moments I spent with my dad. To be quite honest, I didn't know it was going to be two (babies). ... Your priorities change. Even the way I drive is different. Once again, it's not about me anymore, now I know what unconditional love is."

The 'Livin' La Vida Loca' singer chronicles his life - including his childhood, fame and path to fatherhood - in his new memoir titled Me.

The personal comments from the "troll" over there is probably from a from "pal" of theirs. Sharing personal info is a no-no with online fandom because when shit hits the fan, then well you know.

There is a huge difference in maturity between 20 and 30.

A lot of the time, yes. But everyone is different, you can't generalize. Some people are more mature than their age would indicate, others never grow up. At almost 21, a lot of people are finished college, some are married, starting to build their own families and careers and lives.

That's been official for years now, lol. Ted knows he can't out Jake, but I think he felt like he was challenged when "Toothy" said he knew Ted wouldn't ever out him. So he takes every opportunity he can to make it obvious. And what does "career confidant" mean? One of Jake's PR people?

Ted made himself uncredible with many of his Toothy tales, like BT...puhlease! The only thing I tend to believe is him spying on Jaustin in that restaurant holding hands. C'est tout. Everything else is either made up or exaggerated, imo. I believe that whatever that was with Jaustin (relationship, affair, experiment) it's over and out.
There are many closeted bi or gay people in Hollywood, but Ted's totally fixated on Jake, like unhealthy even, imo.

Anonymous said...

I just can't believe Maggie is ok with this, his Mom yes.

Oh well, jake will probably marry someone one day, female of course. Oh well, its Taylor for now and wonder how long it will last. Maybe the attraction is that she is so busy with her career that she will not want to monopolize all this time. I can't believe "all the people" around him are ok with someone who can potentially hurt his reputation as a "good guy". But of course that could also backfire on her if she does because no one would be believe her anymore.

Thats a plus in this new romance, I don't think anyone will be buying her "poor me in love" songs anymore. She has overdid it.

DEMI Lovato’s relationship with Joe Jonas was a publicity stunt — but she wasn’t in on it — according to a shocking new report.

Sources say the Jonas Brothers rocker was approached by Disney publicists about the possibility of having him and Demi “date” in order to bring in ratings for Camp Rock 2.

“Demi had no idea that Joe was just using her” said one insider, “and when she found out that the whole relationship was “just for show she had a mental breakdown over everything.

What did I make up? I never said Jake was straight. To tell you the truth, I'd love for Jake to be a dad, I think he'd be a good one.... some day. But BT is just too ridiculous to be true. Jake also seems too immature right now and his current public, female compagnion has a little kid mentality too. Jake is not mature enough to be a father. Not yet.

Taylor Lautner reportedly dating Lily Collins

The pairing no one could've predicted...

The 'Twilight' actor is said to have been romancing the 21-year-old actress for "almost four months" after meeting on the set of their forthcoming movie 'Abduction'.

Since finishing the movie, Taylor is now working in Louisiana on 'Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn' and according to Us Weekly magazine, Lily "plans on hanging out there a lot."

The pair were first romantically linked in July, when it was reported the 18-year-old actor had seduced his co-star on the set of the film by "constantly flashing his shirtless six pack," despite her having a boyfriend.

A source said at the time: "Lily told pals that she wasn't looking to fall in love, but soon realised she had strong romantic feelings.

"Taylor was smitten from day one, but Lily let him know she was in a relationship with a stuntman who was working on a Steven Spielberg movie in New Mexico. When the boyfriend got suspicious because Lily didn't return calls promptly, he hopped a plane and turned up unannounced to confront her."

Interesting though, nobody on this blog has spoke about Ricky's comment about his coming out and a person's timing and him being Ready. "It's his life so he had to be ready". No one else. It was a spiritual thing he said, but he had to be ready. He also talked about some trying to pull people out of the closet and the bullying that takes place when a person (himself) may not be ready yet.
He said that IT IS WRONG. I agree.

Ah, such lofty words, 1:34PM. But somehow you found your way to this blog, lol. Must have been by accident ;) A couple things: Ricky specifically mentioned the Barbara Walters interview where she would not stop questioning him and he felt under attack. Jake has never had an interview like that. Also, no one "forced" Jake to give interviews where he spoke freely about things such as all guys being sexually attracted to another guy at some time, or the interview where he said he wouldn't mind if people thought of him as bi-sexual. He freely said those things. No one forced those words out of his mouth. Sorry, but Jake makes things harder on himself with his constant need for the spotlight to be on him. Despite his protests, he obviously loves being in the tabloids. No one gets involved in a "relationship" with Academy Award Winner Reese Witherspoon, sets ups tons of phony pap pics, and then gets in a "relationship" with the it girl of music, Taylor Swift, by accident. If you're trying to make people feel guilty, you're going to have to take your preaching somewhere else :)

Anonymous said...

Sorry 2:16. Those were Ricky's words, not mine. Are you aware that Ricky and a host of other stars have said that they were straight or not gay in interviews?
They do this because they are not ready to come out.
So what Ricky said to B. Walters and Jake said to some magazine is irrelevent, that's if Jake is gay.

Most gay people believe that it is a gay persons right, not the fans, to come out of the closet when he or she is ready. Besides trying to pull a famous person out of the closet just so some fan can say "see, he's one of us" is not the answer. You may have come out of the womb knowing and admitting that you were gay, but for most gay people that journey is different and takes time. Are you aware of this? Ricky explained his journey. Sure it would help the cause of gay people if all famous gay people came out, but it don't happen that way.

No, I'm not trying to make anyone feel guilty. Ricky has stated that he feels trying to pull someone out of the closet when they are (not ready) is a form of bullying. I agree with him. You may not.
Sorry, you just have to deal with it. Wonderful interview from Ricky.

Anonymous said...

Also, I found my way to the original WFT blog years ago. I was waiting for Toothy to come out as Bi or Gay, it does not matter.
And still don't.
I don't think it will be happening anytime soon. And I'm not mad.
And YOU?

Anonymous said...

No one is trying to pull Jake out of the closet. The issue is not his privacy, it's his public behavior and his manipulative ways. What has recently become even more disturbing is how reclusive and grim he appeared all summer long, after he tried to get everyone to go see PoP. Now, that he's trying to get people in the theater seats for LAOD and shipping his new apple pickin', ice cream lickin' "romance," he's all of sudden all smiles again.

Jake could easily just live his life in a glass closet, but he continues to push a heterosexual image as the only acceptable existence for a leading man in Hollywood. His a serial liar who evidently has little respect for his fans or himself.

You seem to be under the impression that the people on this blog have the power to try and pull Jake out of the closet. Newsflash: NO ONE THINKS THAT. So please get down off your high horse.

I doubt if Jake will ever come out, let alone anytime soon. So what? Of course I'm not mad about it. Why would I be mad? If anything, it's sad. You still don't see your hypocrisy - the original WFT was years ago and you're still here. Very odd if you think this blog is responsible for bullying anyone to come out of the closet. Looks like you think that if you repeatedly use the words "IF he's gay or bi" (IN CAPS!!) that it sets you apart from all the "bullies" who don't qualify everything they write the way you think they should. Apparently, you believe everyone should start all their posts with the words 'IF HE'S GAY OR BI...' LOL.

OSCAR: Vets Spotlight Strong Best Actor Field

After a 3-part series highlighting the 2010 Best Picture hopefuls and their realistic Oscar chances, I now turn to the acting races beginning with the men in contention for their lead performances. Of course there is always debate over what constitutes a leading vs supporting role and indeed the line does get blurred in some instances for competitive reasons. For instance, in 1991, Anthony Hopkins probably could have gone either way for his Hannibal Lecter in Silence Of The Lambs but went for lead and won. Conversely, after toying with a push for lead in 2005’s Syriana, George Clooney made the strategic switch to the less competitive supporting category and won. Interestingly, he faced off against Brokeback Mountain’s co-lead Jake Gyllenhaal who dropped down to supporting category in order to avoid facing off against his co-star Heath Ledger who was eventually nominated for lead actor. Over the course of this young awards season, there has been some buzz here and there about the category status of leading men like Wall Street: Money Never Sleep’s Michael Douglas, The Fighter’s Christian Bale, The Kings Speech’s Geoffrey Rush, Fair Game’s Sean Penn, and Another Year’s Jim Broadbent. All of them have now comfortably settled into supporting mode – at least in the eyes of the studios campaigning them. As far as the Academy is concerned, the ultimate decision will be up to the actors' peer group and that branch is always capable of surprise. Here is the rundown of those who remain firmly committed to going after the top prize for Best Actor In A Leading Role:

Pete Hammond, pt. 2 said...

COLIN FIRTH in THE KING’S SPEECH (The Weinstein Co) - As the stuttering King George VI, Firth faces a difficult language challenge that he flawlessly pulls off while delivering a 3-dimensional portrait of a man who overcomes all odds to lead his country in a time of war. OSCAR CHANCE: After getting his feet wet in the awards season game with his Oscar-nominated and BAFTA-winning performance in A Single Man, Firth seems ready to go for all the gold this time around. The fact that the movie is likely to be a frontrunner can only help his chances here. At this early stage, it could be Firth’s to lose.

JAMES FRANCO in 127 HOURS (Fox Searchlight) - As Aron Ralston, the extreme sports aficionado who cuts off his own arm when he winds up between a rock and a hard place, Franco is virtually never off screen and has the kind of tour-de-force role that makes people stand up and take notice. OSCAR CHANCE: Would seem a shoo-in for a nomination if queasy voters don’t pass out while watching their screeners (which keeps happening at the Industry screenings). Depending on the movie’s fate, Franco could be disarming competition on the final ballot, too.

ROBERT DUVALL in GET LOW (Sony Pictures Classics) - An Oscar winner in this category in 1983 for Tender Mercies, Duvall is an actor's actor who is back in a strong leading role and runs with it. If the performance can regain momentum from its summer opening, Duvall should be back in the game for the 7th time. OSCAR CHANCE: The film was a strong specialty success for Sony Pictures Classics which plans to go all out for their star. Duvall is on the circuit working it, too, so his Get Low chances seem high if he can keep the Big Mo going.

Pete Hammond, pt. 3 said...

JEFF BRIDGES in TRUE GRIT (Paramount) - Very few have yet seen the Coen Brothers take on this western classic but coming off his big Best Actor win for last year’s last minute stealth entry, Crazy Heart and back firmly in character mode Bridges’ interpretation of Rooster Cogburn may be well timed. OSCAR CHANCE: Only two other actors in history, Spencer Tracy and Tom Hanks, have been able to pull off back-to-back Best Actor wins but several have done the win/nomination combo and that may be what Bridges settles for here. John Wayne won the 1969 Best Actor prize for the original and no actor has managed the feat of duplicating an Oscar win by playing the same role in a remake.

LEONARDO DiCAPRIO in SHUTTER ISLAND (Paramount) and INCEPTION (Warner Bros) - To be or not to be, that is the question for Leo. To be nominated for Shutter Island , a February release or Inception, a July release or to be totally forgotten by actors with short memories. Both Leo studios are planning a big push and he’s got highly emotional moments in each but the big question is does he cancel himself out? OSCAR CHANCE: This guy is overdue but runs the risk of being completely overlooked because unfortunately he is really good in both. Shutter shows the wider range and Martin Scorsese directed him into a previous nomination for The Aviator so it’s probably the best bet if he just wants to get behind one pony in this race and avoid the split votes.

MARK WAHLBERG in THE FIGHTER (Paramount) - As ‘Irish’ Mickey Ward, Massachusettes native Wahlberg is jumping into the Oscar ring with another Boston-bred character in this emotional true life boxing story. His first nomination came in 2006 for supporting in another Boston-based project, The Departed so his home turf has been good to him. OSCAR CHANCE: The film is still largely a mystery but has nevertheless generated strong early buzz for co-stars Christian Bale,Amy Adams and Melissa Leo but they are all in support. Whether Wahlberg can carry the flag in the lead category against stiffer competition is a question which should begin to be answered once Paramount starts screenings in earnest next week.

Pete Hammond, pt 4 said...

BEN AFFLECK in THE TOWN (Warner Bros) - Affleck wrote and directed himself into his finest performance in years in this gritty crime drama also set in the Boston area. Another native using his hometown for inspiration , Affleck hit all the right notes in a film that has been one of the Fall’s big adult success stories. OSCAR CHANCE: The actors branch love fellow thesps who can do it all so they might want to reward Affleck with his first acting nod but it’s something of a long shot. He could get points though for suffering the slings and arrows of critics and coming back so strongly following the Eastwood model.

JESSE EISENBERG in THE SOCIAL NETWORK (Sony Pictures) - It certainly could be ‘the role he was born to play’. There hasn’t been a greater match between actor and role all year than watching Eisenberg come into his own playing the ever-so-complex Mark Zuckerberg. OSCAR CHANCE: With his adept handling of Aaron Sorkin’s dazzling dialogue, Eisenberg will no doubt impress fellow actors and it’s the kind of intelligent script young thesps are rarely handed. Despite usual reluctance to nominate actors in this age range in the Best Actor category , Eisenberg is a real contender.

JAVIER BARDEM in BIUTIFUL (Roadside Attractions) - Bardem won a supporting Oscar playing the essence of evil in 2007’s No Country For Old Men but in the Spanish language Biutiful he delivers a full stops-out turn of breathtaking force that took Cannes by storm and landed him the Best Actor prize. OSCAR CHANCE: Cannes isn’t always the best barometer for Oscars and Bardem has to overcome possible reluctance on the part of voters to endure such dark material . Foreign language turns are tougher to get into the race but this one may be irresistible. It’s his best work.

AARON ECKHART in RABBIT HOLE (LionsGate) - Based on the Pulitzer Prize and Tony winning Broadway play Rabbit Hole is a heartbreaking, sometimes oddly funny dissection of a married couple who try to survive the tragedy of losing their 4 year old son in an accident. Opposite Nicole Kidman , Eckhart has his best screen moments yet. OSCAR CHANCE: It’s a real actors’ vehicle. Many use scenes from the play for auditions and they should like what Eckhart does here. He could be a sleeper entry from this Toronto pickup and mid-December release.

Pete Hammond, pt 5 said...

MICHAEL DOUGLAS in SOLITARY MAN (Anchor Bay) - Released in May this small character-driven indie drama gave Douglas solidly unsympathetic material to play as an asshole down-on-his-luck used car dealer. Reviews for his performance were stellar but the film wasn’t widely seen. OSCAR CHANCE: The sympathy factor for his ongoing battle with Cancer aside, this role is a worthy contender and Anchor Bay was wise to get the screener out early so actors have been watching it already. Due to limited campaign money, this is another longshot but could be a real contender for a spot if it is able to up its profile and grab enough eyeballs.

RYAN GOSLING in BLUE VALENTINE (The Weinstein Co) - As a young husband trying to keep his crumbling marriage and family together Gosling opposite Michelle Williams is intense and memorable. Ever since its debut at Sundance critics have praised the raw acting and it’s probably catnip for the actors branch who have already nominated him once for the equally intense and low-budget Half-Nelson. OSCAR CHANCE: Gosling is going to win one day but maybe not for this currently NC-17 rated drama. A nomination however is entirely possible. His colleagues clearly admire the chances he takes.

KEVIN SPACEY in CASINO JACK (ATO) - A two time Oscar winner, Spacey is popular with his peers and here gets to give a full-bodied comic portrayal of disgraced lobbyist Jack Abramoff. The film gets an Oscar qualification run in December but sadly its 47 year old director George Hickenlooper didn’t live to see his hoped-for contender take flight. OSCAR CHANCE: Spacey delivers with a wry and funny Abramoff but the question remains whether enough people will even see it if this little indie gets outspent and drowned out in the year-end influx of screenings and screeners.

JAKE GYLLENHAAL in LOVE AND OTHER DRUGS (20th Century Fox) - Gyllenhaal has never been better or more appealing in this vibrant and sexy comedy where he is teamed opposite Anne Hathaway. OSCAR CHANCE: It could be perceived as too light and frothy to compete against some of the heavier contenders in the category. Gyllenhaal’s best shot will likely be at the Golden Globes in the Comedy or Musical category, but people will love the side of him he gets to show here and it could give him a real shot to win there.

Now, that he's trying to get people in the theater seats for LAOD and shipping his new apple pickin', ice cream lickin' "romance," he's all of sudden all smiles again.

LOL Wait a minute here. Jake is an actor. His job is, he acts. Yes he has fans, but people who go to movies go to see them because of the subject matter, interest in a number of things, not just the actor. If actors counted on just fans turning out to see his movies they would be in troulbe. If you no longer like his image, Then What on Earth are you here on this site for? Surely there are better actors and OUT actors out there for you to feel good about.

Jake could easily just live his life in a glass closet, but he continues to push a heterosexual image as the only acceptable existence for a leading man in Hollywood. His a serial liar who evidently has little respect for his fans or himself.

You don't have to watch or be a fan of his anymore if you don't agree or like what he is doing. Then why are you here? To criticize him endlessly?

3:45 Apparently CAPS bother you. You'll get over it. I like them.

Yes I do think some posters here unending tantrums of Jake is this, Jake is that because he has not come out as they wish, is a form of bullying, and apparently Ricky Martin feels that people who do this are bullys also.
If you can't see it and only do it for your entertainment then stop calling yourself a fan or those who claim to be fans, because what you are is more of a fan of Gay Jake, not Jake the person.

There is a difference.

So why get upset if he is not ready to come out and does what every in the closet gay or bi person does?

You have to either be patient or Move on. Stop the BULLYING.
It's not gonna make him come out any faster. OK

The Coming Out Cryers like to think that their busybody opinions don't make a difference, but it does turn off fans - I can't read about it anymore, it's like a long, drawn-out root canal with no anesthesia to even visit those blogs anymore. It should go without saying, what Ricky said - that a person has to come out when they are ready and in their own time.

Ah, Jake is being rewarded by the industry for his bearding/closeted ways. A friend of mine indicated that he thought that's why Maggie was nominated this past year because "she helps her little brother in small and big ways."

I saw LaOD and it was a B- film. Jake was certainly fine but his performance was not award worthy. This nonsense proves to me that Jake will be involved with Swyll for awhile. The old, "You scratch our back, we'll scratch yours."

4:11PM, Jake seems like he's basically a good person and I don't wish for bad things to happen to him. I always hope his movies do well, why wouldn't I? But I'm not going to fawn over him and I'm not going to pretend that I like stuff when I don't.

You seem to be confused though about what this blog is. But since you like caps, I'll use them :) THIS IS A 'JAKE IS GAY' BLOG. THE ENTIRE PREMISE OF THE BLOG IS BUILT AROUND THE BELIEF THAT JAKE IS GAY. IT IS NOT IHJ, IT IS NOT WDW, IT IS NOT GYLLENBABBLE. IT IS NOT THE DC FORUM. THERE ARE A WIDE VARIETY OF VIEWPOINTS EXPRESSED ON THIS BLOG. Some people are Jake "fans" who drool over him. Some people think it's interesting to watch what he will do next. Some people like him but aren't afraid to criticize him. Some people are indifferent to him. So different people are here for different reasons. This bothers you, but that's no one's problem but your own. I'm not mad or upset, but you sure seem to be bothered by what goes on here since you won't stop preaching. Maybe you should "move on" from lecturing people :)

No one from this blog has ever given concrete proof that there is a chance Jake is gay. And please don't say bearding with Reese or the fauxmance. Straight people in HW doing it all the time. And don't use Ted's Toothy because Jake is the only one that hasn't been notted, maybe because Ted knows he's has people believing its Jake. ANd not the DL BS.

ANd before you ask, yes I can prove Jake is straight better than you can prove he's gay. He has dated, lived and had sex with women including Kirsten. There is not one shred of tangible proof that Jake is gay. My proof that he is straight totally blows your wishing away. Just one piece of proof and the LA Laker game with Austin, it was clear they were joking, just give me something. A picture, an old boyfriend or a first hand account of Jake romantically involved with a man.

I don't believe Reese and Jake were ever going to get married and that 80% of it was for PR but that doesn't mean he's gay. SHowmances are not about sexuality but publicity.

LAOD review from imdb:

"I saw this movie last night at a preview. I am giving it 2 stars because the first 30 minutes brought me a few laughs and getting to look at hot Jake counts for something. But the story was SO predictable, I could have written the script with my eyes closed! I have seen this same story 1000 times before. It is a formula that tries to rise about the pack by tackling "big" issues like the pharmaceutical companies but it never does. The last 1/2 of the movie was so boring and predictable and uninteresting. I would not recommend anyone pay money to go see it in theaters and honestly, I can't even recommend it when it comes out on DVD."

Jake Gyllenhaal Talks Getting 'Dirty' on Camera

"The Insider" was the only show to gain access inside the world premiere of 'Love and Other Drugs' and Jake Gyllenhaal dished to our Lara Spencer about his "dedication" to his character as a philandering Viagra salesman.

"Viagra… did you do research for the role?" Lara asked Jake on Thursday.

"Not so much Viagra, but the movie has a lot of sex in it and it was very important, always, to practice," Jake quipped.

The actor has been photographed out with Grammy winner Taylor Swift, but he turned shy when Lara quizzed him on his dating situation, joking that he brought his publicist as his date.

Jake was more open talking about his big screen romances: "I've always tried to be really respectful," Jake told Lara. "I know that if you're respectful off camera, then you can kind of get dirty on camera."

'Love and Other Drugs' hits theaters November 24.

To people who have seen LAOD, Jake said in Esquire that he considers LAOD to be the child of Brokeback Mountain? What do you think?

A bizarre statement. Because he and Anne are in both, it makes LAOD the "child" of BBM? I don't get that. The two movies could not be more different and aside from the two actors, I don't see any connection. BBM was a masterpiece, an artistic vision brought to life, a rare movie that stands above and apart. There was nothing typical or cliche about it.

Re. child comment. I think Jake meant that w/o BBM he and Annie wouldn't be in this movie together. I think them being in BBM was sort of a screen chemistry test for Zwick. I always thought that next to Heath, he had best chemistry with Anne (even though they shared little time on screen) out of all co-stars. They are good friends, you can tell.

Kris, it will be very interesting if Hathaway gets incredible press reviews ( she is already getting good test screening reviews) bumping ( or equaling) Natalie Portman and Annette Bening, plus great box -office success for “Love And Other Drugs”. This would make a a very interesting Best Actress Oscar race- even more fascinating.

P.S. If this film becomes critically acclaimed with good box-office , 20th Century Fox was smart not to release this movie at Cannes, Venice, or TIFF- because of too much competition and a proper ” wait and see ” approach.

I can’t see this doing that well at the box office. $50-$60 mil tops. Of course, everything is relative and that figure is probably slightly less than what the 5 films currently in Kris’s Best Actress slate will gross combined.

I actually think that anne has less chances to get a nomination than jake because she belongs to a tough category in this years race. Not much to say about Gyllenhaal’s performance. His character makes some far-fetched emotional leaps within the narrative. While that’s mostly a writing issue, he doesn’t really do anything to help. Hathaway is much better, but again, the movie’s so bad it’s hard to really appreciate her performance.

That description sounds about right. It’s just too comedic in some areas, too heavy in others. It comes off as almost disrespectful…

Re. Franco - I think James should be happy to work in Hollywood. He's so rich now and can afford to buy himself into good schools. Maybe his career will always be as great and he can be "whatever" about it and skip premiers etc. Other actors are very appreciative for their opportunities. It's just a little lucky percentage who breaks through in Hollywood and there are many, many talented, charismatic actors who want to make it big in Hollywood. It's more or less easy work and you get shitload of cash. I'd be grateful, I really would.

I agree with another post that showmances are not just about sexuality or hiding ones, but more about publicity for the stars. Straight or Gay. It's mostly about PR / Publicity for the stars. All of the stars do this at some points in their careers, or most do. Not just Jake.
