Dear Ted: Since Toothy's and Grey's careers aren't doing so well, any chance that coming out would improve their lot—maybe make people want to see them more since they would be less boring if they were gay and acting straight? —S
Dear Talk on Town: T2 and G2 may get a whole lot of tabloid buzz if they come out, but both of the dudes are still totally terrified they won't get the roles they want if studio types know they're gay—especially Toothy, who loves his heartthrob status.
Dear Ted: Are two of your favorite gay B.V.s, Crescent Kumquat and Judas Jack-Off, native of the same geographical area? And why do Toothy Tile and Grey Goose have couples issues? Toothy dropped/was dropped by his beard and seems happy about it; Grey only use his fag-hag for red carpet events and very rare paparazzi pictures. They're both working as usual, so it should be like their second honeymoon phase instead of the "Is it your CD or mine?" moment. —A
Dear Blinded by the Slight: Just like with straight couples, gay couples suffer from competitive careeritis, too. As is the case with Tooth 'n' Grey. And no to the geo query.
Dear Ted: Don't know if you're up for rescue cats as well as dogs, but I have three of them and volunteer one day a week for a local no-kill shelter. My question: Is Toothy Tile George Clooney? I'm sure he's gay, and he always looks unhappy in photos with his "dates." —Icarus
Dear Cat Lady: I've got love for all rescue pets, but G.C. is not T2. but maybe George should bring his flask to more outings, because he looked rather smiley at the Oscars.
A man in heat can look perilously close to a killer on the make and you don't want to mistake aggression for interest, not with that kind of intensity on the loose.
Works for straights, too. Fantastic article, Jackie. :)
Yes, great article, Jackie. On the Dr Oz show yesterday there was a segment about intuition, what it is and that a big part of it really is paying attention to small details and how our brain instantly compares those details to hidden past experiences and memories and how it's an instinctive quality for survival. After reading this article it seems gaydar might be part of the brain's intuition area, and I wonder if it is, is it learned or inborn? Interesting.
So you think you can spot a gay in the wild? Oh really! Because according to the New York Post, male sexual ambiguity is rendering mere mortals incapable of such callous judgmental accuracy. What exactly is this world coming to?!
Every few months it seems as though one or both of the New York City tabloids repackage this identical story — the lines are being blurred between what a straight man is and what a gay man is, blah blah blah — but this appears to be the first time that either one of them has gone all out and just flat-out declared gaydar to be dead.
The Post's Danica Lo laments:
From the sleekly coiffed power players on "Mad Men" to socialite-seducing lothario fashion designers, baseball player-branded perfume and hockey players interning at Vogue, it's getting harder to tell, on first impressions, whether a man would rather make out with you — or your brother.
In today's post-metro social consciousness, boys will still be boys — just more sensitive and stuff. A generation raised on therapy, teen flicks, reality TV and emoticons (it's hard to be butch and Twitter at the same time, you know?) has embraced the freedom of sexual ambiguity.
This maddening confusion leads Lo to the obvious(?) conclusion:
RIP, gaydar, we'll miss how you kept us from winking at the other team.
All of this leads one to wonder: what's wrong with just asking a guy if he's gay or straight? Lo mentions that doing such a thing is "awkward," but if a straight guy is comfortable with his sexuality, he won't mind being asked. In fact, he may even be flattered, and the same thing probably applies for the gays. And if the guy happens to freak out over having his sexuality questioned, then screw him, he isn't worth your time. So there, problem solved, right? Well, probably not, but it was worth a half-assed try.

In modern times (or in a more perfect world!), hopefully if men are more comfortable with their sexuality, it won't matter as much - but I can definitely see gay intuition being necessary for survival, and finding someone, especially in years past. People have so much in common. :(
Okay, I might get into serious trouble with this, but I've been asked dozens of times how you can tell a gay man or woman from his/her straight counterparts. ('Straight' means 'heterosexual' in modern gay parlance)
Some are obvious (I mean, do you need my help to know Richard Simmons and k.d. lang are gay?). But most are a bit more subtle, and it isn't usually a matter of how much product they use in their hair, or how much they follow professional sports, that really matter.
Some have said it's a sense that's difficult to describe, and I guess it is. However, I've distilled the following clues from my *years* (ahem!) of experience:
(Take it for all it's worth--I'm just having fun here)
#1) The walk Gay men take short strides. It's true. Gay men walk like geishas wearing wooden sandals. Straight men, on the other hand, look like they're trying to compete in the long jump, extra slowly--very long strides.
Lesbians walk like straight men. A definite swagger. There's a reason there's a saying in the lesbian community: "If it talks like a dyke and it walks like a dyke, then it probably is a dyke."
#2) Awareness of people around them Gay men need to look at every other person in sight. When in public, gay men are continually distracted by other people. It's almost comical (being so utterly predictable) when you walk in a restaurant or a shop, and all the gay men will whip their heads around to look at you. It's in our DNA, completely instinctive. Meanwhile...
Lesbians couldn't care less. Butch lesbians, in particular, are too concerned with their gadgets--they, like straight men, adore PDAs, CBs, BBs, and every other mechanical acronym out there. If it weren't for lesbians, the Radio Shack and hardware stores in the Castro and West Village would go out of business. (Restoration Hardware, on the other hand, is a favorite among gay men)
#3) Names Gay men dislike nicknames. Gay men want their name as long and formal sounding as possible, like they really want to reclaim the name their mothers called them when they were angry. It's much rarer to meet a gay Chris than a Christopher, for instance. It's never "Tom", it's "Thomas". And forget calling a gay man "Andy"--it's "Andrew", or, even better yet, "Andrew Michael".
Conversely, lesbians will shorten their names to the most masculine sounding nickname possible. "Christine" is always "Chris", "Leslie" is "Les", and "Georgia" always ends up as "George" (no, I'm not kidding). If the name is impossible to shorten to a masculine-sounding nickname, like Jennifer or Virginia, then it's just a single letter: "J" and "V".
#4) Clothing fit Gay men will wear it as tight as possible. For some odd reason, gay men are as obsessed with their pant size as straight women are with their clothing size. The difference between a 32 and a 34 presents as big a self-esteem issue for gay men (and, apparently, Jerry Seinfeld) as a 6 and an 8 does for a straight woman. It's not unusual to see a gay man stuffing his flabby frame into a too-tight size 32 jeans just so he can brag about wearing that size.
Lesbians, like straight men, like baggy and loose. Really butch lesbians will wear shirts as loose as possible in order to give the semblance of breastlessness (especially among those trying to look like 14-year-old skateboarders). Most of the butch lesbian women I know exclusively shop at the men's department, and that includes underwear (they prefer boxers).
#5) Music preferences Gay men: bubble-gum Europop. Or House. Or Techno. No substitutions or exchanges. Gay men love Kylie Minogue, Robbie Williams, and Groove Armada. Unless you're a gay man or a European, you've probably never heard of them.
Lesbians love Country. Or Heavy Metal. Or Folk Rock. No substitutions or exchanges. Lesbians love anyone who has played at the Michigan Womyn's Music Festival. No one else even wants to go to Michigan.
#6) Smiling too much or not at all in pictures Gay men grin from ear to ear in pictures. In an attempt to show as many of their pearly whites on celluloid (or memory sticks), gay men instinctively smile as widely as possible when their picture is being taken.
Lesbians, on the other hand, usually snarl. Maybe a pout. Maybe a threatening glare. But never a smile. Never. (Except the femmes)
"Sometimes you just know. This happened 3 times when I was watching three actors that I later learned were gay or who came out years later. The first time was in the movie, "Pillow Talk" when Rock Hudson and Doris Day were, well laying on a pillow talking and he was hitting on her and suddenly it hit me, he was mouthing those words he had no idea what it was like to love or have sex with a woman.
The second time, similiar situation, except, this time it was Mr. Brady and Mrs. Brady sitting up in bed reading books. Mr. Brady starts hitting on Mrs. Brady. Again mouthing the words. He wouldn't know pu$$y if it walked up to him and smacked him in the face (Do I have to say "The Brady Bunch"?) Again, years before he came out. Last one was that character on Frazier that was supposed to be a big woman chaser. I forget the character's name (Bulldog?), but the actor is short, bald. He's over at Frasier's apartment supposedly salivating over some woman and bam, it hits me. He doesn't know anything about pu$$y either.
It was weird I suddenly got the impression they were saying the words in the script phonetically like they had no clue how to talk to or about women."
"Hmmm....Lol...As a REAL GAY MAN, I think ur Gaydar line-up though very nice for looking up whilst ur bored and sipping a Cuppa, has ABSOLUTELY MISSED THE MARK, Honey...lol
As a Gay man, am extremely straight-acting, so much so that my mates often think i have an eye for chatting up the girls...Livelonger, this is what we gay men call wearing a beard! And believe me Most gay men wear beards so well that it wud be ludicrous to propose one is gay just by merely watching him take short-strides on the street...Bullocks, matey!
Am a stocky-chubby lad, very masculine looking, I swagger with the sway of a bodyguard - some of me mates actually call my walks soldierly!
I hate attention...I have a cute arse, but wud rather wear nice baggy/airy clothes to deflect any unnecessary attention from any part of my anatomy...lol
My name's Antonio, but I believe it shows some sort o term of endearment if a mate of mine calls me Tony...I wud even prefer it! Antonio Alexander Graham Edward North? Oh, please - How Posh!
Am very hairy, and i know a host of gay men who prefer their men with a hairy body, a moustache or goatie, wit a cockney accent that goes, "Fackin' 'ell!"
However, I will give u credit on our general taste in Music - Apparently Dance, Hip/hop, RnB...Including House/Techno/Trance are a gay forte....My DAB Walkman is always tuned to Kiss FM...I go crazy over BootyLuv, Groove Armada, Her Majesties Madonna, Kylie, and Beyonce and any Single that has a Dance Remix 2 back it up....Still, I do a very serious collection of records that would include Wycleff Jean, U2, Cranberries, Lauryn Hill, Tracy Chapman, Alanis Morisette, The Foo-Fighters, Sheryll Crow, Lenny Kravitz, the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, Will Smith, the Notorios B.IG.,Tupac Shakur....so u see, even a gay man's musical tastes can be quite eclectic!
Point is, the only way u can tell if a man is truly gay is if he:
1) Has the words or any other acronymn alluding to the term G-A-Y written across his tight pink tshirt;
2) Lisps like a duck and says, "Bless, I need a cuppa Darling - am spittin' feathers!"
3) Stares at u like sum sex-starved maniac for hours as u sit across him in the train like he had never sen your specie before.
Oh, yes...and if he insists on kissing you on both side of your cheeks while keeping his wrists limp....

"Don't you just wanna get Matt Bomer and mess him up?" [silence] "...well I know I do. I bet he messes up good." -My mum on Matt Bomer. 12:42 AM Mar 17th
There's no question that the concept of gaydar can be stereotypical - and that's why I used to dismiss it. I thought that people put too much significance on the superficial; dress, musical tastes, mannerisms, etc. I think it's more of an intuition, and doesn't depend on any of those things.
This article made me rethink it - everybody has intuition of some kind. Plus, the author's last name is Ledger, who wouldn't love that? I hope he writes more. :)

Very interesting article Jackie, thanks for posting it.
Austin is probably proud and happy for Jake's career, but I think it would only be natural for Austin to wish he had the same kind of career or more success. We're talking about a business where there is a very finite number of roles, and not that many people make it. I think people also tend to have the kind of personalities that thrive on attention (Jake certainly does), and you see jealously even in straight couple who would never compete for the same roles.
I don't think it doesn't mean you don't really love or care for your partner. No relationship is perfect or free of its messes or need to work at it to make it last. The real key is whether a couple is willing to work on its issues.
Some are not. I remember in his bio Tab Hunter talked about his relationship with Tony Perkins breaking up in part because he was jealous of the roles Perkins got.
Austin is probably proud and happy for Jake's career, but I think it would only be natural for Austin to wish he had the same kind of career or more success.
Wishing and working for a better career is natural and expected. True love isn't selfish so being jealous over career and money is a bad sign.
This article reminds me of Michaelangelo - and we all know his appreciation for male beauty. I thought I had read something recently about love letters between M and another man. Very beautiful. :)
When Michelangelo was in his late fifties he fell in love with a beautiful young noble in his early twenties named Tommaso de’ Cavalieri. He sent Tommaso drawings and dedicated passionate poems to him. With ups and downs their relationship lasted the rest of Michelangelo’s life; and when Michelangelo died years later, Tommaso was at his bedside.
Once, not long after they met, Tommaso wrote to Michelangelo to ask why he had not written for so long: could it be that Michelangelo had forgotten him? Michelangelo replied that he thought he had convinced Tommaso of his “boundless love”:
“……Perhaps you [said] this to try me or to rekindle a greater flame in me, if it were possible. Whichever it is, I know for sure that I’ll forget your name the day I forget the food I live on; in fact, I could sooner forget my food, which…. nourishes only the body, than your name, which nourishes body and soul, and fills both with such sweetness that I can feel no pain nor fear of death while my mind remembers it. Imagine how happy I would be if my eye also had its share.” [unsigned]
Ted didn’t say that Grey Goose is jealous of Toothy’s career. He didn’t say that it was an issue with one of them, he said that BOTH are dealing with career tensions. I think that the career tensions between Jake and Austin are not related to the different levels in their careers because it’s nothing new. It’s been like this for a long time and they are both used to it. I think it has to do more with how to deal with the closet and the struggle to get the roles they want like the first question hints about being terrified of producers knowing they are gay, and frustration for having certain career expectations that weren't achieved. They must be going through a lot of work related stress with PoP about to be released and Austin figuring out his next project. It’s natural that it will create tensions if they are stressed. Every couple deals with this kind of issues. If they made it this far with everything against them and survived the Hollywood pressure then I am sure they’ll sort out this too and remain together.

Here's hoping! Having a blockbuster coming out must be tremendously stressful - I hope things work out well, for everything.
Chan says: My gaydar goes off for Joseph Gordon-Levitt. (Kid from Third Rock from the Sun, and the movies Brick, Latter Days, Manic, and Havoc) Anyone else?
OMG, Chan! Absolutely! There was a magazine spread recently (Vanity Fair I think) where he was posed in some very suggestive pix with Claudia Schiffer. She was smokin hot...made up to resemble Brigitte Bardot. He looked like he would rather be anywhere else. My gaydar went off right away.
One of my new favorite bands is Vampire Weekend – yes, totally jumping on that band wagon along with everyone else. I’m really digging the bands’ North East collegiate style (they went to Emerson in Boston). The 70’s tennis outfits in their ‘Giving Up The Gun’ music video are really classic, especially the one Jake Gyllenhaal sports with the blue Sambas. It reminds me of my parents playing tennis seriously back in the day (my mum competed at Boston University) in their little white tennis polos, skirts and shorts and striped sports bands on wrists and foreheads.
True love isn't selfish so being jealous over career and money is a bad sign.
?? This seems to be a rather extreme extrapolation of some speculation about competitiveness. As was noted in another comment, being competitive isn't the same as being jealous. For instance, Jake has made the comment that he and Maggie have always been competitive career-wise. Doesn't mean they are jealous of each other or that they don't love each other or that anyone is being selfish.
About the gaydar. I have an acquaintance who was recently interviewed on national TV. It was so funny seeing him because he came off as gay! If I had never seen or heard him before, based on what he looked like and how he talked I never would have thought he was straight. However he is, married (twice) and believe me, I know him well enough to know, and no he is not closeted. My gay friends and I were laughing about it, how he's so pretty on TV but so straight in real life! So sometimes gaydar is reliable but other times, no.
"When I first moved to LA, I lived out the tv show 3's Company, except I was a straight man who shared a house with 2 gay men, one out, and one in the closet. Well, his bedroom was bigger than a closet, in fact he had the master suite, but-
Anyway, I partied with these gentlemen a lot (and I highly highly recommend it!) and everywhere we went, everyone knew I was straight, one was out and one was hiding (at least in the West Hollywood haunts we haunted). I could dance in the middle of the dance floor by myself or with a roomie, and dress in a similiar black shirt, blue jeans combo, but somehow, I was always "in-ed".
Now I know that I was giving off subtle vibrations. I called it moving to the beat, and never listned when people told me I can' t dance. Who knew I was broadcasting?"
It's largely the eyes that give it away. Lingering a second too long at a another male or not looking at female bodies. Straight men can't help themselves, they check women out instinctively. Gay men don't. The closeted gay male may think he is fooling people, but he's not. At least not to the observant. They can't pull off the charade 100% of the time. There are always slip ups. Remember the cute guy in the park in Paris. Jake's body reacted instantly.
JAKE JUMPING OUT OF A MOVING TRAIN? What the hell would that look like? Well, luckily I have a 7 year old illustrator to hand for situations like this, after entering a trance and channelling residual vision of the events from Duncan’s eyes, via touching the tweet, we have this.
Pretty convincing I think you will agree, although I am a bit concerned about the exploding body bits. If you are reading this Duncan, maybe you would care to comment on what, at the moment, is kinda made up?
joyy_pitter: The people over at the Austin Nichols Live Journal are so anti-Sophia, it's not even funny. I've stopped visiting it because of it. about 13 hours ago
5:38 PM, if you are going to sell bullshit about Jake liking girls that way, you shouldn't use the example where Jake looks blank and totally disinterested.
Matt Damon tells The Hollywood Reporter, "Somebody said to me recently, 'Wow, you really love marriage,' and I said, 'No, I think marriage is ridiculous; I think it's a totally ridiculous idea.' I love being married to my wife - she's the best thing that ever happened to me, but if she ever left me, I wouldn't do it again. Because it's crazy - to spend your life with one person and not be totally driven crazy."
Matt Damon is an idiot. He wanted to give a non-traditional,smart ass remark about marriage and in the middle of it he realized how inapropiate it would sound to his wife.
"All my friends were female – all the troublemakers. Maybe because my mother was a bit under my dad's thumb, any kind of wild woman fascinated me. I loved them, just as I loved seeing Shirley Bassey on telly. I was amazed by her and Joan Collins. I found strong, glamorous women inspiring."
In pilot drag, Qantas spokesperson John Travolta struts the tarmac in Melbourne. He's there for the Formula One Grand Prix, where he will wave the checkered flag that starts the race.
That tweet about Austin Media is so stupid. Spooky puts up all the photos of Austin with Sophia, and nobody is anti-Sophia over there, it's just that nobody is that interested in her so they don't talk about her.

Is Our Obsession With 'Straight-Acting' Guys Perverse (And Really Harmful)?March 28, 2010 10:35 am
Little girls who act like boys are known as tomboys. Little boys who act like girls are known as faggots. My friend Charles and I were faggots at eight years-old. He was constantly reprimanded by teachers for screaming like a girl at recess. He could reach Mariah Carey ear-bloodying pitches. If he has transitioned to a female I would not be surprised—look me up on Facebook, girl! My mother grew up in Texas, the only girl among two football-playing brothers and an ex-military father. As a child, I was probably the gayest person she had ever met. She struggled with wanting me to be happy, wanting to protect me, and probably being embarrassed my effeminate behavior. She allowed me to have the movie, Grease, as my Bar-Mitzvah party theme (complete with larger-than-life cutouts of the Pink Ladies) Oh, and she would tap my wrists to let me know when they were limp.
Charles and I were at my house, busy dressing up, satiating our repressed femininity like a stoner munching out on Cool Ranch Doritos. Sashaying to a Pointer Sisters cassette tape, my mother knocked on the door. I frantically threw a sweatshirt on over my dress, struggling to get into a pair of sweatpants but like all dramatic stories, it was too late. She barged in and caught us with our dresses down, so to speak.
She yanked my ass downstairs and into her Laura Ashley-clad bedroom. Sitting on the edge of her bed, naked except for a bathrobe and one roller in the front of her hair, she slapped me in the face. It wasn’t an angry slap; it was a panicked slap. Then she cried and made me an appointment with a psychologist.
A (former) friend of mine once advised me that if I wanted to get a date, I should “tone it down.” “Don’t tell them you love Belinda Carlisle’s vibrato, Bette Davis’ staccato, and the girls of The Facts of Life—not on the first date.” Do I have to trick someone into tolerating my femme qualities? Fuck that.
Is Our Obsession With 'Straight-Acting' Guys Perverse (And Really Harmful)?March 28, 2010 10:39 am
For a college course, I combed through the Village Voice's male-for-male personal ads from 1970-2000 seeking trends in gay men’s ideals of attractiveness. The one constant across the 30-year period was the long-standing “No Fats, No Femmes” sentiment. Although my research is far from scientific I find personal ads to be a reasonable litmus test on this subject especially when they are easily accessible and free.
Scanning the pages of Los Angeles m4m listings, the same words keep popping up: regular, normal, straight, frat, ex-frat, bi, straight-acting, discreet, and married. I’m sure many of these men are married—to other men.
Anyone looking for a queen? Let’s see. Keyword search: femme. In the past seven days, 14 ads are posted containing the word “femme.” Five specify no femmes. Out of the nine pro-femme ads, I am ineligible for my favorite: “Michelle Kwan roleplay for cute asian.” Curses.
The word “discreet” comes up in over one thousand postings. It is the new “straight-acting.” There are two spellings of the word “discreet.” The other spelling, “discrete,” means distinct, separate, and individual. That is the antithesis of what these Craigslisters want in a man. Discrete’s double-E’d sister is marked by modesty and prudence—two of my least favorite words. “Wise self-restraint,” the second definition of “discreet,” is most applicable to the performance of straight-acting.
When I attempt to be straight-acting, whether it is for a laugh or to rapidly attain meaningless sex, I suspend all movement. Gone are the gesticulations, the rubber-faces, or the rolling of eyeballs. They are replaced with—well—nothing. Speaking in a low monotone, any semblance of personality evaporates. To be discreet, less is more.
Straightacting.com became well-known in 2000 for its “famous Straight-Acting Quiz.” Multiple choice questions determine your level of straight-actingness. Or lack thereof. Questions range from how much you enjoy receiving flowers and the frequency you say “pee-pee” instead of penis, to how publicly affectionate you're willing to be with your partner in a “non-gay environment.” Upon my arrival, any environment turns gay.
A Level 2 (Very Straight Acting) person is described as having “carefully crafted” actions “in a way that they never appear to be considered too fem.” This is the very essence of straight-acting: the utter calculation of every movement, every word that comes out of your discreetly dick-eating mouth. Kooky Level 6s, on the other hand, enjoy exploring their feminine side. “Most people just assume you are gay…which is just fine with you.” But not fine with the creators and patrons of this site who hold faux masculinity in the highest regard.
The intelligentsia behind StraightActing.com chalk up their penchant for straight-acting men to simple preference: “Just as people have preferences for the type of guys they like, for example, ‘Tall men,’ many of us have a preference for ‘straight acting’ men—Men that (sic) have very few effeminate traits but still like to get down with other men.” Get down with other men? Is that some demented idea of how masculine men speak? Cue effeminate eye-rolling. More importantly, their glorification of straight-acting is not preference, it is bias.
For the men of StraightActing.com and the allegedly married-to-women, bisexual, ex-frat boys of Craigslist, I empathize with you. I get it. I hope for both you and me that we can expand our ideals of beauty and evolve into a state of self love. Here’s to becoming more discrete.

Will Forte on kissing James Franco: “I delivered to him the appropriate amount of return tongue.”March 28, 2010 11:37 am
First Sean Penn got to make out with James Franco in Milk. But their kissing scenes were mild compared to the tonsil hockey Franco played with Will Forte during a sketch on Saturday Night Live where the men played members of a family that had no problem with being affectionate with each other. Forte, in an interview with Elle, talked about kissing Franco:
Elle: Describe your gayest moment that didn’t involve knitting needles. WF: When I had my tongue down James Franco’s throat.
Elle: Oh, yes. You played the grandfather in that overaffectionate family sketch. WF: I found out we’d be doing it the day of the show. I knew James a little because he’d hosted before, so it wasn’t super uncomfortable. So I said, “I guess we’ll be kissing. Let’s really go to town. But we’ll just pretend in rehearsal.” But even in rehearsal he threw his tongue in I was like, Oh my God! I thought we were going to save it for the show! Then, during the dress rehearsal, I’m pretty sure there was more of his tongue inside my mouth than there was inside his.
Elle: So how did you react to having a mouthful of Franco? WF: I delivered to him the appropriate amount of return tongue. Kissing is a give-and-take game. I gave a little and I took a little.

I was on one of the OTH forums and saw something that just about made me fall out of seat: a manipulation of one of the Lakers photos with Sophia inserted in Jake's place.
I didn't know whether to be mad, or to laugh at the fact that I guess the person who made it agrees about what kind of emotion Austin is showing on his face.
I have no idea how to make manipulations, otherwise I think I'd have to make some up inserting Jake in Sophia's place.

All you have to do is learn how to use Photoshop - not an easy task! :) But why would you bother with inserting Jake in Sophia's place when Austin and Sophia have no chemistry? Unless you meant Brooke and Julian pictures?
I was on one of the OTH forums and saw something that just about made me fall out of seat: a manipulation of one of the Lakers photos with Sophia inserted in Jake's place.
Just saw it at a screening in Orange County. It was much much better than I expected going it. I was expecting something good from Ed Zwick and Anne Hathaway but Jake Gyllenhal really tore it up. This movie is very, very good and will be a huge hit commercially and critically when it comes out. I will say it is long. It has the perfect mix of gross out comedy, serious dramatics, and emotionally connecting love story. The film is really stuck in my head since i saw it. I go and see as many films as I can, and have seen many but this was a fantastic DRom Com. It was parts of Knocked Up, Funny People, and 500 Days of Summer, but with some Up in the Air and Thank You for Smoking and genuine Julia Roberts love story territory. But I must say, as a 20 year old guy, it was very goddamn good.
Anne Hathaway was very convincing with her Parkinson's. The film does a great job with teaching the audience both about Parkinson's and (legitimate) Pharmaceuticals sales. She is stage 1 and acts the part. She is a rebel girl and does a great job. She is EXTREMELY sexy in this movie and this will probably get her voted #1 Sexiest woman in every magazine on earth next year. Brave girl and completely sexy and tasteful...most of the time.
This is absolutely, hands down the best role Jake Gyllenhal has ever played. He might have been dramatic and gay in Brokeback but he is so comfortable as the smooth talking, answer for everything, sex seeking Jamie it really shocked me. I actually have faith he will be good in Prince of Persia after seeing his range in this. He is the cocky part of Thank You For Smoking, with better and more prolific dialogue, but the heartwarming lead of 500 Days of Summer, but with even more redeeming qualities.
The movie was laugh out loud funny the entire film. It never let the film get too serious without a few laughs or the characters making a few jokes about the drama. Supporting characters were great. Oliver Platt played a great typical Oliver Platt role but with great writing and no restraint. Judy Greer was cute and bitchy Judy Greer. Hank Azaria was also quite memorable and hilarious as a womanizing doctor. Jamie's brother is definitely a Jonah Hill type/looking guy but as the movie goes on you can't help but like him. He is in some of the best scenes in the film.
The chemistry is off the charts between Jake and Anne which is obvious but the other characters do a fantastic job standing out as well. I have seen a lot of films and enjoy good films of all genres but this might be the best Romantic Dramedy I have ever seen.
A hilarious, sexy, and romantic dramedy packed full of all the necessities

Jake Gyllenhaal and Anne Hathaway lead a great cast of regulars (including Hank Azaria and Oliver Platt) in 'Love and Other Drugs,' the story of a promiscuous and ambitious pharmaceutical salesman (Gyllenhaal) getting his start in the Ohio market with his (and his mentor's) sights set on the big game in Chicago. His life is turned sideways when he meets the beautiful Maggie (Anne Hathaway), an artist with stage-one Parkinson's and a growing skepticism for love. Throw in a raunchily pathetic younger brother (Josh Gad), a hilarious sales partner (Oliver Platt), and a violent former Marine (Gabriel Macht) as the #1 competition, and 'Love and Other Drugs' quickly becomes one of the funniest films in years.
The film, which is like 'Up in the Air' with more humour or '(500) Days of Summer' with less quirk, is fantastically acted by the leads and supporting ensemble of familiar faces. The writing is phenomenal with some of the freshest dialogue and wittiest banter I've seen since Howard Hawks's 'His Girl Friday.' The story is also very topical, especially in the days of the fight for healthcare reform. Director Edward Zwick (Glory, Blood Diamond) puts forth one of the best films of his career alongside a list of solid past work, creating some of the most heart-wrenchingly sad and gut-wrenchingly funny cinematic moments in years. The film is also full of some of the hottest and funniest sex scenes I've seen in a long time, so the movie's humour isn't all guys will want in this romantic-comedy. Overall, 'Love and Other Drugs' is a great variation to the 2010 romantic comedies thus far, giving something worthwhile outside of the typical 'The Bounty Hounter'-type rom-coms.
Good manip is hard to make and this one is great :)
Jake and Heath
That's such a great, real looking manip. The real pics are: Jake with Drunkst and Heath with Michelle. But the manip is 100x better than the real ones. :D
I really don't understand what people mean about "chemistry". IMO, Jake and Kirsten had a lot of it together but probably they were in a fake relationship. Heath and Michelle were really in love, apparently, but i don't see any chemistry between them not even in their "happy" days.
Jake & Heath had TONS of chemistry but is not very likely that they ever slept together. I don't see any sparks between Austin and Jake but I'm almost sure that they were romantically involved in the past.
Since the topic of gaydar was discussed here, i admit i have a problem with identify "chemistry" as well.
Interesting interview with Jake (for Brothers). He talks about competition, meditation, etc
Q: Having interviewed you several times over the years, you seem more at ease with yourself nowadays? A: Yes, I do feel that. I think that’s part of growing up. A lot of things happened in my life while I was making this movie, and it made me think that we never know what’s going to happen in the future. All we have is right now, so what do you have to lose but to go for it?
Q: You spent your first day of shooting in a jail? A: Yes. People are most open and most vulnerable when they feel it is safe, and it is hard to feel that way in a jail, that’s for sure. It was weird to start the first day of a movie in a jail.
Q: That must have been tough? A: It was. I went to LA County Jail and then I went to a couple of juvenile halls which was life changing.
Q: How so? A: I think we tend to generalise and to just look at anybody who is in jail a certain way. We don’t look at the story of each person who is in there which is what I think is frustrating. It’s the same as people saying, ‘Is this movie a war story? Is this a story about war?’ I feel you tend to generalise each individual story, what the story is. If someone is a soldier and they are at war, does that mean they are just a soldier at war? Or do they have their own story? And has that story become a war story because they are a soldier? People are coloured by things and that type of prejudice because it’s not what the story about. But in this movie, as in every movie, I found myself learning a different lesson and the biggest lesson I learnt from this movie was from my experience with these boys in juvenile hall.
Q: Working in the same field as your sister (Maggie) do you feel pressure to compete with her? A: No, I think we have a lot of other complications, but I don’t think that’s one of them.
Q: Like what? A: The idea of competition, particularly in a creative atmosphere, is always present and if you don’t acknowledge that then you are doing yourself and the process a disservice. What made it so much fun working with Tobey for example, is that he’s my contemporary, and what’s great is the acknowledgement of admiration, the acknowledgement of competition, the acknowledgement of the complications. As regards my sister, if you are really with someone from the beginning of your life, like I have been with Maggie, she had a couple of years on the earth before me but I’ve been with her since the beginning of my life. This would take so long to explain. Sorry, I’ve gone off on a tangent. Can you ask me the next time you interview me?
Q: OK, I’ll hold you to that. In this movie Tobey again will be seen as a great actor. A lot of people just remember him as Spiderman – do you think people will be surprised? A: Yes. It’s like when I worked with Heath Ledger. When we started working together I think people were blown away by his performance in the movie (Brokeback Mountain). I don’t think people expected that from him. At least that’s what I heard that from the journalists and people who saw that movie. It is wonderful to see someone who everybody talks about. It is wonderful to hear. It is wonderful to have either fooled the people as he has done or to have been honest in the way that he has been that they go, wow!.
Q: You studied Eastern religions? A: I haven’t heard that question in a very long time. At the time, I just went with what moved me. I read this book by this Lama when I was in high school, and I thought it was fascinating. The ideas were fascinating and so when I went to college there was an incredible Eastern religions professor, so I just started studying it. I couldn’t give you a reason for why I gravitated towards it, it just seemed right. It was just one of those things. My mother’s Jewish, my father’s Christian, so when I grew up I didn’t really know exactly like where I fitted in or how I felt spiritually. Then I started to believe and started to like the idea that we’re all kind of interconnected. I liked it on an intellectual level but I didn’t really understand what it meant. I still don’t totally understand what it means, but then I studied Tibet and the culture of Tibet in particular, and again, I found it unbelievable how they went from being a totally warring society where essentially they ruled the world to a non-warring, all spiritual country, nation. All of it was fascinating to me and somehow, who knows, maybe it’s another life or something. I don’t know, but I just liked it.
Q: Are you spiritual – for instance do you meditate? A: Yeah, of course, I do lots of things. Yeah, I do.
Q: What does meditation give to you? What does it give me? A: Sometimes it gives me gas, sometimes it creates a sense of ... God. We’re getting really serious now. Sometimes I think that. ... one can’t separate the world from one’s self, and it kind of brings you back to, this is me and that’s what’s happening in the world, and what’s the difference? Is it me that’s doing it, or is it just what’s happening? It just gives perspective.
Q: Actors always say they love each other when they’re talking about a film they’re promoting, but the three of you actually do seem to like each other. A: I was honoured that Tobey wanted to do the movie, because I know he’s very picky. And he’s had so many opportunities to choose to do movies and he picked this one. So, from the beginning I felt kind of honoured that he wanted to do it. I don’t believe and I could be wrong, that there are filmmakers who are so extraordinary, that they can make something charismatic, or they can make something moving, when two people don’t like each other at all, or have no connection. I do think that’s possible, and there are those famous stories about all those things that people love, but in this case there was real camaraderie between us. Tobey and I would work out together, we played basketball together, I tore both ligaments in my leg and my ankle because of it ... and I don’t think either of us ever pretended like there wasn’t great admiration and great competition. And I think that made for the experience.
Q: You seem to have a natural style about the way you work – what kind of role do you think you wouldn’t be able to pull off? A: Well, I definitely couldn’t play Denzel Washington’s part in Glory. That would probably not work out so well. But it would be interesting in some strange way.
That's exactly what I was just wondering! I'm reading through the interview and, frankly, the competition stuff and the meditation stuff is old hat (and was confusing). And then - BAM! - he mentions Heath! The date on the article is today (Australian time) but does anyone know when the interview actually took place? As far as I know this is the first time Jake has voluntarily brought up Heath and actually used Heath's name publicly since his death. I wonder if Nate's Oscar interview had something to do with this.
"Just curious - how come you didn't mention Heath?"
Honestly, I read the interview fast and I skipped the answer to that question thinking it was about Tobey (I am not particularly interested in him). If I had read that reply, Heath would have been the first thing I mentioned. I adore Heath. I feel like a fool for having missed that question!
I'm pretty sure this interview took place in L.A. in early December at that news conference at the four seasons hotel.
It was mostly the foreign press that was at that news conference and bits and pieces from the conference are being released to coincide when Brothers is relased because Jake, Tobey and Natalie had no plans to do any PR overseas fro this film.
I think the interview was done in December 2009, when he did the Brothers promo and press conference with the foreign press. It was before Nate and the Oscars.
Thia interview was done before Nate and that pig blogger. Jake is filming SC not promoting Brothers, it had to be done in Dec. and it was realeased in the Oz press because it's opening there and i'm sure an Australian journaliat asked him these set of questions.
I guess I'll always be confused why people were surprised by Heath's performance in BBM. Didn't they watch Monster's Ball, Brother's Grimm, Lords of Dogtown...? He was a chameleon. *shrugs*
If I had read that reply, Heath would have been the first thing I mentioned.
Special K posted link for Nate's Oscar interview, she mentioned tripping over the wires and some other details but she didn't mention question about Heath. One of the things I'll never understand.
Could be that after the extremely awkward moment with Nate and the incident with DSF Jake's PR decided to put something out there about Heath since enough people are still commenting on Jake's weird silence. The timing for such a random quote is suspicious IMO.
I guess I'll always be confused why people were surprised by Heath's performance in BBM. Didn't they watch Monster's Ball, Brother's Grimm, Lords of Dogtown...? He was a chameleon. *shrugs
I'm shrugging along with you. He absolutely was a chameleon and he was so fucking brilliant in Monster's Ball. I know Halle won an Oscar, but I thought he was the best thing in that movie. To think of the roles he would've played in the future is just heartbreaking ...
To me it's just surprising. Before BBM he seemed to be respected as an actor and while the success of BBM was unexpected, I was never like "wow, Heath Ledger is a good actor". I've seem many movies with him and always thought he was great.
Heath was very good in Monster's Ball for as short a period of time he was in it. What a tragic role.
Special K posted link for Nate's Oscar interview, she mentioned tripping over the wires and some other details but she didn't mention question about Heath. One of the things I'll never understand.
I doubt there was any intent or lack of intent there.
I think critics and public took Heath seriously as an actor a lot more after BBM (what's wrong with that, by the way? It doesn't change the fact that he was hugely talented and versatile). Although great in earlier roles, at the time he was much better known for his pretty face and playboy ways than for his acting skills.
The difference is, I think Heath and Matt were really friends in RL... ;)
Yeah maybe.
I just can't put my finger on Jake, maybe he just doesn't like to pay too many compliments to male actors his age. Friends or no friends, you know? Maybe he's just that type of guy?
Is it just me, or does anyone else sometimes find Jake hard to follow when he talks? After he mentions Heath and what he "heard from journalist and people who saw the movie" he continues, but I find the last three sentences confusing. He starts each one with "It is wonderful...," but is he talking about Heath or about Tobey? The original question is about Tobey, but I can't tell ...
Watch some interviews with them together. I'm probably going to get crap for saying this - you can see real friendship between them in a way you can't between Jake and Heath imo. Heath also seemed to look up to Matt from what I've read.
^^ LOL I agree! It comes out sometimes. Being a straight acting man, sometimes co-workers would bring up a woman passing by and make comments, I knew the person was wondering where I was and intrigued by my sexuality without asking. And sometimes I would have to look quickly at an interesting looking guy without staring. But for the most part, I'm only questioned because there is very seldom a female with me. I'm not into womens fashion, loves all kinds of music, but I used to hate house (dance / disco) music.
***
March 27, 12:12 PM I agree with you totally!!!
I know all too well men who are married, have children and the family life, but are secretely interested in men sexually also. I know most on this site will call them GAY and in the closet, but I will let them label themselves. I know they like both sexes.
I also know of men who are all into sports, cars and have absolutely no interest in what society thinks is the gay man. (ie fashion, bitchiness, catty, flamboyant, attention). Some don't consider themselves as gay, and hate the word GAY. They would rather be called homosexual, but there seems to be less debates about this issue lately. They are totally into sex with men but they don't identify much with the political aspect of the Gay life style, YET!
Q: OK, I’ll hold you to that. In this movie Tobey again will be seen as a great actor. A lot of people just remember him as Spiderman – do you think people will be surprised? [interview before Brothers release]
A: Yes [they will be surprised]. It’s like when I worked with Heath Ledger. When we started working together I think people were blown away by his performance in the movie (Brokeback Mountain).
"Nate and the incident with DSF - there was no PR damage so there is no reason for PR to ask reporters to "modify" Jake's interview(s).'
I agree the only people who think Jake needs PR damage control are the ones who dissect everything and every word the guy says. Someone of you have made both incidents an opportunity to pay armchair shrink on why Jake hasn't spoken out about Heath's death. Bottom line, its none of your business. Maybe his silence is his tribute to Heath since Heath seemed to hate doing press. Hardly anyone paid attention to Nate's question about Heath except this board and OMG. DSF's lies only made Jake look better. What's to fix?
LOL. If you really believe it's so out of bounds to be talking about stuff that's "none of anyone's business" you wouldn't even be on this blog. You could easily say Jake's sexuality isn't anyone's business, or who Jake dates isn't anyone's business, or which movie roles he chooses isn't anyone's business.
After two years, Heath's name is coming up in Jake's interviews, and that's noteworthy because of his previous silence, that's all.
Hardly seems earth-shattering to me. It's not like Jake really talked about how he feels about Heath, or about his being gone--rather, he talked about what other people said about Heath. As for the lack of followup, I'm betting Heath was on the no no list, along with anything else personal.
And what a joke, talking about learning to live in the moment. I 'd hardly call hiding in the back of the closet living.
"Maybe his silence is his tribute to Heath since Heath seemed to hate doing press."
I have a feeling Jake thinks he's above paying tributes (with words or silence) to Heath. I guess saying nothing is better than saying something he doesn’t mean.
It occurred to me as I was re-reading that interview, that if I didn't know who Heath Ledger was, I wouldn't know that he had died two years ago from what Jake said. Before anyone gets pissed off, that's not a criticism of him or his words - but it sounded to me like he was talking about someone that is still alive. Or maybe he really was referring only to Tobey in those last three sentences, I don't know.
I just a pic (ONTD) of Gerard Butler and Jennifer Aniston, appears Gerard did a Jakey (finger to the butt). But Jennifer has a better ass to Reese. But so does Atticus.
Was he ever - he had the most amazing facial bone structure. Looks like he had the blue contacts in too - but I love his brown eyes. He looks great in this vid - Jopicca always makes great Heath vids.
Thanks very much, Anon. 10:03. I liked the music too.
I have a feeling Jake thinks he's above paying tributes (with words or silence) to Heath. I guess saying nothing is better than saying something he doesn’t mean.
^^ Whatever Jake's reason are for not speaking publicly about Heath are (his) reason's, and nobody here knows what they are. You can drag this thing on til the sun don't shine but it's his "RIGHT" and perogative to speak or not speak. There is no reason to get upset with him about it, especially if you don't know Jake or did not know Heath personally. It's very simple. He's not obligated to satisfy your wants or needs on this one. Apparently it's personal.
He starts each one with "It is wonderful...," but is he talking about Heath or about Tobey? The original question is about Tobey, but I can't tell ...
It is obvious the subject here is Heath.
And it wouldn't make any sense for Jake to say "everybody" talked about Tobey or that he made people go "wow". Plus, Jake has said in the past that Heath carries his heart on his sleeve in real life which shows in his performance in BBM (i.e. "to have been honest in the way that he has been").
I have a feeling Jake thinks he's above paying tributes (with words or silence) to Heath. I guess saying nothing is better than saying something he doesn’t mean.
Sorry, that doesn't make sense and there is no reason to believe that Jake lies about his friendship with Heath.
It's clear to me that Jake is a smart guy. But his way of expressing himself at times can be a bit convoluted and meandering. And reading an interview is different than listening to one.
I guess saying nothing is better than saying something he doesn’t mean. IA.
I guess some people decided to live in denial and will always "claim" that Jake can stay in touch with his colleagues, can have good friends and can appreciate other people's acting EXCEPT when the person in question is Heath Ledger.
Since everyone talks Heath, I just saw some screenshots from the Parnassus DVD of him clowning around for wardrobe tests. Good God he was attractive. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yLGh2Sl5kvs
Jopicca: Wanted to share with you some screenshots from the new released DVD of The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus. There are new pictures of Heath Ledger at the wardrobe test, and from some other scenes. Enjoy! And watch in HD please, if possible. Ive used music from a band from Perth (Heaths hometown). Name of the band is "ShadowPlay", the title of the song is "Alone". - I love the Parnassus- DVD with all the specials it is amazing!!! The DVD and the Blue-Ray are available on Amazon, the music is available on I-Tunes.

Dear Ted:
ReplyDeleteSince Toothy's and Grey's careers aren't doing so well, any chance that coming out would improve their lot—maybe make people want to see them more since they would be less boring if they were gay and acting straight?
—S
Dear Talk on Town:
T2 and G2 may get a whole lot of tabloid buzz if they come out, but both of the dudes are still totally terrified they won't get the roles they want if studio types know they're gay—especially Toothy, who loves his heartthrob status.
Dear Ted:
Are two of your favorite gay B.V.s, Crescent Kumquat and Judas Jack-Off, native of the same geographical area? And why do Toothy Tile and Grey Goose have couples issues? Toothy dropped/was dropped by his beard and seems happy about it; Grey only use his fag-hag for red carpet events and very rare paparazzi pictures. They're both working as usual, so it should be like their second honeymoon phase instead of the "Is it your CD or mine?" moment.
—A
Dear Blinded by the Slight:
Just like with straight couples, gay couples suffer from competitive careeritis, too. As is the case with Tooth 'n' Grey. And no to the geo query.
Dear Ted:
Don't know if you're up for rescue cats as well as dogs, but I have three of them and volunteer one day a week for a local no-kill shelter. My question: Is Toothy Tile George Clooney? I'm sure he's gay, and he always looks unhappy in photos with his "dates."
—Icarus
Dear Cat Lady:
I've got love for all rescue pets, but G.C. is not T2. but maybe George should bring his flask to more outings, because he looked rather smiley at the Oscars.
Bitch-Back! Toothy, Sandy and Twilight Stir It Up!
dudes are still totally terrified they won't get the roles they want if studio types know they're gay
ReplyDeleteStudio types do know.
Just like with straight couples, gay couples suffer from competitive careeritis, too. As is the case with Tooth 'n' Grey.
ReplyDeleteWrong again.
George should bring his flask to more outings, because he looked rather smiley at the Oscars
ReplyDeleteHe didn't. Ted is having a bad day :)
Just like with straight couples, gay couples suffer from competitive careeritis, too. As is the case with Tooth 'n' Grey.
ReplyDeleteSo, does Ted imply that Austin is jealous of Jake's career?
Well, if you compete with your friend or partner then there is jealousy and your friendship or relationship isn't worth much.
ReplyDeleteToday is stunt work & effects day! My kind of day!
ReplyDelete10:15 AM Mar 26th
@outsideorg hah! Jake jumping out of a moving train today! Weeeee!

End of day 20! half way through Source Code shoot & having a... Blast! (lame explosion pun intended.)

Very interesting post, Jackie. :)
ReplyDeleteA man in heat can look perilously close to a killer on the make and you don't want to mistake aggression for interest, not with that kind of intensity on the loose.
ReplyDeleteWorks for straights, too. Fantastic article, Jackie. :)
Even as a kid, I could pick out gay faces in magazines. There was a "haunted, hunted" quality that made it obvious.
ReplyDeleteMother Nature is amazing.
^^straight women, I should say.
ReplyDeleteMother Nature is amazing.
ReplyDeleteShe is, isn't she?
Yes, great article, Jackie. On the Dr Oz show yesterday there was a segment about intuition, what it is and that a big part of it really is paying attention to small details and how our brain instantly compares those details to hidden past experiences and memories and how it's an instinctive quality for survival. After reading this article it seems gaydar might be part of the brain's intuition area, and I wonder if it is, is it learned or inborn? Interesting.
ReplyDeleteSo you think you can spot a gay in the wild? Oh really! Because according to the New York Post, male sexual ambiguity is rendering mere mortals incapable of such callous judgmental accuracy. What exactly is this world coming to?!
ReplyDeleteEvery few months it seems as though one or both of the New York City tabloids repackage this identical story — the lines are being blurred between what a straight man is and what a gay man is, blah blah blah — but this appears to be the first time that either one of them has gone all out and just flat-out declared gaydar to be dead.
Gawker

ReplyDeleteVery.
Tobey Maguire ta horrible.
ReplyDeleteWhat?
In modern times (or in a more perfect world!), hopefully if men are more comfortable with their sexuality, it won't matter as much - but I can definitely see gay intuition being necessary for survival, and finding someone, especially in years past. People have so much in common. :(
ReplyDeleteGaydar = gay radar
ReplyDeleteOkay, I might get into serious trouble with this, but I've been asked dozens of times how you can tell a gay man or woman from his/her straight counterparts.
(Take it for all it's worth--I'm just having fun here)
#1) The walk
Gay men take short strides.
#2) Awareness of people around them
Gay men need to look at every other person in sight.
(Restoration Hardware, on the other hand, is a favorite among gay men)
#3) Names
Gay men dislike nicknames.
#4) Clothing fit
ReplyDeleteGay men will wear it as tight as possible.
#5) Music preferences
Gay men: bubble-gum Europop. Or House.
#6) Smiling too much or not at all in pictures
Gay men grin from ear to ear in pictures.

ReplyDelete'Gaydar Secrets' comment by Paulie:
ReplyDelete"Sometimes you just know.

ReplyDelete"Hmmm....Lol...As a REAL GAY MAN, I think ur Gaydar line-up though very nice for looking up whilst ur bored and sipping a Cuppa, has ABSOLUTELY MISSED THE MARK, Honey...lol
1) Has the words or any other acronymn alluding to the term G-A-Y written across his tight pink tshirt;

ReplyDeleteThere's no question that the concept of gaydar can be stereotypical - and that's why I used to dismiss it.

ReplyDeleteAustin is probably proud and happy for Jake's career, but I think it would only be natural for Austin to wish he had the same kind of career or more success.
Plus, the author's last name is Ledger, who wouldn't love that?
ReplyDelete:D
Austin is probably proud and happy for Jake's career, but I think it would only be natural for Austin to wish he had the same kind of career or more success.
ReplyDeleteWishing and working for a better career is natural and expected. True love isn't selfish so being jealous over career and money is a bad sign.
^^Very true, probably unavoidable.
ReplyDeleteThis article reminds me of Michaelangelo - and we all know his appreciation for male beauty.
ReplyDeleteOnce, not long after they met, Tommaso wrote to Michelangelo to ask why he had not written for so long: could it be that Michelangelo had forgotten him? Michelangelo replied that he thought he had convinced Tommaso of his “boundless love”:
“……Perhaps you [said] this to try me or to rekindle a greater flame in me, if it were possible. Whichever it is, I know for sure that I’ll forget your name the day I forget the food I live on; in fact, I could sooner forget my food, which…. nourishes only the body, than your name, which nourishes body and soul, and fills both with such sweetness that I can feel no pain nor fear of death while my mind remembers it. Imagine how happy I would be if my eye also had its share.” [unsigned]

*Sigh* :)
ReplyDeleteTed didn’t say that Grey Goose is jealous of Toothy’s career.
ReplyDeleteWhichever it is, I know for sure that I’ll forget your name the day I forget the food I live on; in fact, I could sooner forget my food, which…. nourishes only the body, than your name, which nourishes body and soul, and fills both with such sweetness that I can feel no pain nor fear of death while my mind remembers it.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful.
If they made it this far with everything against them and survived the Hollywood pressure then I am sure they’ll sort out this too and remain together.

My gaydar goes off for Joseph Gordon-Levitt. (Kid from Third Rock from the Sun, and the movies Brick, Latter Days, Manic, and Havoc)
Anyone else?
OMG, Chan!
ReplyDeleteI like you in those shorts Jake
True love isn't selfish so being jealous over career and money is a bad sign.
ReplyDelete?? This seems to be a rather extreme extrapolation of some speculation about competitiveness. As was noted in another comment, being competitive isn't the same as being jealous. For instance, Jake has made the comment that he and Maggie have always been competitive career-wise. Doesn't mean they are jealous of each other or that they don't love each other or that anyone is being selfish.
Just like with straight couples, gay couples suffer from competitive careeritis, too. As is the case with Tooth 'n' Grey.
ReplyDeleteWhat Ted said doesn't sound good.
ReplyDelete'Gaydar Secrets' comment by Lowrychris:
ReplyDelete"When I first moved to LA, I lived out the tv show 3's Company, except I was a straight man who shared a house with 2 gay men, one out, and one in the closet.
I knew it!

How to tell your parents you are gay.
ReplyDeleteIt's largely the eyes that give it away.

[Some] Gay men are obsessed with women's boobs.
ReplyDeleteThey are probably just trying to figure out why straight men are obsessed with them ;)
Little girls who act like boys are known as tomboys.
ReplyDeleteMy mother grew up in Texas, the only girl among two football-playing brothers and an ex-military father.
Fuck that.
ReplyDeleteScanning the pages of Los Angeles m4m listings, the same words keep popping up: regular, normal, straight, frat, ex-frat, bi, straight-acting, discreet, and married.
Queerty
Jackie, clean up at 9:38 please? Thank you. :)

ReplyDeleteElle: Describe your gayest moment that didn’t involve knitting needles.

ReplyDeleteJake and Heath
ReplyDeleteAnne Hathaway was very convincing with her Parkinson's.

ReplyDelete24 March 2010
*** This review may contain spoilers ***
Final Verdict: 9/10.

Good manip is hard to make and this one is great :)
ReplyDeleteJake and Heath
That's such a great, real looking manip. The real pics are: Jake with Drunkst and Heath with Michelle. But the manip is 100x better than the real ones. :D

Kudos to whoever did those. Great job.
ReplyDeleteThanks 4:19 PM #2.
ReplyDeleteThe real pics are: Jake with Drunkst and Heath with Michelle. But the manip is 100x better than the real ones. :D
ReplyDeleteIt's funny how they have more chemistry with each other in manips than in real pictures with their respective girlfriends. lol
Interesting interview with Jake (for Brothers). He talks about competition, meditation, etc link
ReplyDeleteI really don't understand what people mean about "chemistry".
ReplyDeleteIMO, Jake and Kirsten had a lot of it together but probably they were in a fake relationship.
4:35 PM, I bet you wish you paid more attention during your chemistry classes ;)
ReplyDelete4:35 PM - I think I agree with you.

ReplyDeleteInteresting interview with Jake (for Brothers). He talks about competition, meditation, etc
ReplyDeleteQ: Having interviewed you several times over the years, you seem more at ease with yourself nowadays?
ReplyDeleteA: Yes.

Interesting interview with Jake (for Brothers). He talks about competition, meditation, etc
ReplyDeleteJust curious - how come you didn't mention Heath?
Just curious - how come you didn't mention Heath?
ReplyDeleteThat's exactly what I was just wondering!
ReplyDeleteHonestly, I read the interview fast and I skipped the answer to that question thinking it was about Tobey (I am not particularly interested in him). If I had read that reply, Heath would have been the first thing I mentioned. I adore Heath. I feel like a fool for having missed that question!
I wonder if Nate's Oscar interview had something to do with this.
ReplyDeleteThat and the DSF business.
The date on the article is today (Australian time) but does anyone know when the interview actually took place?
ReplyDeleteWe should ask the interviewer, but I presume during Brothers promotion.
I'm pretty sure this interview took place in L.A. in early December at that news
ReplyDeleteconference at the four seasons hotel.
It was mostly the foreign press that was at that news conference and bits and pieces from the conference are being released to coincide when Brothers is relased because Jake, Tobey and Natalie had no plans to do any PR overseas fro this film.
Honestly, I read the interview fast and I skipped the answer to that question
ReplyDeleteI see, thanks.
I think the interview was done in December 2009, when he did the Brothers promo and press conference with the foreign press. It was before Nate and the Oscars.
ReplyDeleteThia interview was done before Nate and that pig blogger. Jake is filming SC not promoting Brothers, it had to be done in Dec. and it was realeased in the Oz press because it's opening there and i'm sure an Australian journaliat asked him these set of questions.
ReplyDeleteI wonder if Nate's Oscar interview had something to do with this.
ReplyDeleteThat and the DSF business.
Please explain, what would be the connection.
I guess I'll always be confused why people were surprised by Heath's performance in BBM. Didn't they watch Monster's Ball, Brother's Grimm, Lords of Dogtown...? He was a chameleon. *shrugs*
ReplyDeleteIf I had read that reply, Heath would have been the first thing I mentioned.
ReplyDeleteSpecial K posted link for Nate's Oscar interview, she mentioned tripping over the wires and some other details but she didn't mention question about Heath. One of the things I'll never understand.
Please explain, what would be the connection.
ReplyDeleteCould be that after the extremely awkward moment with Nate and the incident with DSF Jake's PR decided to put something out there about Heath since enough people are still commenting on Jake's weird silence. The timing for such a random quote is suspicious IMO.
I guess I'll always be confused why people were surprised by Heath's performance in BBM. Didn't they watch Monster's Ball, Brother's Grimm, Lords of Dogtown...? He was a chameleon. *shrugs
ReplyDeleteI'm shrugging along with you. He absolutely was a chameleon and he was so fucking brilliant in Monster's Ball. I know Halle won an Oscar, but I thought he was the best thing in that movie. To think of the roles he would've played in the future is just heartbreaking ...
Nate and the incident with DSF - there was no PR damage so there is no reason for PR to ask reporters to "modify" Jake's interview(s).
ReplyDeleteMonster's Ball - great role, Heath was fantastic.
ReplyDeleteI'm shrugging along with you.
ReplyDeleteTo me it's just surprising.
ReplyDeleteSpecial K posted link for Nate's Oscar interview, she mentioned tripping over the wires and some other details but she didn't mention question about Heath. One of the things I'll never understand.
I doubt there was any intent or lack of intent there.
Thanks to the person who posted that interview. I found it fascinating, particularly Jake mentioning that meditation sometimes gives him gas.
ReplyDeleteLOLL! I know he was probably kidding but it was still funny.
I doubt there was any intent or lack of intent there.
ReplyDeleteI didn't try to suggest that Special K did something wrong, I just don't get it.
I think critics and public took Heath seriously as an actor a lot more after BBM (what's wrong with that, by the way? It doesn't change the fact that he was hugely talented and versatile). Although great in earlier roles, at the time he was much better known for his pretty face and playboy ways than for his acting skills.
ReplyDeleteOh Man, I hope the Heath-grief police aren't on patrol again. :(
ReplyDeleteAlthough great in earlier roles, at the time he was much better known for his pretty face and playboy ways than for his acting skills.
ReplyDeleteHe was quite private and rarely in tabloids even though he was dating Heather Graham and afterwards Naomi Watts.
I guess I'm only a bit irritated by the word "surprised". If people paid attention to him as an actor they wouldn't have been THAT surprised.
I liked what Matt Damon said, that Heath was the best actor he has worked with. Now that's what I like to read about. ;)
The difference is, I think Heath and Matt were really friends in RL... ;)
ReplyDeleteThe difference is, I think Heath and Matt were really friends in RL... ;)
ReplyDeleteYeah maybe.
I just can't put my finger on Jake, maybe he just doesn't like to pay too many compliments to male actors his age. Friends or no friends, you know? Maybe he's just that type of guy?
Q: OK, I’ll hold you to that. In this movie Tobey again will be seen as a great actor. A lot of people just remember him as Spiderman – do you think people will be surprised?
ReplyDeleteA: Yes.
Yeah maybe.
ReplyDeleteWatch some interviews with them together. I'm probably going to get crap for saying this - you can see real friendship between them in a way you can't between Jake and Heath imo. Heath also seemed to look up to Matt from what I've read.
Is it just me, or does anyone else sometimes find Jake hard to follow when he talks?
ReplyDeleteNo, it's not just you. I think he is talking about Heath and Tobey.
He starts each one with "It is wonderful...," but is he talking about Heath or about Tobey?
ReplyDeleteI assume Heath since no one really talked about Tobey's performance in Brothers.
It is wonderful to see someone who everybody talks about.
ReplyDeleteJake talks about Heath.
^^Or maybe Jake thinks Tobey's performance generated more buzz than it was actually the case. Who knows?
ReplyDeleteIt is clear that Jake talks about Heath.
ReplyDeleteI'm probably going to get crap for saying this - you can see real friendship between them in a way you can't between Jake and Heath imo.
ReplyDeleteWell, I do think that is crap.
ReplyDelete^^ LOL
I agree!
He is talking about both first Tobey then Heath.
ReplyDeleteMakes sense, he was promoting Brothers not BBM. I'm surprised there wasn't a follow-up question about Heath since it was an Oz interview.
Jake and Tobey seemed close during the promo, and we know now who Jake was playing Basketball with when he sparng his ankle.
I just can't put my finger on Jake, maybe he just doesn't like to pay too many compliments to male actors his age.
ReplyDeleteHeath's acting skills aren't the most important thing about Heath to Jake.
Q: OK, I’ll hold you to that. In this movie Tobey again will be seen as a great actor. A lot of people just remember him as Spiderman – do you think people will be surprised? [interview before Brothers release]
ReplyDeleteA: Yes [they will be surprised]. It’s like when I worked with Heath Ledger. When we started working together I think people were blown away by his performance in the movie (Brokeback Mountain).
"Nate and the incident with DSF - there was no PR damage so there is no reason for PR to ask reporters to "modify" Jake's interview(s).'
ReplyDeleteI agree the only people who think Jake needs PR damage control are the ones who dissect everything and every word the guy says.
Heath's acting skills aren't the most important thing about Heath to Jake."
ReplyDeleteYes, it was Heath as a person and friend.
Unless you mean something else...
Since everyone talks Heath, I just saw some screenshots from the Parnassus DVD of him clowning around for wardrobe tests. Good God he was attractive.
ReplyDeleteBottom line, its none of your business.
ReplyDeleteLOL.
8:36 PM, that's what I meant.
ReplyDeleteHardly seems earth-shattering to me. It's not like Jake really talked about how he feels about Heath, or about his being gone--rather, he talked about what other people said about Heath. As for the lack of followup, I'm betting Heath was on the no no list, along with anything else personal.
ReplyDeleteAnd what a joke, talking about learning to live in the moment. I 'd hardly call hiding in the back of the closet living.
"Maybe his silence is his tribute to Heath since Heath seemed to hate doing press."
ReplyDeleteI have a feeling Jake thinks he's above paying tributes (with words or silence) to Heath.
ReplyDeleteTed and Lisa's report about meeting Jake - Jake talked about Heath like he was still alive.
ReplyDeleteI just a pic (ONTD) of Gerard Butler and Jennifer Aniston, appears Gerard did a Jakey (finger to the butt). But Jennifer has a better ass to Reese. But so does Atticus.
ReplyDelete^^^I just saw

He was gorgeous!! There are some shots of him in BBM (when Ennis was young) where Heath was breathtaking.
ReplyDeleteGood God he was attractive.
ReplyDeleteWas he ever - he had the most amazing facial bone structure.
ReplyDelete^^ Whatever Jake's reason are for not speaking publicly about Heath are (his) reason's, and nobody here knows what they are.
It's very simple. He's not obligated to satisfy your wants or needs on this one.
ReplyDeleteApparently it's personal.
It's Apparent that anon 9:13 and some posters just don't UNDERSTAND this.
He starts each one with "It is wonderful...," but is he talking about Heath or about Tobey? The original question is about Tobey, but I can't tell ...
ReplyDeleteIt is obvious the subject here is Heath.
And it wouldn't make any sense for Jake to say "everybody" talked about Tobey or that he made people go "wow". Plus, Jake has said in the past that Heath carries his heart on his sleeve in real life which shows in his performance in BBM (i.e. "to have been honest in the way that he has been").

ReplyDeleteStupid trolly.
ReplyDeleteTrolly has given up on trying to prove jake is straight...now it's that Jake is deficient in the brain. Give it up troll.
ReplyDeleteI have a feeling Jake thinks he's above paying tributes (with words or silence) to Heath. I guess saying nothing is better than saying something he doesn’t mean.
ReplyDeleteSorry, that doesn't make sense and there is no reason to believe that Jake lies about his friendship with Heath.
It's clear to me that Jake is a smart guy. But his way of expressing himself at times can be a bit convoluted and meandering. And reading an interview is different than listening to one.
ReplyDeleteAnd reading an interview is different than listening to one.
ReplyDeleteVery much so.
Trolly has given up on trying to prove jake is straight...now it's that Jake is deficient in the brain. Give it up troll.
ReplyDeleteThere is no way to know for sure about his sexual orientation. And I doubt anyone thinks he's deficient in the brain. How ridiculous.
I guess saying nothing is better than saying something he doesn’t mean.

There is no way to know for sure about his sexual orientation.

I guess saying nothing is better than saying something he doesn’t mean.
ReplyDeleteIA.
