Hollywood's 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell'

For years, the entertainment industry has held a kind of celebrity "don't ask, don't tell" policy that keeps some stars in the closet and others open, but not flaunting their relationships in the institution of marriage.

For years, Hollywood publicists have guarded the secrets of their clients' sexuality, for fear it would kill them at the box office. Famously closeted stars included Rock Hudson, Merv Griffin and Paul Lynde. Many of today's stars -- Jodie Foster, Michelle Rodriguez and Clay Aiken, for example -- have been the subject of speculation on their sexual orientation.

Though some groups may threaten to boycott advertisers, "Anyone who has a problem with it will no doubt find themselves in an increasingly bitter minority," Musto said.

"There are moments in the history of any movement when the corner is turned," Geoff Kors, executive director of Equality California, a gay rights group, told the Washington Post. "This is it. This is the tipping point."

Ted Casablanca, a columnist for E! Online and a gay man who just "married" his partner in a civil union ceremony in Hawaii, agrees that public perception of same-sex couples goes up a "notch" when stars are legally able to marry.

"Wherever the notch is to legalize in society, it doesn't matter," Casablanca said. "It's one more notch and the more notches you get, we're a part of a culture that is less inflammatory and incendiary."

Though gay marriage will make no difference for DeGeneres' strong fan base, it could have a more shocking impact on those who are still in the closet, he said.

"If Tom Cruise said, 'Guess what? After all these years, I decided to be gay and get married,' that's hugely different," Casablanca said. DeGeneres and Takei are "the types of stars who can afford to do whatever they want with their reputation.

"For Ellen, it's not a risk of alienating her fan base," he said. "She's already so family-oriented and not a sexy, slinky broad out there. She's very domesticated and secure.

"These people have already made up their minds that she is one of them," he said. "She'll say, 'You're not going to believe what Portia did emptying the dishwasher last night.'"

That conventional tone is one of the reasons Casablanca has -- so far -- not thought about legally marrying his partner, though he admits he might consider it for financial reasons so the couple can file jointly on their taxes.

"I never wanted to get married, like my parents bickering all those years or like Britney," he said. "Our very nature [as gay men] used to be bucking the system. That's how we were raised."

The second film receiving mixed reaction and modest box office returns, on a budget of $95 million. Interesting. I expected better box office results.

  4. Resident Evil - Although it carried some fan hatred due to the involvement of Paul W. S. Anderson, it has proven to be a successful franchise with Resident Evil: Apocalypse and the third Resident Evil: Extinction. So far one of the strongest on-going video game film series. The first movie had a budget of $33 million, while the sequels had budgets of $45 million each.

  5. Looks like PoP is in some stellar company! Not.

I still think it's sad that this is the franchise that Jake got. Couldn't he even get a comic book one? I bet he is very envious of RDJ.

    ReplyDelete
  6. I don't know, PoP script / game sounds more interesting than The Iron Man or typical comic book hero.

    ReplyDelete
  7. PoP doesn't interest me in the least. I have no intentions of seeing it at this point in time. I'll have to hear rave reviews from credible critics before spending my money on it.

    ReplyDelete
  8. Critics are overrated!

    ReplyDelete
  9. That's why I said credible critics. In other words, ones who I think actually know what they're talking about. I won't listen to the Jake fans. They'll rave about PoP even if it's the worst movie ever made.

  10. Because Heath didn't come back from the brink, you want to define him solely as a druggie and no longer as an actor and human being.

Many want to see Heath that way and are happy when media sees him like that too and are jealous when colleagues in the film industry praise his professionalism and friends describe him as a good friend. I don't know why that is, but I noticed it.

    ReplyDelete
  11. I'm betting they hope TDK gets lousy critics, they'd be laughing their asses off.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Many want to see Heath that way ...

I can think of just two reasons for that:

    a) they didn't like Heath
    b) by trashing Heath they want to make someone else look better.

I'd still suggest watch it and judge for yourself, don't rely too much on reviews. Honestly, I think the first film will have pretty decent reviews like PotC.

I see it exactly the same way.

  15. I don't want to waste money on PoP because, as I already stated, I have no interest in it. Why would I bother watching it just so I can form my own opinion? I don't do that for any other movies. I only go to see a film if it has some appeal for me. If, as I also already stated, people whose opinion I value recommend the movie, I might decide to spend my money on it. But that's a big IF.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Critics?

PoP will be a popcorn movie, it just needs to be fun.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Popcorn movies are a dime a dozen. If they don't have something special about them why bother seeing them? There's no guarantee that PoP will be fun. Most of these popcorn movies are actually mind-numbing and try too hard.

  20. Did anyone read the script?

  21. I don't think PoP will be an acting challange for Jake. Brothers will be. But Jake proved his acting chops in October Sky, Donnie Darko and BBM. I think he'll give us a good performance, I still think Tobey will be the outstanding actor in this movie though.
PoP will be a fun popcorn movie, for fanboys of this video game and girls/women and gay guys. I think PoP will have an audience.

    ReplyDelete
  22. PoP doesn't require any acting ability. That's why Jake will be fine in it.

    I can't stand Harrison Ford!

    ReplyDelete
  25. You know, some of you guys are just so incredibly nasty, why so hateful about someone you don't even know? It's like you want someone to fail, I have no idea why. If PoP isn't your cup of tea, fine, but why do you have put it down and predict failure before you've even seen it or read a lick of the script? Some of you must be the "see the glass half empty" killjoy types. You might see about a serotonin re-uptake inhibitor to improve your outlook on life. PoP sounds like it will have a story to it. Popcorn movies can be fun once in awhile, and I think every actor should have the chance to make a fun movie - most all have and continue to.

I wouldn't entirely agree with that, some of his older performances were great. The last two were lackluster, but I felt he didn't really put his heart into the roles. I'm curious about his upcoming stuff.

  46. It is painful watching Jake turn into an old closet queen like Kevin Spacey. At least Kevin as far as I know hasnt lied/bearded like Jake has. The problem Jake has is that he does certianly not have the talent that Kevin Spacry has. turning to movies like PoP and the moon project is his alternative. He will make a lot of movie but will not have a long career. The greats like Nicholson, Pacino, Hoffman, and even Spacey will great parts when they choose to work. Dont see that happening to Jake. Not now anyway.

Out of all the billions of people in the world, I'm sure it's obvious to a lot of other people besides Jack when something doesn't make sense, and they might use a similar phrase that one of the other billions does every so often too. I never thought I'd end up being put in the same category Jack troll, and I don't post on IMDB, but whatever. I have no problem with people having an opinion, but surely you'd need something to base it on, as in seeing it or reading the script, before you'd form a negative one? That's all I'm just saying. You all are very vocal about having the right to express an opinion, but you don't seem very open when some do, if it disagrees with prevailing on. BTW, a serontin reuptake inhibitor is helpful with premature ejaculations too, i.e. as judging films before you've seen them. Just saying.

  56. Donnie Darko actress defends controversial sequel

The leading actress of the Donnie Darko sequel has defended its director in the face of criticism. In 2001, Donnie Darko launched the careers of leading man Jake Gyllenhaal and writer/director Richard Kelly, with audiences and critics alike stunned by its innovative look at teenage anxiety and hallucination. But when sequel S Darko was announced, fans and Kelly reacted angrily, questioning why the 2001 film needed a follow-up.

Kelly disowned the project, writing on his blog: "I haven't read this script. I have absolutely no involvement with this production, nor will I ever be involved. "I have no control over the rights from our original film, and neither I nor my producing partner Sean McKittrick stands to make any money from this film."

But Step Up 2 the Streets star Briana Evigan, who stars as Samantha Darko, has defended the sequel, saying: "Chris Fisher is the coolest director." The film begins seven years after the events of the first film and sees Samantha Darko - played by Daveigh Chase in the original - and a friend troubled by visions while on a roadtrip.

"This [film] is so crazy. It's basically about going back in time and changing something," Evigan told MTV. "[My character] ends up switching a moment in time to take her life - [to help] somebody else, her best friend. It goes into all different dimensions, but it's really about turning something around for somebody else, and being able to go back and have another chance." "We just come back [in time] and change what happened in the first one," she added.

S Darko is currently filming in Utah ahead of a 2009 release.

  57. Jake Gyllenhaal Sang Showtunes for Cowboys

It's a good thing Jake Gyllenhaal and Reese Witherspoon are tied at the hip—otherwise, Billy Crystal's commentary on the new collector's edition of City Slickers might raise some eyebrows...

Remember Billy's young son in Slickers? We didn't, but it turns out the Brokeback Mountain star already had a cowboy movie to his credit—Gyllenhaal made his debut as a 10-year-old in the Crystal-helmed Western comedy.

Thanks to a review of the reissued DVD in the June 6 issue of Entertainment Weekly, we learn that the popular Oscars host pokes fun at his young costar in the film's extras (or maybe it was just a psychic casting prediction):

“He was always performing,” remembers Crystal. “He would sing from South Pacific and we’d all go, ‘He’s gay, he’s going to be gay.’”

Not that there's anything wrong with that.

Otis worked his way (literally) into Wednesday night’s wrap party for “Nailed” for this special Saturday edition of On the Scene.
    ...
Really, it was more like a night off for the cast and crew, as the screwy comedy, beset by financing problems, hasn’t completed production.

So how is Smith enjoying her time in Columbia? “Oh, I live here,” she said. The 19-year-old Irmo High School graduate was the stand-in for Malinda Williams, which means she posed on set as the cameras and lights were adjusted. “When she came on the set, they released us and we did nothing — except eat and sleep,” said Smith, who hopes to get more movie work.

Williams wasn’t at the party, and neither were Jake Gyllenhaal and Jessica Biel, the film’s primary stars. But this movie isn’t lacking boldfaced names, and a few mingled late at Liberty.

    Christian Bale's Heath anger

Christian Bale has dismissed claims Heath Ledger's death was caused by playing The Joker as "ridiculous".

The actor - who stars opposite Heath in new Batman movie 'The Dark Knight' - is adamant Heath's death from an accidental drugs overdose in January had nothing to do with his role in the hotly anticipated movie.

He told Total Film magazine: "It's not for me to tell anybody or to pretend to have insights beyond what I absolutely know, but my instincts are that the idea Heath was disturbed by playing The Joker is ridiculous. Heath was somebody who, like myself, acted for that immersion in a character.

"It's not an unusual thing. And from working with him and knowing him, I don't think that was unusual for him at all." Shortly after Heath's untimely passing, it was revealed the Australian actor had complained of suffering from severe insomnia while portraying the comic book villain.

It was alleged to be a reason why the 'Brokeback Mountain' - who was just 28 when he died - had started taking strong sleeping tablets. Several different prescription drugs, including Valium and the highly addictive sleeping pill Zoplicone, were found next to his body.

Christian, who plays Bruce Wayne and his superhero alter-ego in 'The Dark Knight', has also promised film fans they will be blown away by Heath's performance in the movie.

He added: "Heath's performance is fantastic. As was working with him and knowing him, he was great f***ing company - a wonderful guy. I hope this movie will celebrate his work."

  95. Even in a culture that often cycles through moments of bisexual chic — Britney and Madonna, make way for Lindsay Lohan and Samantha Ronson (photographed smooching in Cannes, France) — and despite survey data showing that young people, in particular, are open to sexual experimentation, bisexuality still tends to be treated as a novelty, a titillating fluke, a phase or even a cover for homosexuality. Dr. Chivers herself was an author of a 2005 study using similar methods that found that men who called themselves bisexual were significantly more aroused by one gender, usually by men.

  96. Wahlberg glad to have turned down ocean's films

Actor Mark Wahlberg is relieved he turned down the opportunity to star in George Clooney's Ocean's movie franchise, because the films all "sucked". The Boogie Nights star was initially approached to play the part of Linus Caldwell - a role that eventually went to Matt Damon - in Ocean's Eleven, but he decided against joining Clooney and pal Brad Pitt for the casino heist movie.

And, even though two of his own projects turned out to be flops, he insists anything would have been better than having to pretend he enjoyed making Ocean's Eleven.

He says, "It was well worth it! The second one sucked! People tell George Clooney it's great, but we all know it sucked.

"I made two bad movies instead - Planet of the Apes and The Truth About Charlie - but doing that was better than sitting with Brad and George, telling the press how great everybody is: 'We were in Europe, George was funny, then we had some wine...' - that's not for me. I do love those guys, but I had to step out on my own."

June 14, 2008 -- GEORGE Clooney may already have found Sarah Larson's replacement. Our source claims Clooney "has been dating a woman in her mid-30s" for months now, even before he split with Larson. The source also claims Clooney knew he was going to leave Larson months ago, and let her do interviews and some modeling to "get her a career" before the split. Larson also got some new breasts. A rep for Clooney, who's vacationing at his house in Lake Como, said, "How does one as public as George secretly date anyone?"

Trash Heath on WFT2, can't you do it on DCF? Oh yeah I forgot, no one cares about your vitriolic rants there. You know you've become truly pathetic when no even DCFers are interested in what you have to say. Oh well, bitch away oh bitter one. ;)

HeathHaterHag. You're really out there. Must be lonely. Well, Heath OD'd, so you can be satisfied that he got his. Enjoy. Savor your satisfaction.

That's not enough? How could you add to your pleasure? Would making sure his daughter has nothing to admire about her father do it for you? Yes, that's it. Someday, she has to know he was a crap human being and a crap actor.

Well, go to it. You're doing it for Jake, after all. Don't deny it. I know you're dreaming: piss on Heath, win Jake's love.

  108. George Michael has just announced two massive concerts in London to celebrate both the end of his current 25 Live Tour -- which began in Barcelona in 2006 -- and end of his touring all together. The two shows will be played at Earl's Court and have been dubbed "The Final Two" as a nod to "The Final One", the finale for Michael's first band Wham! which took place at Wembley stadium in 1986. The concerts are scheduled for August 24th and August 25th and according to a statement on the singer's website "these shows are truly not to be missed by any George Michael fan." Yahoo news reports that while George will no longer be touring, he may play the occasional one-off date or charity event. Or, if he's anything like Cher or the Rolling Stones, we'll see him back on stage two years from now for the "really real final tour," followed by the "I swear to God that this is the last time I'll ever tour" tour and the "I mean in it -- not another tour unless I need the money or get tired of trolling the public loos of London for quasi-satisfying quickies" tour.

If you're still shell shocked from learning Clay Aiken is going to be a father, you may want to sit down before reading any further: In Touch magazine reports that he's already gearing up for baby number two. The American Idol runner-up and his best friend, 50-year-old music producer Jaymes Foster, are expecting their first child in August and are hoping to conceive again next March. A source told the magazine that the two have frozen eggs and sperm and are ecstatic about having more children. "Clay and Jaymes are committed to having at least two children," the source says, adding, "They’re both incredibly successful and wealthy, so money is certainly no object." Because everybody knows that money is the single most important ingredient for raising a happy, well-adjusted child. Just ask Christina Crawford.

  112. "The truth and the drug issue bother you too much, don't they? Well, denial is a good strategy. Keep it going if that floats your boat."

I'll tell you the truth: Heath had social anxiety but still starred in Brokeback, despite his fears, because he believed in the message behind the film. He put his whole heart and soul into the characters he played, creating characters like Ennis who live and breathe and feel as real and anyone you've met (and by the way I liked his role in Casanova, very charming imo). He was a loving and caring father who actually seemed to care deeply about being a good father. He treated women with respect and showed far more maturity in his treatments of people in general than you typically find in men in hollywood. He didn't play up to the limelight but stayed focused on his craft. Whatever problems he had with prescription or non-prescription drugs does not in any way take away from his character, just shows he was human and had an emotional depth that probably made it difficult to relate to the culture he found himself in. His death was a tragedy and will remain so regardless of your petty comments. My guess is you are intimidated by a person with such obvious talent, character and spirit.

  118. A heart symbol tragic HEATH LEDGER scribbled on a letter to director TERRY GILLIAM's daughter HOLLY has been turned into a tribute tattoo by the cast and crew of his final film.
Gilliam brought the letter to the set of The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus shortly after the Aussie actor died of an accidental overdose in January (08). Ledger was shooting the fantasy film when he passed away.
And Mini-Me Verne Troyer and select castmates decided to get Ledger's heart symbol duplicated and turned into a tattoo.
Troyer, who wears his heart on his right hand, says, "A lot of us went and copied that heart and had it tattooed in remembrance to Heath.
"We had it copied identical to how he scribbled it."
He reveals one of the people who chose to honour Ledger with the tattoo was the recipient of his heartfelt letter, Gilliam's daughter.

    Interview With Cheyenne Jackson

    ...
AE: If Hollywood gives us another big, gay love story like Brokeback Mountain and you were cast in one of the leads, who would you want to play opposite?
CJ: Hmm, that's a tough one. [Starts to say someone's name, then stops:] I won't say him, because I don't want it to be weird the next time I see him. [Pauses, then comes up with another name:] Ewan McGregor. I'd do a love scene with him any day. Or Hugh Jackman. I've never met him, but he said some lovely things about me in the press when I was in All Shook Up – and we have the same agent. He's an idol of mine, for sure.

AE: I'm guessing that, in terms of theater work, your being out has been a non-issue.
CJ: That's right. Here, your reputation is everything. People know if you've got the goods, if you're easy to work with, and if you can get the job done. Besides, it's New York theater. Everybody's gay!

AE: Are you in a relationship?
CJ: Yeah, for almost eight years. He's a very private person. I don't think anyone could find any pictures of him. He says he's like the Amish; he doesn't like to have his picture taken, because he feels like it's giving away part of his soul. He's a medical physicist, really brilliant and funny. He's the brains behind the operation.

AE: Do you ever feel like you're a sort of poster boy for gay actors?
CJ: Chris Sieber and I were talking about this. Every time they mention either of us in the press, it's always “openly gay Christopher Sieber” and “openly gay Cheyenne Jackson.” It's a little reductive and, after a while, it's like, “Yawn.”

AE: Yet it's understandable that people focus on it, given that so few actors are out -- especially leading man types.
CJ: Sure. I liken it to the experience of a black friend of mine. When he was growing up, there were almost no black people on television; but occasionally, there would be a black family in a commercial or something, and when that happened, his whole family would run in and gather around the TV. To me, that's lovely and precious and sad at the same time.

When I was a little kid, who were the gay people on TV? Charles Nelson Reilly, Paul Lynde, maybe Liberace. So I understand why the gay community wants to embrace actors who are out. People want to be represented.

  130. Perez Hilton: Turning a blog into an empire

The gig: As the self-proclaimed "Queen of All Media," Hilton has become a pop culture phenom with his Hollywood gossip blog, which draws about 7 million page views a day. PerezHilton.com is filled with snarky comments and paparazzi photos and helped usher in 24-hour celebrity "info-tainment."

Education: Bachelor's degree in drama from New York University.

Former jobs: Publicist, actor and journalist at gay publications and tabloid Star magazine.

Got the idea: Hilton, whose real name is Mario Lavandeira, began blogging as a hobby after seeing how easy it was. He focused on Hollywood "because it was something I was inherently curious about, fascinated with. And, let's face it, celebrities -- a lot of them -- are crazy."

Along the path: Started his blog, then called PageSixSixSix, in 2004 with a post about Howard Stern. Within months, tabloid TV show "The Insider" dubbed it "Hollywood's most-hated website." This led to a huge boost in Web traffic.

Name change: After getting sued by the New York Post, which publishes gossip section Page Six, Hilton changed the blog's name to PerezHilton.com. The name reflects his Cuban roots and "the wacky world of celebrities." And what does pal Paris Hilton think? "She loves it."

How it works: Hilton, 30, constantly checks his e-mail, text messages and voice mail and scours the Web for the latest gossip on "A-listers to D-listers to Z-listers," updating his blog an average of 40 times a day. His sources include publicists, agents, managers, dog walkers, nannies and celebrities themselves. Advertisers pay as much as $54,000 to run a one-day ad package on the site.

First big purchase: A new Toyota Camry.

Most surreal moment: When Madonna made him a video in which she seductively asked, "Who do you love more: me or [Hilton's dog] Teddy?" Naturally, Hilton posted the clip -- and his response -- on his blog.

Guilty pleasure: "Cheesy pop music," especially British group Girls Aloud.

The Perez brand: Hilton debuted a clothing line, sold exclusively at retail chain Hot Topic, last week. He also appears in a summer movie, "Another Gay Sequel: Gays Gone Wild," hosts a syndicated radio show, is writing a book on celebrities and is in talks to start his own record label. "I want my own little empire."

What fame hasn't brought: Hilton dishes that "in 2007, I got laid once. One time. Which, for a gay man, is unheard of. That's like, celibate."

In his own words: "I think what I do is noble. I think my job title is entertainer. I shine the light on celebrities behaving badly, and I also shine the light on those that get it right. And those that get it right, I applaud."

Lance Armstrong squeezed his biz back inside his tight little spandex shorts and got back on his bike to raise money for cancer research in Toronto, Canada today.

I had forgotten how well Lance fills out those spandex tighties … it’s been ages since I’ve seen him on top of anything other than Kate Hudson. Remember the summer that the Trifecta comprised of Lance Armstrong, Jake Gyllenhaal and Matthew McConaughey spent so much time in spandex outfits, going for bike rides all over SoCal, raisin’ hell along the way? Ahh … those were some good times. Now, Matthew can’t even be bothered to work-out shirtless anymore, Jake will no longer dream of scratching his butt without Reese Witherspoon’s approval and Lance, well, at least Lance is back in the spandex … and for such a good cause! I can see how it’s totally worth donating $1,500 bucks for cancer research just to ride with Lance Armstrong. Good for him for using his spandex for such a good cause.

Mr Davies who revived Doctor Who for the BBC in addition to creating spin off Torchwood has been honoured for services to drama.

He said: "I'm delighted to accept, and I hope it does the whole industry a bit of good, for the writing of television drama to be recognised." In May he announced that writer Steven Moffat will replace him for the fifth series of Doctor Who, which will air in 2010.

The gay comedian Paul O'Grady is another profile gay celebrities to have been honoured. Mr O'Grady, who first shot to fame as drag queen Lily Savage, now hosts a chat show for Channel 4. He said: "It is a very nice birthday present. I'm really pleased, really surprised. It's something I'd never even thought about." "I'm the last person, I'd have thought, who would be given an MBE.

"What have I done to deserve it? I've just sat there night after night banging out telly. "The thought of getting this would have never even entered my head when I first started out."

Yes. The entire reason for their "romance" is to promote themselves in a certain light to the public. So wether they specifically called the paps or not doesn't matter. They are out together so that they can be seen as a loving couple doing everyday things together so that the public can be convinced that Reese is wonderful and has moved on from her crushing divorce (barf) and Jake is mr. straight man and soccer dad.

  167. 11:12, they don't need to arrange every single photo op, just certain ones at strategic times. For the rest, they put themselves in places and situations where paps are likely to find them. At these "random" encounters, they (oddly enough) always look the way their publicists want: athletic, normal, cuddly.

Don't forget, Reese is good at this game. She kept up the facade of her marriage long after it was over.

If Reeke really wanted privacy, they could have it. How did Ryan and Abbie avoid being papped for most of the past months, even though they're very much together? PR plan to lie low = no pap photos.

  182. It not always guaranteed that a remake of a great film turns out to be great too, but if the director and cast do a good job it happens like Departed.

  183. Maybe the movie will be shown at the Venice or Toronte film festival? I can't wait to see Jake, Tobey and Natalie promoting the movie together.

  184. I hope the movie is good. And I hope that Jake gets nominated for some awards. But, I will not watch any awards ceremony if he bring Reese as his date.

  187. "She's been divorced for 8 months."

Not true, she's officially divorced a few days know. Didn't check the news lately?

  188. Yes, I know, "divorce was finalized" few days ago but they are officially divorced since October, 2007 - legally single since October.

  189. legally single since October.

That's when she was with Jake at the Rome film festival. Unforgettable, because we have picture proof galore.

I hope Jake's performance in Brothers will be noted - with or without awards.
We should wait for at least few reviews before we start planning the award season. lol

  191. Hope that Brothers does well, cause Nailed has all the ear marks of a huge flop-straight to DVD movie. I also think that Reese's movie-Christmas something-sounds like it sucks big time also.

We can never now about Nailed, it might turn out to be a quite entertaining movie.
Reese's Christmas flick doesn't need good reviews, it'll be a family film and people will flock to see it. Most of my friends (females) like those kids of movies.

  193. Good for jake if "brothers" get great reviews.

  194. "Brothers" is getting zero buzz along with the actors. Nada

  195. Maybe buzz will start after the screenings.
